Tell us about the journey that lead you to Camille Defago the brand… Oh my god I’ve been through so much, hahaha. When I was 15 I started designing collages but didn’t have the confidence to publish them or show them. When I moved to Buenos Aires I decided to create a Instagram account with a fake name and started posting my collages. I started getting lots of engagement and reactions so I decided to change the name to By Camille Defago. Then I moved back to Lima and printed my collages on big frames, I sold every single one of them. This encouraged me to create my first brand called Viva la Vida, it was a brand of men’s swimwear that were printed with my colorful collages. I had such a terrible experience making my first summer campaign for Viva la Vida (because of the photography and video team) that when I sold every swim short I decided to leave the brand aside and not continue with it. I didn’t want people to know me as a random brand, I wanted people to know me by my name, Camille. This is when I decided to launch myself as a designer and started creating pieces under my name as a designer. You want your customers to feel empowered when wearing your designs, how do you achieve this? I achieve this by offering extrovert, colorful, joyful designs. Each collage has a story and great memories behind them. People highlight from the rest each time they use my clothing because of the color. I don’t want them to feel ashamed about standing out from the croud, from breaking boundaries, for being different and original, I want them to feel empowered, GREAT. Achieving this through strong and bold collages. Bright, colourful and bold, your designs make a statement. Who is your dream customer? My dream customer would definitely be top celebrities. I would love someday to dress Chiara Ferragni, Alexa Chung, Bella Hadid and other jet setters. But my actual dream customer is a girl who is confident of herself, who loves everything about her, LOVES to travel and spend her summer’s in Mykonos or on the beautiful beaches of France. She is confident, strong, bold, she is light and definitely stands from the crowd. She doesn’t care what people think about herself, she is true to herself and to her personal essence.

Only 21, you have achieved so much with the brand already. What has been your proudest moment?

I know I have achieved a lot of things by now but I have so much to go through. I have so many projects, visions and idea to take my brand to the next step. My proudest moment was my first fashion show which was this December 2019. We put on a great show: 20 international and national models, we did it at a huge house which was built 50 years ago so it had a renaissance twist to it, my collages were projected on the walls of the house, 150 guests, it was amazing.

Talk us through an average day at the business?

We have a weekly team meeting every Monday in which we talk about each months objectives and each team member’s tasks. Once a month in a week meeting we brainstorm about new ideas and visions that can be added to the brand. In this way I involve my team members and consider their ideas and opinions. I want them to feel as part of the family, part of The C Team. I want them to be as passionate to the brand as I am.

What are your plans for the future? I have changed my mind many times. I wanted to open physical stores in London, Dubai, Japan, New York and others. But learning about the new consumer now a days I have decided to invest 100% on e-commerce. Our consumers are changing into online consumers, not physical. So now my plans for the future is to focus on keep selling worldwide through fashion e-commerce platforms. I also have in my plans making pop up’s in beaches like Mykonos, Ibiza, Majorca, Sardinia, Santorini, Marbella, Corfu and other top destinations. I want to focus also on creating mind-blowing fashion editorials, amazing marketing campaigns, and taking my brand all around the world! My plans for the future and my main goal right now is to have the opportunity to showcase my collections at any fashion week: Paris, London, NYC, Milan. Anyone of them would be great and huge for the brand. Since launching the brand, what has been your highlight?

Definitely having the possibility of being featured on respected fashion magazines. Literally when I started my brand, my long term goal was to be showcased in Vogue. I had less than a year with the brand and I was featured on the most respected fashion magazines in the world: Vogue, Tatler, Vanity Fair, Condé Nast Traveller.

Looking back, is there anything you would do differently? I believe everything I have been through has happened for a reason. I wouldn’t do anything different because it has made me who I am today as a designer, brand and person. I have learned so much in the business, without even studying Fashion Design. (I study communications hahaha). I know all of my experiences will take me somewhere big.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list? 

Definitely, The French Rivera, Mykonos, Amalfi, and Bali.

What quote do you like to read when you are lacking motivation? “You will never influence the world by trying to be like it” For anyone wanting to start their own fashion business, what advice would you offer?

Everything is about taking risks, you got to take risks in order to grow.

Don’t worry about stress, its just part of the process. That’s the beauty of it. Enjoy it.

Auckland, New Zealand

It’s among the major cities in New Zealand. The city is a Metropolitan center on the North Island that boasts of two harbors, magnificent and natural landscapes, and volcanoes. One can also visit the Fairmont Banff Springs, the bow falls, the cave and basin National Historic site, the tunnel mountains, the Upper Hot Springs, and many more lovely sites.

El Nido, Philippines

With a very gorgeous and clean beach, this resort town on the Filipino island of Palawan is truly an off-the-beaten-path town. The city is known for its beaches with white sands and coral reefs and amazingly clear waters from the lagoons. Near the town is an island known as Shimizu that has water filled with all kinds of fish. The areas also have very many diving sites, such as the Dilumacad island tunnel that leads to a cavern under the water.

Mendoza, Argentina

Mendoza is the largest wine region in Argentina. During my visit, I was excited to visit one of the bodegas for a wine tasting and a tour around the wineries. Apart from that, the city streets are evergreen and leafy, and the buildings full of modern art decor on buildings across the city. I also got a chance to visit the Museo Municipal de Arte Mordeno, a city that displays modern and contemporary art.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is the capital city of Hungary that is divided into Buda and Pest by the Danube River. The city is also referred to as ‘the Paris of the East’ because of its magnificent architecture that makes Budapest look and feel awesomely unique. Several places that make Budapest a great destination include the Danube River, the ruin bars, thermal bath, historic churches, and the castle hill. Their traditional Hungarian cuisines are to die for.

Safed, Israel

Also known as Tzfat, this is a city in Northern District, Israel. Tzfat is said to be the birthplace of Kabbalah. It was also regarded as a Holy city shortly after the Jews were expelled from Spain in the early 1940s. It is also the highest city that is elevated over 900 meters high in Galilee. The city has the top most attraction centers frequently visited, including the Bat Ya’ar ranch. Soul and Art fine art gallery, Abuhav synagogue, The Ashkenazi Ha’Ari synagogue, and the Old City of Safed.

Galway, Ireland

Galway is known for its wild ‘stag and hen’ parties. The Irelanders are known to throw the wildest bachelor and bachelorette parties before getting hitched. The city is also known for its Irish character and spirit, starting with the pubs, their Irish folk music, and delicious cuisines. On the last trip I took to Galway, I was privileged enough to visit the breath-taking cliffs of Moher. I also visited very scenic and educational places, including the Spanish Arch, the Galway cathedral, the museum Lynch’s castles, the Atlantaquaria National aquarium, and a ride on the Aran Islands ferries, and even shopping on the streets.

His restaurant blends modern tastes of Japanese cuisine with Korean flavours to create a fusion never seen in this part of the world before.

Akira Back, if you’re not familiar with the name, is someone who is familiar with a lot of names. From having restaurants and pop-ups across the world, including the infamous Yellowtail at the Bellagio in Vegas, he’s become a chef to the stars, with A-Listers on his list of regular diners.

His menus takes on a sharing culture to multiply the opportunities, where interesting ingredients are mixed with unexpected flavours.

In any ordinary setting, a tuna pizza would be a controversial choice to say the least, but anyone will agree that the Palm, or even Dubai, is anything but ordinary. Tuna pizza here is actually one of the most famous dishes.

Granted, it’s not the kind of pizza you wake up in bed with after a heavy night – it’s actually a tortilla with thinly sliced tuna sashimi, ponzu mayo and white truffle oil, with micro shiso scattered on the top. Forget what you know about pizza, because this is the future.

Ask any friend who’s dined with Akira Back and they’ll tell you not to leave without eating two things – the tuna pizza, and the AB Tacos. If you’re familiar with the magic that is Korean cooking, you’ll already be sold. These crispy tacos are stuffed with beef wagyu galbi and topped with ponzu sauce, which packs so much flavour you’ll be telling your friends about it too.

No matter where you are in the world, Sofitel Hotels and Resorts can always be found in the most glamorous buildings – a palace here, a skyscraper there… London’s offering is no different, the Sofitel London St James is actually housed in an old grand bank building on Waterloo Place, sandwiched between The Mall and Piccadilly. When you stay here, you are literally neighbours with The Queen during your stay… keep that in mind.

Bank buildings are recognisable from their impressive facades, marble floors, vaulted ceilings and huge impressive entrances, each screaming money and power more than the last. During its conversion to a hotel, these touches were softened with a tasteful decor and a fleet of smartly in line with a 5-star modern establishment, but the old time feels are all there.

There might be a huge Union Flag hanging above the door, but inside you’re greeted with a French vibe. Quite literally, staff will welcome you in both French and English, paying homage to their heritage (Sofitel was originally a French brand which was founded in France in 1964). Whether you’re in a palace in Oman, on the Palm in Dubai, or in the centre of London, their mantra is to always ‘live the French way’ – spontaneous, carefree and with an unmistakable touch of joie de vivre.

The Sofitel London St James was even designed by a French guy. The esteemed Pierre Yves-Rochon handled the transformation into a high-class hotel in 2002 and again during their most recent renovation.

The result is sublime. A modern twist on a classic now sees a sixties vibe running through the rooms, with pops of colours and Warhol icons hanging on the walls. You won’t find a tea tray or a tiny kettle in sight here, instead they’ve kept it cool with Smeg kitchen stuff and retro style iPod docks. Bathrooms are swish and romantic (they were literally designed by the French, so what else do you expect?) and the toiletries are of course by Hermès.

Guests come here for the rooms but they stay for the food. The same Wild Honey St James which once stood on St George Street is now here at the Sofitel with all the powder blue glory of its former home. It’s casual all day dining but without being too obvious you’re eating in a hotel. The menu has clearly been very cleverly composed of fine European fare and Negronis that taste like juice which has been hand squeezed from an angel.

The hotel has that great nostalgia feel. It’s a throwback to a time where guests would find a quiet corner to read a book, or take tea leisurely smoking from tobacco holders wearing long gloves. We actually arrived unceremoniously early before the previous guests had time to check out, but enjoyed a peppermint in one of the adjoining salons and listened to a live harp performance. Possibly a first for House of Coco, but hopefully not a last.

What laws and etiquette should I be aware of when entering Saudi Arabia?

Alcohol and Substances
The sale, purchase and consumption of alcohol or drugs is illegal in Saudi Arabia. This also applies to travellers who have been issued a Saudi tourist visa.
Public Behaviour
Public displays of affection, profane language or generally inappropriate behaviour is prohibited. All tourists are advised to act modestly and avoid any behaviours that can be deemed inappropriate.
Dress
Saudi Arabi has particular rules when it comes to public dress, the handling of this matter was of great intrigue upon the announcement of a Saudi Arabia Tourist Visa. According to the Visit Saudi official website both sexes are asked to dress modestly, while avoiding revealing or tight-fitting clothing. Clothing with profane images or language are also advised against.

Hannah has been on a real journey since launching the brand, having experience imposter syndrome and had to overcome her own limiting beliefs to be where she is today.

A true inspiration, Hannah is a force to be reckoned with and a name that should be on everybody’s lips in the world of interiors. We couldn’t wait to spend some time with her to find out more…

Tell us about the journey that lead to you launching Anima and Amare…

It started back in summer 2016 and moved quite fast. After working in high end residential for many years I was offered the opportunity to freelance on a restaurant design in Great Wishford, Salisbury it had a lot of media attention due to being the only pub in the village to shut down & a family run business of a mum and two sisters took it over and needed a designer to implement a design and project manage the renovation and Walla they found me.

Once completed I was offered a job within a leading hospitality design firm but pretty quickly realised I was ready to risk it all and go it alone. So one Tuesday afternoon I came home from work a told my husband I was quitting my job to start my own business, little did I know he was having a mini heart attack whilst smiling and supporting on the outside, as only he knew that in 3 weeks’ time we’d be starting to plan and save for a wedding.

The first year I worked my but off and actually would clean a local private hospital from 4:30am – 8am to ensure I always had regular money to pay the bills and then get home have breakfast and start working on my business till late at night.

And if I wasn’t busy enough, I was offered the opportunity to guest speak for a local university offering professional knowledge and guidance to students. This role developed hugely and after a lot of hard work and determination I am now an Associate Lecturer & unit leader to over 5 modules 3 years on.

You have worked on some amazing projects over the years, which one is your proudest work?

Hmmm this is a hard one they all have a lot of pride attached to them.

I’m going to have to give more than one I’m afraid …

The first was when I was working for another firm it was a famous chef’s restaurant in Mayfair this stands out for a number of reasons but the main being it was the project that made me realise I was ready to go it alone. If I hadn’t worked on this maybe I wouldn’t have started my business!

The second was Nousha Lounge a coffee & cocktail bar, to this day I walk in and the design blows me away the clients really did let me have free reign to come up with a scheme. I took risks and it paid off implementing large amounts of black can seem daunting but with accents of gold it really does look stunning.

And finally, a grade 2 listed building in Southampton ‘The Royal Pier’ this one was a real pinch me moment it had a two day media launch and although took a long time to get to completion the final outcome was worth the wait. This was a building I used to drive past when first at university In my 20’s (please don’t calculate how old I’m getting) & say to myself I’d love afford to eat in there one day as well as thinking to be able to design a building like this would be the interior design dream and only then I will know I’ve made it within the industry, I remember it as clear as day. Never did I realise it would happen so soon.

It’s not until you look back you realise how far you’ve come.

Looking back, is there anything you would do differently?

Unfortunately, yes! Two things stand out the most.

One: I wasted so much money on advertisement in my first year I felt if I needed to be seen in order to get work, I needed to advertise in the prestigious magazines and advert sources. I did not receive one job from one single advert I had posted, all my work came from word of mouth, and recommendation’s & people searching me through the internet.

The second thing I would change was my confidence, I had just come from 7 years working in high profile companies working on multiple large scale projects managing from concept to completion, yet when I started by myself, I didn’t give enough credit for my worth. It was as if I felt because I was starting a new business, I was starting a new career and I really wasn’t.

Have you ever heard of the Imposter syndrome? Always feeling you’ve got somewhere by pure fluke rather than earning it and deserving it? Well that was me I did not value my knowledge enough and I was losing out on money by not pricing my services high enough. My passion for design would take over and I suppose this leads on to a third thing, I would shout about my accomplishments & projects far more as well as remember to take photos. I would always worry about coming across arrogant or appear to be boasting so I would quietly move on to my next project.

In five years’ time, where do you hope to see the brand?

I am currently re-branding so by then we will have shiny new website logo and style hopefully that will be in 6 months and not 5 years.

This is a really hard question for me to answer because every day is a new opportunity. You never know what project will land on your desk and in what direction it will take you, which is the best thing about my industry you can never get bored. What I do know is that we will have expanded with lots more High-end projects on the books, and we are currently working on introducing yacht Interiors into the fold after receiving a number of requests.

I eat, live and breathe my industry and have a lot to talk about when it comes to Interiors and Architecture so to have a platform where I can talk about this on a regular basis is on the goal list within the next year.

Talk us through an average day in your life…

An average day fortunately doesn’t exist for me, I could not cope with the same routine day in day out which is why I love my Industry and running my own business.

I tend to wake up around 7:00am do the normal routine with my son. Sorry guys no “I get up at 6am go to the gym, do a session of Pilates followed by a celery juice all before work”. My David Lloyd membership card has been collecting dust at the bottom of my handbag for months now. On the days I am not Lecturing at the Uni I get in to my Office around 8:30 and pretty much work consistently the whole day however now with the new addition of a mini Intern hanging off my leg demanding to sit on my lap and smash the laptop. (I’m talking about my Son of course; no staff member has ever been quite that enthusiastic yet) I tend to work remotely where possible to help increase inspiration and new ideas. I’m a creative person so therefore need to be surrounded by creativity to be motivated. I will always when possible attend London showrooms and shows always ensuring I am update to date with all current suppliers.

What quote do you like to read when you are lacking motivation…

It’s not so much one quote it’s a serious, I am huge follower of ‘The Law of Attraction’ and what you put out you get out. When I am really lacking drive, I put on ‘Motiversity’ and William King Hollis videos on You Tube, all the great motivational speakers preaching really gets me going again and I always find after a morning listening I will somehow get a new project land my way. I’m all about the power of positivity.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your Bucket list?

Oh wow how long have you got?…. I’ve been extremely fortunate to see some wonderful places which were already on my bucket list such as Dubai, Yo Semite, California, Cuba, Vietnam, Cambodia and so may more but my highlights and ones I extremely recommend would be Havana in Cuba, the absolute kindest people I’ve ever met and still in its original raw architectural state and not yet ruined by tourism, however I’d be quick they are starting to slowly put up new hotels on the waterfront.

Second, Vietnam but North Vietnam as far as you can go in a place called Sapa you cannot get more authentic and rural, high in the mountains where they still live from the land and work hard for everything, no next day Amazon deliveries here I’m afraid.

And finally the Philippines, I’m going back with my family for Christmas I spent a month travelling all-round the Philippines and I can’t get it out of my head how stunning it was so to be able to go back with my husband and son will be really special .

One thing on my bucket list I haven’t completed yet is whale watching in Vancouver Island, Canada in spring to hopefully see Orca, grey, Humpback and Minke whale. And finally, Lake Como in Italy, every year I say I’m going to go and yet I still haven’t.

How much has social media played a part in your business?

I would class my use with Social Media like a bad relationship, it’s all or nothing, I know it’s not really the best thing for me, yet I keep going back.

The @Anima_and_Amare Instagram account goes through waves of being updated and neglected. I am extremely bad at being consistent and uploading projects. Then when I have a day when I can finally relax, I will spend hours on it. I tend to use it for project research and inspiration more than anything. I wouldn’t say it had a huge impact on getting work but personally I do check out someone’s Instagram account before using them so I’m sure people do the same to me so actually maybe I should be a bit more consistent with the account. In terms of other platforms of social media, I don’t seem to use anything else other than Instagram. It’s very easy to get wrapped up in the social media world and I much prefer doing things my own way rather than comparing against others in my industry.

For anyone thinking about launching an interiors brand, what advice would you give?

I would strongly advise getting a proper degree related qualification and not falling into the trap of short courses offering you the chance to be an Interior Designer in 3 weeks or months. This industry is extremely large and has a lot to learn it’s not just pretty cushions as most presume, its building regulations, planning applications, structural alterations and project management, I am still learning to this day.

Get yourself industry experience in large practices first before going it alone.

Find yourself a business mentor this is something I wish I had done in the early days.

And finally just get yourself out there, there is no time like the present to follow your dreams you’ll never have enough money and there will never be the right time so why not start from nothing and watch yourself grow in to something.

What’s the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?

One piece of advice I found to be so true “Never judge a book by its cover”

I learnt this very early on in my business the most unlikely candidate can become your client so never dismiss someone because you ‘don’t think’ they will benefit you.

I can’t remember if anyone in particular has given me advice that has been a driving force. I’m quite a strong-minded person and try to figure things out on my own, I tend to give myself pep talks and advice (whether it’s good or not is debatable but I’ve got this far by myself).

However, one thing I do always say is “Never judge anyone for what job they do now, you never know what job they are working towards in the future. “I know this from personal experience with myself and many other great entrepreneurs who started from nothing. Hopefully if we all followed this advice the world would be a nice more accepting place.
