An aviation inspection is, in essence, quite an elaborate and critical process. After all, here, in this case, the inspector will check if a jet is eligible to fly or not.

Thus, it’s important for anyone to know a little bit about it. And yes, what I will be discussing in this article is applicable for both a public jet or a private flight.

So, let’s get started with it.

Things to Know about Aviation Inspection

Usually, when talking about a public jet, the inspection process is done by the owner of the jet or the government. However, if you are thinking about renting private jets, I’ll request you to conduct the investigation with an educated inspector.

It will assist you in understanding if boarding in the said flight is safe for you or not.

1: The Requirement of Registering and Re-Registering.

If you have bought a private jet, you have to register it immediately. However that’s not where your responsibilities end, though. Apart from that, you have to pay an USD 5.00 fee to get the flight re-registered. During this process, the aviation committee will take a look at your flight, and check if it’s capable of flying properly or not. Hence, if you are thinking about choosing a private flight, make sure to ask for their re-registration paper at the beginning.

2: Three Different Types of Inspection.

When it comes to inspection, a flight generally goes through three different phases. These are all quite different and, therefore, can offer unique results.

Here’s what you need to know about them –

  • A pre-purchase inspection is done prior to buying an aircraft. With it, you’ll be able to understand if the flight is safe enough for you to purchase or not. It must be done by a person who is a certified flight technician.
  • The annual inspection, as the name implies, is generally done once in every 12 months or so. It is conducted by an IA or Inspection Authorization. If the pilot wishes to move the flight from one airport to another, a special permit will be required for that.
  • The 100-hour inspection is usually done when a flight has already traveled for 100 hrs or more. It focuses on testing the current flying capability of the jet and ensuring that it is capable of traveling even more. It may not be required before a flight instruction.

No matter what you are buying or traveling with, make sure to check if all these three tests are done or not. Additionally, we’ll also ask you to check if the jet has gone through progressive inspections or not. These are done in more frequent intervals to keep the flight in use.

3: Special Equipment Inspection.

Like the flight, you will have to ensure that the jet’s special equipment is being inspected too or not. Here are three options that are mostly checked during this process.

  • Transponder, a device for receiving radio signals, should be inspected once every two years if it’s going to be used in a flight.
  • An altimeter is a type of attachment that’s mostly used to determine the altitude of the plane while flying. It should be done once every 24 months too.
  • The emergency locator transmitter is about offering the location where you’re flying. It should be checked once every twelve months to consider its feasibility.

Each of these devices are quite important for a flight. Hence, it’s a must that you are checking them during the time period mentioned previously. And, if you are a traveler, make sure to ask for the paper that documents when the aircraft was checked previously.

The Bottom Line

The technicalities of an airplane can seem quite complex at the beginning. However, if you’re researching them extensively, you’ll know what to look at and when.

In any case, before you’re boarding a private jet, we’ll ask you to follow through the docs and certificates. After all, it’s all about your security and you should be aware of everything prior.

Anyway, that will be all for this article.
