In the realm of fashion, where trends often overshadow authenticity, there exists a beacon of conscious creativity and genuine expression—Claire Pinckney, the visionary founder behind Rocking Gypsy.

With a heart attuned to the universe’s rhythms and a spirit ablaze with a love for the ocean, moon, and stars, Claire embarked on a transformative journey.

In this exclusive interview, she graciously unveils the soulful narrative behind Rocking Gypsy, a brand that dares to defy conventions and epitomizes the fusion of Southern California’s free-spirited essence and London’s edgy charm.

Claire’s words resonate with a profound passion for empowering others and spreading love, joy, and kindness through fashion. Join us as we delve into the inspiring tale of Rocking Gypsy’s inception, where fashion becomes a canvas for self-expression, sustainability transcends mere ideology, and every stitch is woven with purpose.

Prepare to be captivated by Claire’s vision, where clothing becomes a conduit for embracing individuality, and style becomes a celebration of the beautiful, the meaningful, and the authentic…

What inspired you to create Rocking Gypsy, and how did your passion for the ocean, moon, and stars shape the brand’s identity?

During my trip to Tulum, Mexico in 2017, I struggled to find beautiful, affordable, and sustainable beachwear. Recognizing the gap in the market, the idea for Rocking Gypsy was born. Crafting a business plan and vision, the concept crystallized in early 2022 when I connected with Monica and Manish of April Sourcing, India, RG’s co-founders.

As someone deeply connected to the universe and the ocean, merging our passion for fashion with the cosmic elements of the moon and stars felt natural. We even consulted an astrologer, casting a horary chart to determine the perfect time for our launch. According to the cosmos, the Spring Equinox of 2023 aligned perfectly with our vision, symbolizing a time of rebirth and renewal for Mother Earth.

Following the universe’s guidance, we revealed Rocking Gypsy to the world on this auspicious day.

Can you share a specific moment or experience that motivated you to spread love, joy, and kindness through fashion?

Having worked in fashion for years, I witnessed its loss of soul, becoming solely profit-driven. I wanted to infuse meaning back into fashion, making it more than just material possessions. Fashion, for me, is personal and tied to emotions.

Feeling joyful and confident inspires kindness and positivity. In a world craving more Joy, Love, and Kindness, I felt compelled to create designs that inspire these emotions.

Rocking Gypsy embraces a blend of Southern California’s free-spirited essence and London’s edge. How do these diverse influences manifest in your designs?

Living in Los Angeles as a Londoner, merging these identities in our designs felt natural. Our silhouettes reflect a So-Cal bohemian vibe with free-flowing, loose-fitting styles. We infuse a touch of London Grit through details like metal studs, beads, chains, and raw edges, creating a harmonious blend of both worlds.

Sustainability is a core value for Rocking Gypsy. How do you ensure that your limited runs and small batch production contribute positively to the fashion industry and the environment?

Our partnerships in India ensure ethical sourcing and eco-friendly production. We prioritise meaning over mass production, designing timeless pieces that transcend trends. By producing in small batches and producing to order, we limit our carbon footprint, avoiding excess stock that contributes to fashion waste.

The use of natural fabrics and unique dye effects is a distinctive feature of your brand. How do these choices align with your vision for environmentally conscious fashion?

We primarily use natural fibers like cotton and silk, complemented by non-toxic, AZO dye-free, and phthalate-free dye processes. Each garment is dyed by hand, ensuring uniqueness while minimizing environmental impact.

Artisanal embroideries and beading techniques are evident in your designs. Can you tell us about the creative process behind incorporating these intricate details into your garments?

We draw inspiration from heritage techniques, incorporating them to add a unique touch and preserve these artisanal crafts. Whether inspired by a vintage garment or a random detail, these elements enrich our designs, making each piece one-of-a-kind.

Rocking Gypsy encourages people to “Follow your Rebel Heart” and “Love your Bohemian Spirit.” How do these philosophies reflect the mindset you hope to inspire in your customers?

“Follow your Rebel Heart” encourages embracing individuality and freedom, while “Love your Bohemian Spirit” celebrates carefree, artistic vibes. We want our customers to feel empowered, expressing their uniqueness unapologetically and embracing their inner goddess.

Embracing a global soul is a beautiful concept. How does Rocking Gypsy celebrate cultural diversity and inclusivity in its designs and messaging?

We celebrate diversity by featuring real people of various backgrounds, sizes, and colors in our campaigns. Our designs blend colors, patterns, and textures inspired by global traditions, allowing wearers to connect with their global soul. We believe in beauty defined by kindness and authenticity, not skin colour or size.

Fashion often serves as a medium for self-expression. How do you believe Rocking Gypsy empowers individuals to express their unique identities through your clothing?

At Rocking Gypsy, we view fashion as an extension of one’s personality, not a one-size-fits-all concept. Our designs embody rebellion and free spirit, allowing customers to express their individuality confidently. Wearing Rocking Gypsy isn’t just about clothing; it’s about embodying a mindset, feeling like the rockstars they are.

Giving back is an integral part of Rocking Gypsy’s mission. Can you share some of the initiatives or charities the brand supports and the impact they have had?

Currently, we are actively seeking charitable partners who align with our ethos, focusing on mental health and environmental causes. We aim to support these initiatives and make a positive difference. If you’re a charity working in these areas, please reach out; we’re ready to collaborate!

In a world dominated by fast fashion, how do you think Rocking Gypsy contributes to changing people’s perspectives about the value of slow, thoughtful fashion choices?

Rocking Gypsy stands against trends, emphasizing quality over quantity. We encourage curating a collection that reflects one’s story, rather than accumulating disposable items. Fashion should be a love affair, not a fleeting moment. We aim to shift perspectives, urging people to invest in pieces that stand the test of time.

What advice would you give to aspiring designers who aim to create a fashion brand with a strong social and environmental conscience, based on your own journey with Rocking Gypsy?

Building a socially and environmentally conscious brand is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay true to your convictions, challenge norms, and innovate for a sustainable future. Every decision matters; let your brand be a beacon of hope. Stay committed, stay creative, and let your brand inspire positive change.

The creative process is often deeply personal. Can you share a challenging moment you faced during the creation of Rocking Gypsy and how you overcame it?

One significant challenge was a shipment delay during our launch. Despite the setback, we decided to be transparent with our customers, announcing the delay but still allowing orders. It was nerve-wracking, but honesty prevailed, and we overcame the challenge.

Fashion has the power to influence culture and society. How do you envision Rocking Gypsy shaping the future of the fashion industry and inspiring positive change?

Our mission is to inspire a mindset shift, encouraging authenticity, sustainability, and individuality. We aim to influence not just our customers but the entire industry, paving the way for a conscious and compassionate fashion future.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Bali is our dream destination! We’re planning a campaign there for 2024, and we can’t wait to explore its beauty and capture it in our designs.

Lastly, what message or feeling do you hope customers experience when they wear Rocking Gypsy, and how do you want your brand to be remembered in the hearts of those who wear your creations?

We want our customers to feel empowered, wandering in beauty with grace, embracing their authentic selves. Each Rocking Gypsy design carries love and positivity, leaving wearers with a sense of joy. If our brand becomes a part of even one beautiful moment in their lives, spreading love, joy, and kindness, we’ve fulfilled our mission.

As we bid farewell to this illuminating conversation with Claire Pinckney, the heart and soul behind Rocking Gypsy, we are left inspired, reminded that fashion is not merely fabric and threads but a powerful medium for self-discovery and collective positivity.

In the enchanting realm of Augustine Jewels, where elegance meets innovation, creativity and craftsmanship entwine harmoniously, giving birth to exquisite pieces of wearable art.

At the helm of this artistic venture stands Alexandra Morris Robson, a trailblazing jewelry designer whose remarkable journey from the hallowed halls of Cambridge University to the intricate world of diamonds and gemstones is as inspiring as the masterpieces she meticulously crafts.

Alexandra’s journey from the corridors of academia to the vibrant landscape of jewelry design serves as a testament to the power of passion and persistence. It showcases the transformative impact of following one’s heart and embracing the pursuit of artistic excellence.

In the realm of Augustine Jewels, every piece tells a story—a story of resilience, creativity, and the unwavering dedication of a visionary designer whose artistry knows no bounds. Delve deeper in to this story here…

What inspired you to establish Augustine Jewels, and how did your journey begin in the world of jewellery design?

I attended Esmod School of Fashion and Design in Paris in my gap year, winning a Luxury Jewellery design award. However life overtook and I went to Cambridge University and became a management consultant with Accenture. It was when I was at home with the children, that I went back and retrained in diamond grading and coloured stones and went back to my first passion of jewellery design.

Augustine Jewels is known for its commitment to sustainability. Can you tell us more about the company’s approach to ethical practices and how it has influenced your creative process?

At our core, we are committed to sourcing materials ethically. We believe in respecting human rights and safeguarding the environment throughout our supply chain.

That’s why we collaborate closely with trusted suppliers who share our values and uphold responsible mining practices, while championing fair working conditions. Augustine Jewels also adopts the Kimberley Process, which means all our diamonds are sourced from conflict free areas.

The brand is celebrated for its bespoke jewellery designs. Could you share with us an extraordinary customisation experience that stands out in your memory?

One of my favourite pieces that we completed recently was a wonderful royal blue sapphire that we sourced. It was the most beautiful pear shaped stone. We set it with half moon diamonds on a platinum and diamond band. It was the most sparkly wonderful piece.

Augustine Jewels embraces a diverse range of gemstones and precious metals. What’s your favourite gemstone to work with, and why?

It has to be Morganite! I really love the pink hues of this stone and it’s one of my favourite gemstones to use in bespoke designs. I’m also a huge fan of Aquamarines, there’s nothing quite like calming yourself by looking at the pale blue of a gorgeous aquamarine.

Your designs often evoke a sense of timeless elegance. How do you strike a balance between traditional aesthetics and modern trends in your creations?

All of our ready to wear collections are inspired by luxury destinations and so I soak up the colours and sensations in each place. The inspiration from these places allows our jewellery to be modern and yet as you say timeless as well.

With such a remarkable portfolio of jewellery pieces, is there one particular design that holds a special place in your heart? If so, what makes it so significant to you?

I think, leaving out some of our most show stopping bespoke pieces, it would have to be our Wedeln Diamond & Teal Topaz Ring from the Gstaad Collection. It’s such a fun piece and it was really an exciting design to make, incorporating the wedeln pattern left in the snow whilst skiing into a ring wasn’t easy but it made for such a sensational piece.

Fashion and jewellery often go hand in hand. How do you keep up with the evolving fashion landscape while maintaining the distinct essence of Augustine Jewels?

We do keep an eye on London, Paris and Milan fashion weeks, but jewellery is for generations and so has to also be something that will pass the passage of time as well as being fashionable.

Our new handbag collection that launches in October will also be very on trend and includes a micro bag which is very on message at the moment.

Running a successful jewellery brand requires creativity and business acumen. Could you share a memorable entrepreneurial lesson you’ve learned along the way?

It is all about the people. Hiring people who are competent, design oriented and nice and fun to be around is the aim, but it does not always work out.

Looking back since launching the brand, is there anything you would do differently?

So many things… I don’t know where to start.. but certainly I would have invested more earlier on and had more confidence that it would work out.

Collaboration is essential in the fashion industry. Have you ever collaborated with another designer or brand, and if not, is there a dream collaboration you’d love to pursue in the future?

We collaborate all the time with different brands. Recently we did a show with FINLAY sunglasses and you can see all of our collaborations here.

In the fast-paced world of fashion, how do you ensure your designs remain relevant and captivating to customers year after year?

We bring out 2 new collections a year. You will soon be able to see our new Aurora collection which is inspired by the colours of the Northern Lights. These new collections keep it fresh and we quietly drop collections that are not so successful.

Augustine Jewels has a strong online presence. How has the digital landscape influenced the way you connect with your audience and showcase your designs?

We’ve found that a lot of our customers are based all over the world, so shopping online and promoting our products across our social media platforms has allowed us to tap into markets across the globe. We regularly ship items to Australia, America and lots of European countries too.

The brand’s name, Augustine Jewels, has a distinctive and captivating ring to it. Can you share the story behind the name and its significance to you?

Yes, it came from Augustine Studios, which is a property that I bought early on in my life. It was part of the Silver Studios, and thus it has this wonderful heritage. You can read more about it here.

From concept to finished product, could you walk us through the creative process behind the birth of a new Augustine Jewels collection?

We pride ourselves on providing a luxury bespoke jewellery service from design to packaging, creating exquisite hand-drawn designs and sourcing the most beautiful gemstones to make your jewellery dreams come true. Whether you have a special design in mind, are looking to invest in a stone, or just want to create something beautiful, we can help

Designing a new collection begins much like the design process for our bespoke pieces, we start by choosing the gemstones. From there we begin to draw out some rough sketches and then move into creating a rough stone plan.

After the stone plan is finalised we begin the intricate process of Computer Aided Design modeling, which creates an incredibly precise rendition of the jewellery. This is then sent to our craftsmen who begin to work on the jewellery. After this, it’s a exciting wait whilst the jewellery is in production and then after a few weeks we receive the final product.

Whether it be a stunning ring, necklace or pair of earrings, every piece of jewellery is masterly crafted and designed. Every collection we’ve made takes inspiration from a luxury location, when choosing the gemstones we always make sure to incorporate the colours and beauty of the location in every piece.

The jewellery industry has a rich history and is filled with talented designers. Who are some of your personal inspirations or idols in the field, and how have they influenced your work?

I love the work of Karl Faberge. The reason for this is that the attention to detail was exquisite. Also, he had the most amazing following.

Our readers love travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

We’ve recently just finished designing a collection based on the Northern Lights and I think most of our team are dreaming of visiting the cool landscapes of Iceland and Norway!

Lastly, Augustine Jewels is a brand with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship. What does “craftsmanship” mean to you, and how does it shine through in your jewellery designs?

At Augustine Jewels, we value the art of traditional craftsmanship. Our skilled artisans meticulously handcraft each piece, ensuring attention to detail and creating heirloom-quality jewellery that lasts for generations. By preserving these time-honoured techniques, we support local communities and contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage.

Cherie Harte

Can you share your journey as a self-taught artist and how your childhood experiences influenced your artistic style?

I fondly remember spending hours as a child either drawing or redecorating my bedroom. Looking back, I realize that I was crafting my escape from a challenging childhood through these creative endeavours.

Art became my sanctuary—a safe, loving world that soothed my young soul.

However, during my teenage years, I distanced myself from art due to discouragement from teachers and counsellors who deemed me not “good enough” for the art world. Back then, pursuing art, especially for women, seemed out of reach.

Fast forward to my late 30s: amidst a crumbling marriage and an autoimmune disorder diagnosis, a dear friend invited me to a local art workshop. Reluctant at first, I eventually gave in to the calling. I rekindled my passion, transforming my living room into an art studio.

In a few years, the director of a Toronto art gallery suggested a solo show for my work. Taking a leap of faith led to the beginning of a remarkable journey.

How do you want people to feel when they experience your work?

I want people to feel embraced, seen, and deeply cared for, regardless of their backgrounds. My art aims to evoke a profound sense of humanity, offering a safe space for diverse emotions to surface organically. From there, I hope to guide viewers towards celebration and healing—two intertwined processes in my creative universe.

If you were limited to using only one colour in your future artwork, which colour would you choose?

Without a doubt, it would be PINK! Pink embodies unconditional universal love, compassion, and relationships, resonating with the heart, third eye, and crown chakras.

Could you describe your approach to creating a new piece of artwork? Do you follow a specific process or routine?

My studio ritual begins with lighting a candle, white sage, or incense, creating a sacred space. Engaging in self-reiki and setting intentions, I journal stream-of-consciousness for three pages—a practice inspired by Julia Cameron’s “The Artist’s Way.”

This journaling informs my canvas or textile work, where I weave my daily experiences, infused with the essence of universal love and healing. Aromatherapy, reiki, oracle card readings, crystals, and sound healing are integral elements in my creative sessions, imbuing each artwork with energetic medicines.

What’s the most unusual inspiration that has sparked one of your artworks?

Certainly, it’s the messages from external sources—a beautiful surrendering to something larger than myself. Through my studio practice, I receive downloads and messages meant to be shared, guiding my artistic expression.

If you could create art for any public figure, who would it be and why?

While I don’t follow many celebrities, Oprah Winfrey has always inspired me. Her resilience, spiritual depth, and commitment to healing and love resonate profoundly. Her ability to navigate life’s challenges while illuminating a path for others aligns with my artistic vision.

What’s the most memorable place you’ve created art, and what made it special?

Creating art in Santiago, Chile, stands out as an unforgettable experience. Staying in a heritage home turned art studio, the space was magical, filled with history and creativity. Access to Palolo Valdés Bunster’s studio, with its indoor bridges, swings, and sculptures, was inspiring. The intimate connection with Chilean art, coupled with the warmth of the people, fueled my creativity.

If you could time travel to any era to create art, where and when would you go?

I would journey back to the early-mid 1900s, collaborating with artists like Hilma afKlint, Georgia O’Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Louise Bourgeois, and Joan Mitchell in New York, New Mexico, Mexico, and Paris.

What was the most challenging artwork you’ve created, and what did you learn from the experience?

My recent piece, “Fluffy Heart,” created with a tufting machine, tested my patience and perseverance. Embracing the learning curve, I discovered the beauty in imperfections and the creative solutions that emerge from challenges. Each stitch, each tear, added a unique character, teaching me the value of persistence and embracing quirks in artistic endeavours.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and what project would you work on together?

Yayoi Kusama is an artist I admire deeply. I dream of collaborating on a public healing garden—a blend of nature, spirituality, healing, and art. An immersive experience inviting introspection and connection with our shared humanity.

What’s the best artistic advice you’ve received, and how did it influence your work?

The best advice I received was that art is for everybody, but not all art is for everyone. Embracing this insight allowed me to detach from personal critiques, empowering me to continue creating without being swayed by others’ opinions.

How would you describe your art in three words?

Universal, loving, connection.

Lastly, where can readers find out more about you and your work?

In a captivating dialogue with House of Coco, we immerse ourselves in the profound creative world of artist Lori Tatreau. Lori’s art delves into the interplay of forms and colors, depicting connections and dissolutions that resonate deeply with the human experience. In this exclusive interview, Lori shares specific pieces where this concept becomes poignant, each stroke carrying emotions and inspirations that lead to transformative art.

We explore Lori’s unique choice of working spaces, from sun porches to dining room tables, understanding how these environments shape her artistic journey. With an experimental spirit, she shares moments where dabbling with new mediums led to unexpected, inspiring results, further enriching her artistic evolution.

Lori’s work, often featuring ‘alien-like’ figures, stands as a metaphor for human existence, capturing moments of feeling out of place or disconnected. Through her abstract art, she communicates complex emotions, fostering connections without the burden of race or gender, allowing viewers to experience shared humanity.

Join us in this insightful conversation as Lori shares her inspirations, creative processes, and the profound impact of art on human connections…

Your art explores the interplay of forms and colours, often depicting connections and dissolutions. Could you share a specific piece where this concept is particularly poignant for you? What inspired it and what emotions were you aiming to convey?

Certainly. One painting that embodies the interplay of opposing colors and forms is “Turning.” The contrasting shades of pinks and blacks create a compelling tension. The pink forms seem to either shout at each other or passively orbit around, never touching. Layers beneath add a mysterious backdrop, hinting at containment or a struggle for liberation. I don’t approach my art with predefined meanings; instead, I begin with a color and let the forms guide me. This layering process allows multiple interpretations to surface, inviting viewers to find their own meanings.

Your choice of working spaces, from a sun porch to a dining room table, is fascinating. How does the environment you work in influence your creative process? Are there specific spaces that have significantly impacted your work?

My choice of workspace has been shaped by practical considerations such as time, budget, and available room. Traveling extensively led me to give up a separate studio, pushing me to work in whatever space was unoccupied during renovations. Later, as a parent, I shifted to small watercolors on the dining table, leading to a new artistic direction. Working on a smaller scale allowed me to invest more time in each piece, resulting in a slower yet more prolific creative process. Now, having a larger studio, I can explore a broader range of materials and sizes, adding depth to my work.

You mentioned using various supports and mediums. Can you describe an instance where experimenting with a new medium led to unexpected and inspiring results? How do these experiments contribute to your artistic growth?

Recently, I revisited a series created two decades ago, experimenting with diverse materials like paint, ink, glitter, and text on vellum and canvas paper.

When displayed as a large installation, these pieces took on new life. Incorporating text, such as song lyrics and thoughts, allowed me to convey personal experiences in a more open and authentic manner.

Additionally, the use of gold, in its various forms, added depth, symbolizing value. Such experiments not only enrich my artistic expression but also enable me to connect on a deeper level with my audience.

The idea of your art as stand-ins for human experiences is intriguing. Could you elaborate on how these ‘alienlike’ figures represent our existence? What message or story do you hope viewers perceive through these representations?

My abstract forms, often resembling alien figures, capture the sense of feeling out of place in specific situations. These shapes, free from specific race or gender, represent emotions like discomfort and disconnection. I have a series called “Hungry Ghosts,” embodying insatiable desires and helplessness.

These figures highlight societal issues, reflecting the struggles faced in today’s world. Through these shapes, I aim to evoke empathy, making viewers reflect on their own experiences of not fitting in.

Working on a small scale due to space constraints, you mentioned envisioning painting barn-sized artworks someday. Can you describe the vision you have for these large-scale pieces? How do you think working on such a grand scale would impact your creative expression?

I envision creating monumental works akin to Picasso’s Guernica or Anselm Kiefer’s masterpieces. These pieces would address political and social issues, demanding attention through their sheer size and intensity. Working on such a scale would allow me to use my entire body, employing ladders and abundant materials.

Some works might delve into dark, profound commentaries, while others could offer a comforting embrace. The scale would intensify my creative process, enabling me to explore vast themes with a heightened emotional impact.

Your affinity for modernism and abstract expression is evident. How do you balance traditional techniques with your innovative approach to creating art? Are there specific artists or movements that inspire your modernist exploration?

I draw inspiration from abstract expressionists like Motherwell, Kline, and Frankenthaler. Their mark-making techniques influence my work, as does the humour and commentary of Philip Guston.

Anselm Kiefer’s emotional layering and Georgia O’Keefe’s simplicity and authenticity resonate with me. While I incorporate elements from these masters, I infuse my unique style, often integrating humor, unconventional materials, and distinct mark-making.

By blending tradition with innovation, I strive to create a bridge between modernism and post-modernism, exploring diverse artistic possibilities.

The process of creating art is often as important as the final outcome. Can you share a memorable experience during your creative process where you felt completely immersed, transcending your ego and self? What did you learn from that moment?

During my MFA at Hunter College, I grappled with finding my artistic format. Reading Conversations Before the End of Time, a book on environmentalism and art, I felt abstract painting was inadequate to address pressing issues.

However, I rediscovered my love for abstract art, realizing its power to connect with people emotionally.

One significant moment was when I unknowingly wore mismatched shoes all day, absorbed in my work. Losing track of time and self in art is liberating, allowing me to access the core of my expression. This immersive experience taught me the importance of embracing my true passion and allowing creativity to flow organically.

The quotes you provided emphasise the transformative power of creative work. How do these words resonate with your own artistic journey? Have there been moments where you felt your art had a profound impact on others, or perhaps even transformed their perspectives?

Art transformed my life when I shifted my major from social work to art after being moved by a fellow student’s painting. Similarly, when viewers express how my art resonates with them, I find profound meaning in my work.

Witnessing others connect with my emotions and experiences reaffirms the transformative potential of art. My aim is to share my vulnerability and evoke genuine emotions, allowing viewers to see the world from a different perspective.

You mentioned seeing yourself within the canon of American painting. In what ways do you believe your work contributes to the evolution of this tradition? How do you envision your legacy within the context of American art?

If I were considered part of American painting, I hope my abstraction combines simplicity, emotional depth, and modern craft materials. I aim to straddle the line between modernism and post-modernism, integrating unconventional materials and unique display methods. My legacy, within American art, would ideally blend traditional techniques with innovative approaches, fostering a diverse dialogue within the artistic community.

The idea of art as a gift to the world is beautiful. Could you share a specific instance where you felt your art was a gift to others, eliciting a meaningful response or connection from your audience? How did that experience inspire your future work?

An impactful moment occurred in undergrad when a viewer connected deeply with a personal painting. This encounter inspired me to continue sharing my life openly through art.

The genuine connection between my art and its viewers motivates me to delve deeper into my emotions, believing that authenticity resonates universally. This experience fuels my desire to create art as a gift, fostering meaningful connections and enriching the lives of others.

The concept of navigating without a map resonates deeply with the creative process. Can you recall a moment when you faced uncertainty or creative block and how you overcame it? What advice would you give to emerging artists facing similar challenges?

I have experienced years-long creative blocks, learning not to be harsh on myself. Creativity takes diverse forms, whether in art or everyday life. Recognizing opportunities to express creativity, even beyond traditional art-making, is crucial. Personally, accepting my unique approach and intertwining it with social commentary freed my creativity. I trust my process, allowing myself to flow without rigid expectations. My advice is to embrace uncertainty, experiment freely, and explore various avenues of creative expression.

Your work often incorporates suggestions of landscapes. How does nature inspire your creations? Are there specific natural elements or scenes that consistently find their way into your art? What do these elements symbolize for you?

Nature, especially open skies and landscapes, deeply influences my work. Growing up in Nebraska, the horizon represents endless possibilities to me. Mountains, oceans, rivers, and rocks all find their way into my art, symbolising interconnectedness and shared existence.

Macroscopic views of moss, cells, or galaxies inspire me, showcasing nature’s diverse patterns. Abstraction allows these elements to coexist, emphasizing the relationship between forms and environments.

Your choice to work in multiples and on squares is intriguing. Is there a particular reason for this preference? How do these repetitive forms contribute to the overall narrative or aesthetic of your body of work?

I am drawn to the challenge of organizing designs within squares, and the 12” x 12” size resonates with my passion for record albums. It offers an intimate yet impactful canvas that can be both handheld and wall-mounted.

The grid structure, seemingly contrary to my flowing abstraction, acts as a container, exploring ideas of connection and boundaries. Repetition in my work signifies unity in diversity, bringing disparate thoughts together into a harmonious whole.

Artistic influences can come from various sources. Are there any non-artistic influences, such as literature, music, or personal experiences, which have significantly shaped your creative perspective? How do these influences manifest in your artwork?

Literature and music play pivotal roles in my life, finding expression in my art through incorporation of text. Song lyrics and lines from books serve as inspiration, adding layers of meaning to my work. While not directly illustrated, these influences provide a rich backdrop, allowing viewers to explore deeper connections and interpretations.

Your work is deeply rooted in the exploration of human connections. What message or feeling do you hope viewers take away from your art? In your opinion, how can art foster a sense of connection and understanding among diverse audiences?

I hope viewers find familiarity in my art, recognizing shared experiences and emotions. Art has the power to unite people, highlighting our common humanity beyond superficial differences.

By delving into the depths of emotion, my work seeks to evoke empathy and understanding, bridging gaps between diverse audiences. Through genuine emotions, art becomes a universal language, fostering connections that transcend barriers.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is at the top of your bucket list?

While I haven’t traveled extensively, destinations like Lake Como and Tuscany in Italy have always fascinated me. Additionally, London currently captures my imagination, especially after discovering the show Escape to the Country.

When lacking motivation, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

When in need of inspiration, I yearn for the simplicity of nature. While I used to find solace in a Colorado cabin by the river, I now seek new escapes, such as drives in the prairie or any outdoor walk, to rejuvenate my creative spirit.

Welcome to the world of Clean Carats, a jewellery brand brought to life by the passion and dedication of Sam and Alex. In their intimate studio, nestled amidst creativity and craftsmanship, every piece is meticulously handcrafted, infused with love and meaning.

With a genuine passion for creating honest and distinctive jewellery meant to last a lifetime, Sam and Alex invite you to delve into their world of craftsmanship and artistry. This interview unravels the story behind Clean Carats and the vision that drives these talented artisans…

“Slow making” is a unique concept. Could you elaborate on how it influences your design and production process, and why it’s essential to your brand?

From the moment we first began establishing Clean Carats, focussing on sustainability and ethical practices has always been important to us. Clean Carats was born as a passion project – it was never about having a factory line producing as many products as possible – it’s always been just Sam & I working side by side in our little studio, doing what we love.

To us, slow making is all about taking our time with each piece to source materials from ethical channels, consideration for our clients’ personal stories and dreams during the design phase, and never rushing the making process – taking our time to craft every piece with intention and love.

The pieces we create aren’t items you purchase every day – they represent special life events, carry emotional weight, tell stories and are deeply personal to the wearer. With the gravity of this in mind, we take time to make sure our designs are absolutely perfect and thoughtful in every way… in our materials, our craftsmanship, and our ethos.

Could you share some insights into the materials you use to craft your jewels and how they contribute to the overall aesthetic and quality of your creations?

Absolutely – the materials we use play a huge part in the quality and aesthetic of our work!

The gold we use to craft our jewels with is a mix of recycled and alluvial gold, which is local gold that flows through the rivers of the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand. These alluvial operations are not destructive to the environment and comply with strict protocols put in place by DOC (Department of Conservation).

As for our gemstones, Sam & I spend hours sifting through thousands of stones to handpick the most unique ones for our pieces. From ethereal opalescent sapphires to cosmic salt and pepper diamonds, thanks to exceptional gems like these there is a real essence of magic and grounding to the universe in each of our jewels.

Tell us about the significance of sourcing ethical stones and how it impacts the overall quality of your jewellery.

Ethical sourcing has always been a non-negotiable for us since day one.

The diamonds and gemstones we use in our pieces are sourced directly from mainly family owned mines and artisanal gem cutters, whose ideologies align with ours. Supporting the communities the stones were mined from, fair labour practices and sustainable environmental operations are extremely important to Sam & I.

Through these tight-knit relationships, we are able to handpick unique stones that other makers don’t have access to – which is why a lot of our rings feature stones unlike anything most people have ever seen before.

Your brand is dedicated to crafting honest and unique jewellery. How do you stay innovative and maintain your distinct style in a competitive market?

To be honest, we don’t worry too much about what everyone else is doing – we don’t scour the market or create based on trends, we focus on making only what we wholeheartedly enjoy making, which is reflected in our craftsmanship.

Creating pieces we’re genuinely passionate about making has always been imperative to us both. Inspired by our own artistic taste, creativity and experiences; I think being authentic and true to our passion gives our pieces their distinct style.

It’s been incredible to see people connect with our pieces and our ethos so strongly.

I’d encourage anyone reading this to buy your jewels from a jeweller that you resonate with and supports you to be authentically who you are.

The personal stories of your customers seem to play a significant role in your brand. Can you share an example of how a customer’s story has touched you or influenced your work?

We enjoy every aspect of daily life as Clean Carats, but one of the best parts has got to be connecting with our customers and clients. It makes my day when previous customers reach out to share photos of their proposals or weddings. There have been so many moments we’ve been touched.

I love getting to know our clients whilst working together on bespoke (custom) rings, whether it’s for themselves or their partner, hearing the stories of how they met or how they plan to propose, it’s always so heartwarming. It’s impossible to not feel excited along with them!

Sam & I are endlessly grateful to be able to play a small part of each of our customers’ love stories and it is a truly special part of what we get to do.

To stay updated with Sam and Alex’s exquisite creations and the inspiring journey of Clean Carats, follow their story and immerse yourself in the world of authentic craftsmanship and heartfelt connections.

Can you take us back to the moment when you decided to turn your dream of starting a fashion label into reality? What was the driving force behind making that leap?

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always dreamt of seeing my designs on people as they walk down the street. I knew my destiny was in the world of fashion; I just didn’t know how to make it happen until the end of 2019. That’s when the vision for onetwenty swim was born. After returning from an inspiring 8-week trip in Europe, I started sketching designs on my mom’s living room table. However, I didn’t take the plunge until February 2022. At the age of 25, in a new city on the Gold Coast, I felt that I had reached a point in my life where I was truly ready to focus on my career and devote all my energy to my business. We all know that building a brand takes an immense amount of hard work and commitment. I also felt mentally prepared to take the risk and believe in myself throughout this journey.

**Some of the designs I sketched on my mom’s dining room table in November 2019 became part of the first collection launched in November 2022!

It’s clear that swimwear holds a special place in your heart. Could you share a memorable experience from your teenage years that solidified your passion for swimwear and fashion?

During my teenage years, I never felt comfortable wearing bikinis because I was self-conscious about my belly. I stuck to one-piece swimsuits and spent hours searching for flattering cuts and high-quality brands, only to come across pieces that were of poor quality and didn’t last long. Despite buying these pieces, I always wished for something like onetwenty swim to exist. Even though I’ve since worked on my body confidence and now love it, I still wanted to create a brand that showcases sexy one-piece swimsuits, allowing people to feel confident in their own skin.

The concept of onetwenty swim is fascinating, with a focus on producing only 20 pieces per style. How did you come up with this unique approach, and what impact do you think it has on the brand and its customers?

I personally love owning unique items that not everyone else has. Wearing something one-of-a-kind gives me a sense of satisfaction, and I wanted to create a brand that offers this same feeling to others. I considered various names like onethirty and onefifty, but onetwenty resonated with me on a deeper level, and I knew it was the right choice. By limiting each style to only twenty pieces, we allow our customers to have something truly unique in their wardrobe. They value these pieces for a lifetime and become part of a movement that appreciates slow fashion and conscious shopping.

In a world that often emphasises fast fashion and mass production, your brand stands for slow fashion and exclusivity. How do you see this philosophy influencing the way people perceive and value their clothing?

Fast fashion often results in pieces in your wardrobe that are not treasured. You wear them a couple of times, get tired of them, and eventually throw them away. They don’t hold a special place in your heart. On the other hand, investing a bit more in high-quality, unique, one-of-a-kind pieces is a different story. These are the items you cherish, ones you want to keep in your closet forever, and would never consider giving away because they are truly special. It’s like the difference between dating casually and falling in love. Fast fashion pieces are the casual dates, while onetwenty swim is the love you fall head over heels for.

Creating designs that cater to various body shapes and sizes while maintaining exclusivity is a remarkable feat. Could you share a story of how your brand has helped someone feel confident and beautiful in their own skin?

Thank you! It’s incredibly important to me to showcase beauty in all its forms through this brand. I keep a folder of all the wonderful reviews we receive because it warms my heart to hear about the positive experiences people have in my designs.

One of my favourite stories is from a customer who said, “I love it so much you have no idea – I’ve never felt sexy or attractive in a one-piece before! I want it in every colour possible!” Hearing that she feels sexy and attractive is what I live for. I understand that it can be challenging to feel comfortable in swimwear, so my goal is for all my customers to feel incredibly sexy and confident while showing a little skin.

Sustainability is a core value of onetwenty swim. Could you elaborate on your journey towards using recycled fabrics and sustainable practices, and how you ensure your brand contributes positively to both people and the environment?

Creating an ethical and environmentally conscious brand was a top priority for me. I carefully selected an eco-friendly manufacturer who shares these values. Our fabric is made from recycled ocean waste, our prints use eco-friendly ink, and all our packaging, from our manufacturer down to what our customers receive, is fully recyclable or biodegradable. Our manufacturers operate on solar power, and they treat their workers with the utmost respect and pay them well above the standard requirements. I even visited the manufacturer myself to witness the environment and meet the workers firsthand.

Every design seems to carry a deeper intention. Can you walk us through the creative process behind crafting a new swimsuit design, from inspiration to the final product?

There’s no specific formula, and inspiration can strike at any moment. My creative process begins with inspiration, which can come from anything, anywhere, at any time. It’s a fusion of my heart and my hand sketching. I could create countless different one-piece swimsuits and get completely lost in the creative flow. The most challenging part is selecting which designs to bring to life for a collection. This brand truly reflects my personality, and I would never release anything that I don’t wholeheartedly love. I believe that if I love it, my customers will too.

Your commitment to giving back by donating 10% of each collection’s profits to charity is truly commendable. Could you tell us about the impact your brand has made through these charitable contributions?

Our goal is to donate 10% of the profits from each collection to various charities as a way to spread love and make a positive impact. Since we are still in the midst of selling our first collection, we haven’t made any donations yet. However, I’m considering conducting a poll on our social media to let our followers and customers choose which charity they would like us to support when the time comes.

Queensland, Australia is known for its natural beauty. How does the coastal lifestyle and environment of Queensland influence your brand’s aesthetics and values?

Queensland, particularly the Gold Coast, exudes a coastal, laid-back vibe with a touch of cheekiness when it comes to fashion. People here are not afraid to show a little skin, which aligns perfectly with my designs. My sense of style is a blend of cheeky and elegant, and this shines through in my work. While my brand is influenced by the Gold Coast, it’s more a reflection of who I am as a person.

Fashion often runs in families. Could you share any stories about your personal experiences with fashion growing up, and how your family’s influence may have shaped your creative journey?

Absolutely! My mother has always been a fashion enthusiast, dressed in designer clothes from head to toe for as long as I can remember. We used to go on mother-daughter shopping trips to the mall, and I would try on dozens of outfits but only buy one because I’m quite selective. My mom and I enjoyed dressing up together. On my dad’s side, my grandmother was also passionate about fashion. She owned the only boutique in the small town of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia, where I grew up. Her influence definitely played a role in shaping my early fascination with fashion.

As a founder, you wear many hats. How do you balance the creative aspects of designing swimsuits with the business side of running a fashion label?

I thrive in a state of flow rather than adhering to a rigid routine. I maintain a weekly list of tasks and go with what feels right on any given day. On the busiest days, when I feel overwhelmed by my to-do list, I remind myself how much I love what I do and how fortunate I am to be in this position. A strong mindset is essential when building a business, and it helps to be incredibly passionate about it. Additionally, having one of my closest friends working alongside me, who shares the same vision and passion for onetwenty swim, has been invaluable. This brand wouldn’t be where it is without her.

The name “onetwenty swim” carries a unique significance. Could you reveal the story behind the name and how it ties into the brand’s identity?

“One” represents one-piece swimsuits, and “twenty” signifies that only twenty of each style will ever be sold. The name came to me naturally, and it just felt right. As we continue to expand, I hope to create lines like “twotwenty” and “threetwenty.” The possibilities are limitless!

Your brand celebrates diversity in all forms. How do you envision the fashion industry evolving to become even more inclusive and representative in the coming years?

I hope to see greater inclusion and diversity in the fashion industry, and I hope to see it happen soon. I want people from all corners of the world to see themselves represented on runways, in magazines, on TV shows, billboards, and in advertisements. When individuals see themselves represented, it empowers them to feel beautiful just as they are, rather than feeling pressured to conform to a certain ideal. It’s crucial to showcase different sizes, backgrounds, ages, genders, and celebrate the beauty in all of it. By doing so, we’re sending a powerful message to people worldwide that they are beautiful, they are worthy, and they are enough exactly as they are. That’s truly empowering!

Entrepreneurship is often filled with both highs and lows. Could you share a challenging moment you faced while building onetwenty swim and how you overcame it?

Building this brand has been undoubtedly one of the most challenging endeavors of my life, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. After launching, I initially thought swimsuits would fly off the shelves, naively underestimating the importance of marketing and brand awareness. When that didn’t happen, I was crushed. Self-doubt crept in, and I worried about finances. I felt like I was thrown into the deep end without a life raft. However, I firmly believe that if a desire is placed in your heart, it’s meant for you. So, I persevered. I believe in this brand, and I love it deeply. I won’t stop until it reaches the heights I envision, no matter what it takes.

Launching a brand comes with its fair share of highs, lows, and moments of doubt, but what keeps me going is my unwavering drive, determination, and sheer passion for what I do. These elements overshadow self-doubt, challenges, and difficult times. Over the years, I’ve cultivated a strong and optimistic mindset to navigate tough times, and I’m fortunate to have an incredible support system made up of truly wonderful people. I couldn’t navigate life without them.

Your brand exudes a sense of empowerment. What advice would you give to aspiring fashion entrepreneurs who want to make a meaningful impact on the industry while staying true to their values?

Be yourself. Design like yourself, grow your brand like yourself, and stay true to yourself. Tune out the noise that doesn’t align with your values because there will be plenty of it. Not all advice is good advice, so trust your instincts and intuition. In a world filled with influences at our fingertips, it can be easy to forget who you are and what you stand for. But it’s incredibly refreshing when someone breaks away from trends, embraces their uniqueness, and lets their authentic self shine through everything they do. And most importantly, take the leap and keep going. Pursue your dream relentlessly until you achieve it.

Our readers love to travel. Where do you call home?

I have a diverse background; I’m half Filipino, half Italian, and I’m a Sagittarius, so I’m all about travel! I was born in the Philippines and have lived in various Australian cities, including Darwin, Melbourne, Adelaide, and now I finally call the Gold Coast home. I absolutely love it here; it’s where I’m meant to be!

What destination is at the top of your bucket list?

While I’m usually a beach lover and tropical islands are my go-to, my partner and I have been talking about visiting Japan soon. I feel like I would return with a wealth of fashion inspiration.

Meet Arina Kaznina, the visionary founder of ROSéA Lingerie, a brand that is redefining luxury and sensuality in the world of fashion. Arina’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, sustainability, and inclusivity. In this inspiring story, we’ll uncover the driving force behind her brand, her unwavering commitment to transparency, and her mission to empower individuals to embrace their unique beauty.

Get ready to be inspired by a trailblazer who is changing the fashion industry one ethically crafted piece of lingerie at a time…

Arina, could you please share the story behind the name “ROSéA” and how it reflects your brand’s philosophy?

The inspiration for our brand name comes from the wine industry, drawing its meaning from Rosé wine and champagne. I believe the clothing industry has much in common with the wine industry. The hard work and care farmers and producers put into the product to achieve such a delicate and beautiful drink are well-known and widely discussed. However, the work that farmers, producers, and garment workers do is often overlooked and forgotten, even though these people suffer unfair conditions and wages.

Rosé also portrays a strong sense of exclusivity and taste, which are a significant part of ROSéA. We strive to provide the highest quality luxury lingerie that is made sustainably and ethically.

The concept of “Lingerie Brut” is unique and captivating. Can you elaborate on how this name encapsulates your brand’s identity and values?

I wanted to make the link between the wine/champagne industry more evident to the consumer, hence how the “Lingerie Brut” concept came up. One of the main pillars of my brand is transparency. It tightly correlates with the wine industry since no matter what wine or champagne you buy, cheap or expensive, you will know where the grapes come from, who made it, how long it took to make, and more information. When was the last time you could find that information when buying a new T-shirt or any clothing item? For me, it is essential that you know where the fabrics come from, where the lingerie was made, and who made it.

Your brand emphasizes embracing imperfections and unique beauty. How did this empowering perspective influence the design of your logo and the message you aim to convey?

I genuinely believe that every person is uniquely beautiful, and I hope more people will embrace and celebrate that. However, social media makes it difficult for people to see the beauty behind their ‘imperfections’. Each woman should feel her beauty, sensuality, and confidence no matter what ‘imperfections’ she sees. This belief inspired our logo as the letters ‘O’ and ‘é’ represent different-sized boobs. It is common for women to be subconscious about this; however, we want to show that imperfections will never define one’s beauty. On the contrary, they make us unique and gorgeous.

Your mission is to explore and highlight feminine sensuality and uniqueness consciously. How does ROSéA’s approach stand out in promoting this message compared to other lingerie brands?

Our lingerie is primarily made to be worn as a part of an outfit. We want to break the stereotype that lingerie is very private or too sexy. ROSéA aims to unlock and highlight your inner confidence by creating sensual yet classy looks for any occasion. Even though we are too small to provide a wide size range, we have prioritized ‘smart’ design. Our bodysuits are highly adjustable and create an individualized fit for many different body shapes and sizes.

Transparency is a key pillar of your brand. Could you tell us more about how ROSéA ensures transparency with regards to manufacturers, fabrics, and prices?

The fashion industry is slowly gaining sustainability momentum; however, with the good side of it also comes the bad, which is greenwashing. It was crucial for me to create a brand that ensured consumers that the statements were factual and that we were taking the environment and workers very seriously. Our consumers know exactly where our materials come from, where the lingerie is made, what certifications the fabrics have, and how much it costs to produce each piece of lingerie. Transparency is the foundation of a great relationship between the customer and the brand.

Visiting the small family-owned factories where your lingerie is produced showcases a strong commitment to ethical production. Could you share an experience from one of these visits that particularly resonated with you?

Finding a factory took a lot of work. I was looking for a factory whose values aligned with the values of ROSéA and whose priority was worker well-being. When I first visited the factory we work with in Coimbra, a small town in Portugal, our relationship immediately clicked. The factory has been operating since 1983 and is still completely family-owned and managed. The family was extremely welcoming and was keen on showing me around, encouraging their workers to share their experiences and being as transparent as we are. I loved the atmosphere that they created, as it was warm, friendly, and caring. I also learned that they have an impressive record. They have not had a single worker leave their job to find another one; the only people leaving their jobs are either for retirement or to raise a family. This says a lot about the management, work ethic, and worker well-being.

Your commitment to reducing the carbon footprint is impressive. How does producing lingerie in Portugal and sourcing materials from within the EU contribute to a more sustainable supply chain?

Keeping our supply chain close to the factory helps to significantly decrease the carbon footprint since we don’t need to transport our materials across the whole world. We source the highest quality certified fabrics from Italy, Spain, and Portugal. The proximity of suppliers also helps us ensure the standard of quality and safe working conditions since we don’t need to travel far to visit them.

Certified fabrics are an essential part of your sustainability strategy. Can you tell us about some of the trusted international standards that you prioritise in the selection of your fabrics?

Certification is an essential criterion for me when choosing fabrics. No matter how excellent the materials are, I would only select them if an official certification backs them up. This rigorous selection ensures that no greenwashing is passed on to our consumers. Many suppliers and brands use recycled fabrics; however, only a tiny fraction of them can prove that with certification. All our materials have ‘Global Recycled Standard’ certification. Additionally, all suppliers have ‘OEKO-TEX’ certifications, meaning that no toxic or hazardous substances were used, so both the workers and the end consumers are safe. Many suppliers hold more quality, sustainability, and safety certifications, such as ‘REACH,’ ‘HIGG,’ ‘WCA,’ and ‘ISO.’ I am incredibly proud of our suppliers and our high selection standards.

Multi-use design is a fascinating concept that aligns with your brand’s values. Could you provide examples of how ROSéA achieves this in its lingerie creations?

Our design process aims to create timeless designs that are easily stylable with various clothes. We look at classy colors and patterns that will serve you many years rather than one season. Bodysuits are much more versatile than bras and underwear since you can style them as part of the outfits and wear them under your clothes. Our lingerie provides more than just support; it offers a final touch or a centerpiece to your look, depending on how you style it. Our Instagram provides many styling ideas for various occasions and seasons.

In an industry with numerous clothing brands, what motivated you to focus specifically on lingerie and create a brand that emphasises sustainability and inclusivity?

When I graduated high school, I became very passionate about sustainability, and it became my focus during my university years to integrate it into my daily life. I haven’t bought a single fast fashion clothing item in the last six years, and the ones I purchased before are still in use in my wardrobe because I take great care of them. It is vital for me to make more environmentally conscious decisions in my daily life. One day, I was looking for new lingerie and realized there were not many sustainable alternatives to sensual lingerie; if you wanted eco-friendly lingerie, you had to choose plain boring cotton sets. That is how I came to the idea of creating ROSéA – sustainable luxury lingerie that focuses on creating sexy and empowering lingerie.

It’s admirable that you acknowledge your brand’s imperfections while aiming for positive change. Can you share a particular challenge or obstacle you’ve encountered in your journey towards sustainability and how you’ve addressed it?

Early on in this journey, I didn’t have extensive knowledge about fabrics and their properties. I wanted to create our lingerie from silk to provide a more sustainable product which is 100% biodegradable. However, I learned that all the brands that use silk for lingerie rarely disclose the part that the fabric is never 100% silk. Silk is highly rigid and cannot make good lingerie products as they won’t fit well so close to the body; the fabric is always a blend of 2-10% elastane, which ultimately removes the main sustainability factor from silk – biodegradability. Silk blends are also not certified by major trusted institutions, so we cannot guarantee our customers how the fabric was made, where it originated from, etc. I decided to prioritize certification and transparency, meaning we work with certified recycled polyester materials. I am still upset that our products are not biodegradable. Still, we are open about it and focus on encouraging customers to wear our lingerie longer, more often and take better care of it.

Education and inspiration play a role in driving change. How does ROSéA actively engage with its audience to educate them about conscious consumption and the impact of their choices?

We emphasise the importance of research when buying something new. Some brands do an incredible job of being transparent; we want more people to pay attention to that. I am also adamant about showing people more ways to style an item. People often don’t put enough thought into finding new combinations within an existing wardrobe, and wearing the clothes you already have is the most sustainable option.

In your vision for the future, what kind of impact do you hope ROSéA Lingerie will have on the broader fashion industry, and how do you see other brands being influenced by your mission?

I hope that our transparency mission inspires more brands. I want to see big brands open up to us and share details about how the clothes are made, where they come from, who made them, and their efforts to improve. We might think luxury brands are reliable regarding sustainability because they always say ‘made in France or ‘made in Italy’; however, many luxury brands do 90% of the item in countries with cheaper labor and only do the final finishings in Europe. It is wild to think they can legally say the whole item was made in Europe when only the label was sewn here, but it is the reality. We want transparency across the industry to become a standard.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who wish to combine their passion for fashion with a commitment to sustainability, based on your experience founding ROSéA Lingerie?

My advice is not to be afraid to start, even if you lack knowledge or experience. You will make mistakes, but you will also learn quickly and do what you are passionate about. There are trustworthy factories and institutions to help your dream become a reality.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

My dream destination is Japan. I am fascinated with Japanese culture and their minimalist approach to life. We have much to learn from them about living a simpler life with fewer possessions. I also love Japanese food and would love to go off-piste skiing there. Due to the geographical location of Japan, its snow has a much lower density, making it the best off-piste ski destination in the world.

What does self-care mean to you?

Self-care, for me, is mostly about movement. I love doing sports and moving my body in enjoyable ways. An active day gives me energy, head clarity, and boosts my mood. I am also obsessed with skincare; my morning and evening rituals really help me to get a moment to check in with myself and relax. Sunscreen is my best friend, no matter the weather or the season.

So, prepare to be inspired, as we embark on a journey with Georgie Roberts, the creative force behind Wanderlust Life, and learn how she plans to continue spreading love and meaning through her remarkable jewellery…

Georgie, could you kindly share the story of how Wanderlust Life came to life, from its inception in your spare bedroom to the brand it has become today?

In between my travel experiences, I held various roles, from opening galleries to managing yoga retreats and working for creative agencies. However, I never felt truly content. Looking back, I realized that I yearned to captain my own ship.

I grew up in a coastal surf town and was fortunate to spend many winters abroad. It was during one of these journeys, between jobs, that the idea for Wanderlust Life was born. I remember doodling on a plane and listing all the things I loved, things that ignited my passion—and that’s where it all began.

The seed of an idea planted on a long plane journey soon blossomed into reality when I returned to Devon. Initially, the business operated from my spare bedroom. As the business expanded, so did our team. We quickly realised that we needed more space, which led to the opening of the Wanderlust Life shop and studio in Braunton in 2018. Today, our business thrives with a close-knit team of 15 designers, makers, sales support, and marketers. I’m incredibly grateful to have such a fantastic team accompanying me on this journey.

Collaboration is one of Wanderlust Life’s core values. Could you share some memorable collaborations that have shaped the brand’s journey and design aesthetic?

Collaboration lies at the heart of everything we do. Above all, I feel fortunate to have a supportive and collaborative team. Every team member plays a vital role, from the initial concept to crafting the pieces to managing the shop floor. We value every voice and idea, no matter how small. Our studio is a space where we love to brainstorm without judgment, often leading to brilliant ideas.

Over the years, we’ve partnered with remarkable charity organisations. More recently, we collaborated with Love Welcomes, a non-profit CIC that emerged in response to the refugee crisis. They transformed discarded hi-vis lifejackets found on shores into homeware designs that refugee women could create and sell. The bright orange color became their signature, inspiring a limited-edition orange enamel heart-shaped pendant. This pendant is not only beautiful but also serves as a poignant reminder of the refugee crisis and the ongoing challenges people face.

Authenticity is another crucial value for Wanderlust Life. How do you ensure that authenticity is reflected in both your jewellery and the brand as a whole?

Our small team is deeply involved in every step of the process, from design and creation to marketing and sales. We are passionate about what we do, and our team genuinely cares. Each piece we create is imbued with meaning and crafted with love.

All our jewellery is either made in-house or with select artisan partners. We pour our love for our work into every piece. Each item carries its unique significance, handcrafted with care.

What advice would you give to aspiring jewellery designers who want to infuse their work with authenticity and deep meaning, as you do with Wanderlust Life?

If you love what you do, that passion will shine through in your creations. So, my advice is to stay passionate about your work, and the rest will naturally fall into place.

Creativity is a driving force behind your brand. Could you share insights into your creative process and how you continue to find inspiration?

Creativity fuels creativity! The more we surround ourselves with creativity, the more inspiration flows. Our open studio encourages the sharing of experiences, ideas, and thoughts, all contributing to our design process. We are fortunate to live in a breathtaking part of the world, and our coastline is a constant source of inspiration. However, expanding our horizons, through travel and meeting new people, consistently sparks new ideas.

Wanderlust Life is based in Devon, and the natural beauty of the region appears to be integral to your brand’s identity. How does the beauty of Devon influence your work and creative vision?

I’ve always lived by the sea, and I’m incredibly grateful for its proximity. The ocean’s ever-changing nature, from calm waters to wild seas, provides a never-ending source of inspiration. Whether it’s a serene moment for relaxation or a wild, windy day for a run, the beach serves as our playground. It’s the backdrop to our lives, hosting beach dips, winter walks, photoshoots during golden hours, and post-work BBQ gatherings.

Could you share some of your favourite stories or customer experiences related to how your jewellery has made a meaningful impact on someone’s life?

We consider it a privilege to be part of special customer moments. It’s heartwarming to see the inscriptions we engrave on jewellery come to life. We’ve been a part of numerous significant occasions, from marriages and proposals to anniversaries and births—moments that truly matter.

Your journey from a seaside village in Croyde to launching Wanderlust Life is inspiring. What were some of the challenges you faced along the way, and how did you overcome them?

Over the past decade, we’ve encountered numerous challenges, including navigating a global pandemic. However, I’ve learned to view these challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. We can’t control external forces, but we can choose how we respond to them. This perspective has evolved over the years, helping us overcome obstacles.

Wanderlust Life has a predominantly female team. How does this all-female team contribute to the brand’s success and creativity?

With our predominantly female team and female-founded business, we lead with a feminine energy—one that prioritizes empathy, love, and kindness in our business approach. We believe that these qualities are our superpowers and should never be mistaken for weaknesses.

Can you tell us about a piece of jewellery from your collection that holds special significance to you personally, and the story behind it?

There are a couple of pieces that hold profound personal significance. Our signature gemstone fine cord necklace was the first silhouette we created and remains incredibly special. Its design exudes simplicity, and a decade later, it still feels timeless. Each gemstone carries its meaning, translated into a mantra that resonates with the wearer. Whenever I feel a bit off course, I wear my Aquamarine piece as a personal reminder of my journey and purpose. This piece was designed to become a personal talisman for all wearers.

In addition to your online presence, you have a physical store that offers engraving and customisation. How does this in-store experience enhance the connection between your customers and your brand?

This is a story that reminds us that when love and passion are woven together, dreams can indeed become reality, and businesses can transform into legacies…

Can you share the story behind the creation of Elementi Atelier and how it all began?

A: It’s a truly beautiful love story. About nine years ago, I found myself in London, yearning for some much-needed sunshine. Malta became my destination of choice, and little did I know that this trip would change my life forever. There, I encountered a local man whose striking blue eyes left me utterly captivated.

For a week, we shared sunrises and sunsets, our hair kissed by saltwater, and our hearts swept away by the gentle sea breezes. It was a surreal experience, and I couldn’t fathom the thought of leaving when the time came. However, reality beckoned, and I reluctantly returned to London.

Despite the distance, our infatuation for each other continued to grow over the next six months. It was during this time that I made a life-altering decision – I decided to leave my job in London and follow my heart, which had firmly found its place in Malta.

Now, our love story has blossomed into a beautiful marriage, and together, we are raising a wonderful son. Oh, and a mixed breed pooch, whom we affectionately named “Pooch.”

Elementi Atelier specializes in handmade bridal accessories. What inspired you to focus on this niche in the wedding industry?

A: When I was preparing for my own wedding, I was a bit surprised by the lack of personal style in bridal accessories. Everything seemed to revolve around the princess theme, with silver and shimmer dominating the scene. However, my wedding gown was a delicate bone-colored satin gown, and I yearned for a headpiece adorned with champagne-shade pearls, inspired by nature.

With a background in Amsterdam’s Fashion Academy, I made the bold decision to craft my own headpiece. It’s often said that the best business ideas are born from personal experiences, from moments of discomfort. In this case, I was absolutely right, for I soon discovered that I wasn’t alone in my quest for unique bridal accessories.

Within the first three months of showcasing my very first piece, I received an influx of requests that made it clear – I had stumbled upon a calling that could become a full-time career.

How would you describe the unique style and design philosophy of Elementi Atelier’s bridal accessories?

A: I have a deep affection for nature motifs, particularly silk flowers, delicate petals, and graceful leaves. When I incorporate pearls and crystals into my creations, the compositions seem to unfold organically as I work. I rarely follow a preconceived plan.

Elementi is more than just a brand; it’s an immersive experience, far beyond the typical retail encounter. Within my brand, each of my hair accessories is named after the world’s most celebrated love songs. Furthermore, every piece is elegantly presented in a handmade box, infused with the delightful scent of exquisite Hermes perfume. To add a touch of heartfelt sentiment, a small love poem accompanies each accessory, serving as a heartfelt gesture for brides who might be struggling to find the perfect words on their big day. Remarkably, I’ve been told that several brides have found solace in these poems during their weddings, making it a cherished part of their special day.

In the world of bridal fashion, trends are constantly evolving. How do you stay ahead of these trends while maintaining your brand’s identity?

A: I dare to say, “I don’t.” Instead, I listen intently to my brides; they are my living trend reports. In this ever-evolving world where time brings change and fashion adapts, so do the requirements for bridal accessories. Lately, I’ve keenly observed a prevailing trend favoring the delicate, minimalistic, yet undeniably sophisticated approach.

Handmade craftsmanship is a hallmark of your brand. Can you walk us through the process of creating one of your signature bridal accessories?

A: I prefer not to confine myself to a single design. My creative process involves crafting a headpiece, gauging the reaction from my followers. If it resonates with them and becomes a hit, I may consider making one more, but that’s the extent of it. Once these creations are sold, they become exclusive and one-of-a-kind.

Ultimately, every bride aspires to adorn herself with something that is truly unique and holds a special significance. My commitment to nature-inspired styles remains a consistent thread in all of my creations, offering brides that distinct touch of natural beauty.

Sustainability is an important aspect of many businesses today. How does Elementi Atelier incorporate sustainable practices into its production and shipping processes?

A: I seldom rely on machinery; instead, I find solace in the art of hand stitching, sewing, and beading. This hands-on approach grants me a profound sense of control and an intimate connection with each piece I create.

In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, Elementi’s packaging is crafted from recycled paper, and every mailer we use is biodegradable. We believe in taking conscious steps to reduce our environmental footprint and preserve the beauty of our planet.

Your Instagram account (@elementiatelier) showcases stunning visuals. How has social media played a role in growing your brand and connecting with brides?

A: My intention for the @elementiatelier account is to curate it as a mood board and a source of inspiration. I frequently share images of wedding gowns, accessories, and creative ideas aimed at enhancing your special day and making it even more memorable.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of being a part of a bride’s special day through your creations?

A: Elementi offers a wide range of services, including reconstruction, and one particular experience stands out vividly in my memory. On this occasion, we took a broken heirloom, a great-grandmother’s brooch, and transformed it into a mesmerising headband.

However, the experience that remains etched in my heart is the creation of a bridal garter for one of my brides-to-be using a man’s tie. This unique piece held a poignant significance as it symbolized the absence of her beloved grandfather, who had intended to escort her down the aisle but sadly passed away during the Covid pandemic. She reached out to me with her ideas, and just a month later, a beautiful dark navy garter was crafted, which she proudly wore on her special day.

Elementi Atelier’s work exudes elegance and sophistication. Can you share some tips for brides-to-be on choosing the perfect bridal accessories to complement their wedding attire?

A: I often tell my brides, “This day is all about you, and you have the freedom to wear whatever speaks to your heart. If you dream of adorning your hair with Carrie Bradshaw’s bird, let’s make it happen! Nobody should dictate what’s appropriate on your wedding day; it’s your moment of celebration.”

However, while I embrace your unique vision, I also stress the importance of choosing pieces that align with your comfort needs. A wedding day can be long and tiring, so if you opt for a garter, it should feel comfortably snug without being too tight. Similarly, for a headpiece, we aim for a design that minimizes hair-pulling and weight, ensuring you feel at ease throughout your special day.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

A: Our world is truly an astonishing place, brimming with endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. I encourage you to savor as much of it as possible. It could be as simple as visiting a nearby village in your own city, enjoying a leisurely cup of tea while soaking in the local charm. Alternatively, you can pack your bags and embark on the adventure of a lifetime, venturing across oceans and continents. No matter where you choose to go, the aim is to broaden your horizons, to expand your understanding of the world.

Yet, from my own personal experiences, Cuba, and more specifically Havana, holds a special place in my heart. There’s a profound sentiment that words can’t quite capture when you walk along streets that seem frozen in the 1950s. The people, their resilience, and their expression of freedom with unwavering determination are truly inspiring. The music that fills the air, the vibrant culture, and, of course, the mojitos, are all part of the magic of Havana. However, I must advise that one should indulge in mojitos cautiously; they can be quite potent!

Looking ahead, what exciting developments or projects can we expect from Elementi Atelier in the near future?

A: I really can’t answer this. Elementi Atelier continues to astonish me with each passing day. It’s a perpetual journey of discovery, forging fresh connections, and weaving new stories. My fervent hope is to maintain this dynamic and ever-evolving essence that keeps every day filled with surprises and new adventures.

In the realm of fashion and artistry, there exists a remarkable synergy, where creativity blossoms into breathtaking pieces that not only adorn the body but also tell compelling stories. Today, we have the privilege of delving into the captivating world of Clare Haggas, a visionary artist and the founder of a brand that seamlessly marries British heritage, exquisite design, and environmental consciousness.

Clare Haggas, driven by an unbridled passion for painting, embarked on a journey that has not only redefined luxury in the fashion industry but has also become a beacon of hope for those seeking inspiration and resilience in their own lives. Her remarkable scarves, adorned with her original artwork, are more than just fashion accessories; they are vibrant canvases that narrate tales of her personal journey, her love for the British countryside, and her unwavering commitment to both artistry and the environment.

In this exclusive interview, Clare opens her heart to share her artistic evolution, her commitment to sustainability, and the profound impact her brand has had on individuals worldwide. Join us as we step into the enchanting world of Clare Haggas, where creativity meets purpose, and fashion transcends into art.

What inspired you to start your brand, and how has that initial vision evolved over the years?

I’ve always had a deep passion for painting, and each silk accessory, starting with the very first one I created for myself back in 2017, features my original artwork. However, it was during a critical turning point, while I was in rehab, that I realised the integral role art played in my recovery and life. My paintings primarily depict native British birds, flowers, and wildlife, all of which are emblematic of the British countryside. Thus, a fundamental and unwavering aspect of this brand is our commitment to creating everything as locally as possible, paying homage to the British nature that continues to inspire our brand.

Your brand takes pride in its authentic British identity. How do you infuse British elements into your designs, and why is this important to you?

At our core, we are genuinely British. Each of our designs resonates with the beauty of Britain, from the lush countryside to the vibrant wildlife. Every stroke of my brush captures tradition and nature, celebrating game birds, hunting dogs, and equine pursuits. Incorporating British elements is a way to honor our heritage, preserving timeless traditions against a silk backdrop, almost like windows opening onto our remarkable countryside.

The meticulous attention to detail in your scarves is remarkable. Could you share some behind-the-scenes insights into the rigorous process of creating these masterpieces?

The journey of each accessory begins with vivid and intricate artwork, often combining multiple paintings to achieve the perfect level of detail. For each original piece of artwork, I typically begin with a sketch of a bird, animal, or plant, sometimes based on exceptional photography or something I’ve encountered on the farm or in the garden. I have a fondness for watercolor pencils, so I invest considerable time in building up each piece to make the colours as vivid as possible, occasionally using acrylic paint as well. Once the original painting is complete, it undergoes digital scanning, and we dedicate weeks to adjusting colors, contrast, and brightness to adapt them for silk. The scarf design then comes to life, featuring flowers or wildlife from my other paintings, with the specifics varying depending on the scarf’s size.

Your commitment to not raising the RRP of the silk range despite increased production costs is admirable. How do you balance luxury with affordability, and what motivates this decision?

While prices are currently rising across the board, from packaging to materials, and with the introduction of the more expensive double-sided silk, I believe it’s essential to pass on these costs to the end consumer. This ensures that even during challenging times, they can still indulge in a touch of luxury.

The Spring/Summer 2023 Collection introduces double-sided scarves, a first in the UK. What inspired you to innovate in this way, and what challenges did you encounter during the development process?

As a luxury brand, my aim has always been to provide the highest quality products to my customers. Silk scarves are versatile accessories with numerous ways to tie and style, but it often requires skill to conceal the white underside of a single-sided scarf. I wanted everyone to effortlessly wear these pieces without investing hours in learning how to tie them, which is why I was driven to create double-sided scarves. Over the past two years, I dedicated my efforts to developing this new printing process, which presented its share of challenges. Achieving perfect silk penetration, ensuring colors do not bleed, and maintaining vibrancy on both sides proved to be a technical challenge on such delicate fabric. However, the time and effort invested were worth it, as the new scarves offer stunning versatility and eliminate the need to conceal a white underside.

Each piece appears to tell a story. Could you share the inspiration behind one of your favorite designs and the emotions you hope it evokes in the wearer?

In Spring 2024, I will be unveiling a new design that is particularly close to my heart. “Soul Mates” and “Watching Over Me” are two paintings dedicated to my late husband, Will, who sadly passed away in late 2022. Many believe that robins, featured in “Watching Over Me,” and swallows from “Soul Mates,” are spirits returning to visit us. I combined these two pieces into one design to pay tribute to Will and offer something to my customers so they can feel their late loved ones are always with them.

How do you ensure that your brand remains sustainable and environmentally responsible throughout the manufacturing process?

I have always prioritized working with local artisans, and every silk accessory is crafted by a local company, reducing our carbon footprint as much as possible. By fostering a circular economy, we ensure that our scarves are timeless and enduring, reflecting our commitment to both artistry and the environment. Additionally, my love for endangered birds and wildlife is reflected in my artwork, aiming to raise awareness of environmental issues and promote their conservation.

Your scarves are known for their vibrant colours. How do you select the colour palettes for each collection, and do you have any personal favourites?

Color is a defining characteristic of my art. The palette for each collection draws inspiration from the ever-changing hues of the British countryside, reflecting the seasons and wildlife. We blend vibrant tones and often include contrasting borders to make elements of the artwork stand out. Choosing these palettes is a meticulous process, with each shade evoking emotions and storytelling, while also considering the season of the collection. For Autumn/Winter designs, I often opt for warmer, nature-inspired tones like deep forest greens. In Spring/Summer, vibrant colors such as bright blues or the turquoise of summer seas may take center stage, and occasionally, neon hues find their way into my designs. As for personal favorites, I must say that navy is incredibly versatile, suiting most skin tones and being suitable for all seasons. It’s a timeless and classic color that effortlessly complements other shades.

As a founder, how do you balance creativity and business acumen to successfully grow your brand?

This brand has always been a celebration of artistry, resilience, and recovery, mirroring my personal journey and resonating with those who appreciate unique, cherished pieces and a brand that stands for something deeper. Balancing creativity and business acumen involves nurturing my creative vision while strategically aligning it with customer preferences. I maintain a close relationship with my followers and customers, seeking their input on preferences, changes they’d like to see, and even suggestions for future designs.

Your scarves are cherished accessories for many. Could you share a heartwarming customer story that exemplifies the impact your brand has had on people’s lives?

I receive countless personal and heartfelt messages from customers daily, and when I attend various Game and Equine shows, customers often approach me with their stories. At this year’s Cheltenham Festival, a gentleman from the United States traveled a long way to meet me. He shared how my openness about my recovery journey on social media had inspired him to overcome his struggles with drinking. He is now over two years sober and proudly wearing one of my iconic pheasant ties. It’s incredibly humbling to hear stories like this. Many individuals dealing with addiction fear judgment, discrimination, and social isolation. My goal is to have a positive impact on my customers and followers, not only by bringing joy through accessories but also by using my platform to be open and honest about addiction.

Collaborations often play a significant role in brand growth. Are there any dream collaborations you’d love to explore in the future?

I would be honoured to collaborate with a high-end luxury fashion house. As a devoted fan of Gucci, I couldn’t think of a better match. Creating a silk scarf featuring my artwork with such an iconic brand would be a tremendous honour.

Your designs often capture the essence of British culture and nature. How does your personal connection to your heritage influence your creative process?

My designs are a direct reflection of my deep connection to British culture and nature. My personal heritage plays a pivotal role in shaping my creative process. Growing up surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Gloucestershire, experiencing the rich history, and living in the Lincolnshire Wolds have all enriched my work. When I moved to live on my beloved Will’s Lincolnshire farm, he encouraged me to view nature from a different perspective, urging me to engage in activities like shooting, fishing, and observing the diverse wildlife that exists there.

The fashion industry is constantly evolving. How do you stay ahead of trends while maintaining the timeless appeal of your brand?

We have evolved organically, prioritizing our core values of luxury, heritage, and longevity over chasing fleeting trends. My main focus is on maintaining our signature look and feel while incorporating subtle updates, often through color palettes that align with the season.

What advice would you give to aspiring designers and entrepreneurs looking to build their own authentic and successful brand in the fashion industry?

I believe the key is to embrace your unique voice and vision. In such a competitive market, authenticity is paramount. Nurture your true passions, and when you encounter challenges, refocus on those passions as they will motivate you to persevere.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Bora Bora is probably at the top of my list. The dazzling lagoons and skies there would provide a fresh perspective for my artwork. Bali also looks absolutely amazing. I’ve never been to either place, so gaining inspiration from different cultures and experiencing stunning natural landscapes is definitely at the top of my bucket list.
