With its vintage style vibes, eating out at The Station Kitchen in the pretty town of West Bay in Dorset provides an out-of-this-world dining experience.

Entirely unique, the restaurant is housed in a quirky and vintage train carriage on the edge of an old train station close to the expansive West Bay beach.

Widely considered to be one of the best restaurants in Dorset, we were excited to try the food and enjoy the dining experience of eating in a dining carriage that was over 100 years old having been built in 1911 – the same year as the Titanic.

There’s a real sense of storied history here, the train was used as a makeshift medical carriage during the first World War where it was used to transport injured soldiers back from France.

The interiors are delightful with vintage-inspired decor, colourful sofas, and old photos showing the train in all its former glory. Of course, there are also accessories paying homage to its historical roots too including a cute brass ‘tickets please’ sign!

Cocktail fans will love the fantastic selection of carefully-crafted cocktails to teem with the delicious food. The Southwest Bumble with a refreshing blend of gin, raspberry syrup, lemon and soda is a delight, but there’s also a super wine list including tipples from local providers too.

With a jam-packed menu serving incredible dishes with locally-sourced ingredients, The Station Kitchen has become not just a stellar local favourite, but an eatery that attracts tourists and foodies alike.

We went on a Sunday where only the roast dinner was served, but you can enjoy a great selection of options throughout the week such as seafood, burgers, steak and more.

We started our meal with some of the most delicious scallops I have ever tried, juicy, firm and succulent, they were paired with a pea & mint puree and prosciutto crisps served with a hazelnut butter.

This was followed by one of the best ever roast dinners I have had the pleasure of eating. Roast dinners tend to fall off the mark for me, but this one was exceptional.

A generous portion of the quirkily-named ‘Fat Controller’ which included corn-fed roast chicken, Jurassic roast beef and pork with all the trimmings.

As a coeliac, I normally find that a roast dinner served gluten free results in a partial plate of a regular roast dinner, with things like the yorkshire pudding, stuffing etc removed.

This was not the case whatsoever at the Station Kitchen – I had a full plate teeming with thoughtful touches such as a gluten free Yorkshire pudding which was much appreciated.

Other dietary requirements are fully catered for and there are also lots of vegan and vegetarian options too.

We were far too full to enjoy a pudding, but there was an attractive selection on offer to choose from.

The Station Kitchen has it all, exemplary service, stunning decor (make sure you check out the flamingo-infused bathroom) and above all extraordinary food that should not be missed.

If you are planning a visit to Dorset, be sure to book a table and experience it for yourself. If you are not planning a visit, come anyway – the food and dining experience is 100% worth it!
