House of Coco’s wellness editor Anji McGrandles uncovers the hidden gems of S’Agaró, Catalonia’s best-kept secret nestled between Barcelona and Girona on the stunning Costa Brava coast

Situated on the Costa Brava coast, sandwiched between Barcelona and Girona is S’Agaró, Catalonia’s best kept secret that promises an unforgettable escape. This exclusive garden village is home to some of Spain’s most sought-after villas.  Built in the 1920’s it hugs the renowned Cami de Ronda coastal trail and boasts breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and golden sands of Sant Pol beach.  At the heart of S’Agaró is the elegant Hostal de La Gavina, the region’s most glamorous, exclusive hotel which I checked into for the weekend.

The region offers an abundance of pristine beaches, Michelin Star restaurants and natural beauty without the crowds.   Its easily accessible, just one hour drive from Barcelona and 30 minutes from Girona and what makes this a fabulous getaway is you can easily explore both vibrant cities while making this tranquil retreat your base, its perfect for those seeking a blend of relaxation, culture, and stunning scenery.

While Barcelona is a popular Spanish city break, I recommend you spend time getting to know glorious Girona.  This stunning, quieter and more compact city packs a punch when it comes to architecture, history, food and drink.

I arrived in Girona at the end of Temps de Flors, Girona’s flower festival that sees the streets come alive with colour each May. The city is a carpet of colourful, delicate flowers with beautiful blooms decorating gates and doorways.

Girona has a new and an old town, divided by the Onyar River. Several small bridges connect the two districts, the most famous is the bright red bridge built by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (who also built the Eiffel Tower in Paris). Grab a coffee and one of the city’s most famous breakfast pastries, Xuixo de Crema (pronounced choo choo), a traditional Catalan pastry, that’s crisp on the outside and stuffed with an irresistible creamy filling.  Sit on one of the cute bridges, enjoy your Xuixo de Crema and take in the charming colourful town houses that are dotted along the river.

There’s so much history in this pretty city and the best way to explore it is a walking tour.  Discover filming locations from Game of Thrones, boutique shops and the city’s striking cathedral.   It’s also a gastronomic destination, and if you want to uncover all the hidden gems while trying some of the tastiest local delicacies then book an evening walking tour with Girona Food Tours.  Enjoy the freshest seafood at L’Arros or indulge in something sweet at Jordi Roca’s Willy Wonka style gelato, Rocambolesc.  Afterwards make a pit stop at Sol Gastrobar in the ‘Wine Square’ for a cold glass or Albariño.   If you are looking for fancy dining there’s 12 Michelin star restaurants in and around the area, the most famous of these is the three-starred El Celler de Can Roca, run by the Roca brothers.

During a visit to S’Agaró it is impossible not to be swept up in the silent glamour and history of Hostal de La Gavina, built in 1932, it still has some of the original features, artwork and furniture.  There are so many stories seeped into the walls of the hotel, guests like Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Jack Nickolson and more recently Lady Gaga have all stayed here.

The hotel beautifully marries an eclectic mix of opulence and hacienda finca.  As soon as you enter the sweeping reception area you are greeted with polished marble floors, high ceilings, rich dark wood furnishings and showstopping floral arrangements.  Each of the 75 rooms and suites are uniquely designed all in line with rest of the hotel’s chic style.

Hostal de La Gavina is also home to four restaurants, Candlelight, which is overseen by Michelin-starred Chef Romain Fornell and spearheaded by Sous Chef Oriol Fernandez, is renowned for its innovative dishes.  Fernandez, a protege of Alain Ducasse, brings his passion and creativity to the table serving exquisite haute cuisine.   Garbi, which offers healthy Mediterranean dishes is perfect for lunch, here you can retreat from the sun and sample a spectacular Paella and a glass of the local wine.   El Barco, is home to a beautiful outdoor terrace and serves an a la carte menu of seasonal tapas.  Just a two-minute walk, perched on the beach is La Taverna del Mar, famed for its locally caught seafood served on the water’s edge.  Expect plump pink langoustines, delicate sea bass in salt and juicy mussels served in a rich marinera sauce.  El Barco bar is a cute snug, where Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra had a showdown after he flew out to Spain amid rumours swirling of her affair with a bull fighter.  It’s great for a late-night tipple or signature cocktail.

For those who love water sports you can head to Sant Pol beach just below the hotel and try out paddleboarding, water skiing and kayaking.  The hotel can also arrange for you to try some local excursions.  I’d recommend booking the boat trip with husband and wife duo Clara and Jaume at La Gastronomica.  This three-hour journey along the Costa Brava coast is a great way to learn more about the region’s food and wine.  Clara, a sommelier has an infectious passion for everything local and along with chef, Jaume they showcase the simplest, freshest ingredients onboard the boat dishing up one of the most delicious brunches I have ever had. Local cheeses, octopus and chickpea stew are served alongside a delicate white Grenache from Empordà.   The boat stops off at a wonderful cove where you can swim, sunbathe, snorkel or paddle surf.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of S’Agaró and to celebrate there are a series of events being held from May 2024 – February 2025.  There will be exhibitions, a regatta, concerts and a firework display amongst other celebrations, so its worth checking out what’s happening if you plan to visit.

S’Agaró is a standout Spanish destination that delivers the perfect blend of natural splendour, cultural richness and laid back charm. So, pack your bags and discover this enchanting corner of the Costa Brava – where the Mediterranean meets a sense of timeless tranquility.

Book Hostal de la Gavina here.  Rates start from €280 (approx. £239) per night for a Classic Room, including breakfast.

The global wellness market is currently estimated to be worth a whopping $6.6 trillion and one of the biggest trends emerging is the rise of wellbeing workspaces.  Soho Farmhouse, The Ned and Soppers House are the new wellness offices where members can find a trendy backdrop to hop on a Zoom, impress a new client with drinks and catch up on emails before hitting the gym to decompress or indulge in a massage after a tense week.

New on the working wellness scene is Champneys.  Renowned as a spa destination, it has launched its new luxury lifestyle membership, Cloud 9, designed to redefine the way you work and your wellbeing.

Wellbeing Workspace

More than just a spa day, Cloud 9 is a passport to work from exceptional surroundings while experiencing indulgence, relaxation, and enhance your overall wellbeing. The Cloud 9 membership gives you access to every Champneys location (Tring, Forest Mere, Henlow Grange, Springs, Eastwell Manor and Mottram Hall), with no pre-booking required.  I spent the day at their Tring outpost to check out this exclusive membership.

Set amongst lush green grounds and gardens you instantly feel calm and relaxed which sets the tone for a productive day.  Inside there’s lots of spaces to pitch up and work.   You can enjoy unlimited access to world-class spa facilities, cafes, and lounge areas across all their locations, allowing you to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  Members can invite up to 24 guests throughout the year so it’s perfect for holding meetings or catching up with clients.

Need a break from your screen? Take a refreshing dip in the pool or unwind with a yoga session in the dedicated wellness area. Trust me, a quick stretch or a few laps can work wonders for boosting creativity and reducing stress.  The fitness facilities here are first class.  Choose from over 20 classes a day or hit the fully equipped ground floor gym for a workout.  There’s a newly refurbed ‘Uban Gym’ great for a free weight session and a stretch.  There are dedicated Reformer Pilates and spin studios. If you need a bit of fitness inspo book as PT with one of the fitness team.  I spent one hour with lead PT Tom, who is full of tips and tweaks to get the most out of your training.

Say goodbye to sad desk lunches and hello to tasty meals crafted with your health in mind. Whether you’re craving a nutrient-packed salad or a delicious smoothie to fuel your day, Cloud 9 Champneys has got you covered. Plus, their on-site cafe serves up a variety of snacks and beverages to keep you energised throughout the day.

The spa is a serene space, ideal for unwinding after a long day.  There’s an extensive treatment menu that includes everything from facials to body wraps – all using Champneys products.  I had a signature massage and floated out the door.  If you need to squeeze in a blow out for the weekend you can book into their on-site hair salon and leave feeling a million dollars.  Members receive four complimentary treatments each year, curated to individual preferences.

But perhaps the best part of working at Cloud 9 Champneys is the sense of community you’ll find here. Gone are the days of feeling isolated behind a computer screen. At Cloud 9 Champneys, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for wellness and productivity. As a member you get exclusive access to wellness events.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, all of this sounds amazing, but is it affordable? Cloud 9 Champneys offers flexible membership options to suit your needs and budget.

I loved working out of Champneys, while I made full use of the facilities I also got lots of work done and met some interesting people.  I left feeling energised and I think that came from being in a new work environment.   It’s easy to see why wellbeing workspaces are on the rise, they are the perfect antidote to busy work days.    So grab your laptop, pack your yoga mat, and get ready to take your productivity to new heights in the most zen workspace around!

Gili Lankanfushi

One of the standout features of Gili is its world-class spa and wellness facilities.  Tucked away on a secluded bay and perched across the ocean is Meera Spa, a tranquil haven designed to bring the outdoors in with glass-panelled floors, endless views of turquoise waters and open-air walkways.  Here you can experience a customised wellness programme that incorporates a range of global therapies, drawing on age-old cultures and knowledge.

To celebrate the launch of their new spa and wellness menu, House of Coco caught up with spa manager, Ni Wayan Eka Rianti to find out more.

Rianti tells me that unlike other spas, Meera is focussed on creating a bespoke wellness experience that is tailormade to suit guests’ needs.  “In addition to our diverse range of treatments, spanning relaxation, Ayurveda, body and face care, journeys and therapeutic treatments, our skilled therapists curate personalised experiences modified to each individual’s needs.”    There are immersive one-to-five-day wellness journeys, that include a range of curated restorative experiences with long-lasting benefits. Journeys range from a lavish five-day detox retreat, aimed to purify body and mind with a host of treatments and healing experiences, to a one-day Ayurvedic remedy journey, which revives weary travellers through therapeutic massage. New active programmes combine surfing or scuba diving with tailored spa treatments to allow guests to reach their full potential whether under the sea or riding the waves.  Rianti concludes, “Our team goes beyond traditional therapy, they become your wellness buddy treating you with genuine smiles, love and care.”

Away from the classic massage, the spa team has designed a collection of distinctive treatments.  Rianti explains, “Our Deep Muscle Fusion is a massage created for athletic, sporty guests who require complex techniques including stretching, myofascial release and trigger points to address stiffness and detox lactic acid.”  In addition to this, launching in April is a Pairing Journey.  “This is a synergy of Eastern and Western traditions that enhances the overall benefit of the treatment. This approach is adapted from the Five Elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Wind). For example, Earth Journey will help the guest feel grounded and calm with Shirodara and foot reflexology massage.” She says.

For anyone feeling jetlagged or struggling to sleep the spa team are on hand to help.  Their Mindful Sleep Journey is designed to enhance the quality of sleep incorporating breathing exercises, sound healing, relaxing massage and aromatherapy.

Throughout the year, visiting practitioners specialising in healing and wellbeing take residency at Gili hosting curated programmes.  Rianti explains, “Previous practitioners have included energy healers, reiki specialists, Watsu therapists, acupuncturists, and crystal sound healers. Our ever-changing roster of visiting practitioners represents Gili’s commitment to offering world-class service and amenities amid the tropical splendour of our island.”

The eco-conscious ethos of Gili Lankanfushi extends to the spa, Rianti tells me that sustainability is at the heart of their operations.  “We have aligned with VOYA, Sodashi and Ocean R, a product line committed to sustainability and eco-friendly practices. Furthermore, we foster partnership with several local brands to contribute and support the local business community.”  She concludes, “Some ingredients used in our treatments are sourced internally from the resort’s organic garden.”

What sets Meera apart from other resort spas is not only the amazing treatments but the way the natural beauty and surroundings are showcased.  “Each of the treatment rooms has strategically placed glass panels, positioned directly below massage beds so guests can enjoy the beauty of the ocean while experiencing a relaxing touch at the same time,” says Rianti.   The Ayurveda champa is an outdoor treatment room covered by lush green bushes by the beach.  Here guests can indulge in a treatment with natural sounds of birds, wind and the sea.   Rianti tells me that one of the guest’s favourite spots is the relaxation area.  “You can relish in unobstructed views, watching the waves breaking on the reef while sipping our signature ginger tea post treatment.”

Gili Lankafushi is a luxe oasis for discerning travellers looking for a relaxing, rejuvenating retreat.

Nightly rates at Gili Lankanfushi start from £1,397/$1,722 based on two adults sharing a Villa Suite with breakfast included. For more information or to book please visit Gili Lankanfushi

The ‘skinification’ of hair care is going to be one of the biggest wellness trends in 2024. Scalp health is having a moment and as a result scalp clinics are popping up to meet the demand.  Just like facials, scalp treatments need to be carried out by knowledgeable professionals, using efficacious products and techniques. Unlike some trends, this one is here to stay as a healthy scalp is instrumental in hair growth and condition.  House of Coco caught up with Anabel Kingsley, Consultant Trichologist, and Brand President of the Philip Kingsley Clinics to find why we should be getting onboard when it comes to scalp health.

Why is it important to treat the scalp as diligently as we do our skin?

Your scalp is skin – it’s simply an extension of the skin on your forehead. As such, it’s exposed to similar environmental aggressors as the skin on your face, and also sweats, produces oils and sheds skin cells, so it should be given similar care. In terms of hair growth, your scalp is your hair’s support system and is the bedrock of your hair follicles. A flaky scalp can increase daily hair fall and can also weaken hairs as they emerge from their follicle.

How does a scalp consultation differ from a traditional visit to the hairdressers?

Trichology and hairdressing are two different specialisms. Trichologists are scientists of the hair and scalp and we are trained to recognise and treat various disorders and problems that can impact the hair and scalp. A hairdresser has expertise in styling, cutting, colouring and chemical processing.

What are the biggest scalp issues you are seeing in clinic?

The most common scalp condition is dandruff, followed by seborrhoeic dermatitis (an oilier, inflamed version of dandruff) and then psoriasis. Dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis usually occur when you have an overgrowth of certain yeasts, called the Malassezia yeasts, on your scalp – this causes skin cells to turnover too rapidly leading to tell-tale, loose and often greasy flakes. Malassezia yeasts thrive in an oily environment, so having an oily scalp can cause and exacerbate dandruff and seb derm. In fact, dandruff is sometimes solely caused by not cleansing your scalp often enough and/or not shampooing correctly. Psoriasis is completely different – it’s an auto-immune skin condition which causes skin cells to divide much too fast (within days rather than weeks) and results in thick, tight, white plaques with bleeding points underneath. Psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis can also occur together.

We treat each of these conditions on a daily basis at our clinics in London and New York. We use bespoke scalp masks, shampoo and toner (which vary depending on the condition), as well as massage, steam and red light to help clear scalp conditions. We also look into dietary and lifestyle factors that may be aggravating the scalp.

What benefits can individuals expect from incorporating scalp treatments into their skincare routines?

If you have a scalp condition, clearing it will make you much more comfortable physically, but it will also benefit your self-esteem and how your hair looks and behaves. Longer term, caring for your scalp will help with hair growth. We take a very holistic approach to scalp health, looking into general health, diet and lifestyle factors.

What are the innovative techniques or technologies your clinic uses to improve scalp health?

What is currently seen as innovative and ‘trendy’ is old news to us! We’ve been shouting about scalp health and treating scalp like skin for decades – my father, Philip Kingsley, was the first person to link scalp health to hair growth and came out with his first scalp mask, tonic and shampoo in the 1940s. In terms of what we are doing differently from what we used to do, our formulas have changed and been updated. However, we don’t jump on new fads or technologies for the sake of it – we only adopt new methods if there is real clinical data, studies and evidence that proves it can benefit. We use ingredients and techniques that we know work.

What are the top misconceptions about scalp health that you often encounter?

Shampooing frequency. Many people believe that shampooing daily will increase the scalp’s oil production. This simply isn’t true. Just like washing your face every day doesn’t make it greasier, washing your scalp won’t make it oilier.

Massage brushes. I don’t recommend these. They can be abrasive and damage both the scalp and hair. Your fingertips are your best tool when it comes to massage.

Rubbing oils into the scalp. As most scalp conditions are due to have an excess of oil, rubbing oils into your scalp is likely to make the flakes worse.

Does health and lifestyle factors impact scalp health?

Stress can worsen existing scalp conditions and trigger new ones. Stress causes inflammation and it can also increase your scalp’s oil production, disrupting its delicate balance of microbes. Eating certain foods, like too many full fat dairy products, can also aggravate the scalp. Hormonal fluctuations, like menstruation, pregnancy and menopause can also impact the condition of the scalp.

What advice would you give to individuals looking to maintain optimal scalp health between clinic visits?

Like your skin, you should cleanse your scalp frequently. Try to shampoo daily if you have fine hair or a scalp condition. However, if your hair is very coiled or long, try not to leave more than three days between shampoos as it will negatively impact the condition of your scalp. You should also use a daily toner to combat flakes or itchiness and mask weekly to exfoliate dead skin cells. Everyone, even if you don’t have a problem with your scalp, should use an overnight scalp serum to help keep it in optimal condition – just like you use products to help keep your face healthy, even if you don’t have problematic skin.

I love the gym, I go at least four to five times a week but just recently I found I was bored of my routine and not seeing the results I was expecting.   I decided to shake things up and swap my gym visits for Reformer Pilates classes three times a week. And let me tell you, it was a game-changer.

I booked into Chilli Pilates for a four-week course of classes.  Based in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire their contemporary studios offer dynamic reformer classes with their team of skilled, knowledgeable and friendly instructors.

If you’ve never tried reformer Pilates, let me give you the low-down. Picture a long, sleek contraption with a sliding carriage, springs, and various straps and handles – that’s the reformer bed. It might look a bit intimidating at first, but trust me, its easy to use and at Chilli studios the instructors take the time to show you how to set up the bed for each exercise.

I’ll admit, I was sceptical at first, I like to leave the gym feeling like I’ve been put through my paces so was expecting some stretching and breathing.   Boy, was I wrong.  Reformer Pilates isn’t just about stretching, it’s a full-body workout that strengthens your core, improves flexibility, and enhances your overall muscle tone. Unlike traditional mat Pilates, which relies solely on body weight for resistance, the Reformer adds an extra challenge by incorporating spring resistance. This means you can adjust the intensity of your workout by simply swapping your spring, making it suitable for everyone from beginners to seasoned athletes.  Plus, it’s low-impact, which means it’s gentle on your joints.

After my first class I felt like I had done a full body workout.  Reformer Pilates may look easy, but don’t be fooled, it’s anything but. Each class was a challenging mix of strength training, cardio, and flexibility exercises, all rolled into one. From ‘the hundred’ to ‘the elephant’ to ‘the plank,’ every move engaged muscles I never even knew I had.   After two weeks I was able to adjust the springs and challenge myself.   To mix things up a little, I booked into Chilli Pilates 1-2-1 cardio class.  My instructor, Beth created a bespoke workout for me that combined the reformer and cardio based exercises.  Again, it left me feeling like I had physically pushed myself.

I found that the classes gave me a sense of calm.  Unlike the hustle and bustle of the gym, from the moment I stepped into the studio I felt relaxed.  Low level music and lighting set the tone, and I spent the whole 50 minutes focussing on each movement, checking my form and listening to the instructor.  It’s a fantastic way to switch off and be present.

After just a few weeks of reformer Pilates sessions, I noticed a significant improvement in my strength, flexibility, and overall muscle tone. My posture had never been better, my clothes fit more comfortably, and I had more energy and stamina than ever before. Plus, the low-impact nature of reformer Pilates means I could push myself without worrying about sustaining an injury.

One of the biggest changes I noticed was improved core strength and definition. Because the carriage is unstable, your core muscles have to work overtime to stabilise your body and maintain form. This not only strengthens your core but also improves your balance and stability, essential for preventing injuries both in and out of the gym.

But perhaps the best thing about reformer Pilates is the diverse classes. Unlike mindlessly running on a treadmill or lifting weights in a crowded gym, reformer Pilates keeps things interesting with a constant variety of exercises and movements. Plus, the small class sizes mean you’ll get plenty of personalised attention from your instructor, ensuring your posture is correct and you get the most out of your workout.

It has been designed to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings, with spacious villas scattered along the pristine beaches and perched over the azure waters of the Indian Ocean.

Those with a sweet tooth will love the Ice and Chocolate studio.  Take a trip post lunch, to the complimentary al fresco ice cream and sorbet parlour that serves a whopping 48 unique flavours.  They’re all homemade using natural ingredients and are the ultimate treat to help you stay cool.
