Klō Organic Beauty is a 100% natural skin care company hand crafted in small batches in Western MA. The company is co-owned by sisters, Nicole Anagnos and Megan Berube. Their products are organic, nontoxic, vegan, and certified cruelty-free.

We went behind the brand to find out more…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
We launched in February of 2016. We had been searching for the right skin care products for our skin types and had a difficult time finding an effective product that was also nontoxic and organic. We began learning about skin care and oil cleansing and started making our own. A short time later we realised we had a really great product and decided to share it!

What is your background?
Megan was an advertising account executive and Nicole is a health coach in private practice. Both sisters attended The Institute for Integrative Nutrition and have a deep interest in health and wellness.

How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
The company is owned and operated by sisters, Megan and Nicole. They consider their husbands and children to be mandatory volunteer employees.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
We would have probably launched earlier!

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
We decided when we started that we would try and do everything ourselves from manufacturing to web design. It’s challenging to get it all done!

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
A little while back we had a well situation that left my family with no clean water for months. After repeated failed attempts to fix it, we eventually had to dig a new well. We “got by” with jugs of water filled up at friends houses, showers at the gym, and brushing our teeth with water bottles. It was tough. Really draining and tough. It happened right around when we were building Klō and conceptualising ideas. It hit me hard that some people live like this all the time. No clean water. No friends with clean water. At that moment Megan and I decided we wanted to give back with every purchase. We found water.org and it was a match made in heaven. Now every purchase someone makes on our website, donates 6 months of safe water to a person in need.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
Appearing in Vogue and Glamour and other magazines that we’ve read for years has been a huge highlight. It feels very validating after all of our hard work!

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
Honestly we feel most at home in the country! If we see a cow on the side of the road we are happy.

Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
We would say lip balm, our homemade deodorant, and of course, our Klō duo.

Style means….?
Feeling comfortable in your clothes. Not feeling like you have to jump on every trend, but instead really embracing what you love.

Statement shoe or statement bag?
We both love a good bag.

If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?
Megan would gladly wear a hoodie every day and Nicole has made it her mission to learn the art of dressing up yoga pants so she can wear them every day.

Best place for a coffee?
Homemade on the front porch on a beautiful summer day.

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Don’t ever listen to that voice that tries to creep into your head telling you there are already too many skin care companies out there.

Guilty pleasure?
Reality TV

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
We may expand our company with more products in the future, but we strongly believe in the simplicity of our two product system.

Klō Organic Beauty is an all-natural skin care company developed and hand crafted in small batches in The Beautiful Berkshires in Western, MA. The company is co-owned by sisters, Nicole Anagnos and Megan Berube. Their products are organic, non-toxic, vegan, and certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny. They feature an anti-aging line using the highest quality oils. Their products were nominated for Best in Show at the Indie Beauty Expo in New York City and have been featured in Vogue + Glamour magazine. More information can be found on their website, klobeauty.com

At Viva Voce they believe true beauty is about vitality and loving the skin you are in. They want to help you look and feel your best self and be your best age. Their promise to you is a bit of luxury and innovative high performance skin care to challenge your traditional routines. They want to help you show your irrepressible, vibrant best self.

A brand after our own heart, we just had to find out more…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
Like many brands, Viva Voce grew out my search for a solution to my own problem. My skin was severely prematurely aged. The result of cumulative sun damage. We love to be active and have always lived near the beach and I adore it. In my late 30s, when I had a young family, I had treatment for breast cancer. The stress and fear around that exacerbated my skin issues dramatically- wrinkles, sagging, pigmentation, dryness, redness.

The products I was offered at the time didnt help, and I wouldn’t/couldnt accept that. It was important to me that I looked healthy and well. I am quite tenacious, so I looked into sourcing cosmetic ingredients for myself, and then I got involved in cosmetic formulation science – and I found my products were actually really effective for me and for other women.I have always had an interest in science, but am equally interested in the beauty and the aesthetic of things, so creating my products has allowed me to blend my interests beautifully. Creating a brand out of these products was really a personal challenge, to see if my products could help other women create healthy skin and regain their confidence in how they look and feel.

Whats your background?
I studied business at uni, then did an about turn and became a clinical nurse. I did that for 20+ years in a variety of clinical settings so I actually know a lot about the human body, which gives me a bit of an advantage creating Viva Voce. I’ve always been intrigued by the business world but this is my first substantial role in it – it’s like coming full circle. I’m learning so much and loving growing Viva Voce as a company to get these products out to the world.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
Have a more structured business plan and outsource the things I don’t enjoy, like marketing. Starting out, we were excited to have this amazing product that feels beautiful and looks beautiful and we just wanted to run with it, which in retrospect was kind of naive. Viva Voce is a Latin phrase that translates to ‘the living voice’. We know our product is great and we believed that word would quickly spread and people would be queuing to buy it. Marketing is actually way more complicated than that. Products don’t sell just because they are great. On one hand it has been fun learning about the different facets of marketing, but it has also been immensely time consuming and at times challenging.

But really it has been an adventure, just seeing where it goes. So actually, I don’t think I would change anything.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
Finding time for everything, and making sure we keep our life balanced. We live in a really beautiful part of the world on the beaches in sub-tropical Queensland, Australia, and getting outdoors keeps me happy. We started this business as a bit of an adventure, so it has to stay fun.

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
I desperately wanted to hang glide. I’m not great with heights so this would be a great surprise to those that know me well. My only solo attempt ended with me crashing onto a bitumen car park, luckily not from a great height. So funny!

2017 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
Our main goal at the moment is to increase brand awareness. We are a boutique family run company, and we plan to remain so. Being independent allows us great agility, so we want to continue our small batch manufacturing in Australia. We have a clean green focus here, an excellent international reputation for safety and very talented formulators, so it makes sense.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
Outstanding feedback about our products, particularly our Intense Hydration Serum. Every single time someone takes the time to tell us they love it, I get such a buzz. It’s like my third child. Being featured in an international magazine is pretty special too.

Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?

  1. Absolutely our Intense Hydration Serum. I use it alone and/or layer it with other things. If I am heading out for some excericise early, it plumps and smoothes and is semi-permeable so my skin can still breathe. It is a great multi-tasker.
  2. High SPF tinted sunscreen.
  3. Mascara

Style means….?
Being confident. Knowing what suits you and allowing your own personality to show. It gets easier as you get older. For me it includes relaxed, simple, elegant items. Like a slip dress, or great jeans, and a flowy strappy top. I loveblue, especially indigo, and I am a big fan of Brisbane (Australian) based designer Cassandra Harper. Clothes have to be easy to wear and fit with my lifestyle. My style icons? – I have two gorgeous daughters and I love watching both of them develop their own unique natural style.

Best thing about London to you?
Resilience.

Statement shoe or statement bag?
Shoe

If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?
Probably jeans, my favourite pair at the moment are Calvin Klein skinny straights.

Favourite love song?
Sail Away by David Gray. The lyrics are kind of sad but the song feels super romantic to me.

Best place for a coffee?

Season, Noosa Main Beach – the view is the best.

View from Season Noosa – Elle

Guilty pleasure?
Champagne. No doubt!

If you could spent 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?

In an apartment in Queenstown, New Zealand, with a view of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables. It is truly stunning! I cant get there enough

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?

We have a few more products in development and we would love to grow our international sales. We are looking at distribution in the US at the moment. But it has to work with our boutique model. We shall see what happens!

The House Of Coco Team is really into pretty white smiles. Having impeccable pearly white teeth is something that we all want in our lives and sometimes just brushing doesn’t quite do the job. The Coco Team has found a few great ways for everyone to brighten up their smile in a natural and safe way.

Food is one of our favorite things, but did you know that there are some foods out there that can help you whiten your teeth. First up we have banana peels. Banana peels from ripe pretty bananas will help you get that pretty white smile. Ripe bananas contain lots of potassium and magnesium, which is perfect for whitening teeth. Simply rub a piece of the banana peel over your teeth for two minutes. This will allow your teeth to absorb the minerals found in the teeth which will promote whitening.

Next up, we have some of everyone’s favorite fruit. STRAWBERRIES!! Strawberry’s are not only good to eat, but they’re a tooth whitening agent as well. Strawberries are good for your teeth too, all you have to do is simply mash some strawberries up into a paste and rub it on your teeth. Rinse your mouth out afterward and enjoy those pearly whites.

Last but definitely not least, a product that has been seen all over social media for the past two years and one of the Team Coco favorites. Activated Charcoal has arrived on the scene and has been working wonders for all of its users. This isn’t food but it’s a good trick for whitening your teeth. Activated charcoal can absorb plaque and anything else that will stain your teeth. Simply brush your teeth with the charcoal, then rinse and spit. Continuing to brush your teeth with it on a regular basis will eventually help better your teeth giving you that flawless white smile that you’ve been looking for.

Sönd is a new anti-ageing skincare range specifically for sensitive and dermatitis-prone skin. House of Coco’s Beauty Writer Rachel McAlley is currently testing and trialing three of the products from this new collection in the UK.

Harnessing the incredible natural power of silica, Sönd is a four-fold breakthrough skincare system that boosts collagen production and strengthens skin’s elasticity, firming the skin, while also treating the common, and often debilitating concerns of eczema and psoriasis.

Founded in 2015, Sönd debuts in the UK market this winter after three years in development with a team of German scientists and backed by independent research*.

The active substance silica, which we already have in our bodies when we are born, plays an essential therapeutic role in maintaining our overall health. From a beauty perspective, silica makes the skin ‘glow’. Collagen consists largely of silica as we age, the supply of silica in our bodies is exhausted and in turn, reduces collagen production.

Sönd uses a dual approach to ensure that the delivery of silica, in its pure mineral form, is as effective as possible. Due to its ability to form stable bonds with oxygen, silica creates bonds between protein molecules, which are responsible for the skin’s natural ability to retain water, critical for skin repair and skin renewal.

Silica boosts hydration in the skin, is a natural anti-inflammatory and increases the elasticity of blood vessels; improving the delivery of oxygen and essential nutrients to the skin’s cells.

The three Sönd products we are trialing at House of Coco include;

Sönd Energising Mineral Supplements, Energise + Activate. Priced at £28 for 60 capsules (taken daily; one capsule twice a day).

The mineral supplements are formulated with high-strength mineral silica, magnesium, vitamin E and calcium. The result replenishes your skin with essential collagen-forming silica to improve the health, function and appearance of your skin from within.

Sönd Hydrating Face Spray, Hydrate + Refresh. Priced at £24 for 100ml.

The hydrating spray provides instant and long-lasting hydration, the face spray is a lightweight and refreshing moisture boost that’s gentle and soothing on sensitive or irritated skin. An aqua-based infusion of high-strength silica that’s quick to apply, it’s a simple everyday essential for healthier skin on the go.

Sönd Gentle Daily Cleanser, Cleanse + Calm. Priced at £22 for 100ml.

The daily cleanser is there to cleanse and calm the skin through its gentle but effective cleansing cream. Shea and Cocoa butter lifts off impurities without stripping away your skin’s essential moisture, while extracts of chamomile and marigold will soothe and calm your skin for a healthy glow.

The benefits of using Sond Cleanse + Calm are immense, with chamomile and marigold added to soothe irritated skin, it is suitable for sensitive skin and leaves the skin feeling cleansed but not tight or dry. The cleanser dissolves makeup and lifts off grime plus it is paraben free and artificial fragrance free.

Our House of Coco team loves a new skincare trend. Whether it’s chemical peels, microdermabrasion or the hottest new serums – we’re all over it. When our resident lifestyle writer Jenna was invited to try out Skin Laundry newest Laser and Light facial, which promises a fresh glow in 15 minutes, she couldn’t get her hungover ass there quick enough…

“Usually, the idea of having a laser shot at my face wouldn’t be my idea of heaven. However, when this was paired with a facial and a trip to Harvey Nichols, I was sold. Laser & Light facials are relatively new to the UK beauty scene, but in the US this has been a big deal for quite some time. Skin Laundry was one of the first companies to bring this treatment to the UK with the entire procedure taking less than 15 minutes. Perfect for a lunch hour freshen-up, it’s not the type of treatment to leave you relaxed and chilled out – but it will leave you looking like you’ve just had 12 hours sleep. Founded by Yen Reis, who created the concept after a tiresome battle with adult acne – not only is the treatment quick, it requires no downtime at all.

Skin Laundry Treatment: A Deep Dive into Laser Skincare

Now you’re thinking what I was thinking – how the hell does having a laser shot directly onto your face for 15 minutes clean your skin? Well, it’s science really. The laser enables this treatment to be one of the most intense deep cleanses on the market by penetrating around 2mm below the skin surface, meaning all dirt and excess oils are extracted. Sounds crazy right? Speaking to my therapist, told me how the combination of laser and IPL is like turning on a light switch for your skin. It wakes everything up and stimulates the cells to give a more dewy glow to the skin. We all love that glow.

I will say that the smell during the procedure is a mix between a log burner and charcoal, but don’t let that put you off! My therapist told me to not worry that my skin was burning (as it wasn’t) it was merely the dirt and excess oil coming out of the skin. Although it smells like your skin is far too close to a bonfire, it doesn’t feel like it. I’d liken it to tiny electric shocks and it’s over within minutes – and trust me, I’m a total wimp when it comes to any sort of pain! As my skin is quite oily anyway, it’s no surprise that my skin felt incredibly clean after the first round of lasers. Like, squeaky clean.

Experience the Gentle Power of IPL in Skin Laundry’s Skincare Treatment

Moving onto the IPL, it wasn’t going to strip my eyebrows off as some may have lead me to believe. Skin Laundry uses IPL at an incredibly low level, therefore rather than hair removal – It is used for the surface of your skin to address any discolouration issues and to brighten everything up. Even with goggles on and my eyes closed, I still saw bright red lights – which although not dangerous at all, was definitely strange. But to manage to penetrate the surface of your skin it’s going to be a lot brighter than a standard bulb.

The treatment ended with a tone and moisturise from their Wash and Wear range. The range is small but perfectly formed with Reis wanting to keep the range simple and free from any faff. It does exactly what it says on the tin and works hand in hand with the treatment to prolong the effects. First, the toner is used to calm & detoxify then the moisturiser (with spf35 may I add!) adds a glowy radiance to your newly primed face! Like any laser treatment, I was advised to stay off the sunbeds and away from any chemical peels/exfoliants for at least 48 hours to give the skin time to recuperate. However, unlike a lot of facial treatments I’ve had, I could re-apply my makeup straight away if I so wished. However, as my mascara and brows had been left intact and my skin was glowing and soft – I shied away from any base.

Skin Laundry Review: My Experience and Verdict

Now, did the treatment improve my skin? Skin Laundry is pretty confident when it comes to the Laser & Light facial as they offer every customer their first treatment free, so I didn’t want to be one of the first guys to say it wasn’t worth it. Unlucky for me, two days later I broke out in some pretty annoying spots around my t-zone. However, that was probably down to my all-night party in the Casino I attended the night I had it done, rather than the facial itself! Two days later, they had cleared and my skin still felt incredibly soft and had that dewy look. Two weeks later, I do believe the surface of my skin has improved. It looks less dull and after using some of their products (especially the SPF35 moisturiser – which I LOVE) it’s given me a jump start for taking my skincare a little more seriously. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. Can I afford the recommended 1-3 times a week (£60-£170)? Not quite yet. However, I’ll be booking in again for a pre-holiday glow-up!

Cosmetics were taken to another level for the House of Coco team at the launch of Fenty Beauty by Rihanna.

Harvey Nichols, the UK’s exclusive stockist of Fenty Beauty opened the doors to the general public on Friday morning to a frenzy of excitement from all corners of the world. Rihanna was releasing her first ever collection of beauty products and the anticipation was immense.

With over 90 products in the Fenty Beauty range there is literally something for every skin tone.

Before she was BadGalRiRi: music, fashion and beauty icon, Robyn Rihanna Fenty was a little girl in Barbados transfixed by her mother’s lipstick. The first time she experienced makeup for herself, she never looked back. Makeup became her weapon of choice for self-expression—a way to radiate her ever-changing mood—and it powered a fearless take on beauty that helped her become the boundary-breaking icon she is today.

Rihanna was inspired to create Fenty Beauty after years of experimenting with the best-of-the-best in beau- ty—and still seeing a void in the industry for products that performed across all skin types and tones. She launched a makeup line “so that women everywhere would be included,” focusing on a wide range of tradition- ally hard-to-match skin tones, creating formulas that work for all skin types, and pinpointing universal shades.

Fenty Beauty products are designed to feel lightweight, even as they deliver buildable coverage that effortlessly layers, to ultimately “make skin look like skin.” Most importantly, Rihanna creates makeup to inspire “Makeup is there for you to have fun with,” she says. “It should never feel like pressure. It should never feel like a uniform. Feel free to take chances, and take risks, and dare to do something new or different.”

Let’s talk about the products. Created by Rihanna with her vision that’s always ahead of the game, Fenty Beauty redefines the rules with light-as-air formulas that love to be layered—in a global lineup of shades designed for all. Fenty Beauty is 100% cruelty free.

So much choice from the brand including Pro Filt’r Foundations, Match Stix, Killawatt Highlighters, Blotting products, Accessories and plenty more.

Match Stix, £21

Killawatt Highlighter, £26

Invisimatte Blotting, £24

Available exclusively at Harvey Nichols across the UK.

The end of the summer is nigh! So, let’s splash out and treat ourselves to something wonderful from the world of beauty. No matter what the weather, here at House of Coco we always see glorious sunshine, especially when we’re investing in new hair products, skincare or cosmetics. Bring on the beauty counters; we’re coming to get ya!

Our first must-have pick me up is by Khadi, an Ayurvedic Face and Body Oil. The face and body oils are packed with aromatherapy oils and are an excellent skincare alternative to lotions and creams. They are absorbed quickly and transport nurturing ingredients directly into the skin providing intense skin care and protections without feeling oily. Our stand out favourite from the 8 oils in the collection is Viola, which contains Violet, Vanilla, Liquorice, Vitamin E, Wheatgerm Oil and Almond.

Khadi Ayurvedic Face & Body Oil is suitable for normal skin, is available online from Pravera and is priced at £11.90 for 100ml.

Pick me up number two is by Clarol, a new way of treating acne, and the Clarol Sebopure works by targeting sebum (oily skin). Sebopure contains a natural plant active derived from Wild Mustard Leaf Oil called Pixalia™, this works on the skin by decreasing the amount of serum produced while at the same time keeping sebum pure and clean. It does this by neutralising the oxidisation process and preventing bacterial build-up. Sebopure also increases the skin’s natural moisturising deposits called glycerides, aiding the skin’s elasticity and smoothness while protecting from breakouts.

Clarol Sebopure is suitable for oily or combination skin, is available online from Clarol and is priced at £12.95 for 50ml.

iz Beauty of London and the collection of berry nail colours are our third beauty pick me up here at House of Coco Magazine. As talk is of the weather and we are moving between summer and autumn we need a pick me up that helps us seamlessly stroll between the seasons, iz Beauty of London achieves this perfectly. We adore the three berry shades including the rich burgundy of Front Row, raspberry-hued Upper East Side, and the cherry-stained Made in Manhattan.

Iz Beauty of London berry shades Front Row, Upper East Side and Made in Manhattan are available online from iz Beauty of London and are priced at £6 each for 6ml.

Staying with a hand and nail focus for our next pick me up, Merci Handy’s dainty Hand Cleansing Gel’s are now available from Selfridges Travel Beauty Destination within their London store. Merci handy will have you saying goodbye to any unwanted bacteria and hello to hydrated, soft and nourished hands. With three brand new scents recently launched including Flower Power, Coco Rico and of course our favourite at House of Coco, Hello Sunshine.

Hair pick me ups include the Nanogen Root Boost Hair Thickening Spray, which features a ‘blow dry in a bottle’ blend of ingredients that lift and volumise the hair with a light-weight, non-greasy formula that actively fattens the hair shaft for a visible improvement in hair thickness. Excellent detangling properties and protection against breakage make this multi-tasking product a hair styling staple. This iconic thickening spray boasts Keratin, Niacinamide, Green Tea Extract, Caffeine, and Vitamin B5 all working together to naturally thicken, exfoliate dead skin cells, anti-oxidise, stimulate hair follicles, and improve luster and frizz. With the added Mineral Rich Natural Sea Salt and Lifting Polymers giving effective lift, texture and unparalleled volume in the hair.

Sometimes you meet someone who inspires you to get off your bottom and do more with yourself, House of Coco beauty writer Rachel McAlley recently felt this way after meeting businesswoman and all round advocate for fabulous brows, Shavata Singh.

Shavata is the leading authority on beautiful eyebrows, she runs her own mini empire Shavata Brow Studio, with 20 stores and concessions in the UK where she has hundreds of clients including well-known faces such as Victoria Beckham and Adele, amongst many others.

Rachel met Shavata while having her eyebrows and eyelashes assessed at Shavata Brow Studio within Harvey Nichols in Leeds. Shavata is surrounded by great energy and has an immense passion to help clients get the best look for their unique face shape. Shavata helped Rachel realise her own eyebrow potential by re-defining, darkening and re-shaping her tired brows, and to top off the meeting Shavata suggested Rachel have an eyelash lift. What more could a girl ask for!

Here are a few questions Shavata kindly answered, a House of Coco #GirlBoss favourite.

• How old were you when you started your business?
32

• How many salons and studios do you currently have in the UK?
2 Flagships and 18 Concessions

• Do you work from your flagship salon in Knightsbridge? Is this where a client that wants to book you personally would need to visit?
I work every Wednesday and Thursday in Knightsbridge and in Chiswick once a month on the first Friday.

• What was the first technique or treatment you learned about eyebrows and do you still use it today?
Threading and yes I still use it today!

• Do you have a personal favourite treatment to have on your own brows?
I love a good brow shape and tint

• What is your least favourite treatment to have on your own brows? Do you still have the treatment, even though it’s your least favourite?
I don’t have a least favourite

• I understand that you have some A-list celebrity clients that you have helped with their eyebrow requirements, including; Adele, Victoria Beckham, Elle Macpherson and Kate Hudson plus many more. Did any of these beautiful ladies have difficult brows to work with, and if so, how do you tackle telling a super star that they have unruly brows?
I am honest with all my clients, even if they’re celebrities. I may tell them to grow the brows out or recommend which products to use.

• I’m sure you’ve worked on some male eyebrows too, are they harder, easier or just the same to work with as the female brow?
We treat all our clients the same and have a thorough consultation so it is important to ask if they want a natural or defined eyebrow look.

• Who would be your dream client?
Princess Diana

• Do you ever walk down the street and notice someone’s eyebrow that you desperately want to guide in the right direction? And, have you ever been known to stop someone in the street to offer your services to an untamed brow?
I do this all the time! But I have never stopped someone in the street.

• You now have a number of eyebrow tools and cosmetic products in your name, what made you venture into retail?
I wanted to have a range of products that we could use on clients but also to use at home in between appointments to maintain those brows.

• Which brow products from the Shavata collection would you suggest to buy if someone was only just getting into brow shaping, tinting and defining?
I would recommend our Defining Pencil as it creates natural looking brows in seconds. The precision slim-line tip gives a professional application that is effortless to achieve. The automatic mechanism means no more searching for that always-difficult-to-find sharpener! Long lasting and smudge-proof this wonder product is formulated with Vitamin E to gently condition brows.

• Which one of your products do you use every day on your own brows?
The Defining Pencil, I love it!

A huge ‘thank you’ must go to Shavata Singh for spending time with House of Coco beauty writer Rachel McAlley to teach her about brows and all the do’s and don’ts of plucking, shaping and defining. Also it’s with thanks to Harvey Nichols Leeds for the invite to meet Shavata.
