Reflecting on your 35-year career in the tourism industry, what pivotal moment or experience inspired you to transition from your role as Sales & Marketing Manager to starting your own independent home-based travel business?

The idea of starting my own business had been brewing for a while, especially after the events of the 2020-2021 pandemic when I was managing my duties from home. The push grew stronger as I approached the 20-year service milestone at my previous workplace, and I knew it was time to take the leap and go it alone.

Having been born in the UK of Greek-Cypriot descent and living in Cyprus for 40 years, how has your dual cultural background influenced the way you curate travel experiences, particularly for destinations in Cyprus and Greece?

I’ve had a very British upbringing, but the Greek culture has always been a part of my life. Moving to Cyprus in my teens was challenging, but over the years, I learned to appreciate and value my roots. The authentic Cyprus and Greece, with their warm people, hospitality, and generosity, make these destinations special. My goal is to guide travelers into the heart of these places, ensuring they experience the true essence of the culture.

Reaching a 20-year milestone at the award-winning Aphrodite Hills Resort is a remarkable achievement. Can you share a specific project or accomplishment during your tenure that you are particularly proud of and that shaped your approach to luxury, tailor-made travel experiences?

Joining Aphrodite Hills Resort during its pre-opening stages and witnessing its growth into an award-winning destination was a defining moment. Creating exclusive, bespoke experiences was ingrained in the culture, and a highlight was hosting the Informal Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs in 2012. Coordinating a high-profile event and showcasing Cyprus for such an occasion highlighted the importance of seamless, exceptional experiences.

You’ve mentioned a special connection to Scotland. How has this connection played a role in your travel experiences and, possibly, in how you approach crafting unique itineraries for your clients?

My connection to Scotland, through my daughter Natassa, who lives and works in Glasgow, is significant. She is not only my biggest fan but also my travel buddy. Our joint travels inspire itineraries that cater to both the “mum & daughter” experience, ensuring unique and enjoyable moments. This personal connection enriches my understanding of what makes a trip special for families and influences how I craft tailor-made experiences.

Being the Account Manager for Travel Counsellors worldwide for 9 years must have provided unique insights. What key lessons or perspectives did you gain during this time that you believe set you apart in the travel advisory industry?

Working as a supplier partner to Travel Counsellors taught me the importance of building and strengthening relationships. With around 1300 agents worldwide, I made an effort to be present, available, and build connections with each one. This emphasis on relationships, whether with customers, teams, or supplier partners, has become a cornerstone of my approach to delivering personalised service.

With your extensive travel history within Europe, the Middle East, and beyond, can you share a travel destination that surprised you the most, and how did it influence your perspective on travel?

Dubai was a destination that surprised me the most. Initially thinking it to be superficial, I discovered its depth and the astonishing achievements in the last decades. It showcased the transformative power of visionary planning, putting a once unknown destination on the map for world-class leisure and business travel.

This experience influenced my perspective on the potential of destinations with forward-thinking strategies.

The tagline “with us it’s personal” is powerful. How do you infuse a personal touch into your travel advisory services, ensuring that each client’s experience is truly unique and tailored to their preferences?

The “with us it’s personal” motto is embedded in our community’s everyday lives. I follow a 6-step journey, from arranging personal calls to discussing holiday plans to checking in post-travel. This ensures a personal touch at every stage, from understanding preferences to crafting tailor-made options. It’s about being there for the customer, 24/7, and ensuring their journey is seamless and exceptional.

It doesn’t get any more personal than this!

Starting your own independent travel business is an exciting venture. What aspect of being an entrepreneur in the travel industry has brought you the most joy and fulfillment?

Starting my own venture has been fulfilling, especially the freedom to work on my terms and be my own boss. While I loved my previous roles, the ability to determine how I market, spend, and invest my time brings immense satisfaction. Doing things my way allows me to tailor services based on years of industry experience.

In your role as a Travel Counsellor, you have access to thousands of suppliers and cutting-edge technology. Can you share a specific instance where this technology played a crucial role in creating a seamless and extraordinary travel experience for a client?

Our cutting-edge tools enable us to build unique itineraries, and one notable instance was curating a honeymoon trip to Crete. Despite pre-modeled options available online, the clients desired a bespoke experience. Our technology allowed us to create a personalized itinerary, exceeding their expectations and adding a touch of magic to their journey.

As someone deeply familiar with the Mediterranean region, what hidden gems or off-the-beaten-path locations in Cyprus or Greece do you recommend for travelers seeking authentic and unique experiences?

For authentic experiences, I recommend exploring hidden villages, wine routes, and vineyard experiences in Cyprus. In Greece, a road trip through lesser-known destinations like Trikala, Kalambaka, and Igoumenitsa provides unique and off-the-beaten-path experiences. Discovering local culture, monasteries, and indigenous flora and fauna ensures an immersive journey.

Your commitment to customer care is evident. How do you ensure that the travel experiences you curate not only meet but exceed your clients’ expectations, leaving them with lasting memories?

Exceeding expectations involves going the extra mile, taking care of every detail, and ensuring a seamless journey. From arranging personal calls to post-travel check-ins, my focus is on meticulous planning, continuous communication, and addressing details before guests arrive. It’s about providing peace of mind, allowing clients to relax and savor every moment of their journey.

Working from home provides flexibility. Can you share an anecdote about a time when your ability to accommodate clients’ schedules, regardless of time zones, resulted in a particularly positive and memorable interaction?

Working in Cyprus with a time zone advantage, I utilize the early hours for preparation, ensuring everything is in place before communicating with clients in the UK. This approach allows me to be available 24/7 without disrupting clients’ schedules. During calls, I refrain from mentioning the time difference, ensuring a seamless and positive interaction without letting the two-hour gap dictate my services.

With your background in Guest Services, Reservations, Executive Assistant, Marketing, Communications, and Sales, how have these diverse roles shaped your approach to creating comprehensive and well-rounded travel experiences for your clients?

My diverse roles in the hotel industry, from selling and marketing to executive team responsibilities, shaped my perception of the customer’s journey. Experiencing each stage, from pre-arrival planning to in-resort satisfaction, emphasized the importance of fine-tuning details. This background guides my approach, ensuring comprehensive and well-rounded travel experiences for clients.

Having traveled for both leisure and business, can you recall a specific travel moment that left a lasting impact on you and made you appreciate the transformative power of travel?

The events of 2020 highlighted the vulnerability of the travel industry, but it also showcased the importance of having a trusted travel agent. While facing global challenges, the ability to provide financial protection and flexibility became paramount. Through Travel Counsellors, clients experienced the assurance of 100% financial protection, fostering trust and confidence in our services. Whether it’s a global crisis or routine travel, this commitment contributes to building a strong foundation of trust.

With your extensive travel history within Europe, the Middle East, and beyond, can you share a travel destination that surprised you the most and how did it influence your perspective on travel?

Dubai was a destination that surprised me the most. Initially thinking it to be superficial, I discovered its depth and the astonishing achievements in the last decades. It showcased the transformative power of visionary planning, putting a once unknown destination on the map for world-class leisure and business travel. This experience influenced my perspective on the potential of destinations with forward-thinking strategies.

You’ve mentioned offering holiday itineraries for various purposes, from family holidays to corporate groups. Can you share a unique and challenging request you successfully fulfilled, showcasing your ability to tailor experiences for diverse clientele?

Although all our itineraries are built on uniqueness and based on our customers’ travel aspirations, a particularly challenging request involved organizing an Indian Wedding Group in Cyprus. This extravagant affair spanned three full days with numerous ceremonies, rituals, and events, attended by family members from across the globe.

Coordinating logistics, including accommodation, transfers, catering, and inter-departmental coordination, was an enormous feat. The ultimate gratitude and thanks from the bride, groom, parents, and guests validated the accomplishment, despite the worries and anxieties along the way.

In your opinion, what trends or shifts do you foresee in the travel industry, and how are you adapting your services to meet the evolving needs and preferences of modern travelers?

Undoubtedly, everyone needs something to look forward to, especially at the beginning of a new year. Travel is often the most exciting prospect, and as the industry rebounds, we observe shifts in trends and preferences. Modern consumers are seeking more from their travel experiences, desiring frequent getaways when financially feasible.

Our Travel Tracker Report in October 2023, derived from a sample of the general public, indicated that 45% prioritized holidays as their top spending for the upcoming year. Additionally, a trend toward long-haul destinations such as the USA, Canada, Australia, and the Far East, as well as traditional European hotspots like Italy and Greece, is evident. Multi-center and multi-type holidays, combining different destinations or vacation styles in one trip, are gaining popularity.

At Travel Counsellors, we consistently study trends, follow demands, and specialize in crafting tailored itineraries. Responsible travel is a top priority, and for 2024, we’ve expanded our sustainable travel options, partnering with providers to help customers reduce their carbon footprint, support communities, and protect ecosystems.

As someone with a deep connection to Cyprus, what cultural or local elements do you ensure are incorporated into the travel experiences you curate, providing an authentic sense of the destination to your clients?

Immersing travelers in the heart of Cyprus is key to offering an authentic experience beyond the typical Sun, Sand, and Sea promotions. Cyprus, a four-season island with diverse offerings, boasts a rich history influenced by various conquerors. In curating travel experiences, I emphasize hidden gems like authentic villages, wine routes, nature paths, sporting opportunities, and historical/cultural routes. Encountering locals producing traditional goods ensures visitors experience the genuine and authentic side of Cyprus.

Looking ahead, what aspirations and goals do you have for Travel Perfect by Maria, and how do you envision continuing to make a positive impact in the travel industry?

In 2024, my goal is to establish Travel Perfect by Maria, gradually growing the business through referrals and word-of-mouth. My commitment is to prioritize customer peace of mind and satisfaction. Leveraging my extensive travel experience, I aim to be there for customers every step of their journey, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable holiday experience.

Within the year, I plan to incorporate business travel as an additional offering, utilizing our Sustainable travel portfolio to positively impact the industry. Learning about new destinations, staying updated on travel trends, and gathering feedback from customers and colleagues are focal points for 2024, enhancing knowledge and service delivery.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Africa, specifically going on safari in locations like Tanzania and Kenya, is at the top of my bucket list. It’s a dream to embark on a 10+ day journey from Nairobi to the Serengeti, camping in different locations along the way. The experience promises not only adventure but also an opportunity for my husband and me to enjoy the beauty of these locations.

When lacking motivation, what’s your go-to quote?

My go-to quote, inspired by my kids, is “So Worthy of Your Dreams.” Over the years, as a mom and cheerleader for everyone else, I often forgot to remind myself of the same. Now is the time to tell myself that I am also “Worthy of My Dreams.” This will be my mantra moving forward, empowering myself to pursue my aspirations.
