Biting into a sweet, gooey date as I sipped my Turkish tea was the perfect welcome to the Ajwa Sultanahmet Hotel Istanbul Turkey. It even overtook (just slightly, because of my stomach’s rumbling) the fancy car service that transported me from the airport to the hotel.

Experience Luxury and Elegance

The gorgeous Ajwa Sultanahmet Istanbul is exactly that – gorgeous. The stunning architecture is what catches your eye as soon as it is in sight – regardless of the time of the day as either the sun is hitting the walls, making the gold shine strong and the white stone appear to have flecks of pink and blue; or the entire hotel is a glowing building, standing out completely on the corner of the street. The hotel is what I’d imagine a Turkish princess’s first ‘home away from home’ to be. A beautiful grand entrance, stunning and ornate decor – featuring only the best artists’ handiwork – and a private hammam to indulge in a cleansing scrub.

The interiors of the hotel are even more decorative, with the furniture being a mixture of locally-made designs, as well as some from Damascus. The chairs and cabinets feature beautiful Mother of Pearl details and each floor showcases Azerbaijani (or Azeri) artwork on the walls. If you take a liking to this kind of design, be sure to visit the nearby shops which double as art galleries – they sell different pieces of furniture, as well as Persian rugs.

Indulge in Opulence

This stunning artwork continues within the Ajwa hotel rooms; my bathroom door is open as I walk in so I am immediately greeted by beautiful blue patterned tiles and rose gold finishing. Mother of Pearl is present in the furniture and that’s probably all I focus on as, afterwards, my attention was very much so diverted to the large bed that was calling my name. There are 48 Deluxe Rooms (of which I was lucky to secure one) but if you’re looking for something slightly more swish, the hotel offers a Presidential Suite and even separate guesthouses if you’re travelling in a group.

Breakfast at Ajwa is an impressive display. You can opt for the buffet which offers an array of treats: eggs, courgette and spinach fritters, Turkish sausages; pides; labneh – the works. Alternatively, you can order a la carte, including the traditional Turkish breakfast spread…which pretty much includes every item on the buffet and more. I’d definitely recommend a sunrise breakfast as the panoramic view from the restaurant is so pretty – you can see a mixture of the Old City and the Marmara Sea.

Ajwa Sultanahmet Hotel Istanbul Turkey

Discover the Rich History and Culinary Delights of Istanbul

Lunch and dinner are served on the same top floor, in the Zeferan restaurant and the Azerbaijani chef cooks up a feast every mealtime. Whether plates full of grilled meats, salads and ‘shakh plov’ (a local rice dish) or Sultan’s stew (lamb with aubergine purée) and yoghurt soup; one thing is for certain – I did not go hungry here.

With the Old City right on your doorstep, you’re minutes away from impressive and historical sights such as the Blue Mosque, the Haiga Sophia and Topkapi Palace. The hotel concierge was only too happy to fix me up with a tour guide – I have been to Istanbul before but you learn so much more about the cultural spots with someone who knows all about them. For example, my guide told me that there are over 21,647 tiles making up the Blue Mosque (so named because of the dark blue titles on the interior design and, over time, the name changed from Dark Blue Tiled Mosque to Blue Mosque). Another interesting fact I was told, was that it took 10,000 people to build the Haiga Sophia over five years – and it took 13,000 kg of gold in expenses. My jaw definitely dropped at this point.

Immerse Yourself in Luxury and Tradition

A trip to the famous Grand Bazaar was a hectic but fascinating experience, as I loaded up with spices, ceramics and jewellery. It’s easy to get lost inside – and it’s no wonder as the Grand Bazaar is home to five mosques, two fountains, 67 roads, 40 doors and even a school.

After a busy day of walking the streets of Istanbul, nothing is more appealing than a trip to the hammam I mentioned earlier. The Afiya Spa at the hotel is something everyone should definitely experience. I had received the traditional Turkish treatment before but the hammam room at Ajwa was by far one of the most beautiful I’d seen and well worth a visit. The Turkish Bath treatment takes place in the spa and after a menthol steam room session, I enjoyed a thorough scrubbing. It wasn’t as harsh as I’ve had this treatment before which is fantastic, as you can really relax as you’re getting exfoliated and becoming the cleanest you’ve ever been. Seriously – the cleanest I’ve been in my life.

A magical stay that I would definitely recommend for anyone wanting a boutique hotel experience while being footsteps from the majority of Istanbul’s best gems.

Rapidly cementing its status as a top destination for foodie travellers, Santa Barbara’s culinary scene has never been better. Situated just two hours north of Los Angeles, California, the region holds all the raw ingredients for great wining, dining and culture – from year-round produce and sustainable seafood to world-class vineyards, not to mention a blossoming art scene to boot. Here’s why you should visit in 2020…

Devour world-class food in fabulous surroundings

In recent years, a flurry of new chefs have arrived in Santa Barbara who are applying a high level of skill to the abundant local produce. Forget stuffy white table cloths and smart dress codes, this city is all about laidback luxury. Serving up some of California’s most innovative dining experiences, a number of recently opened restaurants have been wowing locals and visitors alike. Try Bibi-Ji, Santa Barbara’s first contemporary Indian, serving playful spins on classics with a menu that highlights the local seafood served ‘sea-to-table’, Tyger Tyger, a dynamic 1,900-square-foot marketplace featuring ‘fast-fine’ Southeast Asian cuisine, or Loquita, a lively Spanish-style restaurant in the Funk Zone.

There’s a brand new culinary festival

Santa Barbara is on the cusp of launching a city-wide extravaganza, the Santa Barbara Culinary Experience, presented in partnership with the Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts. The event, taking place 13-15 March 2020, is a new annual festival celebrating the bounty of what is grown in and around Santa Barbara, including a tasting event showcasing the best of Santa Barbara’s food and drink, hands-on cooking classes, food trend talks, and more. A new map of Julia Child’s favourite Santa Barbara haunts, specially created for release during the Santa Barbara Culinary Experience, will enable visitors to follow in the famous chef’s footsteps any time of year.

…And a burgeoning art scene

In addition to a growing creative scene, which is evident throughout Santa Barbara’s creative Funk Zone, Santa Barbara Museum of Art will reveal a newly expanded, multi-floor wing in spring 2020, housing photography, Asian art and other exciting exhibits. To open the new wing, the museum will host an exhibit on Vincent van Gogh and his influences, “Through Vincent’s Eyes,” in October 2020. By presenting around 15 works of art by Van Gogh alongside more than 125 works of art selected to reflect the surprisingly varied art that he most admired, the landmark exhibition makes Santa Barbara one to watch on the art circuit.

It’s an Instagrammer’s dream

The first thing you’ll notice when you arrive in Santa Barbara is how pretty it is. Spanish colonial style architecture, pristine streets lined with shops, restaurants, wineries and boutiques, a gorgeous harbour and miles of sandy beaches make it a picture-perfect holiday destination. Delve a bit deeper and you’ll find that the interiors really live up to the city’s shiny exterior. Instagram’s great and good stay at the Martyn Lawrence Bullard-designed Hotel Californian, where Spanish colonial revival architecture and a modern Moorish vibe combine, creating a design infusion begging to be photographed.

It’s the perfect spot to rosé (or pinot) all day

Celebrating its 15th anniversary, the cult-classic film Sideways brought worldwide fame for Santa Barbara wine country. Wine consumption increased in general while the demand for elegant, and highly quaffable, pinot noir shot up. The Oscar-winning movie was filmed almost entirely on-location throughout Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara County. Nowadays, you don’t need to trawl from vineyard to vineyard to get your hands on some of the destination’s celebrated bottles. Santa Barbara’s Urban Wine Trail offers both novices and aficionados the opportunity to learn about and taste the wines of many different varieties and styles crafted by the County’s best winemakers. 30 wineries across the California city now make up the trail and can be explored by foot, bike or taxi.

Relax in the lap of luxury

Accommodation in Santa Barbara comes in many shapes and sizes. Curl up in a hillside hideaway like the iconic Belmond El Encanto, immerse yourself right in the action at Harbor View Inn’s brand new downtown wing or relax in the lap of luxury at Rosewood Miramar Beach Montecito, which opened just last year. On a budget? No bother. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, lies El Capitan Canyon, a resort boasting fully furnished cedar-lined cabins with vaulted ceilings and French doors opening onto El Capitan Beach and offering incredible ocean views.

Live the true California beach life

After soaking the city’s food and culture, it’s time to hit the beach. With miles of sun-drenched and sandy coastline, there’s a spot to suit every type of traveller, from surf-seekers to families. Dog lovers should head to Arroyo Burro Beach, better known to locals as Hendry’s Beach, where pooches revel on the dog-friendly flat sands. If surfing is your bag, Leadbetter Beach is best for catching waves, while sophisticates will enjoy the pristine sands of Butterfly Beach, where cocktails can be taken at the nearby Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara. Heading closer to town, family-friendly East Beach is located next to Stearns Wharf, with lifeguard stations, a playground and cafés.

Nestled on the serine south-eastern coast of Mauritius you will find Le Chaland Beach, an unspoilt stretch of golden sand lying alongside a rich, deep turquoise ocean that is home to Anantara Iko Resort.

This sun kissed island in the Indian Ocean is magical and doesn’t disappoint. It lived up to everything I expected, unblemished shorelines, natural wonders, culture and a dash of luxury courtesy of Anantara, a new deluxe five-star resort that successfully combines authentic Mauritius with high end sustainable chic.

Just 100m from the beach and enveloped in a lush green nature reserve, this secluded hotel has made a conscious effort to blend in with its stunning surroundings and where possible use sustainable initiatives to preserve the natural environment. The resort successfully brings the beauty of the outdoors indoors using lots of locally sourced materials around the property. Recycled volcanic stone combined with a scattering of driftwood crafted by local artisans, touch everything from the reception, bedrooms and restaurants. At the heart of the resort is the spectacular 30-metre ozone-based infinity pool which uses fewer chemicals and is more efficient than a regular pool. Other eco touches include solar technology for water heating in all the guest rooms, water is reused for irrigation and cleaning and the food waste goes out to local farms.

Each of the 164 stylish rooms and suites are spacious and sophisticated with clean lines and minimal décor enhanced with a splash of ocean blue and wood making it feel warm and welcoming. Wake up and take in the views of the Indian Ocean or flourishing tropical gardens direct from your day bed on the balcony. For me the measure of a hotel is in the bathroom and I loved the large double sinks and rain shower but the jewel in the crown was the free standing bathtub that dominated the room, perfect for a long soak at the end of the day. Eight luxury Pool Villas will be available to book from April 2020.

Anantara is a foodie’s dream, under the watchful eye of Executive Chef, Didier Jacob the resort offers multiple dining options that reflect the island’s rich cultural heritage. Taste the authentic flavours and influences of Mauritius at one of the amazing five restaurants. For me, staying at Anantara was a real culinary experience. I got to jump into the Island’s foodie culture and savour cuisine with French, Indian and Creole influences. A huge highlight was the private dining offer where you can indulge in something a bit special with your own bespoke menu, personal chef and private butler. The hotel set up a private table on the beach where I got to soak up the remarkable setting, outstanding views of the ocean and enjoy some delicious dishes under the stars.

It’s easy to relax at Anantara, kick back and get into the Mauritian vibe. The team of attentive staff quickly make you feel welcome and go all out to make sure you enjoy your stay. Reset and reconnect at the onsite spa where you can unwind with a range of therapeutic treatments including traditional massage therapies, detox treatments and hammam wellness. My energy levels are always high and at times I struggle to wind it down a notch so retreating to the spa was a great way for me to switch off and slow down. I soon loosened up with one of the signature massages and a few days into my stay I was back for the hammam treatment, I left feeling relaxed yet invigorated.

There’s plenty to do on this south east corner of the island, if you don’t want to relax on the beach or by the pool. Just 15 minutes’ drive away is Mahebourg, a cute picture postcard town with a pretty harbour and vibrant, bustling market, perfect for exploring. Don’t leave without swimming in the Indian Ocean, take a catamaran trip to get a unique view of this beautiful island, catch the sunset and go for a swim before heading back to shore. Mauritius is steeped in history and the hotel hosts campfire chats on the beach after dinner with their resident ‘Man in Mauritius’, Marcel Noe, who brings to life the island’s historic battles between the British and French. Enjoy the anecdotal tales delivered with knowledge and passion while roasting marshmallows over the fire. A little further away is Black River Gorges National Park, famous for its waterfalls, vistas and hiking, and for the more adventurous, quad biking and zip lining.

Whether you’re a beach lover, culture and history buff, nature enthusiast, foodie or sporty adventurer, Anantara has something for everyone and I can’t way to go back. Mauritius you really were something special!

A stay at Anantara Iko Mauritius Resort costs from £335 (390 Euros) per room per night on a half board basis. For more information visit www.anantara.com

Cardiff is a city in the UK that our writer Rachel McAlley had never visited and it was on her 2019 bucket list, so when she was asked if she would like to stay at the contemporary voco St David’s on behalf of House of Coco Magazine she jumped at the chance.

The drive from Yorkshire took a whopping 7 and half hours, but when she arrived she couldn’t have asked for a better welcome.

I arrived with my fiancé and our daughter to a very warm welcome from the check-in team. We were offered Welsh Cakes as a gift upon arrival, which were super tasty and a wonderful treat to enjoy at reception.

The Christmas decorations adorned the front of the hotel and inside the main lobby area, with a number of stunning Christmas trees dotted around the seating and lift areas, all twinkling and bright.

We were offered a hand with luggage to our first floor room, and once on the first floor we realised how stunning the atrium was, with a view overlooking the entire atrium from the ground floor to the top floor, and once in the room our view was of the waterfront at Cardiff Bay and all the boats moored in the bay area.

After checking out the gorgeous room, with two double beds, large flat-screen TV, good-sized table and excellent wardrobe space, we decided to unpack and head straight to the leisure facilities and have a swim in the voco St David’s swimming pool.

Plenty of fun was had in the pool, a relaxing swim and a little time spent in the Jacuzzi before heading into the changing rooms to get ready for dinner. We popped our swim gear back in the hotel room and went for a pre-dinner drink in the hotel restaurant followed by dinner. It was filled with happy revellers at their annual Christmas party, which meant that the atmosphere was electric and buzzing with talk of shopping, presents and Santa.

The restaurant was a seriously comfortable place to dine with large sofas and wide relaxing chairs at each table, with oodles of space between tables, and even though every single table was taken, there was never a sense of chaos or being rushed to leave, we spent a good 2 hours at the table enjoying dinner.

We opted for salt and pepper calamari, a bread basket, and san choy bow (lettuce and spicy beef wraps) to start with, followed by a rib eye steak, house burger, and kids chicken lollipops, and we were too full for dessert! The lettuce and spicy beef wraps and the steak were the standout dishes from the meal.

Back to the room, for an evening of TV, a cup of tea, and a great night’s sleep in the comfiest of beds.

Breakfast was served in the restaurant and was one of the best we have had in a long time, the selection was vast and spanned across two different restaurant rooms with breads and pastries being served on the bar, fruit, cereal, cheese, juices and yoghurts from a large table in the bar area, and hot food including the full Welsh breakfast, pancakes, and waffles in a side restaurant room.

The breakfast really was something to rave on about, and the choices were immense, plus an extra menu for all the dishes not served on the hot plates including; eggs Benedict, porridge, kippers, vegan dishes and more from the on table menu. What a great way to kick start the day.

We decided to venture into Cardiff for a browse and to do some sightseeing. We started the day by taking a lovely brisk walk from voco St David’s across to Mermaid Bay where we caught the water bus around the bay area into Cardiff Castle gardens, where we embarked and enjoyed a stroll into the city.

After a day spent Christmas shopping, visiting St David’s shopping centre, and the gorgeous quaint streets of High Street Arcade, Royal Arcade, and Castle Quarter Arcade, we spent the late afternoon wandering the Cardiff Christmas Market which was filled with the smell of mulled wine, and German hot dogs – and a wonderful Christmassy atmosphere.

Once back at voco St David’s we dressed for dinner and booked a table at the hotel restaurant for our final evening in Cardiff Bay. There was a lovely singer performing an ambient selection of songs in the restaurant whilst we dined and watched the Saturday evening go by.

Post dinner we took a sneaky peak at the Christmas party room that was in full swing, and it looked fantastic, each table was covered with pretty festive place settings and Christmas crackers.

Back to the hotel room for a little Saturday night TV, and an emotional 8 year old who didn’t want to leave Voco St David’s the following morning.

Checkout was as easy and wonderful as check-in, with the reception team chatting about our visit to Cardiff and our thoughts on the hotel, which I can honestly say were excellent.

Perfect for business, ideal for a couples getaway, and fantastic for families – what more you do you need from a hotel in the capital of Wales.

If you are thinking of visiting Cardiff in the near future we can’t recommend the 5-Star voco St David’s highly enough, from the friendly and welcoming staff to the comfortable spacious room, and the tasty restaurant food to the remarkable Cardiff Bay location, this really is a stunning hotel with breathtaking views and an unbelievably relaxed and contemporary ethos.

If you’re looking to plan the PERFECT doggy road trip with your four-legged best friend, look no further, because #TeamCocopup Charlie has got you covered. We embarked – on what could potentially be – the dreamiest dog-friendly road trip ever created. Our next stop takes us St Ives to ultra-luxurious beachfront lodges at Carbis Bay. Safe to say, you haven’t seen a beach house like this before.

The Carbis Bay Hotel is a modern British paradise, and the newly opened beach lodges – are nothing short of spectacular. Carbis Bay Hotel is located right on St. Ives beach and offers an unparalleled luxury beach experience. In fact, the risk in describing the beach lodges at Carbis Bay is that you might run out of superlatives.

We stayed in the luxury lodge, which was three floors of seaside chic. The top floor is your own private roof garden and sundeck, which features your own Villeroy & Boch hot tub. The second floor features three en-suite bedrooms, two of which have their own panoramic sea views of St. Ives beach. The master bedroom also has a handsome roll top bath. Oh, and did we mention that the Perrin & Rowe bathrooms had heated floors too?

Down the concrete spiral staircase (another striking design feature), you will find a generous sized open lounge and dining area and a bottle of champagne upon arrival. At the lounge, Jose Baker’s relaxing coastal interiors greets you, before your eyes meet the floor-to-ceiling windows. The lounges feature a remote-controlled fireplace, Bang & Olufsen sound system, a fully stocked kitchenette, and all the luxury amenities you didn’t even know you needed. Every beach lodge has its own private sundeck and garden, and private beach access too.

Step outside into your beach garden and make your way to St. Ives beach. It is the perfect place to spend an afternoon with your pup – just be ready for some sandy paws.

Outside of the beach lodges, there’s plenty to explore in Carbis Bay Hotel. The Hotel’s Beach Restaurant is dog-friendly and offers plenty of coastal delicacies, while the award-winning C Spa is perfect for a luxurious pampering treatment. The only problem you will find with the Carbis Bay, is that you’ll never want to leave.

Edinburgh is a smorgasbord of divine restaurants perfect for that date night that’s always postponed or for a random stumble into a dimly-lit oasis illuminated by fairy lights with show-stopping food to boot. In this haggis and whisky-filled capital, romantic restaurants are rife and each is different to the rest. So, sláinte to love at Edinburghs Most Romantic Restaurants…

Café St Honore

Edinburghs Most Romantic Restaurants

If you can’t escape the trappings of Edinburgh to enjoy Paris by candlelight then just head to Café St Honore instead. This charming spot, awash with wine bottles and white tablecloths, is like being sat in a nook and cranny off Paris’ Latin Quarter when instead you’re a short walk from the goings on of George Street. The food is experimental and seasonal, the glassware sparkling and the atmosphere as romantic as it comes.

The Witchery

Autumn and Halloween inspire thoughts of rich reds, oranges and browns, with oak, leather, stone and dark nights lit by candles that enlarge gothic shadows, with the smells of grills and game. If you’re dining for romance in the autumn, choosing a restaurant with the name The Witchery is quite apt and it will not disappoint. Created in 1979, its historic buildings date from 1595 and with James Thomson OBE, Scotland’s best-known hotelier and restauranteur and an ambassador for Scottish tourism running the romantic show, you’re in good hands with your cordial courting.

Stone walls for that knight in shining armour feel entice you in and your autumn colours are mingled in the décor of red leather seating, painted ceilings with heraldic theme and more antique candlesticks than the blushes of your beau. This restaurant will tick all on your foody shopping list so once seated in this velvety gothic environment by original oak-panelled walls, you’re sampling Scotland’s best-sourced food, including native Oban oysters, a Witchery haggis starter, Isle of Mull scallops, Scots border beef or a Vegetarian dish of foraged mushroom risotto.

Rhubarb at Prestonfield House

Opulence is the order of the day at charming Prestonfield House. Rhubarb, housed inside, is as sweet as its name and casts a spell on all who step through its doors. Fresh Scottish food features heavily on the menu, and the menu itself is nothing but fine dining and makes for the perfect place to woo. Approaching the building, you’ll be greeted by spellbinding trees, before exploring the many low-lit corners of the house to enjoy a pre or post-dinner drink.

Forage and Chatter

This Alva Street venue is a basement restaurant accessed via stone steps, winding foliage and fairy lights. Here, amongst cosy booths, low-lighting and tartan, you’ll feast in a rustic setting, with seasonal fare from a to-the-point menu arriving swiftly to your table.

The intimate setting makes for a highly romantic date night destination and the presentation of the food is simply unrivalled, as is the soothing soundtrack to your dining that distracts from the chatter of other tables. With the likes of halibut with roasted baby vegetables and chicken thigh with white onion on the menu, you’d be a fool not to go…

The Stockbridge Restaurant

If you’re a sucker for low-lighting and gorgeous interiors then The Stockbridge Restaurant is your date night go-to. Here, you’ll find a roaring fireplace for snug winter meals, white tablecloths and statement artworks by Scottish Colourists. There’s no wonder this charming little spot was named as one of the top 100 restaurants in 2014, especially with a menu brimming with moreish delights such as spiced pigeon breast and grilled halibut.

The Tower

Scotland’s first and finest rooftop restaurant describes this with Edinburgh’s skyline as a delightful backdrop. Situated at the top of the National Museum of Scotland, you can overlook Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and the Old Town. Another of James Thomson’s experiences and sister restaurant to The Witchery, your romantic dinner will include locally sourced food, an inventive wine list in a chic and glamorous setting.

A great romantic dining experience for the Festive season with exceptional game and grills, this is an A list in central Edinburgh. “Exquisite oyster and shellfish” says The Independent and another visitor to its culinary classics has been Joanna Lumley, OBE who describes The Tower “Tower you are fab!”

Chaophraya

Setting your romantic scene for a slightly later night carry-on, the cocktail bar at the Chaophraya is 12 pm to late! Beforehand, take a seat for the A la Carte, Set or Vegetarian choices at this delightful Thai food restaurant. The views up top are breathtaking and overlook Edinburgh Castle.

It’s a great choice for dining for two with a start or sharing dishes with the Khun Kim Grill Satay Platter, which includes sirloin steak, chestnut mushrooms and aubergine and cherry tomato skewers, or the Chaophraya Platter, delicious with choices of Thai chicken tacos, curried battered prawns and crispy duck salad. The Vegetarian is there with rich curry chicken and coconut on a lightly pan-seared rice flour taco. In this romantic Thai setting, you can relax all evening chatting away until the wee early hours.

Harvey Nichols Restaurant

If your romantic day is incorporating shopping for cufflinks and cardholders for him or perfumes and playsuits for her, slip up to the 4thfloor restaurant at Harvey Nichols and round a perfect day off with a fantastic view over Edinburgh city at one end and the Firth of Forth on the other.

Your taste buds will lap up a menu of starters of Haggis croquettes, tomato gazpacho or roasted fig, then the mains including pan-roasted stone bass, saffron-poached sole fillet or Kirkaldy farm buffalo fillet. Sides are there and so are delicious desserts but don’t get too full up because Harvey Nichols incorporates a Chocolate Lounge, a Brasserie and a 4thfloor Window Bar you might accidentally drift into, for a Pomme Pomme or Silent Night, sparkling cocktails of course!

Nestled just north of St Maarten and 100 miles south east of the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla might not be the obvious choice when it comes to booking a Caribbean getaway, but for unpretentious solitary luxury away from the traditional tourist trail, it can’t be beaten.

This dream of an island suffered a battering at the hands of Hurricane Irma in 2017 but she’s back shining brighter than ever, with icing sugar beaches, a gastronomy scene among the best in the Caribbean and some stunning accommodations, from easy beachfront living to serious refined luxury.

Zemi Beach House falls towards the latter. Situated on Shoal Bay East in the north east of the island, it’s home to only 65 rooms across its six acres. The beachfront property is the very epitome of intimate; while its sprawling suites and beach villas might afford you all the space you need, the layout of the resort still feels deliciously private.

An experience anchored in tropical luxury, rooms are designed drawing inspiration from nature, with cane furniture, muted tones, Brazilian wood furnishings and sinks created from petrified wood in the enormous bathrooms. Each also has a view of the sea, the pleasure in which is not to be underestimated when enjoying a sundowner on your balcony and listening to the waves lap the shore.

For those who might be travelling en famille, the villas – opening out on to the beach – come equipped with full kitchens, laundry facilities, private pool access and the option to keep your fridge fully stocked throughout your visit. Alternatively the penthouse suites – favoured by certain A-listers, we heard – offer an unrivalled experience of rooftop pools and uninterrupted views of the bay.

Zemi’s spa is one of its stunning selling points. Built around a 300 year old Thai house that was trasported from Chiang Mai and rebuilt on the island, piece by piece, it offers an authentic Thai experience from the moment you cross the threshold. It’s home to the island’s only hammam, a meditation garden, an outdoor yoga deck with early morning classes, a peaceful enclave of shady hammocks for a post-treatment snooze and a body temperature vitality pool. A team of trained therapists provides a range of holistic treatments, including rejuvenating facials, marine salt scrubs, tropical scrubs and massages designed to improve circulation, hasten detoxification and release everyday tension.

While it’s a family-friendly resort, the adults-only infinity pool is a definite plus; surrounded by sun-drenched cabana beds and fringed with palm trees, it’s a peaceful alternative to the family focused main pool, looking out on to the beach. With sunscreen, bug spray, towels and water placed by the pool for guests to help themselves, and fresh fruit skewers handed out in the afternoon, it’s those little extra touches that make for a truly luxurious experience.

Despite the island being rich pickings when it comes to great food, Zemi’s offering is not to be sniffed at. The beachfront breakfast is irresistible, a literal toes-in-the-sand start to your day, while by night the restaurant transforms into a beachfront buffet with an every-changing menu, from an international menu to a local Caribbean night resplendent with hog roast and fresh grilled lobsters. Zemi prides itself on being a culinary celebration of sustainability, with its cuisine marrying fresh island seafood with imported delicacies, local herbs and seasonal produce.

For those after something a little more special, Stone is the resort’s fine dining restaurant, with a hand-crafted menu and fine wine list. For a post-prandial beverage, the elegant Bohio Bar & Lounge is open late with a dazzling cocktail menu, while the stunning Rhum Room offers over 100 small-batch, single-estate rums in its refined and elegant tasting room.

For a sublimely intimate experience, Zemi Beach House was a wonder of a hotel. From the freshly-baked cookies left on the pillow at turn down, to the beach bag in the wardrobe upon arrival and the makeup eraser cloth left in the bathroom, not details was left unthought of, and it’s little things like that which will keep guests coming back for more.
