You only need to turn on your TV for two minutes to hear about what’s going on in Ukraine, but we rarely get to hear about how that affects people that live their or their livelihoods. For one business owner, she managed to use the negativity it as a way of giving back to the place she once called home.

Here, we talk to the founder of Coco Moka to find out more about her plans with her activewear brand, how knowing that her family are safe is her priority and what her plans are for the brand for the next five years…

Tell us about the journey that lead you to launching your brand Coco Moka…

I was born in Ukraine, Chernihiv after I finished University in Chernihiv with a specialization in two subjects Psychology and History, I moved to Finland to study International business and Marketing. In Finland I enjoyed nature, and learned about sustainability and recycling. Finland has the cleanest water you can drink from the tap, clean air, they have nature everywhere. They take care of their country and want to pass it on to the next generations.

During the Erasmus program in Finland, I came for a year to study Business and Marketing in Ireland. I still recall it as one of the best years of my life. Unfortunately, I developed an allergy during my time in Ireland and I got a rash on my skin from wearing synthetic clothing.

After I completed my studies in Finland, I moved to London to study a master’s degree in Business Psychology and after a few years studying and working in London, I came back to Ireland. In Ireland I worked in the tech industry specialising in digital advertising sales.

All during which I was looking for activewear which would not irritate my skin. During the pandemic, I decided to create activewear for myself because I could not find on the market anything like the performance activewear which would be suitable for people like me.

This is when Coco Moka was born. Coco Moka was created to solve two problems. I wanted to have activewear which would help to reduce skin irritation. Also, I wanted to make sure that the creation of activewear was not polluting our planet. We use OceanBalance fabrics to create our activewear. For every 2 kilograms (4.4. pounds) of OceanBalance™ yarns to produce sustainable fabrics, the environmental benefits include conserving five days of drinking water for one person and reducing the consumption of oil-based products by 3.785 litres.

You provide activewear for sensitive skin, why was this important to you?

When I developed my skin sensitivity, I did not know what to do about my irritated skin but I later realised that improving the quality of my life was up to me. I began by eating healthily and getting active with sports, however most sportswear would irritate my skin.

This inspired me to create my own line of luxury activewear, made of silky and smooth fabrics that would give me the feeling of a second skin. I kept this idea with me for many years, but I only started actively working on it during the pandemic.

I researched different fabrics until I found several types of eco-friendly materials which were soft like silk, yet flexible and durable for performance sports activities.

How do you want women to feel when wearing your clothes?

I want them to feel confident and beautiful. I want to help them enjoy sports with comfortable and eco-friendly clothing. I want women to find something that works for them. When women are wearing Coco Moka, I want them to enjoy the feeling of silky fabric on the skin. We focused on a few main values when we were working on the pillars of the brand. I wanted to make sure we created activewear so women could find quality, design and sustainability.

Slow and ethical fashion is at the forefront of what you do, can you tell us more about that?

Slow fashion is a key value of our business. I will give you some examples of why it is important.

“Fashion accounts for around 10% of greenhouse gas emissions from human activity, but there are ways to reduce the impact your wardrobe has on the climate. Annually, apparel manufacturing releases around 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gases.” (as quoted from BBC‘s article by Christine Ro*)

We are keen supporters of slow fashion which aims to reduce the textile waste clogging our landfills. This means our production schedules are slower and get produced in smaller batches, meaning that we have zero waste designs.

When I am running out of stock, I let my clients know that it will take a few weeks for us to produce the item that they are looking for.. This gives me confidence that with time consumer behaviours will shift more from mass-market towards slow fashion.

Looking back since launching the brand, is there anything you would do differently?

Yes, I would do many things differently. I know so much more now. I have learned a lot. I continue learning every day. I made mistakes but that is a part of the learning process.

I know now which designs are selling better and so I would invest more into some designs and less in others. I understand more now about the power of branding and brand awareness and focusing on building consumers’ trust. I understand better where I can find Italian eco-friendly performance fabrics we are using for our collections. How to find and be accepted by market places, how to work with different social media channels. It takes time and effort to learn what works and what doesn’t. I am still in the beginning of the long journey of building a brand that will stand the test of time.

However, I was very lucky to find a mentor who had already created her own fashion and activewear business, from a very small investment. I was working on the brand together with my mentor who helped me learn faster about the world of running an activewear business.

Collaboration with my mentor saved me a lot of time and investment. I worked with my mentor to source and test the right fabrics, design samples of the collection, produce the collection, find suppliers and distribution channels.

Talk us through an average day in your life…

I have to say I am very lucky. I truly believe and follow what Marc Anthony said: “ If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. “

I wake up early and start my day with gratitude, I thank the day for giving me an opportunity to live it fully and create something useful.

I am a coffee lover, I am not only drinking it but I wear it. We use in our collection one type of fabric made from recycled coffee. So in the morning I will have a cup of coffee and I will spend time looking out at the beautiful nature from my window in Dublin before I open my emails and start working on the tasks I have outlined for the day.

I love sports, but I became active and a bit more athletic later in my life. Last year when I turned 40 I made a promise to myself that from now on sport is a part of my routine, the same way as brushing teeth every morning.

I do not follow an exact schedule when I exercise. I do not prefer specific times like in the morning, lunch or in the evening. It depends on how busy my schedule is and when I have a free slot to do it. But I make sure I do 3-4 times per week some type of activity, walking, cycling, jogging, hiking, or following video classes at home.

During the day, in the evening and sometimes during weekends I work on operational and strategic tasks. As it is still early days in the business,I do take care of many aspects of it myself.

The most exciting part of the day, which I will never call work, is when I work on creating the new collection. I gather ideas together, make some sketches, choose fabrics, colours eetc. For my next collection I have collaborated with a talented Ukrainian illustrator Ksen Kryvonos, www.ksen.design who is based in Amsterdam and is working with me on the next project which has been in the works for almost a year and a half. Through her illustrations my vision of this collection is brought to life. I like to collaborate with different people to bring diversity and different talents to the brand.

During the time, when we worked on establishing the brand we were focusing on building the brand identity. My business partner Olga Garajeva and I collaborated with brand identity Ukrainian designer Daria Solomenko @darkdonna. We had many meetings during the time we worked together on creating the brand identity to reflect, through visual representation, the values of unique and luxury fabrics, sustainability and European design.

Sometimes, unfortunately not as often as I would like to, I participate in the photoshoots. I love photoshoots because I can see how happy models are when they wear our outfits. I feel satisfied and happy when I see models wearing my products and truly enjoying it.

Unfortunately, since February 24th my day changed, I woke up to the news about the war in my country. My family just evacuated from Chernihiv, Ukraine and they did not want to leave in the beginning, until the city was completely destroyed. I flew to Poland last week to meet them for the first time after the war started. Now they are safe and staying with me in Ireland.

During the past month I had to rethink and re evaluate many things in my life. I saw very clearly what was important and how fragile life can be.

While I was focusing on helping my family and my country I was leaning on collaborations with my mentor Elena Gromova @elena_gromova_fashlab and creative director Olga Garajeva @olgagarajeva and a digital agency who helps with our social marketing.

They helped to finalise the new collection and organise our last photoshoot which will be available in the beginning of May.

How long does it take you to work on a new product and what’s the process behind that?

It usually takes a long time, around 6 – 8 months. The process starts with imagining the look and feel of the product, then I find visually something similar that inspires me to create a sketch and discuss it with my mentor.

She helps me to understand if what I imagine can also be practical for women who will wear it. Sometimes I can see beautiful designs in my head but when I think about it, the outfit will not be practical.

After I decide to proceed with the design I choose fabrics, accessories if needed and we send it to the pattern maker. Based on the simplicity or difficulty of the product the sample can take from a few days to 5-6 weeks. It will usually take 3 tries of the sample to get to the final product.

After we approve production, it takes us up to 6 weeks, sometimes even longer to produce a collection. This is a slow fashion process and we make a continuous decision to work with slower production times. We have to plan in advance our stock level, taking into consideration production time is longer than in mass-market.

We just finished working on the second collection. We made soft see through skirts from plisse fabric, which you can wear on top of shorts or leggings and combine it with different tops and jackets. You can wear skirts on top of shorts or leggings together with a jacket, walk to the gym and come back looking stylish before, during and after your workout.

But I had one product which I created very quickly. In March I made a simple recycled organic T-shirt. I used my own paint to print it over the T-shirt to support Ukraine. I made two designs with slight variations of the print. I shared sales of this product to support humanitarian efforts back home.

How much has social media played a role in the success of your brand?

Social media plays a very important part of building any business, but fashion and active wear businesses it’s even more important. We are only at the beginning of this journey and we understand it will take some time and some investment to build a successful brand presence on social media.

Different channels have different nuances: what will work for Instagram will not work on Twitter. Brands should not ignore TikTok and get there even if they think the audience is too young for them.

We have a strategy for each channel and are working on slowly building organic presence first. We want to start with building a community who are interested in what we do and want to follow us because they want to know more about our brand. It takes time and we are willing to work on it until we succeed.

What is your go-to quote when lacking motivation?

I like this quote “Don’t stop until you are proud”.

What does self care mean to you?

Self-care means to me to be healthy physically and mentally so I can focus on what I love to do and spend quality time with important people in my life.

Where do you see the brand in the next 5 years?

I want Coco Moka in 5 years to have a B Corp Certification. I am building the business process with the questions in mind about how the brand will benefit customers, communities and the planet.

I want the brand to be recognised as one of the leading brands that provide luxury quality outfits for people with sensitive skin.

I want to reduce the negative impact fashion production has on our planet.

I will continue to focus my efforts to help Ukraine in humanitarian aid. I made an initiative to help the community where I offer a 60% discount on all products for Ukrainians who left the country because of the war and moved to Europe.

Opportunities to get glammed up have been thin on the ground in recent years, but a day at the races is always a great time to dig out that killer dress you’ve been waiting for a chance to wear. From the Cheltenham Festival in March to the Epsom Derby in June, the UK and Irish horse racing calendar is stacked with different options to dress up and enjoy the on-site hospitality.

One of the best-attended meetings on the schedule is the Grand National at Aintree in Merseyside. Held each April, an estimated 70,000 will be on hand to watch the main race in 2022, for which the Cheltenham Festival winner Delta Work is the 8/1 favorite, according to the Grand National odds. Rachael Blackmore, who has become the first woman to win this race and the Gold Cup, rides 16/1 shot Minella Times.

— The Telegraph (@Telegraph) April 7, 2017

There is no formal dress code at Aintree, however, patrons are encouraged to glow up for race day and plenty take the opportunity. Other festivals, such as Royal Ascot, have a very formal approach – there’s even a page dedicated to what you can and can’t wear at the summer extravaganza.

So, here’s your guide on how to dress to impress at the races.

Remember the Weather

Generally speaking, if you attend a flat racing festival the action will take place in the British summertime and so your options are far greater, with dresses of any length welcomed along with a pair of ‘sensible’ (you are likely to be on your feet for hours on end) shoes.

However, the National Hunt meetings, like the Grand National, Cheltenham Festival, and the Christmas Festival, all take place in the winter or early spring. We know what that means as far as the weather is concerned!

Suit trousers are en vogue right now, and you will have seen plenty of stars wear full-length trousers with either a jacket or blouse on top to the Oscars. Given the inclement weather at many horse racing meetings in the UK and Ireland, this could be the smart – in all senses of the word – way to go.

A dress with tights or even a jumpsuit are other options, and you may just be thankful you chose to wear a long coat too, another must-have item for winter racing.

Happy Feet

Be under no illusions: live horse racing is not a sit-down affair.

While there is hospitality at most leading racecourses, it is still usually standing only and if you have to walk to a train station or to the car park, you will be thankful that you went for a comfy pair of shoes rather than six-inch heels.

We all have a different pain threshold when it comes to the shoes we find comfortable, but a small heel or even mules might be the practical option. Wedges are also popular choices too because, while we all want to win best-dressed awards, we also don’t want to be hobbling around and nursing blisters for days, either!

A day at the races is a fantastic opportunity to glam up and dig your Sunday best out of the back of the wardrobe or, best still, acquire a whole new outfit to wear.

We won’t lie to you: St Patrick’s Day is one of the best for food and drink festivities – and 2022 is no exception. Whether you’re looking to see the day at your favourite local Irish bar – or you plan on cooking your own Irish stew feast at home, we’ve got your food and drink covered.

While historic celebrations centred around the “Feast of St Patrick” and involved eating a dish of bacon and cabbage post-church attendance, the more modern affairs typically include pints of Guinness and heartwarming Irish food.

However you’re celebrating St Patrick’s Day 2022, we want to make sure you’ve got all the information about where to source the best food and drink or how to indulge in your own creations at home.

  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced into 1/4-inch thin half moons
  • 4 ounces Dubliner cheese, plus extra for sprinkling on top
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • ¼ cup of mayonnaise
  • ¼ of a cup of Guinness
  • 1 tbsp of mustard (any variety)
  • 2 handfuls of freshly chopped chives
  • 3 tsp of marmite
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 2 packs of Mash Direct Skinny Fries
Method:
  1. Pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees.
  2. Cut a large yellow onion in half and then slice into 1/4-inch thin half-moons. Heat a 10-inch skillet on medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter and add in the onions. Toss to coat and cook slowly until golden and caramelized.
  3. Then, toss the onions into a bowl with the 8 ounces cream cheese, 1/4 cup mayonnaise, 4 ounces of the Dubliner cheese, 1tbsp of Mustard, a handful of fresh chopped chives and salt and pepper.
  4. Pour in 1/4 cup of Guinness
  5. Next, stir until thoroughly combined.
  6. Spoon the mixture into a small-ish oven safe dish, with a dollop of marmite on top.
  7. Spread the dip evenly and sprinkle with the remaining Dubliner cheese. Slip the pan-o-cheese into your preheated 400° oven for 25 to 28 minutes or until the dip is golden and bubbly.
  8. Finish with a scattering of the fresh chopped chives to garnish.
  9. Allow the dip to cool for at least 10 to 15 minutes before you start dipping.
  10. Whilst the dip is cooling, place your Mash Direct Skinny Fries on a baking tray and cook as per pack instructions.

Laura McDonald has always been interested in the workings of the mind so launching her business, Eden Wellness, was an inevitable path for her to take. A bundle of positivity and high vibes, Laura is the kind of person that will improve your life just by meeting her.

We spent some time with her to find out more…

Tell us about your journey to running your business?

It all started after I saw an ad in the newspaper for a hypnotherapy course in 2003. I was always fascinated by the workings of the mind. I had studied psychology briefly, but at university my degree was in Linguistics and English Literature. I had ideas of becoming a writer, a journalist, a speech therapist, or a teacher, but I was intrigued by this ad and in hypnosis and hypnotherapy. On the first weekend of that course, I phoned my Mum in the lunch break and said ’this is the area I am going to work in!’ I loved the idea of being able to help people, choose my working hours, and being my own boss. Of course, I had a very romantic idea of how it might be, and while it is great being able to do all that, it’s not that simple!

I got straight to work a month or so after completing the course, with a job in a SureStart clinic in Ladbroke Grove, helping pregnant women to stop smoking. I then went on to rent a room in a health centre in Willesden Green and worked there for a year, before moving to Ireland and renting a room in a health centre here from 2007. Since then, my business has gone from strength to strength. After 5 years in practice, I became a hypnotherapy supervisor, supporting other hypnotherapists around the world. I qualified in BWRT (BrainWorking Recursive Therapy), became a mentor/supervisor for BWRT, and opened my own training school. I started off running professional practitioner training courses for people wanting to become hypnotherapists, and shortly after, I got my license to teach BWRT as well, also mentoring and supervising BWRT practitioners worldwide. Over the years I’ve gone on to expand my coaching skills, trained in Reiki, became a Personal Trainer, qualified as a Yoga teacher, and co-authored my first book over lockdown in 2020.

Can you tell us about your personal story and how your experiences have shaped your outlook today?

I was born and raised in Wembley, North West London. My parents were Irish, but my mum left Ireland to have me in the UK, so I always had a sense of uncertainty in myself and my identity. I grew up with 2 older step-brothers and 1 younger sister, from Mum’s marriage to my adoptive Dad. Knowing what I know now about the brain and the mind, I can understand so much of what I was experiencing, and this is why I love being able to help others with whatever it is they are dealing with. Many issues can boil down to a poor sense of self, a lack of confidence or self-belief. All this can be changed and built up, which is wonderful. I can’t help but try to figure everyone out though, which can be a hindrance as well as a blessing! I did eventually meet my biological dad and all his family, and have since moved to Ireland to bring up my own family.

How did you decide to wanted your career to end up being about supporting others?

I guess it was because I would have liked similar support myself, I suppose. Like so many, I never understood why I felt the way I did, why things were difficult, why the mind can seem to turn against us from time to time. When I was studying hypnotherapy, I thought how amazing it would be to have elements of it taught in schools, from the very start. If children understood their minds as early as possible, we would have far less stressed, anxious, or depressed adults in years to come, and I firmly believe that.

If you weren’t doing what you do now, what other paths could you have taken?

I would love to have been a surgeon! I only realised that in the last couple of years. I actually did look into it recently, but by the time I would qualify, it’d almost be time for me to retire. Next time! At university I had a view to go into writing, or the jobs mentioned above. I still love writing, I always did, it was a form of therapy for me. It’s something I am not finished with yet and see it in my future. Whether or not that is just in the form of more regular blogs, or another book, I am not sure. There will definitely be courses written, though.

Where does your drive come from and what tips do you have for keeping focus?

If I am working with people to help them improve their lives, I should also seek to do the same for myself. I try and test every modality that I work with, before I attempt to inspire someone else to do the same. I don’t have it all figured out, but I like to think I have techniques and skills to help me along the way. The drive is what gets me to where I want to be or what I want to achieve. I study successful people, and look at how they’ve done it. To keep focussed, I would suggest visualising what it is you want. Feel how that feels. Know that to get there, you need to stay on track, be disciplined, and that the view will be 100% worth it. Think about times in the past when you’ve lost focus and let it get out of control, and how disappointed you were. Always remember that you are the one who can make things happen. When you come up against walls, closed doors, etc, allow yourself time to go inward for a while, but always come back and think of other ways to make it happen. What else can you do? How else can you succeed? What lessons have you learnt along the way? Always come up with a plan B, C, D… whatever is necessary!

For our entrepreneurial readers, what advice do you have for them to start their own thing?

It can take time, but keep going. Not much happens overnight, and you might often find yourself frustrated, impatient, and losing motivation, but keep going. Consistency is key – keep doing what you are doing, keep showing up, get as much exposure as you can and let people know you are there. Stay passionate about what it is you do and always remember why you started.

What personal achievement of yours means the most to you and why?

My family. I have a lovely supportive husband and four beautiful children – three girls and a boy, and I work my business around family life as much as possible.

Entrepreneurial souls are often burning the candles at both ends, as a wellbeing professional what tips do you have for our readers when they are feeling emotionally exhausted?

Slow down, tune in, and rest! Being constantly on the go is like a badge of honour these days, but it’s not clever. I am not always the best for going to bed at a reasonable hour – I never was – and it filters into my day somehow. Something will suffer, whether it’s my concentration, the housework, my energy levels or falling behind with work. Basically, I won’t perform as well as I could. I run a weekly mediation group and I am always stressing the importance of siting in silence, or meditating, or just doing something for ourselves, to recharge. We will be better for everyone around us, and better at work, when we are rested and our minds are clutter free, allowing ourselves to be even more productive! Get a decent sleep, drink at least 2 litres of water, eat clean, and mind your mind and body.

If you ever have a creative block / funk; how do you get yourself out of it?

I often just have to stop whatever it is I am trying to do. The more I sit there trying to accomplish something and can’t, the more frustrated I become, which of course makes the block even stronger. If I stop, walk away, and do something else instead, it helps to reset everything and bring down the blocks. It’s like having a change of scenery to bring down stress levels. Unless I am writing – that’s different. I just type ‘I don’t know what to write’ and it’s amazing how much starts to flow from there!

Do we all have that one city that we’ve never been to? Like, how did we get to this age, and travel all over the world but have never been to that one city?!

For me, that city was Liverpool. A lifelong lover of The Beatles, Liverpool should never have escaped my grasp for so long, and yet here we are.

I’ve stayed at a Melia hotel before, in Magaluf, representing House of Coco in the Magaluf half marathon. The hotel was modern and luxurious, with experimental art adorning the walls, so I had an idea of the quality to expect at Liverpool’s brand new four star INNSiDE by Melia.

The new INNSiDE Liverpool lives up to the reputation. Situated just a couple of minutes walk from Albert Docks, the city centre is easy to navigate to, and you have the wonderful Gino D’Acampo restaurant on the first floor and its 360 Sky Bar up top.

Walking into the building you first encounter a pop-up shop selling flowers, it’s a cute greeting and there’s a spot for an influencer selfie surrounded by blooms underneath a neon sign.

The open plan reception is handled by casual and super friendly staff, they give off the air that nothing is any trouble. They gave us tips on what to do whilst we were there and made sure we felt right at home.

Rooms

Our suite was incredible. We had views from full-length windows on two sides, one facing Ireland and the other looking over the docks at the hills of North Wales.

The room felt huge but was really well designed in order to make the most of the space. The bedroom area with massive TV was filled with a huge comfortable bed, the dressing area and sofa faced out over the docks, there was a separate coffee/ breakfast table corner, and the open-plan shower and sink area.

It was gorgeous, modern, clean lines, and great views. Plus you get cosy slippers and the most comfortable dressing gown hoodies ever! I’d suggest booking two nights so you can spend the second night with a hangover, in those hoodies, full of Gino D’Acampo pasta, watching a movie in bed.

The Restaurant and Bar

Before dinner, we booked a table at the 360 Sky Bar. Surrounded by walls of glass, the view over this heartful city envelops you. As the night draws in, the city comes alive and from the sky bar you feel the buzz.

As with the rest of the hotel, the staff treat everyone like a VIP. I was getting 80s power suit vibes from up there for some reason, it’s inexplicable, but it’s there.

Back down to the first floor and we couldn’t have been more excited for dinner. Gino continues to dominate city after city with his restaurants and it’s not just his name that makes it happen.

The food is exceptional, with a playful menu full of enough choice, but not overwhelming amounts. Dishes are listed with a little bit of personality from Gino himself explaining a bit more about the recipe such as where it came from, who loves it most in his family, and that sort of thing.

We enjoyed every moment of dinner. From being seated with a direct view of the open kitchen, advice from the experienced staff with our order, and portions that will make you glad you booked. There’s nothing better than delicious food at a special restaurant that serves enough so that you’re not left needing more.

And finally

We spent the night dancing our little hearts out in the famous Cavern Club. As mentioned up top, I absolutely love The Beatles and this is where they started. We paid just a fiver each to get in, with no queue, and there was a resident band playing all of the hits. The place was packed with everyone from students to the over 60s reliving their youth.

Liverpool is a stunning city full of impressive architecture and naturally warm people. So if you’ve never been, just do it.

For good vibes, plenty of space, and no worries at all, the INNSiDE by Melia Liverpool is the one. We will definitely be back… if nothing else, to do the same again but with an added extra night in one of those dressing gown hoodies!

Book a room from £64 per night at INNSiDE Liverpool.

Beth and Oonagh are the brains behind Bien Etre, a lifestyle brand that started in London but the Southern French Alps was the inspiration behind the brand’s visual identity and values. Over time the brand has evolved to help people lead better lives all over the world. With the launch of the brand timed just around the start of the pandemic, the initial plans to host retreats was put on the back burner as they were forced to rethink their strategy.

This duo were born to always win and of course between the two of them they were able to grow a successful brand despite the adversity they faced in the early days. Here, we spent some time with Beth and Oonagh to find out more…

Tell us about the journey that led you to launching your brand, Bien Etre?

Beth – One day in 2002, my dad suddenly collapsed. The company he worked for had just been bought out so he was regularly commuting to London and was studying for a diploma in marketing to keep up with the competition. He had a young family to provide for so losing his job wasn’t an option…and it all proved too much to handle. Later that day, he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, a chronic and incurable illness that would involve injecting 5 times a day and micromanaging his diet and lifestyle for the rest of his life. We didn’t know what all this meant, but my parents refused to let it define our lives, so in early 2003, they moved me and my little sister out to the Southern French Alps to pursue a stress-free lifestyle and give us a healthier upbringing. A move which would also inspire the birth of Bien Etre 16 years later.

Fast forward to 2019 where I was living in central London and working in a job that I hated. I lived for the weekend and my holidays, and I had developed a form of social anxiety that made public transport, shopping malls and meetings extremely uncomfortable. Then one day, I looked around and realised…I was heading down the same road as my dad and was really unhappy with where my life was headed. In that moment, I decided to take action. I started thinking about my dream job, talking to people, doing research. Finally, the idea came to me in a yoga class (by one of our now Directory members), I thought ‘why don’t I bring all these stressed-out Londoners to the Southern French Alps and show them what life could be like’. I registered the business two weeks later.

I had to deal with Covid only 6 months after launching, but with the help of my best friend and business partner, Oonagh English, we managed to build what is now, one of the world’s fastest growing wellness platforms that’s attracting the likes of the Tatler Address Book and is actively enhancing lives in over 33 countries…only 10 months after launching. Our mission is to make the world of well-being more accessible to people worldwide, bringing them the best quality information and support in order to help them make better decisions for their well-being and shape their best life. Wellness isn’t a luxury, it’s something that we’re all entitled to and should work on every day. It’s been one hell of a journey, but it’s still only just the beginning and I couldn’t be more excited to see what the future holds for us.

Oonagh – I have suffered from anxiety and depression since childhood. This has lead me on a journey of inner reflection and self discovery. My own journey to finding physical and mental health lead me to discover how hard it can be to find the right education and support to fit your personal needs. When Beth, brought up the idea of creating Retreats that cater to all areas of life, I realised that this was the perfect way to create an environment for people to focus on personal development. When the pandemic hit in March 2020, we were forced to cancel our retreats but we still wanted to provide a supportive environment and a way for like minded people to come together and support one another. This inspired us to create The Circle and the rest is history.

You’ve had to pivot from your original plans due to the pandemic, what has been your biggest learning curve since then?

Beth – Probably that the world is constantly changing and you need to work hard to keep up with it. It also makes it exciting though as it brings about new ideas on how we can use our brand to help people, professionals and companies all over the world. The Circle, for instance, has been a result of the pandemic and is now the centrepoint of our audience’s activity, bringing together wellness enthusiasts in over 33 countries. Change must be seen as an opportunity, not a barrier and that’s something that we pride ourselves on.

Oonagh – The value of being flexible and being able to adapt. Before the pandemic, I would assume so many things about the future and based my plans on them. For example, that we would be able to run retreats how we had planned. Having to face the uncertainty of the world has helped us to create a model that caters to our community members while also honoring the uncertainty in the world at the moment.

How do you want your people to feel when working with you?

Beth – We want them to feel safe, supported and empowered. We take immense pride in our people as the brand is nothing without them and ‘you’re only as good as the people who work for you’. Our employees are regularly given raises and promotions (if they prove themselves of course) and normally get at least 50% off our retreats. We’re working to become one of the top companies to work for in the UK – we love working with passionate, motivated people and love to heavily reward them.

Talk us through your wheel of life and what this concept is…

Beth – We’ve looked at all the wellness models out there and have boiled them down to what we believe are the 6 key dimensions that make up our well-being, we call it the ‘Bien Etre model’. The dimensions are your mental and physical health (the two which we all know about), but also your social, spiritual, occupational and environmental. They’re all interconnected, meaning that they all affect each other and therefore they should all be worked on simultaneously if possible. A brief description of each dimension can be found on this page. And here’s a great article that sums up why they’re all so important.

The last 18 months have been testing for many, what advice would you offer to anyone trying to find joy in every day?

Beth – It might seem cliché, but the fact that we’re all still here, living a life in the 21st century is such a gift. Certainly, most people reading House of Coco have things to be grateful for, whether it’s a loving family or relationship, a good job, a working pair of arms and legs or simply the fact that we’re not in Afghanistan right now! There are so many joys that can be found in the everyday, you just need to look and appreciate what you have, and if you can’t find any, go out and make some!

Oonagh – I would also add that some days are simply not joyful. Sometimes just honoring how we feel can be the best thing. Allowing the grief, sadness and fear to be there and processing it so that we can move on. If our mind is full of anxiety, it doesn’t allow a lot of space for joy. Sometimes we can feel a lot of pressure to “be joyful” and “grateful” despite the trauma we might be going through. Being honest with ourselves can be the best way to move through it. If you feel stuck I would recommend finding an expert to support you through this whether that be a therapist, coach or health psychologist. At Bien Etre, many of our consultants offer free initial consultations, you can find out more about our experts and connect with them here: The Directory — Bien Etre (wearebienetre.com)

Looking back since launching your business, is there anything you would do different?

Beth – I’d maybe try to be more structured in our approach and business plan, but I’m not giving myself a hard time about it as we’ve had to evolve so quickly due to Covid and it’s definitely paid off. The key is to know your audience as much as you can and evolve with them over time.

Oonagh: Great question and a difficult one to answer. If we had known that there would be a pandemic and in person businesses would be essentially shut down. We would have primarily focused on growing the online community first. One of the biggest lessons we have learned over the last 18 months was to prepare for every eventuality.

Tell us more about what inspires you…

Beth – My dad – he’s a world-class mountaineer with Type 1 Diabetes – the perfect example of someone who has made his passion into his work by founding AlpBase: a holiday letting company in the Alps, and Action4Diabetes: Asia’s most successful charity for children with Diabetes. He loves every second of his life and prides himself on never experiencing ‘Monday morning blues’. He’s the one that taught me to ‘never give up’ and that ‘I can always do more than I think I can’.

Oonagh – For me, anyone who chooses growth over giving up inspires me. Sometimes the hardest thing can be to get out of bed in the morning and keep going. Sometimes simply surviving the day is the biggest accomplishment. The sky inspires me. It’s so vast and feels infinite. Whenever I feel trapped, I look at the sky.

If you could describe your brand in three words, what would they be?

Trustworthy – Inclusive – Inspirational

What advice would you offer to anyone wanting to launch their own wellness business?

Beth – A lot of people come to me and ask for advice about becoming a life/health coach. I always give them the same advice: make sure you have a solid personal brand and a good personal story to back it up. Then find your niche and make sure it’s only composed of your favourite type of person – people that you’re seriously passionate about helping. This can take time to figure out so try working with lots of different types of people to figure out who you prefer working with. Then…JUST START! So many people just hang around waiting for the ‘right moment’ to start their business. When the idea to start a business came to me in a yoga class one day, I didn’t wait around and registered the business two weeks later.

Oonagh – My advice, don’t give up at the first hurdle or indeed the 10th. Most people don’t succeed on their first try. I have failed so many times. Those experiences have helped shape my success.

Talk us through an average day in your life…

Beth – I try to make time for all dimensions of my well-being every day, so an average workday will look like this:

07:20 – I get up, make my herbs (prescribed by well-being Guru and Chinese Medicinal Herbalist, Nona Taylor from our Directory – and coincidentally Oonagh’s mum), and do at least 20mn of stretching and yoga to wake my body up. I also try to do a bit of meditation or just simply sitting and thinking of all the things that I’m grateful for. I don’t generally have breakfast (unless I’m doing a big physical activity that day such as surfing or skiing) as I’m never hungry in the mornings (which works well for intermittent fasting). Sometimes I might get peckish and have something on toast mid-morning.

08:00 – I catch up on emails for the first half hour and then work solidly through to about 13:00 – 13:30 with 10mn breaks at 1h intervals. This is because our brains are much more active and productive in the mornings, making it the best time to concentrate and get a load of work done. Apparently we can’t concentrate more than 3-4 hours a day and aren’t able to be productive for more than 6 hours a day, so I’ve built my whole schedule around this – and it definitely works for me!

13:00 – I make a healthy lunch and then go for a 30-45mn walk to digest and get some fresh air – I’ll generally listen to music or a podcast during this time. If I’m in an exotic location I’ll go skiing/surfing or do something fun in the afternoon. Otherwise I’ll come back from my walk, make a green tea, do some reading and then workout for about 30mn (I alternate my workouts based on the 8 types of physical fitness and try to incorporate all of them as much as possible.). I sometimes have a nice relaxing bath with lots of home-made salts and essential oils (as I’m also an Aromatherapist). Sometimes I get creative and make some homemade sprays, skin oils and other beauty products with my essential oils – it’s a small hobby of mine.

I then do another hour or so of work somewhere between 17:00 and 19:00 (as that’s when your brain’s concentration starts to go back up) and ensure that I’ve done everything I needed to do and catch up on emails.

19:00 – I’ll make myself a nice healthy dinner and then watch some netflix. I’ll go to bed around 22:30 and am very strict with this as I really need my 8 hours!

I’ve tried so many routines and this one works for me, but might not work for other people. The key is to try different things until you find the perfect routine. And don’t be influenced by all that 5am lot – what works for them might not work for you (I’ve tried it and definitely couldn’t keep it up!).

Oonagh – Honestly, I used to put so much pressure on myself to create a routine and be a certain way. Over the years I tried so many different things. What I find works for me now is to plan my day around my energy and inspiration. As an entrepreneur, my daily tasks will vary hugely depending on what projects I am working on at the moment. I love meditation and I always find some time in my day for my practice. I also make sure I do something for my mental health. This might be going for an energising walk in nature, talking to my coach or spending some time in my bed listening to my favourite audiobook, Harry Potter. I have learned over time what my energy fillers and what my energy drainers are and I balance those out throughout the day.

How much has social media played a role in the success of your brand?

Quite a lot – we rely heavily on Instagram (as that’s where most of our consumers are) to paint the right image of our brand and values and have been through 8 different social media managers before finding the right person.

You’re very well traveled but which place really has your heart?

Beth – This is a difficult question as I’ve lived in three different countries (England, France and Netherlands). I feel both ‘at home’ in England and France, but what I’ve also uncovered along the way, is that my heart and home simply lie within myself – and this is very important when travelling. I’ve been working on myself and my self-love throughout my twenties as I used to get anxious about travelling far from home without my friends and family due to a lack of self confidence. But I’ve finally come to the realization that I am my own home and I can feel centred, at peace and at home wherever I am in the world because I believe in myself and am 100% comfortable in my own skin. It’s taken years to get to this place, but I’m so glad that I made the effort as it’s really paid off.

Oonagh: I would say my home land, Ireland. In particular West Cork. It’s rugged, wild and so nourishing. I love the fresh air, the smell of salt. The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks. To me it’s home.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Beth – Costa Rica – for the surfing, landscapes and biodiversity, and also where Oonagh and I are going for the whole month of May and we can’t wait!

What is your go-to quote when lacking motivation?

I remind myself of everything that I’ve already accomplished and then I tell myself to “never give up”, and that “you can always do more than you think you can”.

Oonagh – “We are what we think, all that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world” Buddha

What’s next for you and the brand?

Beth – We can’t wait to get our retreats back up and running and are planning some Alpine retreats for our members next September! However, we’re also working on creating our own custom-made app, that will deliver even more value, support and information in an even more accessible way. Next year is going to be a very important year for us. We have so much in the pipeline and can’t wait to start helping even more people around the world.

What does self care mean to you?

Beth – This seems to be a confusing topic, and people generally associate it with physical self care (such as working out or taking a relaxing bath), but to me (and the message that we’re trying to get out there), is that it means taking care of each of the 6 dimensions of our well-being: physical, mental, spiritual, occupational, environmental and social. Only when we look after all dimensions simultaneously, do we achieve overall well-being, creating feelings of euphoria and fulfilment.

Oonagh -Self care is taking a good hard look at your life and figuring out why you are wound up in the first place. Why do you feel you need to “getaway” from your life for the weekend? Are there some things that you can change or is there an area you can get support in? Self care is getting enough sleep so that you’re not constantly exhausted. It’s eating delicious, nutritious food on a regular basis and making sure you’re drinking enough fluids. It’s doing things that allow you to maintain a baseline state of peace and relaxation.

Planning a honeymoon could be as stressful as planning a wedding. You’re often hard-pressed to pick a place that ticks off all points in your bucket list without breaking the bank. And the timing has to be perfect. Indeed, some couples choose to delay their honeymoon for a number of reasons. But you can’t postpone indefinitely, or else it will be no longer be a honeymoon.

Yet even if you’ve planned everything right down to the last detail, there is always a chance that something could go wrong. Think of cancelled flights, schedule conflicts, natural disasters, and, more recently, travel restrictions. Would you stall your honeymoon, or would you switch to plan B?

Whether you’re making 11th -hour changes to your plan or finally going on a honeymoon after several delays, you shouldn’t settle for a lesser experience. Here are five incredible last-minute honeymoon destinations that don’t feel like last-minute options.

Egypt

Positioned where the ancient and the contemporary intersect, Egypt stands as an emblem of historical grandeur, making it an enchanting destination for honeymooners. It’s not just the allure of the Great Pyramids of Giza or the mystical Sphinx that captivates; Egypt is also a land of romantic Nile cruises, vibrant bazaars, and expansive deserts under starlit skies, offering an ideal backdrop for love and adventure.

Embarking on an Egypt honeymoon tour opens up a realm of experiences. Couples can enjoy serene Nile cruises, marvel at ancient temples, or dine under the vast desert sky. The juxtaposition of ancient wonders against the backdrop of the Nile’s tranquility offers a unique setting for romance.
Egypt’s Red Sea coastline is unparalleled for beach enthusiasts, boasting world-class coral reefs and luxurious resorts. Destinations like Sharm El Sheikh combine relaxation and adventure with their pristine beaches and vibrant marine life, perfect for diving and snorkeling.

Historical explorations in cities like Luxor, known as the world’s most excellent open-air museum, offer a deep dive into ancient Egypt’s marvels. Walking through the Valley of the Kings or the grandeur of Karnak Temple allows couples to immerse themselves in the richness of Egyptian history.
Incorporating a honeymoon tour in Egypt means weaving together moments of awe and affection amidst the country’s majestic landscapes and monumental legacies. It’s an invitation to experience the magic of a civilization that has fascinated the world for centuries, creating memories that are as timeless as the land itself.

Croatia

Set on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, Croatia is one of the foremost destinations for beach lovers. If you love soaking up the sun and watching sunsets, this beautiful Balkan country is for you. Croatia boasts 2715 hours of sunshine a year and some of the best sunsets in the world. The beaches themselves are not only stunning but something you are not likely to find anywhere else. One of its most famous beaches, Zlatni Rat, shifts in colour and shape depending on the wind.

Sailing is one of the best activities to do in Croatia. You can join an open-for-all yacht party or splurge on a private tour. After all, the waters surrounding Croatia are stunning and peppered with over a thousand islands and isles. There are ones with big names such as Brac, Krk, Hvar, and Veliki Brijuni, which hosted celebrities Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Sophia Loren. Ireland

The Emerald Isle is notoriously known for its rain. But what it lacks in sunny days and balmy beaches, it makes up for its charismatic culture, captivating countryside, and charming castles – lots of them.

In Ireland, you can experience royal accommodations, literally. Stay in a restored castle and feel like you are living a fairytale happy-ever-after. If you like some light adventures in the great outdoors, the country has plenty to offer, including fishing and paddling in the lakes or biking and hiking on the quiet country lanes. The long stretch of Irish coastline features hidden coves and sandy bays, perfect for lounging and beachcombing.

See as much of the country as you can on a scenic drive along the coastal Wild Atlantic Way or around the Ring Kerry. Be amazed by the rugged and lush coastal landscape dotted with sleepy seaside villages and free-roaming wildlife. Make a trip to the 700-foot Cliffs of Moher, the limestone pavement of Burren, the Kylemore Abbey in Connemara, and the Rock of Cashel in County Tipperary. Drop by Killarney National Park to explore its collection of hills, mountains, lakes, woods, and waterfalls.

When in Ireland, you should not miss touring Dublin, or at least the Guinness Factory, famous for its historic brewery, liquor tastings, and rooftop bar. For an upscale date night, dine at the two Michelin star restaurant, Patrick Guilbaud.

The Galapagos Islands

Do you love nature? There is nothing more romantic than going on a luxury cruise to one of the world’s best destinations for wildlife exploration, the Galapagos. Located roughly 1,000 km off the coast of Ecuador, the archipelago is isolated and makes the perfect setting for a quiet and intimate getaway.

On a small cruise ship, supplied by a reputable river cruise company, like Rainforest Cruises, you can reach the remotest places of the islands and discover an unspoiled wealth of incredible flora and fauna. There are sea lions sunning on the shores and marine iguanas diving into the sea. You will find giant tortoises that weigh up to 660-lbs and grow 4-ft long and the Galapagos penguins, the only species found north of the equator. You can watch blue-footed boobies dancing to attract their lifetime mate and spot elegant pink flamingos catching fish in a saltwater lagoon.

There are other exhilarating activities on the islands, including snorkeling, diving, biking, and hiking. While the Galapagos is widely known for its wildness, it never lacks luxuries and the finer things in life. After a long day of excursion, head back to your luxury lodge or beachfront villa, dip in the pool or go for a relaxing massage before enjoying a sumptuous dinner under the stars.

We live in an era where the “authentic” is prized above all else in our voyages of discovery, while the logistical challenges of international travel have meant that “slow travel” is at the top of the agenda once more.

In order to truly discover the destinations we wish to explore and gain an understanding of the culture beyond the tourist traps and the chain restaurants, you should look to venues and spaces where tourists rarely venture.

One stellar example of this is the bingo hall, which you can find in towns and cities all over Europe and The Americas. Here is why you should stop by a bingo parlor on your next vacation.

1. Meet the Locals

One of the best reasons to visit the bingo parlor, whether you are traveling in Madrid, Manchester, Milan, or Miami, is that you are going to be able to mingle with the locals and be far away from the tourist traps. Bingo has always been a community pastime, with the bingo halls that line urban neighborhoods representing a perfect opportunity to socialize and get to know the community you are traveling through, rather than just sticking to your bubble.

2. You Can Experience Bingo Before You Go

Naturally, you might be nervous about your first bingo experience in a foreign city. If so, you can try international bingo online, which allows you to play real-money bingo in English, German, Russian, and Portuguese. You can also play scratch cards online that are based on bingo and themed around different cultures, such as Ireland or France. This can help you get to grips with the game and ensure you arrive prepared.

3. A Cheap Night Out

If you’re looking to save a buck or two on your travel experiences, the bingo hall is the place to be. Instead of dropping stacks of cash at some VIP nightclub, you can enjoy a raucous and more authentic night at a local bingo hall. It is well known that the food and drink available at bingo halls tend to be dirt cheap, while the price of entry is almost nothing and the games go on all night. What’s not to like? If you’re serious about saving some of your hard-earned cash on your travels, bingo is one effective way to do it.

4. Master the Basics of a Language

No matter where you are going or how long you are staying, learning a bit of the local language will pay dividends for the rest of your life. If you want to learn the essentials of a language in a low-stakes setting, try a local game of bingo. At the very least, a bingo game will be a fabulous crash course in how to say numbers in a foreign language, while the non-touristy nature of the setting means that people might be less inclined to switch straight to English when you speak to them. Give it a try and you might be pleasantly surprised at how much you learn.

These are some of the reasons to hit up a bingo parlor on your next travel odyssey. Go against the grain and make some truly unique memories.
