When you are planning on lighting for your outdoor spaces, there are a lot of things that you need to think about. Normally, you will prioritize things like how the lighting appears and how energy efficient it is, and for this, the obvious choice is to use modern LED lighting. LED lighting is low maintenance, cheaper to run and better for the environment. It can also be used to create everything from bright floodlighting to stylish colored lighting effects in outdoor fittings. However, one important aspect of outdoor lighting design that may not be so obvious during your planning stage is how your new lights will affect your neighbours.

Light trespass is a real thing and can even enable your neighbors to make formal complaints and force you to take down or stop using your lighting. Even if they do not complain, it isn’t great to think that the things you have done to make your home look better or feel more secure are having a negative impact on the people around you. It really is a good idea to understand about what light trespass is and how to avoid it before you put in place designs for a new lighting installation on the outside of your home. Unless you live far from other homes, you should make this a priority. If you have already committed a violation, then to avoid further problems, you can make yourself window roller smart shutters, which will protect your windows at any time of year, and reassure your neighbors.

What Exactly Is Light Trespass?

Light trespass is something that can be relevant to both domestic and commercial premises and usually refers to illumination from one property lighting up areas outside of its perimeter – something known as ‘light spill’. Glare from lights or lights shining into the windows of other properties would also be light trespass.

The majority of light trespass complaints are toward commercial businesses, especially where they are open at night and in residential areas, for example gas stations, convenience stores and bars. However, residential property owners can also be responsible for light trespass, and this is something that is actually fairly easy to avoid if you design your lighting carefully and know what you should be taking into account. You can find more detailed information about the nature of light trespass and the best ways to avoid it in this article https://www.voltlighting.com/article-your-neighbors-and-outdoor-lighting/p/article-neighbors-lighting.

The Importance of Light Fitting Angles and Guards

When it comes to preventing any potential light trespass, the most important factors are the angles of the light, how the light source is guarded to keep light from ‘leaking’ out from its intended beam, and brightness.

You will naturally also care about these things as they will affect how well your light set-up achieves the look or effect you were going for, so making sure your design doesn’t make light trespass an issue shouldn’t really add any extra hassle to designing your lighting – it is just something to be aware of and to test for.

Angles should avoid light making its way outside the boundaries of your property or creating glare from any normal viewing angles. The best way to avoid glare is for the light source itself to be hidden, so you only see the effects of the light when looking at or approaching your home, rather than the bulbs themselves.

Guards and reflectors can be a great tactic for stopping light spill. You can use guards to make sure light doesn’t come from the sides or top of your light source, so only the focused light beam that you want is created when the light is turned on.

You can also consider buying ‘dark sky friendly’ lights. These are lights that have been created to focus light down toward the ground, where it is actually needed, and not to create additional light around them. They get their name from the fact that if all lights were designed in this way, the light pollution that stops people in highly populated areas from being able to see the stars on a clear night because the sky isn’t dark enough would be less of a problem. Certainly, just having these on your house won’t make stargazing any easier for the people in your area, but it may help against light trespass! You should also take in to account marine lighting.

Brightness

With LED lights, intense levels of brightness can be achieved with far less power than with older styles of lighting, however this doesn’t mean it’s a case of ‘the brighter the better’. Overly bright lights can be a major cause of light trespass, and extremely bright floodlights should only be used when you can be sure, by checking the area around your home, that there is a set-up you can use that won’t cause light to spill onto neighboring properties. LED lights have the perfect level of brightness and these are also considered aesthetic. Also, if you are looking for neighbour friendly lighting then these make the perfect option. Most domestic places don’t need floodlighting at that kind of intensity anyway – if you just want to be able to see to make use of your outdoor spaces when it is dark for socializing or relaxing, or you want a security light that will show you if anyone is approaching your home, stadium style floodlighting would be overkill.

When choosing brightness, think about what you want to use the lights for, and go with the minimum brightness that will comfortably allow for that. If you want lighting mainly for a cosmetic effect, subtle, dimmer lights that give your home a glow or even add some color can be easy to achieve without brightness or glare that will affect your neighbors. For security lighting, make sure the areas you need covered are covered well enough for you to see what is going on outside or for it to be picked up by your security cameras, but not so bright that it will wake up everybody in your street if a wild animal gets into your yard!

Seasonal Lighting

These are all good things to consider when adding new, permanent lighting to the external areas of your property, but what about when you are putting up lights that are more temporary? Some people put up particularly bold Christmas lights, for example, or put out more lighting in the summer when they want to entertain outside of their homes. In general, people tend to be more tolerant about lighting that is temporary or very occasional, however do be aware that some effects, for instance flashing holiday lights, can be quite annoying if they shine in through someone’s window. It may be best to limit the use of flashing and chasing effects to the early evening and then have the lights either on or off the rest of the time.

If you have a good relationship with your neighbors, you can of course simply check with them that they are OK with your temporary lighting plans, or if you live in a neighborhood where people tend to go all out with holiday decorations, it shouldn’t be a problem. However, every location and set of neighbors is different, so if you aren’t sure, always be as considerate as possible without spoiling your plans.

As you can see, light trespass is something that can be easy to forget about when you are excited about making your home look great with new lighting, but which can save you a lot of animosity and hassle if you consider it in your light fitting designs.

We asked our beauty writer Rachel McAlley to test the new NYK1 LashForce Serum and to let us know what she thought of the result. She simply answered, “Could there be a better beauty invention?”

With bigger brows and natural lashes dominating so many runway shows including Roland Mouret, Saint Laurent and Mary Katrantzou for SS18; NYK1’s LashForce Serum natural lash-enhancing product is set to become THE hero beauty product of 2018.

Discovered and reformulated by NYK1 owner Andrea Asquith, who has over 30 years experience in the beauty industry; LashForce is a dermatologically and ophthalmology tested serum (not tested on animals), which was specifically formulated to offer a highly effective, yet inexpensive ‘at-home’ product, and is already the No1 best-selling lash serum product on Amazon acos.

NYK1 Lash & Brow Serum works by stimulating blood flow to the hair follicles, creating more protein, vitamins and nutrients for the lash and brow roots, producing a more follicular action and ultimately more growth. The addition of B Vitamins make the lashes and brows stronger, preventing damage so that they stay put for longer. This allows them to extend much longer than the consumer’s normal growth rate cycle. As such, in 2-4 weeks your lashes will start to be thicker, darker, fuller and up to 2x longer by weeks 6-8.

Rachel said; “It may just be because I’m taking more notice of my eyelashes, but in just a few days my lashes definitely seem to be healthier and less brittle, I can’t wait to see the result in a few weeks time. If it continues to work as it is doing right now, could there be a better beauty invention?”

Through travelling I came across important ingredients such as ‘matcha’ It was important for me to combine my sweet tooth and being 100% healthy! and that’s how I came to give life to the ‘Raw Bake Station’ through love determination and experiences.

What is a Raw Bake Station must try

The business side didn’t come naturally, it was me stepping outside of my comfort zone – I am a very spontaneous person and live in the moment and now I had built this house with no foundations. So it was important for me to change my way of thinking and as much as all the numbers were scary, my hobby had become a business. And in order for it to work it required determination, effective time management and insert all my energy into something I love doing. I am naturally a creative person and for me to be creative at work by creating amazing treats is incredibly rewarding.

Who inspires you?

Family, my Dad – whose support has been monumental. I am also incredibly inspired by Olivia’s Kitchen and how she built her brand from nothing and I find her incredibly motivating

We already know you love to travel, what is your dream destination and why?

Get up at 5:40am every day and straight to the gym and that leaves me incredibly energetic. I am in my kitchen space early! constantly making sales. Engaging on social media, being inspired by girls supporting girls! and blogging. Every day is different I have so many different tasks that I need to achieve but this is maintained with my effective time management structure.

How do you deal with a bad day?

A raw baked treat! ha! Yoga and writing in a journal reminding myself where I started and how far I have come! my why goals personally bring me back to my happy zone.

Solu Candles launched after the founder, Kirstie, had a love affair with candles so this company has been many years in the making. She remembers her first home shopping trip to Ikea fondly. “Ooh, I must buy some candles because I’m a grown up now”. It wasn’t long before her slight OCD meant this type of candle wasn’t going to work out for her. Why wouldn’t these flippin candles burn all the way to the edge?!

From then on, she went on a long journey mixing between artisan, high street and designer brands. A lot of this was driven by social influence, her perceived standing in society and her bank balance! Throughout this time, her demands and expectations of a candle have changed.

Here, she tells us more about that story…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
We launched in Summer 2017, following a whirlwind of decisions based on a desire to produce a range of luxury candles that burnt cleanly and evenly. Learning what went into mass produced candles made me realise that I did not want to burn those, particularly with two small children in the house.

Solu was born, combining the names of our two beautiful daughters, Sophie and Lucy, in a bid to bring clean burning candles to a much wider market.

Whats your background?
I’ve worked in professional services all of my career but always had a creative side that needed embracing.

How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
There are currently a handful of people involved, predominantly my husband and I. I hand pour every candle and diffuser and we hope that, no matter how large we grow, the brand will always remain in the UK, being hand poured with care and attention. That is what our brand is all about.

My husband deals with all elements of logistics and order tracking and we have support on the sales side from a good friend.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
Absolutely not. We have learnt as we’ve gone along but there is no point in wishing you’d done something differently, otherwise how would you have got any better?

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
There have been a few! Part of the ethos of the brand is that it is an affordable luxury product, so packaging and branding has taken a lot of time to get right. There is more to come in 2018 on this, so watch this space.

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
2018 is almost here, where do you plan on taking the brand?

We already have meetings lined up to look at some different packaging ideas and testers circulating for new fragrances. In addition, we’re gearing up to talk to some fabulous retailers, who we’d be delighted to stock in 2018.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
There have been so many highlights and “pinch me” type moments. Being published in magazines is really flattering and very recently, we were invited to LA to attend an Oscars celebration party. However, the thing that means the absolute most to me is hearing people’s thoughts on the products. First and foremost, we will always focus on the quality of the product.

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
I love all three but my husband proposed to me in Paris so that’s the one that holds a very special place in my heart.

Style means….?
Being confident in your own skin

Best thing about London to you?
The food! There’s always a new restaurant on my list to try.

Statement shoe or statement bag?
Definitely a bag.

If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?
My Freddy jeans. Comfort and style all in one- what’s not to love

Favourite love song?
Don’t know much by Linda Ronstadt

Best place for a coffee?
Sat on the sofa with a friend, having a catch up

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Very early in my career, someone said to me “you’re tougher than you think you are, just believe in yourself”. I never forgot that and live by it most days.

Guilty pleasure?
Eating out- I really should cook more!

If you could spent 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
On Padstow beach in Cornwall. It’s the one place I can find pure relaxation. I don’t know what it is about that place, maybe the fact that it’s a walk down a beaten track to get there or the amazing view when you get there.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
We have plans coming out of our ears! Our focus for 2018 is moving from an online company to being in retail so follow us to watch the story unfold!

In the 1990’s, Mark Jordan spent three years playing football around the world visiting some truly amazing cities, each offering spectacular sights and sounds.

It was, however, the unique smell of each location that had the most impact on him. So much so, that he spent the next few years wondering how he could re-create the aroma and, therefore, re-live the experience.

In 2012, something happened that would make this dream come true and Aroma Holiday – World of scents was born. Here we find out what inspired Mark to launch his own range of scented candles…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
Aroma Holiday was officially launched in January 2014 with just five scented candles (we now have 18) all hand crafted on my kitchen table. In just two years I had turned a ‘lightbulb moment’ into a fully-fledged business.

The flash of inspiration came about while looking for a scented candle as a gift for my wife. Despite being surrounded by them in the Store, I could not find one that ‘meant something’ and so I went home empty handed but with an idea buzzing in my head.

What if I could create a scented candle that would remind us of our travels around the world?

I had no idea how I was going to achieve this. I just knew that I had to find a way of recreating memories of far flung places. I also understood that with smell being the most evocative of all our senses, the key to my success would be in creating a luxury scented product that ‘meant something’ to the owner.

What’s your background?
After spending three years footballing around the world, I joined Britain’s oldest department store, Voisin’s, in St Helier, Jersey as a buyer / manager. Renowned for stocking exclusive luxury brands such as Jo Malone and Michael Kors, my time there along with my passion for design and art were undoubtedly the catalysts for the creation of Aroma Holiday.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
I am sure every business owner asks the same question. And I am sure they will also feel the same as me that every stage is a voyage of discovery. Each with its pitfalls and rewards. If you micro-analyse every action taken, nothing gets done, making mistakes and learning from them is a fundamental part of creating a strong brand.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
I guess one of my biggest frustration is my desire for as many people as possible to experience our products and have the same it ‘meant something’ feeling that I have.

The other challenge is also to create volume products that retain consistency without losing the ‘hand crafted’ attribute. Quality control is the number one priority for me.

2018 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
The brand is about to go truly global. Our products can now be bought on-line and we ship throughout the world. We are also looking to increase retail distribution, especially in outlets such as duty free shopping, luxury hotel outlets and travel companies etc.

We also intend diversifying the product range to include sprays, diffusers and cosmetics etc. Watch this space.

To date what has been the highlight since launching?
The most satisfying highlight for me is to see how the business has grown from the original five scents of London, Paris, Rome, Istanbul and New York City to today where we produce 18 different locations each with its own unique aroma.

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
I love all three but for different reasons. However, if I had to pick just one, it would have to be New York. Since being overwhelmed with the sheer scale of everything, as an impressionable 19-year-old, to later years when the city re-invented itself as a ‘tourist friendly’ destination, for me, it’s still the most exciting city in the world.

Style means….?
To me, it’s what I call ‘timeless charisma’ – that is a thing or person you are attracted to but unsure why.

Best thing about London to you?
I love the eight Royal Parks, the inspiration for my ‘London Capital’ scent. Over 5000 acres of green and woody space all free for everyone to enjoy. They really are very special and we are lucky to have something in our Capital city that no other Country can claim.

If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear every day?
A pair of smart brogue boots.

Favourite love song?
Over the Rainbow – Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole (sadly, a beautiful voice that’s no longer with us). Listening to this tropical ballard , I light my AH Hawaii candle and it transports me straight back, to those beautiful Pacific islands.

Best place for a coffee?
As a guest, we enjoyed a ‘Flat White’ followed later by a cheeky Cocktail or two, at the Archers Spyglass Rooftop Bar. This fantastic boutique hotel situated in Midtown Manhattan NYC…. what a view and what a place!

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Just do it! Nike

If you could spend 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Nelson New Zealand. My sister and parents emigrated there and just love “Aotearoa” Maori for “Land of the Long White Cloud”.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
I would love more people enjoy the Aroma Holiday experience so I am currently working on making our products more accessible. This means finding different ways to for potential customers to experience our products. This could be in-store, in their home, at their place of business, or via social media etc.

We are continually looking for opportunities to share our passion of experiencing a product that ‘means something’ to the owner.

Having a pet will bring you untold joy – but it’s not just the owning of a pet and enjoying their company that is a reason to have an animal in the house. There are ways that being a pet owner can actually improve your quality of life.

Stress Management
Studies show that simply having contact with a furry companion can reduce stress levels. It produces a calming effect and, as a bonus, some animals (cats and dogs, in particular) are perceptive in this area; they know when their owner is feeling anxious. When that happens, they want to come closer to you. Although we don’t know exactly how and why they can do this (it could be to do with chemical changes in the stressed human’s body), it’s a very useful way to keep everyone calm. Lower stress levels lead to better health too.

Lower Blood Pressure
As well as lowering stress levels, being around animals can also lower our blood pressure. Simply brushing or stroking a pet is enough to lift your mood and keep your blood pressure at a safe level. Of course, a pet shouldn’t be the only way to deal with high blood pressure (exercise and a healthy diet help too), but it doesn’t hurt.

Exercise
Having a pet that needs regular exercise means that you are getting that exercise too. The first pet that will spring to mind is a dog; they need walking at least once a day, and more if possible, and walking is fantastic low impact exercise. However, even playing with your cat or cleaning out a hamster’s cage is a form of exercise if you do it right. Be careful not to overdo it, though; small animals can become unwell or sustain injuries if you push them too hard. It’s always useful to make an online search for a ‘vet near me’ so you know where your nearest vet is just in case.

Allergies
Although popular belief says otherwise, owning a pet does not mean you will be more open to allergies. Studies show that being exposed to a pet early on can reduce your chances of having animal-related allergies when you are older. So if you have children, getting a pet can actually make them potentially healthier adults. It also helps them to be responsible and caring, so there are many advantages for all the family that can be gained from owning a pet.

Socialising
Pets are also a good reason to socialise. Not everyone is a natural extrovert who is happy to chat to people and who makes friends easily. Having a pet will give you something in common with others, and this can open up communication channels. Something simple like walking your dog will put you in contact with like-minded people. Having friends to talk to decreases feelings of loneliness and depression. Even if you still prefer not to talk to other humans, having a pet around the house means you’re not alone, so those lonely feelings can still be banished.
