Ahead of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop on 11th August, the vibrant city of New York is THE place to be to not just celebrate this life-affirming genre, but every aspect of the Big Apple’s legendary music scene from hip-hop and rock ‘n’ roll to Broadway. Explore it all with a music lover’s guide to New York.

A Music Lover's Guide To New York
New York at sunset

New York City is a city that lives and breathes music. It is known for its rich musical heritage and it’s home to some of the best clubs, venues, and record stores in the world.

The genre of hip-hop celebrates its 50th anniversary this week. Way back when a pivotal moment initiated a brand new genre as well as a cultural shift.

On 11 August 1973, a young DJ changed the world forever and the genesis of hip-hop provided the disaffected youth of Harlem and the Bronx in New York to have a voice.

DJ Kool Herc took to the decks at a birthday party in the Bronx and tried a new technique. This technique was using ‘breaks’ to interrupt the flow of the record that was playing.

Using a mixer and two turntables to overlap and seamlessly play breakbeat after breakbeat after breakbeat, caused a sonic revolution which was completely groundbreaking at the time.

Over time, other elements such as break dancing, rapping, Graffiti art and DJing, all formed part of the ever-evolving hip-hop culture.

So, to commemorate that seminal 50th anniversary, our Music Editor Emma Harrison rounds up the must-visit spots for any music lover to enjoy whilst in New York.

Stay in a music-themed hotel

What could be better to keep things on brand than to stay in a music-themed hotel? Enter the stage left the dazzling Hard Rock Hotel in the heart of Times Square.

This is the ultimate epitome of a pitch-perfect slice of the Big Apple – this stylish hotel is positively steeped in music history.

Music memorabilia adorns the walls of the reception, the bar and other shared areas which includes a spectacular butter yellow Max Azria Atelier dress once worn by Alicia Keys, song lyrics, striking images of musicians from both the past and present like James Brown, guitars from Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones and more.

Budding musicians can also hire guitars to channel their own Jimi Hendrix or Janis Joplin where you can rock out in the sanctuary of your room to your heart’s content with the hotel’s Hard Rock’s Sound of Your Stay experience.

Hard Rock by name, Hard Rocking by nature! If you prefer to be a captivated audience member instead, you can enjoy live performances from both local, national and international artists.

Keep those peepers peeled, as you might well spot world-renowned stars like Halsey who has performed in the hotel’s basement.

Located just around the corner from iconic music landmarks including Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center and Broadway.

It’s also a great place to grab a drink (the consumption of music-themed cocktails is strictly obligatory!) and try some of the delicious options at the ‘Sessions’ restaurant which is where you will find the majority of the hotel’s vast collection of music memorabilia.

If you are looking for the best place to enjoy steak in the city – head to the hotel’s NYY Steak, an elegant wood-panelled restaurant down on the ground floor. The steak and other dishes are simply sublime and are complimented by the exceptional service too.

For a lighter bite, check out the mezze options at RT60, a stylish bar and lounge way up on the 34th floor. They also offer a fantastic range of cocktails, including New York, New York, a bourbon, vermouth and grapefruit bitters blend that Ole Blue Eyes would surely have given his seal of approval.

Naturally, the rooms follow suit with the music memorabilia, you’ll find a music soundwave above your bed and each room has a musician emblazoned on the glass door that leads to the marble-drenched bathroom.

The dynamic RayZa’s energy levels and knowledge were second to none. He also performed a freestyle rap or two and was incredibly engaging and enthusiastic which helped elevate the tour experience.

Similar to the Aman, the theme of jazz is everywhere – even the well-crafted cocktails are named after songs from the celebrated genre.

Try to time your visit on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday where you can enjoy stunning live jazz recitals that will blow you away.

Radio City Music Hall

New York is a dream destination all year round, but at Christmas, a visit to the Radio City Music Hall is simply unmissable!

And the best of the rest….

This is a city that never sleeps, so we are sure you will want to carve out as much time in order to maximise your schedule. Here are some of Emma’s favourite things to do while in NYC.

See some incredible art

New York is an unrelenting cultural hub and its reputation for its world-class museums and art galleries are second-to-none.

If you only visit one museum, make it the MoMa AKA the Museum of Modern Art in Midtown Manhattan which houses a collection of more than 200,000 artworks of every variety.

Get your stroll on and pay tribute to the late great John Lennon

If you want a little oasis in the city, head on over to Central Park and explore even a smidge of the 843-acre park.

As the world increasingly focuses on sustainable and renewable energy sources, one technology that has been steadily gaining popularity is solar street lighting. Solar street lighting utilizes natural light from the sun to provide illumination to outdoor spaces, saving energy and reducing costs for municipalities and residents. Check out tenkoo solar lights for some of the best solar lighting options on the market.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss the many benefits of investing in solar street lighting for your home, whether that’s from Olympia Lighting or elsewhere. From safety and convenience to environmental and financial savings, there is a lot to consider when choosing solar lighting solutions for your outdoor spaces.

Increased Safety for Pedestrians

In areas where traditional street lighting is unavailable or inadequate, solar street lights provide a reliable and sustainable alternative. With the ability to operate independently of the electrical grid, solar street lights can be installed in remote locations where traditional street lights are not practical. This is particularly important for pedestrian safety in areas with high foot traffic, such as college campuses, residential areas, and commercial districts.

Solar street lights provide a well-lit environment that allows pedestrians to safely navigate their surroundings, reducing the risk of accidents and improving overall safety. Furthermore, solar street lights do not require wiring or trenching, which minimizes the risk of tripping hazards and reduces the overall cost of installation. As a result, solar street lights are an excellent solution for improving pedestrian safety in communities around the world.

Cost-Effective and Energy-Efficient

Solar street lights are a great option to meet both of these criteria. Not only do they rely on renewable energy sources, but they also require minimal maintenance and have a long lifespan. Additionally, solar street lights eliminate the need for costly and environmentally harmful underground wiring, reducing both installation and maintenance costs.

By choosing solar street lights, cities and municipalities can save money on energy bills while simultaneously reducing their carbon footprint. As renewable energy continues to become more affordable and accessible, solar street lights are a smart choice for the future of public lighting.

Low Maintenance Requirements

Unlike traditional street lights that need to be connected to the electrical grid, solar street lights are self-sufficient and do not require any external power source or wiring. This means that once installed, they can operate autonomously and require little to no maintenance. Solar panels, batteries, and LED lights are all designed to last for many years, with minimal maintenance needed.

Additionally, since solar street lights do not have any moving parts, they are less prone to malfunctions, breakages, or wear and tear, further reducing the need for maintenance. The low maintenance requirements of solar street lights make them a cost-effective solution for lighting up streets, highways, and public spaces, while also reducing the burden on maintenance crews and the associated costs.

Environmentally Friendly Lighting Solution

The need for environmentally friendly lighting solutions has never been more pressing, and solar street lights represent a promising solution. These lights operate using clean, renewable energy from the sun, which reduces reliance on traditional grid electricity and lowers carbon emissions.

Unlike traditional street lights that require electrical wiring, solar street lights are self-contained and require no external power source, making them ideal for remote or off-grid locations. With advancements in solar technology, modern solar street lights are capable of providing bright and efficient lighting that is comparable to traditional street lights.

Additionally, solar street lights require minimal maintenance and have a long lifespan, making them a cost-effective and sustainable lighting solution. As we look to the future, it is clear that solar street lights will play an important role in illuminating our communities while promoting a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

Conclusion

Solar street lights offer a range of benefits that make them a smart choice for lighting streets, pathways, and public spaces. Not only do they reduce energy consumption and emissions, but they also require minimal maintenance and provide reliable lighting even in remote locations.

Additionally, solar street lights can improve safety and security by illuminating areas that were previously dark and hard to see. As the world looks for ways to reduce its carbon footprint and move towards more sustainable practices, solar street lights are an excellent example of how technology can be used to create a brighter, cleaner, and more efficient future.

If you don’t know where we’ve been, how do you know where we’re going?

A couple of weekends ago, we dived headfirst into a historical extravaganza that set our hearts racing to the sounds of swords clashing.
We went to the jaw-dropping, pulse-pounding, and drama-infused live event, ‘The War of The Roses,’ hosted exclusively at the enchanting Warwick Castle.

You’ve still got time to go (it ends September 3rd 2023) so prepare to be transported back in time, as they unravel the secrets, betrayals, and heartaches of this captivating and pivitol, period in English history.

Picture this… the grandeur of Warwick Castle, with its ancient walls standing tall, acting as a silent witness to the tumultuous events of The War of The Roses. This epic clash between two powerful houses, the Lancasters and the Yorks, is brought to life in a show that rivals the greatest tales of knights, kings, and queens.

Upon entering, you’re encouraged to choose a side. Fences adorned with white and red roses. The atmosphere is electrifying, as you file into your side of the jousting arena along with your fellow countrypeople, you hear the horses snorting in anticipation. The attention to detail is brilliant, with period-appropriate tents, weaponry, and even a giant trebuchet (which you can see in action in a separate show!).

As the scene begins, the audience is summoned to use their respective calls of “white rose!” or “red rose!”. As we shout, the stage is preparing for a battle like no other, with skilled actors and horses clad in armour, prepared to bring history to life. Swords gleaming, banners fluttering, and hearts pounding – the stage is set for an act of intrigue and suspense.

The performance begins, and we are instantly transported to a world of political scheming and personal rivalries. The acting is nothing short of stellar, with emotional performances that feel incredibly real. The chemistry between the actors is palpable, drawing you into their world, making you forget you’re witnessing a re-enactment (I always wanted to be a theatre reviewer and imagined them reading my glowing review of their skills, so I took this shit seriously, okay!).

Not only is the acting top-notch (wink), but the battle choreography is also a breath-taking sight to behold. The clash of swords, the thundering hooves of horses, and the cries of victory and defeat reverberate through the arena. You can almost feel the ground shake beneath you as the jousting enemies clash.

Between battle scenes, the audience is treated to moments of moving the story on. You are watching a gripping historical drama unfold before your eyes. The political manoeuvrings, the secrets, and the LIES (RoY- we know what you did in the Tower of London! I couldn’t help myself and shouted, “Don’t trust him!!!!!!”).

The War of The Roses LIVE event is a feast for all senses. The costumes lend an air of authenticity that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine. The music, specially composed for the event, accentuates the emotions, heightening the drama and transporting you further into the past.

As the event reaches its climactic conclusion, the emotions run high, and the two houses come together to create The Tudors. They host a party, and the horses and riders perform tricks and stunts to loud and melodic joyful beats.

There’s no denying that ‘The War of The Roses’ live event at Warwick Castle is an unmissable experience for history buffs, theatre enthusiasts, and anyone who craves excitement.

So, if you find yourself yearning for an immersive historical journey, make sure you get to ‘The War of The Roses’ live event at Warwick Castle. It’s an experience that will leave you under no illusion of the real story, explain how The Tudors came about, and fill you with an excitement you can’t explain.

Oh, oh, and, fucking hell as if I nearly forgot… Warwick Castle has MULTIPLE Costas on site.

You’re welcome.

Book tickets to enjoy the whole of Warwick Castle, it’s like a theme park with food and drink options, places to stay, and plenty of re-enactments.

Looking for a stylish and reliable timepiece that won’t drain your wallet? Welcome to our comprehensive guide on “What to Look for in an Affordable Watch.” In a world of countless watch options, finding the perfect balance between quality, style, and affordability can be a daunting task. Fret not! We’re here to simplify the process and equip you with valuable insights to make an informed decision. Whether you’re a horology enthusiast or a casual shopper, this guide will walk you through the key aspects to consider when hunting for the ideal affordable watch.

Craftsmanship and Build Quality

The first and foremost aspect to consider in an affordable watch is its craftsmanship and build quality. Affordable doesn’t have to mean cheaply made. In fact, some of the best affordable watches on the market are made with the same quality materials as their high-end counterparts.

So, look for watches that utilize high-quality materials such as stainless steel, durable plastic, or genuine leather straps. A watch with a solid build not only enhances its longevity but also adds a touch of sophistication to your overall look.

Design and Aesthetics

An affordable watch should not compromise on style. Choose a design that resonates with your personal taste and complements your wardrobe. Whether you prefer a minimalist, classic, or sporty look, there is a wide variety of affordable watch designs available to suit every preference. Opt for a versatile design that seamlessly transitions from casual to formal occasions.

Water Resistance

A crucial feature often overlooked in affordable watches is water resistance. While you may not plan on deep-sea diving with your timepiece, it’s essential to choose a watch that can withstand everyday activities, such as washing hands or getting caught in the rain. Look for watches with a water resistance rating of at least 30 meters to ensure durability and longevity.

Functionality and Complications

Affordable watches can offer an array of functions and complications beyond basic timekeeping. Some watches feature additional features like chronographs, date displays, or even built-in compasses. Consider your lifestyle and preferences when selecting a watch with the right balance of functionality and complications that cater to your needs.

Strap Options

The versatility of an affordable watch can be further enhanced by interchangeable straps. Many watches come with easily swappable straps, allowing you to customize your look effortlessly. From stainless steel bracelets to leather bands or even NATO straps, the ability to switch out straps provides endless styling possibilities.

Brand Reputation and Warranty

While searching for an affordable timepiece, take a moment to research the best affordable watch brands and their customer reviews. Established brands often maintain their quality standards even in their budget-friendly offerings. Additionally, a manufacturer’s warranty indicates the brand’s confidence in its product’s durability. Opt for watches that come with a warranty, ensuring peace of mind and long-term satisfaction.

Price vs. Value

It’s important to strike the right balance between price and value when choosing an affordable watch. Assess the features and quality the watch offers in relation to its price tag. Compare different models, read reviews, and consider the overall package the watch provides. Remember that a higher price doesn’t always equate to better value, and a well-researched purchase can lead to a satisfying investment.

Conclusion

In conclusion, finding an affordable watch that meets your style, functional, and budgetary requirements is a rewarding endeavor. By considering factors such as craftsmanship, timekeeping accuracy, design, water resistance, functionality, strap options, brand reputation, warranty, and overall value, you can confidently select a watch that complements your lifestyle and stands as a testament to your discerning taste.

Ibiza is the ultimate social chameleon. Want to dance until dawn? She’s here for it. Sunrise yoga more your thing? There’s nowhere better to try it. I’ve experienced Ibiza in all her guises. A cava-laden hen ‘do, a culinary-led couples holiday, a soul-enriching yoga retreat – and every time I love her a little bit more. So naturally, I jumped at the chance to return to the White Isle, this time for a heady dose of (just one) of the things Ibiza does best – pure, unadulterated hedonism.

Amàre Beach Hotel is nestled in San Antonio Bay with a sprawling, white-washed complex that encapsulates the bohemian vibe that’s typical of Ibiza. It’s less than 10 minutes away from San Antonio itself by water taxi and a 35-minute drive from the airport.

So let’s start with the credentials. There are three lounging areas – rooftop, main pool and beach – where DJs and live singers provide mellow Balearic beats and higher-tempo tunes as the sun goes down.

There’s also a 24-hour gym offering complimentary yoga and HIIT classes on alternate days, as well as a lush Germaine de Capuccini spa with soothing treatments to lull even the most stressed guest into a state of calm. Perfect for weary travellers.

But, let’s face it, it’s hard to be stressed at Amàre, with every convenience catered for and a real focus on comfort and ease. Sit back and relax on a plush sun lounger while attentive staff deliver tasty delights like melt-in-the-mouth sushi and expertly-crafted Aperol spritzes.

Our package included access to ‘The One’ lounge, which soon became my happy place. As well as tasty snacks – think mini salads, savoury bites, brownies, pastries, fruit and cute little cakes – there’s an open bar where you can help yourself to coffee, juices or an afternoon G&T if the mood strikes. With views out to the sea and across the glistening pool area, it’s the perfect place to take a minute to unwind, refuel or share a moment with your fellow holiday goers.

In terms of the culinary offering, Amàre excels. The breakfast and dinner buffet goes far beyond the usual offering, with station after station of local and international cuisine. Pan con tomate – a local dish of freshly baked bread topped simply with olive oil and garlic and juicy grated tomato – became my breakfast obsession.

For those in search of a little luxury, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant offers stunning views and a menu crafted by Michelin-star chef Mauricio Giovanini. Hayaca serves up extra special dishes like citrus-infused ceviche and tender wagyu steak for a fine dining experience.

Of course, balance is key and our time at Amàre wasn’t all sushi and pool-side spritzes. One of the highlights of the hotel is the stunning views from its rooftop pool, situated next to a terrace that’s perfect for a morning yoga session. After a night of indulgence and a quick trip to the San Antonio strip that involved a rather questionable variation on a Long Island Iced Tea, a gentle and calming yoga session was most welcome.

If you want to venture outside of the hotel, there’s plenty to discover. Ibiza is legendary for its stunning beaches and hidden coves – and there’s no better way to discover these than by boat. We boarded the Salvador Ibiza and had the whole boat to ourselves, monopolising the playlist with feel-good tunes and feasting on Spanish tortilla and rosé wine – hedonism at its peak.

There’s also Ibiza Old Town within easy reach, where you can discover the more cultural side of the island. During our visit, there was a Medieval Market taking place, a spectacle typical of this area.

Dorthraki-style men and women wearing tribal face paint and feather headdresses paraded through the streets beating drums and calling out to the crowds, while market sellers – always in character – looked on from behind stalls offering gifts and trinkets, from fine cheeses and home-made liqueurs to vintage-style jewellery and hand-crafted leather bags. After a little retail therapy, there are plenty of spots along the cobbled streets where visitors can enjoy a few sundowners and escape the afternoon heat.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m here for wellness and balance, but sometimes letting loose can be the best form of self-care. I urge you to find a few days to savour the indulgent food, enjoy the extra-long massage and dance all night under the sunshine. It sure does feel good.

I’ve been binge watching Maritime Masters, on Discovery+, for those not in the know, it’s a sneak peek behind the scenes of luxury super yacht, the Scenic Eclipse as it takes to the seas delivering guests an extraordinary, luxe travel experience like no other.

The first episode sees the Scenic Eclipse begin its epic voyage to Antarctica from San Diego. The episode also introduces and follows the ship’s ‘Masters’, the dedicated experts who lead the voyages. The Masters include VP Oceans Hotel Operations, Chef Tom Goetter. Goetter who oversees up to ten dining locations on board the yacht, managing chefs, and menus from producers to table is a handsome, mild mannered German with oodles of experience under his belt.

Goetter is no stranger to fame, he competed on “Top Chef Germany” in 2018 where he finished as a finalist. He trained under Thomas Keller and his team in Napa Valley and has travelled the world extensively, specialising in international cuisine with experience working at Michelin-starred restaurants, high-end hotels and ultra-luxury cruise ships. Since then, he has been the Executive Chef for the Scenic Eclipse, a six-star world’s first Discovery Yacht, serving a variety of cuisines, including Modern Asian, Asian Street Food, French and Italian. He features heavily in the show, alongside his team, innovating and showcasing unique, memorable creations.

House of Coco caught up with Goetter to get the skinny on what goes on in the kitchen of a super yacht and how he manages to switch things up while still deliver quality cuisine at sea.

The key to delivering exceptional dishes comes down to the preparation. Goetter and his team are at sea for around nine months of the year, so it requires lots of planning. “For Scenic I spent time on a river ship in Cologne where I created menu cycles, you need to have lots of recipes. We started with 3,000 and now have 5,000.It’s a complex process, our longest menu cycle is 30 days as we don’t usually have a guest on for longer than that. I calculate each dish down to the gram so we can prepare six months in advance and start sourcing the produce.” The menu reflects the destination, and this is mostly due to highlighting local produce which quite often is the biggest challenge. “Moving around is hard, you are relying on suppliers and resources on the ground which can change so you have to be creative and flexible.”

Goetter is known for his creativity, he takes inspiration from people and places. He says, “I travel to lots of places and listen to people from mothers to street food stand holders, they are all full of knowledge and that’s how you learn something.” Unlike some chefs, his kitchen is somewhere you can speak up. “I lived in Bali and was recently in the Scenic kitchen cooking a Balinese dish. The dishwasher in our kitchen is from Bali and he tried it and said that’s no good. I said cook it with us, teach us so we can get it right.” Some chefs wouldn’t have taken too well to criticism, but Goetter is free spirited, he wants to hear others input into the project so the food quality is excellent. He concludes “I don’t use fear in my kitchen, when you mentor people and give them a level of respect they are loyal and want to work for you and that’s important.” Which probably explains why all his staff returned to his kitchen post covid. I can tell just from our chat that Goetter is one of the good guys, someone you’d want in your team.

Having been on Top Chef, Goetter is used to having a camera in the kitchen and it doesn’t faze him. He thinks Maritime Masters has turned the chefs in his team into ambassadors and given them a platform to showcase their skills.

Goetter and his team want guests to have a culinary experience like no other. He says, “I love it when a guest gets on the yacht with prefixed ideas about a particular food or dish, then tries it and changes their mind. We want our food to make an impact, the experience comes when guests change the way they would normally eat and appreciate something new.”

The culinary ethos on Scenic is rooted in sustainability and innovation. Goetter tells me, “Sourcing local should be obvious, it’s extremely important to be sustainable. We don’t want to waste food on the ship, so we recreate dishes out of single produce. For example, we might take a carrot, dehydrate the carrot skin and use it again in another dish. If we see strawberries turning, then we will make something using them. We have sustainability competitions on the ship to see who can create the most innovative dish so there is no waste. We also grow our own herbs on board and produce our own fresh water.”

When he’s not onboard the Scenic you’ll find Goetter exploring tastes around the world. He says, “I eat where I am, I always go where the locals go, that way you get the best food. If I’m in Japan, I’m at the fish market or the spice market in Dubai. I love street food.” Goetter is travelling when we speak, he landed in Germany a couple of hours before our interview and is off on another trip the following day, sourcing more inspiration and ideas to make sure his cuisine remains ‘fresh’.

I can’t wait to see what Goetter gets up to in the next series of Maritime Masters. To follow his journey download Maritime Masters on Discovery+.

You may also want to choose between a fixed and a swivel rack. Fixed designs, just as their name suggests, stay in place and are often affordable. However, with fixed racks, it can be challenging to retrieve your boat. On the other hand, swivel racks make it easy for you to load and unload your boat, thus helping to prevent any damage from occurring. Therefore, select your boat hardware parts mindfully and get the best ones for your boat.

1.Construction

Just like the boat parts, it’s imperative to consider the material used to construct your rack. You can choose one that is made of anodized aluminium although others materials can be stainless steel or aluminium. However, anodized aluminium is the most preferred if you are looking for a construction that can prevent corrosion. Additionally, you may decide to add a brushed finish on your rack to prevent scuff marks, fingerprints, and scratches, which is an excellent way to keep your rack looking new throughout. A brushed finish is also an excellent value addition to your rack as it enhances its durability and attractiveness.

2.Boat Type

When looking for a rack design ideal for your boat, you’ll realize that there are racks specifically meant to accommodate some kinds of boats. While you may want to consider a universal construction design, it’s essential to go for a construction that is tailored to your boats to ensure they are safely and securely stored. If you intend to have more than a single boat, you can go for a combo design or you may opt to construct a single one for each of your boats.

3.Fixed v. Swivel

4.Securing the Boat

Finding a fit that is ideal for your boat can be difficult if you have a static set of racks. In these kinds of cases, adjustable-width forks become significantly crucial in helping you identify the perfect fit for your boat. You can also consider other ways to secure your boat such as the levered clamps, bungee cords, and telescoping arms. A choice of one of these options is dependent on your preferences.

5.Attaching the Rack

An important consideration, if you’re deciding on the kind of rack that is suitable for your boat, is its attachment to the tower. While there are racks that only work on their manufacturers’ towers, there are also universal racks that will fit various towers. Make sure you establish what kind you have and see if it’s consistent with the tower available.

Final Word

Now that you know what aspects to look out for in a rack, you are more than ready to find yourself the perfect fit. There are numerous racks available out there, all you need to do is identify what will work best for you. You may also choose to design one for yourself and see how best it works with your boats.
