The Balvenie Sweet Toast of American Oak 12-Year Old

The first addition to the coveted The Balvenie Stories range – a collection of single malt whiskies representing tales of character, endeavour and generational knowledge – the Sweet Toast of American Oak 12-Year-Old was designed to produce an even fruitier, sweeter single malt. Apprentice Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie had the idea to import heavily toasted Virgin Oak Barrels from Kentucky and, after deep toasting them again at The Balvenie cooperage, they were filled with 12-year-old whisky aged in ex-bourbon barrels at The Balvenie distillery for two months. Resulting in a delectably complex whisky with notes of candied fruit, coconut and delicate vanilla, this is a sweet toast for this Mother’s Day and pairs perfectly with baked cheesecake for a meal near or afar this year.

The Balvenie Sweet Toast of American Oak 12-Year-Old is available for purchase online from The Whisky Shop for £50.00 (RRP 70cl).

It’s International Women’s Day and this year, like most of our activities, every celebration has gone virtual. So the question is, how can you celebrate this iconic and progressive day? Bombay Sapphire has partnered with Katy Hessell, founder of The Great Women Artists, and organised a virtual event.

Bombay Sapphire is a brand with women at the helm of its creativity and success, including Dr. Anne Brock, the brand’s Master Distiller. Collaborating on this International Women’s Day Panel seems like the perfect venture for one of our favourite gin brands.

Inspiring Women Panel

Showcasing females of the future across the arts and drinks industries, the conversation will focus on what stirs each woman’s creativity. Katy will be hosting a line up of inspirational women, featuring gin gurus to badass bartenders.

The panel members will include:

  • Anne Brock, Bombay Sapphire’s Master Distiller and gin guru
  • Anna Sebastian, The Artesian Bar’s Bar Manager and creative powerhouse behind its cocktail menu
  • Sandrae Lawrence, cocktail connoisseur
  • Faye Wei Wei and Charlotte Edey, contemporary artists

The past year has been especially tough on the hospitality industry and everyone has had to learn to adapt. As part of the event, each talented female will share their creative experiences and how they’ve adjusted amidst a pandemic. From new creative mediums to virtual bars, it’s all been a new chance at connecting with their audience in an alternative way.

This panel talk is part of Bombay Sapphire’s Stir Creativity platform. Both Sandrae and Anna will be showcasing how the iconic blue-bottled gin can be the perfect canvas for cocktail creativity. With two bespoke drinks with which to celebrate International Women’s Day, viewers will have the chance to put their mixology skills to the test.

The panel will take place later this evening – Monday 8th March, from 7pm – 8.30pm. Tickets are available on a ‘pay what you feel’ basis via Eventbrite. All proceeds from ticket donations will go to charity: the choice being female fellows at the Artist Benevolent Fund.

We can’t wait to see you there…

Here at House of Coco, we’re championing the hospitality industry as much as we can. They’ve taken such a hit in the past 12 months that we’re here to support them as much as we can. Especially new places that are opening which is why we’re really excited about what’s coming for Leeds.

A new rooftop bar and plant-based eatery, The Green Room, is set to open on Wellington Street this summer. This newest addition to the Leeds nightlife and leisure scene is a collaboration between young entrepreneurs Will Habergham and Pj Gardner.

Inspiration

Inspiration for the concept initially came from New Zealander Will. Following a trip down under visiting family and friends, he returned with a vision for opening a multifunctional venue that could be a coffee shop by day, bar by night.

Both Will and Pj are familiar faces in the leisure industry having worked for the past decade in clubs, events, music and festivals and crossed paths whilst working the club scene. They quickly realised not only did they have a mutual passion for music and nightlife but also recycling and sustainability. Fast forward 2 years, that passion has become a reality, and this summer, The Green Room is set to open its doors.

Co-Founder Will Habergham said “Having worked all my life in the nightlife and leisure industry, I’ve seen how trends have changed not only in how we socialise and attitudes towards the environment but also in how we work. Due to the impact of the pandemic and the trends towards a healthier lifestyle, people’s perception of the work/play balance has been forced to change, and we wanted to create a space that can accommodate those lifestyle changes and beliefs.”

Transformation

During the pandemic, this forward-thinking duo have been working relentlessly to transform a historic building in the heart of Wellington street. The striking building with an impressive terrace is located next door to the newly renovated Majestic building, home to the new Channel 4 HQ and seconds away from Leeds City Station.

Inspired by the heritage of the building, the site’s transformation commenced in Nov 2020 with an entire renovation. Previously an old members club, phase one has seen over 70 metric tons of waste removed and recycled from the site.

Co-Founder Pj Gardner speaking about his passion about the environment and sustainability commented: “We wanted to bring our vision to life and create a space that is in line with our beliefs and core values and create an environment focusing on wellbeing and sustainability while still enjoying all the benefits of nightlife. Our aim is not to send any waste to landfills and always recycle. Although the site has been completely gutted and renovated, we have tried to keep as many of the building’s original features, such as the original flooring and used décor and fittings from other reclaimed or recycled sources where possible.”

The developers behind the renovation, All Property Management Ltd, have ploughed £3 million in transforming this ground-breaking scheme. All Property Management are no strangers to unique and high spec developments and are the brains behind several schemes in the region, including The Bells Hotel, Briggate Boutique and Carr Hall Castle to name but a few.

As well as enhancing some of the building’s original features, charm and character, the developers plan to incorporate lots of greenery into the decor, an eclectic blend of industrial fittings, reclaimed furniture complemented by ‘warm’ soft furnishings.

Roof Top Terrace

One The Green Rooms unique features is the impressive rooftop terrace that spans over 1500 sqft. With a south-facing view, the sun-filled terrace makes the perfect location for alfresco dining, pop-up parties and summer BBQ’s.

Will said; “The Rooftop terrace is our USP, and due to COVID, outdoor spaces are vitally more important. The terrace’s size not only allows people to sit comfortably in an outdoor space but also allows to put any future social distance measures in place. By day the terrace will make the perfect setting for people who need a relaxed environment to work from, brunches, lunches, and by night the perfect setting for after-work cocktails and sunset music led events. In the winter months, we plan to utilise the space for pop-up markets or similar outdoor events that have become so much more important over the last year. We are so excited to bring our vision to life and create a unique and creative space where customers can enjoy the bar and restaurant and utilise the space to work from, or simply socialise.”

Plant-Based Eatery

The impressive duo aims to be at the forefront of plant-based dining in the city and hope to change some of the biggest sceptics’ palates. With its all-day menu, the Green Room promises to offer a range of interesting and tasty plant-based dishes that will appeal to all taste buds and will utilise ingredients sourced both locally and ethically. An enticing experience awaits those who might have previously never considered such a healthier and sustainable option.

Pj, who has been fully plant based for two years wants to prove that vegan food can be tasty, accessible and as more-ish as anything dairy or meat based.

“We want to be pioneers in the plant food business and The Green Room will be at the forefront of changing people’s perception about what plant-based food is. It’s not just about salads and pulses, the menu will be a mix of Asian inspired healthy bowls, but for those food junkies there will be a selection of tasty vegan burgers, pizzas and even vegan dirty fries! More recently people’s attitude and perception to vegan food is changing. We wanted to go out on a limb, make our mark and not just offer a standard bar menu with 2 or 3 veggies and vegan choices.”

Co-founder Will encourages people to step out of their comfort zone…

“I’m not a vegan but live a healthy lifestyle and care about the environment, so I feel it’s important that we try and educate people on the benefits of a lifestyle change. We are not here to judge or ram it down anyone’s throat; our approach is very laid back in a very relaxed, cool bar setting which will hopefully help towards changing people’s perceptions of what they consume. Try it; you don’t have to be vegan every day; you might be pleasantly surprised!”

Pandemic

As with most people in the leisure industry, the pandemic has undoubtedly taken its toll on the duo, and there were some uncertain moments.

“We weren’t overly worried in the first lockdown as we were still in the planning and building phases, so if anything, it gave us the time to channel all our energy into the project. However, by the 2nd and now 3rd lockdown, there were uncertain moments when we thought, have we done the right thing? However, since Boris’s announcement, we are confident that we are back on track and ready to open once the world turns back to normal.”

The Green Room is expected to open to the public in late Spring early summer and is, without a doubt, going to be a great addition to the already thriving Leeds bar and restaurant scene. Embrace the change and try something different!

Coffee is a magic drink that most of us rely upon to feel a burst of energy. Different people have different types of association with coffee. Some people drink it for the taste while others benefit from it. There are different kinds of coffees in the world with varying caffeine levels. Pour-over coffee is gaining popularity due to the rich and authentic taste. The benefits you need to know about pour-over coffee are many. However, some people are unaware of what a pour-over coffee is and how it tastes.

People in the western part of the world like to explore different kinds of coffees. There are innovations every day, and coffee is one area that is subjected to it the most. There is green coffee, also known as “matcha,” which is rich in antioxidants. It has a lot of health benefits that health experts rave about. Similarly, pour-over coffee also has many benefits that are unknown to many people. It is crucial to select coffee based on its taste and how it makes you feel. This article is all about the health benefits of pour-over coffee and how you can make your own. Let’s begin with the benefits you need to know about pour over coffee!

What is a pour-over coffee?

If you are a coffee addict or a coffee lover, then you must have seen or heard about pour-over coffee. Pour-over coffee is also known as filter coffee. People use a filter with fresh coffee beans within it. They pour hot water over the fresh coffee beans, and the water pours down the filter. The rich flavor of the pour-over coffee and high caffeine content are fantastic to boost energy. Many cafes make exceptional filter coffee, and people love it at the beginning of their day.

Why should you opt for pour-over coffee?

For many years, people have been making their coffees manually. While there is no drawback of brewing coffee manually, you can undoubtedly benefit from pour-over coffee. You may have seen a lot of skilled baristas making exceptional pour-over coffee. Sometimes, people think that they cannot master the best pour-over coffee. However, there are only a few simple steps through which you can master the art of coffee. The pour-over coffee ratio is hard to determine, and you need a few tries to strike the right balance. Worry not, as the Melitta® EPOS® has got you covered with the first-ever pour-over coffee maker with a grinder on-board that selects the coffee beans’ ratio on its own.

  1. Control each step

Some people are absolute control freaks, and they like to have a strong command over what they are having and in what ratio. If you like the rich taste smell of the coffee, then pour coffee is the one for you. When you pour hot water over the fresh coffee beans, it extracts the rich taste and flavor—the hot water is integrated with coffee oil and fragrance. In the end, you get a quality cup of coffee that smells and tastes pure.

  1. Rich taste

If you look at the benefits of drip coffee vs. pour over, you will get to know that pour over coffee has a much richer taste. It is essential to note that some people love to have a rich coffee taste. If you go to a coffee shop to buy yourself a coffee, you will notice that not all coffees make you feel alive. If you are looking for a sudden boost in your energy and feel awake, then pour over coffee should be your ultimate choice. When hot water saturates with pure coffee and gushes down the filter, you get a high-quality coffee mug.

Are you still confused? Check out the guide from the House of Coco Team to know more about making coffees here.

  1. Easy to make

We all are in a rush in the morning, and nobody has got time to make elaborate cups of coffee. What does a person do when they have to rush out of the door and need a caffeine boost? Well, you can always use an automatic pour-over coffee maker. You will get your hands on coffee in merely seconds. The rich blend of coffee, along with a rich aroma, is ideal for coffee addicts. You can choose your pour-over coffee grind size and get a rich taste.

How to make a pour-over coffee?

People are utterly convinced by the power of coffee. Some people start drinking coffee at a very young age as it gives them a sudden burst of energy. As you grow old, you tend to steer clear of ready-made and instant coffees. People often crave the authentic taste, which leads them to evaluate pour-over coffee vs. the French press. The French press has been the ultimate jam of a lot of people for years. However, if you are craving for a change, then pour over coffee will work exceptionally. Let’s see how you can make a pour-over coffee.

It is effortless to make a pour-over coffee, and you need only two to three things to make it. To make the best pour-over coffee, you need to boil water for about 5 to 7 minutes. Use a coffee filter and put your favorite coffee grinds in it. Pour the hot water over the coffee filter and wait for the water to transfer to the cup. Well, your coffee is ready, you can enjoy it in the morning or the middle of the day with a friend. Still not get it? Check the Real Simple for the perfect recipe.

People also use pour-over coffee makers to make the coffee. There are plenty of coffee makers available in the market you look into and buy your favorite one.

Conclusion

People cherish one thing or the other in their lives, and most people love coffee. Coffee is a ride-or-die for many people as it helps them to power through the day. Pour-over coffee is not a new style of making coffee, but it has recently started gaining popularity. The benefits you need to know about pour-over coffee are numerous. It is not only easy to make, but it also provides a rich taste like no other. If you start having pour-over coffee, there is no turning back.

“The problem is that humans have victimized animals to such a degree that they are not even considered victims. They are not even considered at all. They are nothing; they don’t count; they don’t matter. They are commodities like TV sets and cell phones. We have actually turned animals into inanimate objects – sandwiches and shoes.”
