We have big plans when it comes to travel in 2021. Like most of you, last year was really supposed to be our year until Coronavirus scuppered our international travel game. With the UK still in lockdown (who knows what’s happening anymore!) and the list of travel corridor countries shrinking little by little every week, we’re taking time to reflect and draw up our hit list, for when we’re good to go.

The Balearic Islands are well known for the beautiful shores of Majorca, and its naughty little sister, Ibiza – but Menorca (the second biggest) rarely gets the airtime it deserves. We were lucky enough to discover the island before lockdown hit, and it has definitely become our favourite hidden Spanish hotspot.

Menorca has surprisingly rich history, from being discovered by the Vandals (violent Germanic explorers) in the 5th Century, to spending much of the 18th Century as a British Colony. Tourism boomed in the 1950s when package holidays became a thing, and the island has been enjoyed by holidayers from all around Europe, and the world, ever since.

The capital city Mahón is a destination in itself. It has one of the largest natural harbours in the world, with a length of almost six kilometres, a width of 1,200 metres and a depth of up to 30 metres – which probably explains the island’s spicy history through trading and invasions, and the city’s unique architecture makes it stand out from other Balearic cities like Palma or Ibiza Town.

The Pierre & Vacances Premium Residence Menorca Binibeca is a 4-star hotel on the cliffside overlooking the little seaside town of Binibeca Vel. Peace and quiet is served up by the bucket (the hotel is adult only which is a huge plus), as are the Pomadas – a very delicious blend of local Mahón gin with lemonade. Enjoy these from your room’s private terrace with the backdrop of those famous Mediterranean sunsets.

By day, catch the Balearic sun chilling poolside, or unwind in the hotel’s on-site spa. Suites come with their own private jacuzzi with a sea-view balcony where you could quite happily spend your whole time, but Menorca has a lot more on the menu than suns, spas and sangria.

Speaking of menu, we should probably mention the local cuisine. Fun fact, Menorca is reportedly the birthplace of one of the world’s most famous sauces – mayonnaise. The story goes that the Duke of Richelieu invented a quick garnish during a siege which ended being called mahonnaise, named after the capital city Mahón. Condiments aside, Menorca is well known for its perfect paellas and other exquisite seafood.

The restaurant Francesca Menorca overlooks the stunning beach at Cala Galdana – a picture perfect spot worthy of ‘wish you were here’ postcards, with turquoise water and pure white sands. The restaurant is known locally for serving up paella in dustbin-lid sized portions as well as fresh locally sourced salad dishes, making for a perfect lunch location. For dinner, check out Bodegas Binifadet, one of the most famous wineries on the island, with a restaurant complete with covered terrace overlooking the vineyards. Here they serve up more traditional dishes like steak tartare or Girona duck confit. It goes without saying that the wine pairing here is second to none.

If you are a frequent flyer, signing up for an airline reward scheme is a great idea. Whether it be jetting off for a city break in Europe, or traveling across the country to visit a family member, if you’re flying, you can also earn air miles.

However, since Covid-19 forced the world to a standstill, it made the aviation industry pause with it. In many parts of the world, only essential travel was permitted and the travel industry was in danger. Since things are slowly starting to recover, airlines are starting to entice travelers to fly again.

But, are airline rewards points still worth buying?

What are airline miles and credit card airline reward points?

If you are a frequent flyer, you can sign up for an airline reward system or loyalty programs. Most airlines have them, such as American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, which offer points and miles the more you fly with them.

These can then be redeemed for various perks, such as discounted flights, upgraded to first-class or business class, and sometimes hotel stays.

Also, some credit card offers include airline rewards. For example, the American Express credit card offers the availability to earn points that can be later exchanged for air miles. Meaning that you can earn points per purchase.

Using air miles in the current climate

Buying airline miles, even in the current climate, is usually safeif just kept in your account.

However, if you buy airline reward points, it is worth checking with the credit card companies or the airline to see how your points would be affected if anything happened.

Some credit cards also might have an expiry date as to when you can redeem your points.

Programs may have a small window of time in which you can use your points. This can be problematic as we are unsure as to when flights will resume more widely.

However, it’s good to be reassured that the rewards systems will still be there in the future. Don’t feel like you have to rush – travel hacking isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

What happens if the flight is canceled?

If an airline cancels your flight that was booked with points, they should offer the alternative of a refund for the points and any flight vouchers used, such as 2-for-1 companion tickets.

What is offered in recompense will vary between countries and airlines. You can read more about your options for the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

The final verdict on airline miles

Buying miles can still be a good idea, as you will have a better chance of making use of them post-pandemic – especially when airlines may have to introduce aggressive offers to entice the flying public back.

Our advice is to check with your credit card provider or airline to see what your points are worth and how they may be affected by the pandemic.

Whatever happens, we hope to see you back in the sky very soon.

With Brits having spent much of 2020 in lockdown, real life discovery and exploration for many will have seemed like a thing of the past with overseas travel plans having taken a back seat for much of this year.

However, while we may not be packing our bags and hitting the road this month, there is still plenty of opportunity to get lost in the beautiful, exotic backdrops of popular series on Netflix – that are helping to inspire our next travel adventures.

To help to find new ways to scratch that wanderlust itch, we’ve teamed up with youth travel provider, Topdeck Travel to discover how you can experience many of the popular Netflix shows for yourself when overseas travel opens up again next year.

Selling Sunset

Selling Sunset is the glamourous real estate reality that has taken Netflix’s audience by storm during months of lockdown. The reality TV show follows the highs and lows of life at the real estate agency, The Oppenheim Group as its team work to sell multi-million-dollar properties located in high end zip-codes. The uber-glitzy lifestyle of the show’s main characters and ‘realtors’ isn’t the only thing making viewers green with envy as they watch as scenes switch from sun-drenched LA boulevards to the serene views of the Hollywood hills. The Netflix hit takes its name from the infamous ‘Sunset Strip’, the 22-mile long road that stretches from West Hollywood through to the beaches of Malibu and provides any visitor with a glimpse into the lux lifestyle of the local residents.

Fancy experiencing sunset on LA’s boulevards? Get the Netflix experience with Topdeck’s California Calling tour – hitting the road from April 2021.

Travellers will be spoilt for choice with so many amazing sights and activities to try in the City of Angels. With a driving tour of Los Angeles, those heading on the trip will get to see the sights depicted in the Netflix show, including Beverly Hills’ Sunset Boulevard, the Luxurious Rodeo Drive, as well as being taken along the iconic Hollywood Hills. The trip will include entry to the Grand Canyon National Park, as well as a trip to Las Vegas – in a party bus!

Below Deck

Offering some much-needed escapism and travel fantasy, Below Deck follows the guests and crew of a super-yacht as it leisurely sails from one beautiful corner of the world to the next. Viewers of this Netflix addiction are transported to crystal clear oceans and breath taking, island beaches – it’s hard to comprehend how the drama that plays out between crew members is possible in such awe-inspiring settings. Whether its deep diving for lobster lunches in the Caribbean Sea or mooring for sunset cocktails in a picturesque harbour, each episode provides audiences with more than enough inspiration to pack a bag and set sail for adventures at sea.

Put the wind in your sails and breath in the sea with a sailing tour like no other with Topdeck on the Summer Fun and Sailing tour – Setting sail from May 2021

Travellers heading on this trip will experience a sun-soaked excursion like no other. The trip includes a visit to 13 countries with 3-nights spent on a boat sailing in Greece. Just like those depicted in Below Deck, those attending the trip will get to experience the high life with walking tours of Rome, Monaco, Venice and Munich – all in a single trip!

Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris is the story of a 22-year-old Social Media guru, who relocates to Europe to help bring an outdated marketing agency into the 21st century. This millennial take on ‘Sex on the City’ is set against a backdrop of charming, cobbled Parisian streets and boutique lined boulevards and oozes French culture from the opening episode. As the series continues, many of Paris’ iconic landmarks are bought into shot; from croissants by the River Seine to star-lit strolls in the shadows of the Eiffel Tower. The dreamy series has divided audiences since being added to Netflix, but one thing is for sure – this series is European city break wanderlust at its finest.

Get ready to explore the French capital like a local with the Essential Europe tour from Topdeck – soaking in the sights from May 2021.

Travellers will get to experience the unmissable sights of Paris depicted in the popular Netflix show. Not only will they get to see the quaint cafes and patisseries that make up Paris, but they’ll also be able to visit the iconic Louvre museum, the Champs Elysees and the Montparnasse observation tower – where they’ll be able to view the streets from above and see why they call the stunning destination ‘The City of Lights’!

Street Food ASIA

From the creators of ‘Chef’s Table’, this Netflix original documentary series embarks on a global journey, taking viewers around the streets of some of the world’s most vibrant cities, exploring the rich culture of street food. In one of the thirty-minute episodes, viewers will find themselves immersed in the characterful and colourful streets of Delhi in India to hear all about its signature street flavours that are deeply connected to the families and locals that live there. With a focus on the culinary scene within the city, the show explores India’s magnificent cocktail of flavours, as well as showcasing a spectacle of colourful textiles and spices that can be found in its many street markets. Anyone eager to break out of their lockdown routine and experience a fresh, exciting culture will be sure to be inspired by this look into local life and tantalising street food.

Delve into Delhi’s incredible culture on the Topdeck Namaste India tour – Exploring the awe-inspiring from April 2021.

On the trip, travellers will be given the opportunity to not just see this incredible city, but to really experience it. As India’s capital can be quite overwhelming, Topdeck’s experienced tour leaders will help guide travellers through the city to taste some of the city’s delectable culinary treats and weave through the craziness of cars, rickshaws, scooters, and people.

The trip will visit not only Delhi, but many of India’s amazing destinations and sights. Those attending the trip will be treated to watching the sunrise at the Taj Mahal, travel by local train from Jaipur to Jodhpur, head on a sunset cruise on Lake Pichola and visit the striking Ranakpur Temple.

One of the most frustrating parts of traveling is packing the suitcase for the trip. It’s hard to gauge if you’re packing too much or too little. Did I remember this, that, and the other thing? Do I roll my clothes, or fold them?

In general, traveling can be stressful. Travel blogs, like inspire4travel, can help ease those concerns with tips and tricks to make the experience go smoothly.

10 Tips for Packing the Most in Your Suitcase

Knowing a few packing hacks can also help reduce the stress of travel. Here are 10 tips for making packing easier:

1. Roll your clothes. Let’s end the debate. Rolling your clothes provides more room. Rolling does cause wrinkles, but most hotel rooms have irons.

2. Plan your daily outfits. Many people make the mistake of throwing every piece of clothing they like into one suitcase. Then, when they get to their destination, pulling an outfit together is a hassle. Planning your outfits saves suitcase room AND dress-stress.

3. Leave the liquids home; use bar-shaped toiletries. If you’re flying, most airplanes have strict rules regarding liquids. Skip trying to remember the liquid limits. Use bar shampoos and conditioners.

4. Pack heavier items at the bottom. This is a well-known hack. Pack heavier items, such as shoes, at the bottom of your suitcase. It will prevent the heavier items from making the suitcase tip over, or damaging fragile items.

5. Use a sunglasses case to store cell phone chargers. Phone chargers can break easily if left loose in the luggage. Putting them in a sunglasses case protects them, and makes it easier to find when you get settled in your destination.

6. Put a sticker on your luggage to help identify it quickly. Not many things in life are more awkward than the baggage carousel. At least one person always picks the wrong suitcase off the line. Putting a bright sticker, or other easily recognizable visual cue, can help get you out of the baggage claim without any awkwardness.

7. Create a packing inventory. Do you always forget at least one item when you pack for a trip? A packing inventory can ensure that you have everything you need. Toiletries, chargers, enough socks, etc.

8. Wear that heavy jacket or sweater on the plane. Nothing takes up more room in the suitcase than a bulky jacket, or sweater. One beloved travel hack is to wear it on the plane. It’s a win-win solution: More room in the suitcase, and planes are always freezing.

9. Use a dryer sheet to keep clothes smelling fresh. No matter how far you travel, your clothes will somehow end up smelling funky. Tossing a dryer sheet in the luggage will help keep it smelling fresh between washes.

10. Don’t leave packing to the last minute. One reason why people pack incorrectly is because they do it at the last minute. Rushing through packing only ensures that you will forget something. You don’t have to pack a week ahead, but a day or two in advance is better than last minute.

While much of 2020 was a wash for travel, adventurers are looking to 2021 to get away. In fact, over half of the vacations already booked for 2021 are for international destinations. After a year of road tripping, these packing hacks will come in handy for long-distance travels.

Miami is a paradise of interconnected oceanfront cities offering a rich tapestry of cultures living in harmony all in one place. I had the pleasure of living there a few years back and I refer to that time in my life with fondness, as ‘The Miami Years.’

If you’ve visited Miami over the last few years, you’ll know it as a city with many faces which has greatly changed over the last ten years. The huge influx of five-star hotels and branded luxury apartments and an abundance of art events – including the infamous Art Basel – fused with different cultures and a huge influx of Oligarchs, has helped transform the Magic City.

A Florida native – I was a beach babe born in beautiful Fort Lauderdale – it was during my time there that I reconnected with my childhood friend (and future roommate), Jenny Abrams. The Manchester-born and now internationally recognised lifestyle photographer, took me under her wing and showed me the ropes to beachside living. From the best restaurants and nightspots to the best art shows and gigs, to secluded beaches, it’s safe to say, we were never short of amazing experiences. At the time, she was moving up the ranks as one of Miami’s most well-known lifestyle photographers. She continues to work with some of the biggest brands in the world, including Google, Ted Baker, Soho House, Adidas, and Mercedes, to name a few. Her work has also been published in The Guardian, Vice, and Travel + Leisure and she has amassed an Insta following of over 149k.

As the city continues to change and evolve, I caught up with my longtime friend to find the inside scoop on her Miami highlights and where House of Coco readers should go for under-the-radar gems when we can travel there again. And as the evenings draw closer and the temperature continues to drop, there is no better time to reminisce and dream of my life in the city where the heat is always well and truly on.

Favourite breakfast spot: I could easily mention some of the newer and trendier of my favourite spots, like All Day Cafe, or the classic, Zak the Baker, but I am going to have to choose Enriquetas. At Enriquetas you can get a traditional (and massive) plate of Cuban food, complete with tostada (Cuban toast w/ butter) and the classic, cafe con leche (Cuban coffee with milk). This tiny hole-in-the-wall has survived decades of gentrification – including a fire! – and a whole bunch of crazy happenings on its street corner. They also have the best sweet cheese pastries (pastelito de queso) in Miami. Que rico!

Best bar: There are so many great places to grab a drink in Miami but since I moved away from the heart of the city to a cute little beach neighborhood in North Beach (15mins drive from South Beach), I’ve been digging the dive bars around my way. My favorite is a dingy old bar called On The Rocks. Not the typical Miami Beach crowd, it’s a mix of neighborhood locals and biker boys. But when I’m looking for something a little less gritty and a little more Miami, a solid-go-to is Broken Shaker at The Freehand.

Virtual escapism until we can be there in the flesh @JennyAbrams

Miami’s most photogenic spot: A view of the city and Biscayne Bay but from West Avenue on South Beach. Here you can get a sunset city view over the water.

What made me want to be a photographer: I’ve been obsessed with documenting my life since I was a young girl. Disposable cameras have always been my jam. But in 2007, a friend of mine had a DSLR camera that I couldn’t put down. It was then that I decided to learn the technicalities of the camera. From that point on, it became even more than an obsession. The camera became an extension of my right hand and still is!

Favourite club or place for live music: Wish I could say The Electric Pickle, which was the best place to find a good boogie but unfortunately Miami has lost some of its staple dance spots as rent has just skyrocketed in developing neighborhoods. RIP The Pickle and Purdy Lounge! However, we do have some great new places like Las Rosas – I love it there! Another consistent spot (for live bands) is Lagniappe – a wine and cheese venue with a cosy vibe.

Favourite art event: Art Basel Main Fair during Art Week. There are so many events that happen during this time, it’s always really hard to keep up with everything that’s going on. Most people think Art Basel is all over Miami, but the official fair is held at the Miami Beach Convention Center. I always tell people that if they are interested in seeing some proper art, invest in a ticket to the main fair. It’s a collection of the most prestigious galleries in the world, so you really can’t go wrong. I also love the Bill Brady Gallery which is on 92 NW Street.

Favourite place for dinner: Sabor de Peru. Best mom and pop Peruvian, it never fails! I also love Katana – kaiten style (conveyor belt) sushi – in North Beach.

How has Miami evolved since you moved there? Like CRAZY. I moved here a long time ago before Wynwood (Miami’s version of Shoreditch) was even a thing. Way before we had globally recognized chefs cooking in every restaurant; before Little Havana was a cool place to open a business. I remember riding my bike around the city and Art District for many years. Now when I go to Wynwood, I barely recognize anything! It’s been a rapid cultural evolution here and although I miss a more quiet and untouched Miami, I really love the evolution of our city. We are finally being taken seriously on all fronts: food, entertainment, art, architecture and even sport! Inter Miami FC just began their first season, and it’s huge! Miami is booming.

The good life @JennyAbrams

With quarantine restrictions being likened to a game of whack-a-mole, it certainly seems that long haul travel is out of the picture for most would-be travellers. However, there are plenty of destinations — especially those whose COVID-19 response has shined throughout the crisis — that people can still and should travel to as soon as we are able.

With news of a potential vaccine giving us a needed dose of hope, we’re beating the #BlackNovember blues by pre-planning all our holidays for 2021 to these stunning locales that are still open for tourism.

Coral Reef Club Barbados

With British Airways launching direct flights from London Heathrow to Bridgeton, there is literally no reason in the world you shouldn’t be pre-planning a beachy escape to the Coral Reef Club in Barbados.

This family-run hotel balances familial island warmth with tropical luxury and is undeniably one of the best properties on the island. Check into one of the Coral Reef Club’s 88 rooms and get lost within its 12 acres of garden. You can also relax and take in the calming views of the Caribbean or get stuck into a wide range of sporting activities.

For those looking for a little bit more adventure, there’s plenty of shipwrecks to discover in the West Coast. Keen environmentalists can also volunteer in the Barbados Sea Turtle Project, which is next door to the hotel.

Zannier Hotels Omaanda and Sonop

If you’re planning a trip to Namibia in 2021, why stay in just one incredible Zannier hotel when you can stay in two? The Zannier Hotels in Omaanda and Sonop are made up of just ten luxury huts and ten luxury tents respectively – and offer the ultimate in Namibian luxury.

Zannier Hotels Omaanda is surrounded by savannahs filled with breath-taking wildlife. You can fill your days with game drives or even participate in the Zannier Reserve’s Rhino Rangers volunteer programme, which helps to fight against poaching in Namibia.

At Zannier Hotels Sonop, you can take your holiday to (literal) new heights with a helicopter ride or hot air balloon safari overlooking the dunes. You can also check out the oldest and largest sand dunes on Earth at Sossusvlei, with some dunes rising to 383metres high (which is higher than The Shard!).

Bequia Beach Hotel St Vincent & The Grenadines

The Bequia Beach Hotel is known as the Caribbean’s best kept secret and it’s easy to see why. Bequia is remote island destination is located only on seven square miles of true tropical paradise west of Barbados and South of St. Vincent.

The hotel is nestled within nine acres of stunning tropical gardens on the beautiful Friendship Bay. Next year, the Bequia Beach Hotel welcomes the ultra-luxurious Villa One, which has five generously-sized suites that are perfect for a socially-distanced getaway with the family.

The hotel is also launching a saltwater infinity pool, refreshed menus, and a new wine cellar for 2021 – So how soon can we book again?

Pullman Maldives Maamutaa Resort, Maldives

The Maldives have been added to the UK’s travel corridor list – hurray! And we’re satiating our wanderlust by pre-planning our dream trip to the Pullman Maldives Maamutaa. Pullman Maldives is an all-inclusive paradise set on 18 hectares of tropical forestry and pristine beaches. This January, global wellness coach Sarah Hoey is joining the resort for a wellness residency that will certainly eradicate all of your pent-up pandemic anxieties. Can 2021 come any sooner please?

Kagi, Maldives

Located in the Northern Male Atoll, the Kagi Maldives Spa Island is a newly-opened five-star wellness resort experience. Kagi Maldives was designed by Japanese architect Yuji Yamazaki, who built the resort to surround the 1500 sqm wellness centre. Guests can choose from a Beach Pool Villa, Lagoon Pool Villa or Ocean Pool Villa, but heck, if the resort is this spectacular – it doesn’t matter which villa you decide to stay in. Everything is perfect in paradise after all.

Hotel Fariones, Lanzarote

With the Canary Islands back on the UK’s travel corridor list, we’re looking at the Hotel Fariones for our next Spanish beach break in 2021. This casual laid-back hotel exudes effortless Spanish charm and features a rooftop bar and pool – perfect for watching the sunset.

Jade Mountain, St. Lucia

Overlooking the breathtaking St Lucia’s Pitons World Heritage Site, the Jade Mountain hotel is the ideal spot to get back in touch with nature. This incredible property features 29 open-air Infinity pool and jacuzzi sanctuaries. It even offers a ‘Six in Your Sanctuary’ in-suite Tasting Menu, which is just the thing those looking to social-distance while on holiday. The Six in Your Sanctuary Menu comprises six gourmet dishes with complementary wine pairings and served by a private butler too.

Alphonse Island, Seychelles

We can’t think of a better way to reward ourselves for surviving 2020 than with a trip to the Alphonse Island, Seychelles. Alphonse Island offers a wealth of experiences that celebrate the rich biodiversity and natural surroundings of the Seychelles. From fly fishing and scuba diving, to just spending a day lounging in your sustainable beach bungalow – we think this is Seychelles at its finest – and we can’t wait to visit.

The Peligoni Club, Zakynthos, Greece

With a select-few Greek islands still on the travel corridors list, we’re pre-planning a luxurious villa getaway to The Peligoni Club. This cool and laid-back members only property combines homegrown Greek hospitality with sleek and minimalist luxury villas. Perfect to give you some much-needed calm after what has been a pretty hectic year.

Glenapp Castle, Scotland

If you’re afraid to risk quarantining and want to avoid travel corridors in general, why not book a luxury staycation in the UK? Glenapp Castle is an incredible Relais & Chateaux castle that boasts timeless charm and a rich history. Located on the breath-taking Ayrshire Coast, it is easy to forget about the COVID-19 blues and lose yourself in Glenapp’s extensive grounds. Believe us, nothing is better than taking in the relaxing sea views of the Ailsa Craig and maybe even catching a glimpse of Ireland’s coast on a clear day at Glenapp Castle.

If you know me, it’s no secret that I love Ibiza. As soon as I land on the island, I feel an instant rush of calm and excitement in equal measures. I lose all track of time, ignore my phone at all costs (unless, of course, it’s to take a snap or two) and fully embrace the bohemian way of life for a week or two.

My favourite time to visit is in the quieter autumn, winter and early spring months. The air is crisp but the sun is still warm. And it’s during these times that the real Ibiza emerges and a different sort of hedonism can be explored.

Experience the epitome of Ibiza luxury living with exclusive villas, stunning waterfront views, and unparalleled amenities, making your off-season stay truly unforgettable.

And if like me, it looks like you’ll be working from home for the foreseeable and you fancy a change of scene – most preferably in sunnier climes – I’ve pulled together a list below of my favourite things to do and spots to visit; that are best experienced away from the madding summer crowds.

Sensational Sunsets
And while no day is likely ever the same on an island where anything is possible, sunsets are a guaranteed spectacle to behold and their high-season is in the low-season when the celestial light shows take on richer colours of pink, yellow, orange and deep reds.

Such is the fortuitous setting of Hostal La Torre – another Ibiza restaurant-cum-hotel (more on that below) – it makes my list twice. It’s perfectly positioned to see the sunset – centred directly in line with the sun. But you don’t have to pay to drink or dine at La Torre to catch the last rays of the day. Next door, there is a lookout point with a few benches and picnic tables for the general public, so be sure to pack wine, nibbles and maybe a blanket, if you might prefer to edge closer and sit on the rocky cliff edges.

Another favourite sunset spot, and roughly about 40 minutes north from La Torre is Benirass. On Sunday’s the beach comes alive with drummers and musicians performing an eclectic sunset ritual. Part of Ibiza’s charm, the event is marked by the attendance of people from all walks of life gathering to enjoy the show.

Es Vedra, off Cala D’hort beach (also included in my list of best beaches) sits on the south coast of Ibiza and while geologists disagree, it has been said to be the third most magnetic point in the world. Legend also has it, that it has healing powers and that it’s the ancient site of the lost city of Atlantis. What is unquestionable is its beauty at sunset. One of my favourite places to go to is the deserted pirate lookout tower, Torre de Savinar or there is also a great lookout point which is often used by locals to meditate or practice yoga at sunset. Friend and local yoga instructor, Pixie Rath, is renowned for taking some of her yoga classes at the lookout point, a few snaps from her Insta below.

Best beaches

S’Estanyol
In the south of Es Cubells, this unspoiled beach was built around a wooden jetty. It’s a bit of a hike to get to once you’ve parked but it’s totally worth it. Just be sure to pack a pair of trainers for the journey down.

Cala D’Hort, Sant Josep
Although a busy spot in the summer due to its fortuitous setting overlooking the magnificent Es Vedra and neighbouring buzzing Cala D’Hort restaurant, this is one of my favourite places to visit and while away the day reading a book and swimming.

Cala Xuclar
The north east of the island offers some of the most beautiful and lesser-known beaches – there are plenty to be found and explored which is why renting a car is essential. Cala Xuclar is a tiny horseshoe-shaped bay surrounded by old fishing huts and crystal clear water. It is never overcrowded and we often have it to ourselves if we go early enough.

Cala Mastella
Still relatively untouched and unspoiled, this beach has retained its special bohemian-like status. This is another gem in the north east of the island and I would advise getting there early (and bring beach shoes as the sea bed is very stony).

A few of my favourite lesser-known beaches Cala Mastella, S’Estanyol and Cala D’Hort

Activities
The island has been long-loved by sporting enthusiasts as the terrain is a challenging mix of rocky flat and hilly trails offering some of the best cycling and hiking trails in Spain. In the summer, most would struggle as temperatures soar but in the off-season, the cooler weather offers much-needed respite to help tackle the steep climbs.

If walking is more your thing, Walking Ibiza offers guided and private walks for travellers looking to explore the beautiful island in detail. Runners can join running groups – there are a few on Instagram and Facebook – that are open to anyone. Running Ibiza, for example, offers Ibiza Town running tours, trail runs and (very helpfully) offers training for beginners as part of their Couch to 5K experience, so no need to feel intimidated if you’re a running novice like myself. Active Ibiza is another favourite of mine. They collaborate with an array of fitness instructors who provide guided programs and equipment.

SUP (Stand-Up Paddle) boarding is a must. The waters are calm and easily manageable for all levels of experience. It’s also a great way to explore the different coves and a lot of people have attempted the island in its entirety (a friend of mine included) stopping off at different places to camp for the night. There are plenty of rental places on the island, so best to find one that is near to where you’re staying.

While I’m there, I often try and book a few sessions at my favourite reformer pilates spot on the island, Energii Ibiza in Ibiza Town, which hails from Denmark. It truly is the “ultimate workout” but the helpful and friendly instructors make it a not-so daunting experience for beginners (like me). Classes start from approximately £17 per person.

Under-the-radar restaurants
A lot of great restaurants stay open on the island throughout the year. And while it’s not hard to stumble upon great places to dine, drink and dance, below is a list of my firm favourites and definitely worth exploring next time you’re in town.

La Finca Can Sul Dat
A former farmhouse hidden well off-the-beaten track on the road to Es Canar, it’s one of my favourite places to visit on the island and was introduced to me by a close friend who lives locally. The Swiss owner, Peter – possibly Ibiza’s answer to Hugh Hefner – is one-of-a-kind and always equipped with colourful stories to regale his guests with. He has often joined us for a drink or a shot of his famous home-made rocket fuel limoncello. The decor throughout is boho chic and his bedroom is actually in the middle of the restaurant complete with red velvet rope and curtains. The spot is equally famous for its live music and it’s not unknown for the evenings to carry on well into the wee hours of the next morning. The food menu is small but tasty. I highly recommend the entrecote for two to share.

Shamarkanda
Nestled in a beautiful olive grove near San Juan, in the north of the island, this magical spot – named after a city in Central Asia – offers a blend of cultures and flavours in its dishes. This year was my first time going at the recommendation of a friend and we opted to dine outside under the stars which had a magical Secret Garden Party feel, complete with glowing lanterns and draped light bulbs surrounded by trees. We tried their incredible bao buns, bursting with flavour (and it’s definitely worth ordering one of each). We also ordered the California rolls topped with salmon which was flambéed at the table, adding a touch of drama to the experience. The cocktail and wine list is also extensive and offers a nice mix of international and local flavours.

New favourite: Shamarkanda, San Juan

Hostal La Torre
Although no longer much of a hidden gem, there is no way I could write about Ibiza and not include Hostal La Torre. The latest offering from the Anadon family – owners of the infamous Cafe Mambo along with a few other outposts on the island – the restaurant-cum-boutique hotel not only serves up incredible food and spectacular views, but it also falls under the category of boutique listening joint. Be transported there NOW, listen here to Hostal La Torre Volume 1 and 2, selected by DJ’s Pete Gooding and fellow resident Mark Barrott.

It’s open all year and it is a must when on the island. It’s also extremely affordable to stay on site, with room nights starting from £40 per night in low-season.

Insider’s Tip: Other venues offering a heavy dose of eclectic Ibiza spirit includes Petit Pereyra on Talamanca Beach, Nightmares on Wax’s Wax Da Jam and Acid Sundays, both held at the old hippy market Las Dalias (more on that below).

Can Berri Vell
Exuding total charm and authenticity, this small and intimate outdoor-indoor restaurant is one of the most romantic restaurants in Ibiza in the heart of the town Sant Agusti des Vedra. Overlooking a typically Ibizan architecture church, it sits atop a small mountain, seamlessly blending into the rolling hills. The food is traditional Spanish grub with a modern-European twist.

Babylon Beach
Although it’s certainly grown in popularity since the first time I went, Babylon Beach is a great place to grab brunch and layout in the sun on the deck chairs provided. It’s still relatively low-key, especially during low-season; and don’t forget to try their insanely good pancakes!

Gare du Nord
I was blown away by this unexpected hole in the wall in San Juan, North Ibiza. The small entrance featuring an outdoor seating area and long bar leading into a sprawling yet intimate leafy courtyard. The food is a mix of classic European dishes using locally sourced produce. The wine list is elegant and yet adventurous. It’s also here that I discovered one of my new favourite wines, Black Nose, which is made in Ibiza. Gard du Nord also offers quirky yet modern rooms with prices starting from £50 per night in the low-season.

Culture trip
Artists and craftsmen have flocked to Ibiza over the centuries, so it’s only natural that the island offers the opportunity to get close to some pretty incredible art and crafts to take home.

Hippy Market Las Dalias
Every Saturday locals descend upon the world-famous hippy market to uncover the latest trinkets and treasures on display by local craftsmen, artists, food artisans, to the tune of live performances by local musicians and DJs. The market began in 1954 and was the brainchild of farmer and carpenter, Joan Mari. The market is one of my absolute favorites and I go every time I am there. This year, as part of an island-wide initiative to encourage out-of-season travel to Ibiza, the market is staying open throughout winter and early spring, to help encourage trade on the island and make up for lost time and earnings, as a result of the first lockdown earlier this year.

La Nave Salinas in Las Salinas Beach
Arguably one of my favourite art spaces in the world, La Nave Salinas launched last year as a space dedicated to “art in all senses”. The space is an old salt warehouse by the neighbouring salt lakes Ibiza is also known for. To date they’ve hosted several big name contemporary artists, including Kaws. The space is open and currently exhibiting works by the artist Albert Pinya, painter and cartoonist including ceramics, animation shorts, sculptures and ephemeral murals.

La Maison D’Éléphant
This design concept store is hard to miss, fronted by enormous sculptures of robots, pink elephants and silver skulls making it hard to miss. Inside, visitors can explore five floors of outrageously quirky and contemporary design. Among the incredible art you are able to find and buy decorations, antiques, unique furniture, and even clothing. The founder, Bruno Reymond, is interior stylist to many infamous buildings on the island, including Ushuaia and the Pacha Hotel.

Sluiz.
Although it doesn’t stock one-of-a-kind, handmade crafts and art, it does offer a huge collective of outdoor, indoor furniture, cool lighting, clothing and accessories from around the world. Founded by a Dutch couple, the sprawling warehouse-like store, also has a bar and restaurant featuring low-hanging ornate crystal chandeliers and plush armchairs. I often go and spend a few hours there indulging in all of the good food, cocktails and shopping.

@LaNaveSalinas

Please note, all of the aforementioned businesses were still open and operating at the time of writing this article. This might have changed as the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve around the world.

Switzerland are world leaders in a lot of things – cheese, chocolate, watches, skiing, trains, mountains, politics, and even tiny knives. Fewer people know that the Swiss are actually masters of hospitality too, and The Alpina Gstaad is perhaps the finest example.

High above the shores of Lake Geneva in a desirable and striking hilltop location, close to cultural hub and summer hotspot Montreux, is The Alpina Gstaad. On first glance, the building is traditional, with the typical aesthetic of alpine ski lodges – timber-clad, rustic, and probably covered in snow. However, open the doors to begin an entirely different story.

Imagine if you took some of London’s trendiest hotels out of the city and transformed them into an alpine retreat, that’s what we have here, and it works perfectly. The attention to detail sets The Alpina aside from nearby luxury hotels, from the cool basement cinema to the Acqua di Parma toiletries in every bathroom.

In a hotel where you would absolutely expect the best of the best, what would you expect from a restaurant other than a Michelin-star? Award winning Executive Chef Martin Göschel supervises the Alpina’s three restaurants: Sommet, Megu and Swiss Stübli.

Megu is known as the best Asian restaurant in Switzerland, and for a good reason. Head Chef Tetsujiro Ogata and Head Sushi Chef Tsutomu Kugota serve up a modern take on authentic Japanese dishes, with lavish presentations and some of the rarest ingredients in the world, let alone Switzerland. Among its many accolades, the restaurant also holds the title for having the largest sake collection in the country, which for me was very appealing news indeed.

If, like me, you succumb to the siren call of the dramatic landscapes of the mountains but you’re not actually a skier, you’re in luck. The Alpina is a resort in itself, and the world-renowned spa was what put this hotel on my radar initially.

There’s no way to describe the Six Senses Spa without using some form of cliché, so here’s a few: nirvana, sanctuary, haven, refuge, oasis… and so on. It’s all of those and more. Gstaad isn’t remote by any stretch of the imagination, but The Alpina’s spa transports you to another world, one that’s remote, calming and free of the humdrum of daily life. Health and wellbeing is the core of all the activity here, and their staff are world experts in the treatments they provide, from core beauty that transforms your façade, to specialist treatments that change the waves within to make you feel at one with your body and soul.

There’s also a hammam, a Salt Room, Oriental Room and our favourite, the striking Cave Room, which looks like it’s made from chunks of Himalayan pink salt. A wellness studio is the centre of class-based activities like Tai-Chi (definitely try this), and there’s even hydrotherapy in the changing rooms themselves, with saunas, ice showers (be careful to try this!) and plunge pools (again, worth it but brace yourself).

To make sure you get the absolute most of your stay, the spa encourages a Wellness Screening at the start of your stay to help you on your ‘way to wellness’. This non-invasive screening analyses your key physiological biomarkers and enables the experts to build a personalised program that blends high-tech science with ancient healing traditions, alternative therapies, holistic spa treatments and wellness activities.

Besides being at the absolute height of luxury and serenity, a real standout for The Alpina is the touches of personalisation. One if the key services they offer is an ‘Alchemy Bar’, which offers guests the opportunity to blend together your own scrubs and oils to your liking, which are then later used in your treatments upon your spa visit.

The spa’s centrepiece, and our favourite place, is the outdoor pool which in summer becomes a real focal point of activity. It’s surrounded by gardens designed by Jean Mus (known as the gardener who draws happiness) and has some of the most impressive views of the Alps you’ll experience in your lifetime. Whether you’re watching the sun come up, or down, it doesn’t matter – time simply fades away and you own the moment.

We might be confined to barracks for the foreseeable, but we know #TeamCoco won’t be the only ones already curating a list of where we’ll be escaping to once this is all over.

While far-flung destinations are always high on our lust list, the reality is that the tourism industry closer to home will also need a big hand to get back on its feet post-lockdown and given we will ALL be in need of some well-earned R&R after all the drama, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite UK wellness breaks to look forward to for some serious relaxation.

2. The Headland

Newquay previously have been synonymous with that post-GCSE party crowd, but it may well lure a new clientele with the opening of The Aqua Club, a new multi-million pound leisure complex at The Headland. Head outside for a sunset spa with its two pools enjoying views of the Atlantic and The Deck offering a place for guests to enjoy a bite to eat. 3. Seaham Hall

Nothing beats a bracing coastal walk for blowing away the cobwebs and at County Durham’s Seaham Hall there’s no shortage of dramatic coastline to explore. The Georgian country house features 21 beautiful suites and a whopping 44,000 sq ft of spa. Accessed via a subterranean walkway, it includes indoor pool, outdoor hot tubs, Zen Garden complete with hydrotherapy pool, an Asian herbal sanarium, salt sauna… the list goes one. Drawing influence from Far Eastern healing and wellness rituals, some of its newest therapies include ishga touch therapy, combining the natural, healing properties of seaweed with an advanced, ancient ‘touch’ technique for those affected by anxiety, depression, phobias, exhaustion and stress; so undoubtedly something we could all do with post-lockdown. Last year it also introduced a range of alternative therapies that focus on the key tenets of rebalancing life, improving sleep quality, de-stressing and promoting relaxation, such as hypnotherapy and Mind Calm.

A stay costs from £195 (two sharing), for one night in a Junior Suite, full English breakfast and use of the spa facilities. Currently they are accepting bookings for departure after August 1st. Call Seaham Hall on 0191 516 1400.
