After many months of being grounded at home, intrepid doggy journalist TeamCocopup and I once again dusted off our travelling boots and set out to explore the best dog-friendly destinations the UK has to offer.

The first leg of our post-COVID adventure begins in the sleepy coastal town of Winterton-on-Sea, where we ticked off our very first dog-friendly staycation of 2021 at the wonderfully charming April Cottage.

April Cottage is coastal cosiness at its finest, and part of the Winterton Cottages portfolio. Winterton Cottages offers an incredibly wide range of self-catering accommodation in Winterton-on-Sea which boasts easy access to the breathtaking Norfolk Coast. All the cottages are also just a short drive away from all the tourist attractions of Great Yarmouth.

Great Yarmouth is just a short drive away and is once again beginning to welcome tourists this summer. You can explore all of the picturesque beaches of Norfolk’s east coast on one of Great Yarmouth’s open-topped buses (also known as ‘open toppers’). Later this summer, you can get lost in an artisan street food fair at the seafront’s historic Edwardian ‘Empire’ building, or have some family fun at the funfair in Pleasure Beach which has just introduced a new ‘Supreme Waltzer’ ride. Adrenalin junkies can also embark on a ‘Slingshot Ride’ or take in the view of Great Yarmouth’s ‘Golden Mile’ in a London Eye-style Big Wheel.

What April Cottage may lack in size; it certainly makes up for in comfort. This beautifully furnished home sits right in the heart of the town and is overflowing with character. Inside, the decor is shabby chic with a contemporary twist. Downstairs, there is a cosy living room with a TV and woodburning stove. A separate dining room leads to a small kitchen, equipped with everything you need to serve up a hearty meal. We were greeted with a delightful welcome package that comprised of posh dog-treats, snacks and of course, a bottle of pink fizz.

Upstairs, there are two bedrooms which each feature tastefully selected neutral interiors and can comfortably sleep four guests. The generous bathroom has a free-standing bath, while the second bedroom houses the shower. Not to mention, there is a small, enclosed courtyard, which is a bonus if you are travelling with your pups.

One of the cottage’s best features is how close it is to the Winterton Beach and the dunes, which are a short five-minute stroll from your door. The dunes offer plenty of incredible wildlife to look out for including skylarks and the rare Natterjack Toad. While we sadly missed them during our daily run through the dunes, we were told that in certain times of year, you can even see grey seals sunbathing on the shore.

TeamCocopup Charlie comes alive at the beach, and luckily Winterton Beach is very dog-friendly. It is the perfect spot to spend a quiet and energising afternoon under the sun, minus all the crowds of more popular beaches in the UK. You can also enjoy the sea air while watching happy dogs frolick along the shore and go for swims on the break.

While a lot of the beloved pubs and restaurants were closed during our visit, we ventured, just a short 15 minute drive away to the Boathouse at Ormesby, which boasted plenty of outdoor space to dine while enjoying the view of the Norfolk Broads. The Boathouse offered delicious pub grub, exceedingly friendly service, and a colourful array of birds to entertain you during your meal.

Walking enthusiasts (of both human and dog variety) have plenty to explore in Winterton-on-Sea with several coastal walks to choose from. Here, you can explore East Somerton and even see a ruined church hidden in the trees. On the beach, there are the Winterton Dunes, and in town, there are plenty of historical sites and quirky thatched cottages to marvel at too.

There are certainly plenty of beautiful and wonderful things to see at Winterton-on-Sea, and while COVID-19 may have meant that we couldn’t fully enjoy everything this beautiful seaside town had to offer, TeamCocopup Charlie and I certainly cannot wait to return when things gain a sense of normalcy again. Back to Winterton-on-Sea, a town suspended in time and brimming with character.

A week’s stay for four guests at April Cottage starts from £601 (wintertoncottages.co.uk, 01493 800645). For more information please visit www.great-yarmouth.co.uk.

We often discuss the items we should pack when going on vacation, but what about those that you aren’t allowed to bring on a plane or to an international country? It’s very important for every traveler to make a list of the items they should and shouldn’t carry when traveling – not only because it saves you from unnecessary embarrassment, but it will also protect you from legal issues. If you are a frequent business traveler or simply a tourist who loves to travel to different places, you should be aware of the things that shouldn’t be in your carry on.

However, it’s not just your carryon luggage you need to worry about! You need to double-check your suitcase and other bags to ensure that there’s nothing that will get you into trouble in your own country or internationally. Check our list of the items that every traveler must avoid and be sure to pack your bags accordingly.

3.4 Ounces of Liquids

The large bottle of your shampoos, lotions and other liquids must go into your checkin luggage instead of carryon. These liquid restrictions are strictly followed at all airports – no matter where you are traveling. For those liquid you must have in your carryon, put them in containers no bigger than 100mL and pack them in a transparent plastic bag. Any liquid container above this limit will not be allowed on the plane, even if it is only half full.

Plan your toiletries in advance to get a better idea of the amount of liquid stuff you will need while traveling. Additionally, travel restrictions vary for liquid medicines so it’s best to check the laws of your destination country before packing your medicines. In most countries, passengers must tell the agent that they are carrying liquid medicines, in addition to other liquid items.

Sharp Objects

This doesn’t need explanation. Knives, scissors, nail cutters, and other sharp objects that can be used for self-defense or attacks are absolutely prohibited. As a general rule, you must avoid any sharp object in your carry-on bag and you are planning to bring any sharp objects, you must pack them in your luggage that will go in the hold. Nail cutters are acceptable, as long as that they are no more than four inches long. However, this is the general rule set by the TSA, but the final decision depends on the agents screening your bag at the airport. So, it is better to avoid carry these items altogether.

Although the TSA has approved plastic and round-bladed knives for your carry-on, the rules regarding knives and scissors may vary from country to country. The only exception is glass. Despite being a sharp object, TSA approves glass for carry-ons. So, if you are wondering if it’s safe to bring a pair of reading glasses on a plane, know that there is no rule that restricts taking your glasses on the plane.

Sporting Items

Any sports accessory, including but not limited to:

  • Cricket bat
  • Bows and arrows
  • Golf clubs
  • Hockey sticks
  • Ski poles

Must not be packed in your carry-on bag, as they can be used as the weapon, so be sure to check them in. Alternatively, you can rent these sports items once you have reached the destination.

CBD and Vaping Devices

CBD is associated with strict laws that vary from country to country. The TSA restricts CBD oilsand other cannabis-related products, especially if the THC concentration in the product is above 0.3 percent. Then again, the rules might vary depending on the country you are traveling to.

Therefore, there is a very high chance you will not make it past the security agents without getting caught while carrying CBD products. Your carry-on luggage are checked thoroughly for liquids, weapons, and other prohibited stuff. Note that these restrictions apply not only to your carry-on but also checked luggage. You will get into serious trouble if you are caught with cannabidiol, whether in a vaping pen, edible form, or something else.

Flammable Items

Flammable items are strictly prohibited on planes for obvious reasons. If fireworks are an absolute necessity for you, consider buying them when you arrive at your destination. Similarly, safety matches are not allowed on planes. However, lighters are allowed in your carry-on, but only if they don’t contain lighter fuel. For further information about the restrictions for flammable items for travelers, visit the TSA website.

The luggage restrictions in the USA are different to those in New Zealand and Saudi Arabia, for example. Therefore, it is best to go over the instructions on the official government website of your destination to learn more about the items you must not carry when traveling, to make sure your awesome trip is not marred by issues at the airport.

Staycations are the hot topic right now but finding a hotel in the UK that can transport you to another country, that’s tricky.

Cue the reopening of The Bird, Bath. A quirky hotel that boasts an exciting new outdoor terrace which, a few cocktails in, you won’t be red faced if you mistake it for a night in Ibiza.

We had the pleasure of staying there when the world seemed a little bit more normal and the one night just wasn’t enough. This hotel proudly talks about being a little bit ‘out there’ and that’s the kind of no f*cks given attitude that we’re all about here at House of Coco. This hotel is like your crazy best friend that isn’t afraid to chat up that guy at the bar and is confident enough to wear that sequin dress that hardly covers her thighs. She’s sassy, bold and memorable. She is The Bird hotel personified.

This hotel is perfect for friends, couples, basically anyone that’s up for a hotel experience that has fun at it’s core. Think more Carrie Bradshaw than Samantha though, it’s sophisticated and chic and has a flourish of creative genius throughout. If food is at the heart of your booking decisions then you won’t be disappointed. Honest, seasonal, fresh and local are just a few words to describe the ethos at their restaurant, Plate. The dining experience alone is enough to return to this hotel time and time again especially with their ever changing menu.

Once you’re ready to retire to your room, this is when the magic happens. The rooms range from compact and comfy right up to the rather fabulous hot tub room. Be warned though, some of the doors to the bathrooms are glass so you might have to lean in to your voyeuristic tendencies here but, either way, you won’t be ready to check out when the time comes.

With a hotel lobby that’s an Instagrammers dream and the option to take you four legged best friend, there’s a chance you’ll see us back soon with our Team Coco Pup, armed and dangerous with our party pants ready to make our way through the cocktail menu. Ibiza, you can wait.

If you went to Beverly Hills and you didn’t go to Rodeo Drive then that would be a big mistake, HUGE! Now, if you’re like us you’ve probably watched the iconic Pretty Woman film more times than we’ve maxed out our credit cards, so that reference won’t go completely over your head. Films aside, Rodeo Drive is back.

The Rodeo Drive Committee announced today a surge in business and real estate activity as the famed, luxury retail destination reopens to the world. Following the easing of Covid-19 retail and travel restrictions, increased customer confidence as a result of vaccinations and safety protocols, and in anticipation of a full statewide reopening on June 15 announced by Governor Gavin Newsom, business is surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

Rodeo Drive merchants, among them leading international brands, report double-digit increases in online and in-store sales, figures which are echoed by the Department of Commerce’s March report of a 9.8% increase in retail sales– almost double what analysts expected. “Business has doubled compared to this time last year,” confirmed Rodeo Drive Committee President Nicola Cagliata. “Our boutiques are now open for regular business hours with extended capacity. Windows are refreshed with new collections and our customers are venturing out. They’ve been shopping online for a year and now they feel safe, and they’re spending at record levels. We’re seeing international visitors beginning to return and there’s a real sense of community on the street.”

Demand for luxury goods includes what some hail as a golden era for luxury car sales. Scot Prescott, Owner and Founder of Auto Vault Storage, a luxury automobile management firm on Rodeo Drive, added, “We’re now open seven days a week and we’ve never been busier. We’re seeing our customers from around the world coming back, and they want to get back behind the wheel. For our local customers, cars have been a stress release in challenging times. Everything’s opening up.” According to auto industry research company Technavio, Ferrari, which is leasing a space on Rodeo Drive for the first time, reported a share price jump of 27 percent last year, Lamborghini’s order book is full until October and Porsche, whose Porsche Design boutique is located on Two Rodeo Drive, reported in March that revenue reached an all-time high in 2020.

Mark Tronstein, whose family has owned multiple properties on Rodeo Drive dating back to the 1970s, reports that activity on Rodeo Drive is flourishing. “The exclusive two-and-a-half block stretch continues to draw new tenants and significant capital investment,” said Tronstein. Piaget and Jaeger-LeCoultre, among others, have taken up new residences on the 400 block. Moncler will unveil a new flagship store this fall. Long time residents Cartier, Chanel and Dior, to name a few, are investing heavily in their Rodeo Drive presence. “This level of activity demonstrates a huge vote of confidence not only in the brands but also in the power and longevity of what is considered the most sought-after luxury retail location in the world,” Tronstein added

“Rodeo Drive is the only street in the U.S. that has held up,” said Carine Mamann, Executive Director at Cushman Wakefield, who handles leasing on the street. Despite the pandemic she has brought new brands including Amiri, Onitsuka Tiger and Golden Goose to Rodeo Drive. During the same period, Rodeo Drive saw the $122 million sale of two adjoining landmark retail properties home to the flagship stores of Alexander McQueen and Brioni to a private real estate investment and development firm adding Beverly Hills to its portfolio. Another highly anticipated Rodeo Drive development, LVMH’s Cheval Blanc Beverly Hills hotel, designed by architect Peter Marino, is scheduled to open in 2025. Top Los Angeles real estate broker Houman Mahboubi, who has been a force in the Beverly Hills business triangle commented, “Rodeo Drive is one of the top places in the world to invest. If you’re on Rodeo, you’ve made it, It’s vacancy factor has never been more than 5% – even post pandemic. All the spaces are filling up and there’s a continuous demand for new brands to enter this market. It is a force of influence in the retail world.”

Renowned the world over, a trip to Rodeo Drive includes shopping for everything you might wish for, and more, from rooftop outdoor “glamping” and pop up dining at The Beverly Wilshire, to sampling the fine fare of Michelin-starred chef Massimo Bottura at Gucci Osteria. “Beverly Hills is thriving. As our hotels and restaurants safely return, providing world-class service, and the great fashion and luxury boutiques on Rodeo Drive open their doors, we welcome our residents and international visitors back to enjoy a new, much needed and iconic experience that only this great City can offer,” said Beverly Hills Mayor Robert Wunderlich. As the street reopens for business, the Rodeo Drive Committee and the City of Beverly Hills remain committed, transparent and emphatic about prioritizing customer and employee safety.

“Besides the blue sky, the sunshine and the palm trees, I think we have a lot of reasons to smile on Rodeo Drive right now with respect to the boom on the street,“ added Kathy Gohari, President-elect of the Rodeo Drive Committee. “We’ve got through a challenging year together,” added Cagliata, “…and now’s the perfect time to come back.”

In celebration of the street’s reopening, Rodeo Drive-The Podcast is releasing fifteen weeks of reruns and original programming on Apple Podcasts and wherever you listen to your podcasts. This week, hear why window shopping is an art form for everyone to enjoy In the episode Noseprints Against The Glass: Windows By Simon Doonan and LVMH’s Faye McLeod and Ansel Thompson. These legendary window designers talk about the three-second rule, designing during the pandemic, and what it takes to create boutique windows that astonish passersby– from rats in tuxedos to collaborations with world-renowned visionaries Virgil Abloh, Frank Gehry, and Yayoi Kusama. Established to keep audiences around the world connected to the famed shopping street, the podcast, now in its second season, is listened to in 78 countries.

If you have fond memories of vacations that you took with your parents when you were a child, you know that, for kids, going on a trip with mom and dad can be a peak experience that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives. There is no reason to postpone that great tropical excursion until your children are older – you can travel to Jamaica with your kids right now.

Having a great vacation always requires careful planning, but that’s especially true when you travel with kids because children have a way of making sure that things never happen quite the way you expect. Luck favours the prepared, though, so in this article, we’re going to discuss the things that you can do to ensure that you’re prepared for anything when you plan a tour to Jamaica with kids.

Get Ready for the Flight

The first thing you need to know about traveling with kids is that things will always take longer than you expect. If you’re a seasoned traveler, you’ve probably gotten used to showing up at the airport shortly before takeoff and buzzing through the check-in process in a few minutes flat. That’s not going to happen when you travel with kids, so make sure that you arrive at the airport well before your flight is scheduled to leave.

When you pack your luggage, you’ll naturally be tempted to bring just about everything that you could conceivably need in every possible situation. It’s much wiser, though, to avoid overpacking and only bring the essentials. Overpacking makes it very difficult to get around – and by the end of the day, there’s a good chance that you’ll be carrying a child as well.

  • Bring any essential medications along with something for motion sickness. Chewing gum can be handy for helping kids equalize their ear pressure.
  • Bring one or two familiar items from home. A favorite stuffed animal or nightlight can help a child who might have difficulty sleeping in an unfamiliar bed.
  • Bring a change of clothes for everyone in case there’s an accident or your checked baggage is lost or delayed.
  • Bring plenty of snacks. Your kids are going to get hungry throughout your trip, and food may not always be readily available. You don’t want to be out late at night hunting for food in an unfamiliar location when almost everything is closed for the day. Conveniently, filling your bags with snacks will also leave plenty of room for the souvenirs that you’ll accumulate during the trip.
  • Bring a few books or games to keep the kids busy during the flight and throughout the trip.

Make sure that you have an easy dinner planned for the first night. Your kids are going to be tired, and they won’t want to get ready for a nice dinner at a fancy restaurant. Having something delivered is probably the best option, so make sure that you know what’s going to be available.

Choose Kid-Friendly Accommodations

As with every other travel destination, some accommodations in Jamaica are more appropriate for children than others. Making the decision to rent a Jamaica villa might be your best option. Coconut Cottage, for example, offers a huge selection of kid-friendly activities such as a private heated swimming pool, lawn games, board games, a video game console, and more. A stay at the villa also includes a membership to Round Hill Resort, which offers plenty of supervised activities for children and can make it possible for you to get away with your spouse for a little while.

Leave Plenty of Room in Your Schedule

One of the most important things that you can do before your trip is sit down as a family to discuss your plans and expectations for the vacation. Talk about the things that you’ll be doing while you’re in Jamaica and gather feedback from your children about what sounds fun to them. Setting everyone’s expectations is a great way to help ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible during the trip.

It’s a good idea, though, to avoid scheduling things too tightly. Don’t plan too many activities for any single day – and don’t forget to schedule downtime between activities. Nothing is very much fun when your kids are tired and cranky. Giving them plenty of time to relax will help to ensure that your planned activities are as fun as they can be.

Choose Kid-Friendly Activities

Traveling to Jamaica with your kids can be incredibly rewarding – both for you and for your children. The trip will leave all of you with memories that will last throughout your lifetime, and you want to make the most of your vacation by seeing everything that you possibly can while you’re there.

One important thing to keep in mind when you’re choosing your activities, though, is that your children may not have the same endurance or attention span as you. Activities that involve remaining on your feet – or remaining silent – for hours may not be appropriate for children, so you may not want to schedule an all-day mountain hike or buy tickets to the opera. If you ensure that your expectations are reasonable, you should have no trouble finding activities that the whole family will enjoy.

Make Safety Your Biggest Priority

The final thing to keep in mind when you travel to Jamaica with your kids is that safety should be your highest priority at all times. If your child has an independent streak, he may wander off to go and look at something interesting when no one is paying close attention. Nothing can compare to the panic that you’ll experience if you look around and aren’t sure where your child is, so you need to make sure that there’s no chance of that happening. You or your spouse may experience moments in which you’re temporarily distracted negotiating a purchase, making reservations, ordering tickets or hailing a cab. While one of you does that, the other parent needs to watch the kids. Make sure that your children are never out of your sight.

1. The English Channel towards Brighton

Brighton is one of the most popular day trip destinations from London as it only takes an hour along the A2. There is the option to pass through Dover where you can take in the famous cliffs and the longer drive down the A259 will offer scenic views of the Sussex Coastline and Hastings Castle. Once in Brighton, visit The Royal Pavilion, grab yourself some fish and chips and head to the beach, followed by the retro funfair. For those looking for an alternative experience, Brighton offers a number of art galleries such as Artrepublic for street art lovers, designer and vintage shops and restaurants such as Riddle & Fins Oyster Bar, terre a terre for Vegetarians or Choccywoccydoodah for chocolate lovers.

2. The Snake Pass, Yorkshire

Located on the A57 in the Derbyshire section of the Peak District, between Manchester and Sheffield and 1,680 feet above sea level, makes this scenic mountain pass a popular road trip destination. The Snake Pass refers to the winding route between Glossop and Ladybower with superb views of the Ladybower reservoir, its vast woodlands and the rolling countryside. Head into the Derbyshire Dales and then finally onto the A623 into Chatsworth for the magnificent Chatsworth House where you can explore its 500 years of history.

3. Cheddar Gorge, Somerset

Cheddar Gorge, home to the famous British cheese is located in the West Country and hosts an impressive sight of cliffs and rock formations along your drive on the B3135. The spectacular natural landmark draws many tourists in peak season, however it will never resemble rush hour in a city and the magnificent view of the awe-inspiring cliffs will keep you distracted. Visit the caves for its history lesson on Britain’s prehistoric ancestors or take part in rock climbing, followed by sampling the delicious cheese.

4. Black Mountain pass

The 20-mile Black Mountain Pass has been described as the perfect antidote to escaping desk life. Located in Wales, 3 hours from the South East or the Midlands on the A4069 cutting across the Brecon Beacons, through Brynamman where it peaks 1,600ft before its drop into Llandovery. This deserted land which was used as a quarry for limestone is now only inhabited by the occasional animal passing though so you will feel isolated. The spectacular driving route will pass rivers, mountains, bridges, stone walls and hedges. Visit the Brecon Beacons National Park or nearby village Myddfai to learn about the legend of Lady of The Lake. This picturesque village has a number of traditional pubs for lunch from local farmers and suppliers.

5. Glencoe, Scotland

Glencoe is majestic Scotland at its finest, featuring a dramatic backdrop of magnificent mountain views, greenery and icy lochs. A tranquil space to relax and unwind

Guest rooms will be finished in a contemporary, refined and thoughtful design to offer the ultimate haven of relaxation, with the interior design reflecting the rich history and culture of the East End’s historic textile industry, and guests will receive a welcome gift on arrival inspired by the City of London to make them feel truly at home. Local dining delights

Canopy by Hilton London City will feature three locally inspired food and beverage venues – ideal for guests and locals alike:

Freedom Café

Named after the Freedom Press Publishing House in nearby Whitechapel High Street, Freedom Café will offer the perfect place to relax, work and socialise at the heart of the hotel’s Canopy Central area – the hub of the hotel, where all the communal spaces come together. From café to reception and the retreat, each zone flows naturally into the next creating a vibrant, welcoming, and adaptable space synonymous with the Canopy brand. Guests will be able to enjoy craft coffee roasted in the neighbourhood, as well as unique cocktails, craft beers and wines that offer a taste of the latest local offering every evening. The industrial letterpress style of the Freedom Press inspires everything from the menus and coffee cups to the uniforms and décor.

Penny Squares

The hotel’s speciality restaurant will serve artisan breakfast and East End inspired dishes made with local, sustainable ingredients. Influenced by its name, a quilting technique popular in the textile industry, the restaurant incorporates design elements such as a sculptural art hanging made with various textiles and yard and flooring created entirely from pennies.

Florattica

A must-visit for locals and travellers alike, the hotel’s stunning rooftop bar offers dazzling views of London’s eclectic East End and some of the city’s most inspiring architectural views, providing intimate social zones and private spaces for those looking to enjoy a tipple away from the city crowds. Florattica is an urban rendezvous inspired by the creative floral patterns the Huguenot silk weavers mastered in the area in the Georgian era. Boasting floor-to-ceiling flower power and vitality, it’s a place for the city curious longing to escape the East End’s concrete jungle.

Premium artisan breakfast, weekend tapas brunch and small plates will be served to guests here, alongside the trendiest local drinks. Private VIP booth seating will be available to book both inside and on the outside terrace in autumn.

Private dining bathed in natural light at Dunstans Den

Taking influence from the hidden pockets of green space in East London, the hotel’s adaptable multi-purpose private dining space is perfect for exclusive VIP events and intimate dining in the city.

The private dining space sits within a conservatory design offering tons of natural light, and features floral installations draped across the ceilings. The open-plan area features a long dining table made of timber wood. High-speed internet and the latest meeting technology equipment will be made available within the space.

Guests can also step out to a refined break out area that offers refreshments, a bean-to-cup coffee machine and filtered water throughout the day.
