To be successful in sticking to our New Year’s resolutions, you must be both realistic and practical. For example, if you want to cut down your alcohol intake because you normally have a drink every day, then don’t resolve to go teetotal right away. Instead, try at first to only drink alcohol every second day, and continue to gradually cut back your consumption more and more until you are happy with the amount you are having. The same goes for becoming vegan or vegetarian, exercising and trying to eat more healthily. Try not to throw yourself in too deep, as you will most likely just put yourself off completely.
Have A Solid Plan
Having a good plan goes hand in hand with being realistic about your New Year’s resolution. If you want to get fit, then think practically about how you are going to do so. Maybe for the firsttwo weeks you aim to walk a mile each day. The second two weeks you could aim to run half the mile but then walk the rest. The third two weeks you could aim to run the entire mile. Having a plan, that is broken down into manageable chunks, will help you to take gradual steps towards achieving your overall goal.
Write Your Resolutions Down on Paper
Writing your goals down on paper can make you feel more accountable if you give up on them. Keep the piece of paper somewhere in sight, so you have a constant reminder of your goals and aspirations for the coming year. Sticking post-it notes around your home, on bathroom mirrors and above door handles is another great way of setting yourself inescapable prompts.
Tell A Friend
If a piece of paper isn’t going to make you feel accountable enough, then tell a close friend or family member about your New Year’s resolution, and about how you plan on realistically achieving it. Having a somebody to hold you accountable should help to further motivate you and prevent you from giving up at any point in your journey. Send your friend or family member a text or an email whenever you come closer to achieving your goal, to let them know how you are getting on.
