Taste London returned to Regent’s Park this June for it’s ninth year and whilst this food festival is well established and firmly marked in the calendar of London and out of towner foodies alike, attendees can always guarantee each edition will feel new and exciting with the promise of some of the best chefs, culinary people of note and producers alike.

This year was no different as crowds gathered under blue skies to witness the likes of Big Zuu and Ben Tish demo BBQ skills, sample goods from two Michelin starred chef Henrique Sa Pessoa, enjoy offerings from some of the capitals best restaurants including STK, Hoppers and Macceleio plus masterclasses and workshops.

Taste is a one stop shop for both experienced food lovers and those just starting out in their ‘holy moly I think I’m a foodie’ journey to come together and experience the best the capital has to offer. London is known for its culinary innovation and creativity and Taste manages to break down barriers and ensure some of the best chefs are accessible to everyone. Restaurants with long wait lists and high price tags allow everyone to sample their wares.

I have always championed the notion that food is more about than what is put on the table, it is about bringing people together, sharing plates, grunting at each other in sheer joy as morsel after morsel is consumed, discussing favourite bites and personal preferences and nothing showcases this better than Taste London – sitting and watching the crowd gently sway from one vendor to the next, trying samples, sipping drinks, taking a pew on an inflatable avocado whist pondering the next restaurant to hit. Everyone is there for the same reason, to rejoice in some of the best gastronomy our fair city has to offer.

The diversity on display at Taste is part of what makes the festival so magic – this year’s highlights included Visit Portugal showcasing some of the countries best chefs along with live fire masterclasses at Flames of Portugal Churrasco Cook School, Korean American Iron chef Judy Joo, vegan Caribbean specialists Likkie Dutch Pot plus and the OG Ramen slingers, Bone Daddies to name but a few.

Winning the title of best plate for me personally was the Hoppers Goat Taco which two weeks later, I am still thinking about – pulled goat shoulder sitting on top of a roti ‘taco’, garnished with gram crisps, herbs and pickled onions – it was a sensation!

After an amble around the park and a lap to pin point all the places we wanted to try, we walked to the VIP garden, arms laden with plates of the aforementioned taco, pork ribs, Korean wings and cocktails of Kulfi Colada slushis and Punjabi punch and here we sat, sated and watching the sunset over one of London’s best events, safe in the knowledge that London still remains king pin when it comes to food.

Mozzarella aficionados will love Obicà. Situated on Poland Street, in the heart of Soho this bustling, Mozzarella bar is dedicated to this classic Italian staple. I recently visited mid-week to sample their new summer menu.

The restaurant has recently undergone a major refurbishment. Set across two floors, Obicà is casual and contemporary. Lots of exposed brick walls and metal combine modern elements with rustic touches. A large bar and open kitchen run the length of the restaurant and add to the whole dining experience, providing a lively backdrop to your aperitivo. With a cosy heated terrace its perfect for sipping an Aperol and enjoying alfresco dining during the summer.

Now, let’s talk about the star of the show—the food. Obicà specialises in mozzarella, and their commitment to using fresh, high-quality ingredients is evident in every dish. While the menu is centred around showcasing this humble cheese it also includes a delightful fusion of traditional Italian cuisine with innovative twists. The staff here are passionate about what they do and take pride in delivering an exceptional experience. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and well-cared for. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu, readily offering suggestions and ensuring that each course was delivered promptly and presented beautifully. My waiter insisted I try their mozzarella special, a selection of varieties from a classic buffalo to a unique smoked mozzarella infused with herbs. Each bite was a burst of creamy goodness that highlighted the excellent quality of the cheese I’d recommend a couple of small plates to switch it up a bit from just cheese. The Prosciutto Crudo di Parma DOP aged 24 months and Bresaola di Chianina IGP perfectly complimented the velvety, rich ricotta di bufala. I’d also order the octopus, it’s tender, succulent and was cooked to perfection.

The wine list features a variety of Italian labels, expertly curated to enhance the flavours of the dishes. Our waiter recommended a Sereole Soave, with a floral bouquet and overtones of elderflower and citrus, it was perfectly paired with our starter.

The rest of the menu comprises of pizza, pasta, salads, meats, and fish where the finest ingredients are at the front and centre of each dish. I opted for a ‘Nduja pizza and in typical Italian style it was fabulous. The pizza here is prepared with flour from Molino Paolo Mariani and sourdough yeast left to rise for 48 hours before being stone baked and topped with organic tomato and fresh ingredients from some of the best suppliers in Italy. My date went for the Cacio E Pepe, Obicà’s pasta is produced in Gragnano with the finest of Italian durum wheat before being bronze drawn and dried using the traditional Cirillo method. We were far too stuffed to have a desert, but the menu is full of delicious options that includes traditional tiramisù, Ricotta di Bufala and lemon cake and torta caprese with ice cream.

Whether you’re a fan of mozzarella or simply seeking a memorable dining experience, this restaurant is a must-visit.

If you were to cut me in half, you would see that I am a Northerner through and through. You only need to follow me on social media for approx 0.1 seconds to hear me waxing lyrical about my beloved hometown of Leeds. From the familiarity, the interactions with locals every time I step foot outside my door and my knowledge of when the traffic lights are going to change in any part of the city, Leeds is the epitome of My Happy Place. With that in mind, the thought of leaving my city to move to London had never even entered my psyche. That was until I discovered Goodluck Hope.

Nestled along the picturesque River Thames, the Goodluck Hope development by Ballymore is capturing the hearts and imaginations of Londoners and now it seems, northerners too. Offering luxury riverside residences and architectural marvels inspired by the area’s rich maritime heritage, Goodluck Hope is more than just a housing project. It is an enchanting secret island neighbourhood that is rapidly becoming one of London’s most alluring lifestyle and cultural destinations.

From the moment you set foot in Goodluck Hope, you can sense the air of exclusivity and charm that permeates the neighbourhood. The development seamlessly combines contemporary design with a nod to the area’s historical significance as a bustling hub of maritime activity. Ballymore has masterfully crafted a haven where residents can revel in the tranquility of riverside living while being in close proximity to the vibrant heart of London.

Penthouse Perfection

As I stepped into the penthouse apartment at Goodluck Hope, I was instantly captivated by the blend of industrial inspiration and contemporary luxury. Named The Lofts, these penthouses were the latest addition to this vibrant riverfront neighbourhood in East London, and I was fortunate enough to spend a night in one of their stunning three-bedroom apartments. The total set consists of 19 deluxe properties, with two-bedroom offerings starting at £916,000. The Loft L1102, which I had the pleasure of experiencing, comes with a £1,990,000 price tag. As I entered the penthouse, I couldn’t help but be enamoured by the loft-style design concept, which instantly made me realise that every single penny would be money well spent.

Originating from the artistic neighbourhoods of New York in the ’50s and ’60s, this concept has now found its home in East London. The Lofts at Goodluck Hope embrace the essence of modern living with their open spaces, lofty ceilings, refined industrial aesthetics, and expansive windows that frame breathtaking panoramic views of the River Thames, the iconic O2 Arena, and the City skyline.

As a huge advocate for #remoteworking, given that I have been living the freedom lifestyle for the last 11 years, it was refreshing to see the new work-from-home culture, and flexible living space at The Lofts where they perfectly cater to this post-lockdown trend. Each penthouse has its own unique character, and ours boasted walled gardens and a spectacular terrace overlooking the tranquil Thames. It was the ideal venue for an unforgettable gathering and soirée, as well as a peaceful oasis for moments of relaxation and reflection. Oh, and some work, honest!

The attention to detail in the penthouse’s decor was simply outstanding. Carefully curated to reflect the maritime history of Leamouth Peninsula, the interior design showcased elegant yet eclectic elements. The living room boasted a striking nubuck camel leather “Tactile” sofa by Vicenzo De Cotiis for Baxter, an exquisite one-off terrazzo vase by Natascha Madeiski, and bespoke rugs by Silk Avenue. The space also featured upcycled vintage speakers by Concept Object, connecting me to the soulful melodies played on an old vinyl record player and I instantly felt at home when I spotted a copy of Bob Marley’s album!

Delightful touches of deep indigo blue were seamlessly incorporated throughout the penthouse. One standout piece was “Blue IV,” a captivating mixed media painting on canvas by Marian Waldemar Kuczma, perfectly capturing the essence and character of Goodluck Hope. Organic-looking mirrors crafted from polished stainless steel by Zieta Studio adorned the walls, creating a sense of depth and reflecting the shimmering Thames outside.

As the evening wore on, I found myself immersed in the luxurious ambiance and breathtaking views. The views alone deserve a chapter and verse because I have never witnessed anything so jaw dropping in the heart of London. Watching the O2 Arena go from day to night was a spectacle in itself.

Goodluck Hope had succeeded in creating a truly unique and enchanting living space, where industrial heritage seamlessly blended with contemporary comfort. The penthouse at The Lofts not only offered a stylish and dynamic home but also provided a sanctuary in the heart of London.

Architectural Marvels:

Each property within Goodluck Hope showcases impeccable design and attention to detail. The architecture pays homage to the neighbourhoods maritime past, with nods to shipbuilding and dockside warehouses. The combination of industrial elements and modern luxury creates a captivating aesthetic that sets Goodluck Hope apart from traditional developments. Whether you choose a chic apartment, a stylish townhouse, or a spacious penthouse, every residence exudes a sense of elegance and sophistication.

Exploring the Cultural Tapestry

Goodluck Hope is not only a residential paradise but also a thriving cultural hub. The development’s close proximity to London City Island ensures easy access to a wealth of artistic and intellectual experiences. One of the notable cultural institutions that have found a new home here is the English National Ballet, which relocated from its central location to join the vibrant East London scene. Their new building not only serves as a rehearsal space but also features an exhibition area and The Barre Room, a delightful supplier of breakfast treats.

In addition to the English National Ballet, Goodluck Hope is also home to the Arbyte Gallery, a captivating cultural institution that showcases a diverse range of artistic expressions. The neighbourhood is further enriched by the presence of the London City Institute of Technology, a prestigious university campus that fosters creativity and innovation.

Discovering Independent Businesses:

As a female entrepreneur, I know all too well about the importance of surrounding yourself with positive influences and and that’s one of the true joys of living in Goodluck Hope due to the abundance of independent businesses and retail outlets that dot the area. A glimpse at this retail map reveals a vibrant tapestry of unique stores, boutiques, and eateries that cater to diverse tastes and preferences. From trendy fashion boutiques to artisanal coffee shops, there is always something new and exciting to explore within the neighbourhood. This emphasis on local businesses not only fosters a sense of community but also adds to the distinct character of Goodluck Hope

Unveiling the Secrets:

The allure of Goodluck Hope extends beyond its architectural marvels and cultural offerings. The name itself begs the question of its origin, and while we are still uncovering its fascinating story, the mystery adds an extra layer of intrigue to this enchanting neighbourhood. As we continue to delve into the depths of Goodluck Hope, we discover hidden gems and surprises that make it a truly exceptional place to call home.

Goodluck Hope, the brainchild of Ballymore, has swiftly emerged as one of London’s most coveted lifestyle and cultural destinations. With its luxurious riverside residences, architectural grandeur, and a thriving cultural scene, it has captivated the hearts of residents and visitors alike. Goodluck Hope’s secret island neighbourhood is a testament to the power of blending contemporary design with historical influences, creating a haven that exudes both. But more poignant that any of that, if it’s made me consider leaving Leeds, then you know it must be special.

With the temperamental British weather finally making way for some glorious rays, the team at The Churchill Bar & Terrace on Portman Square is ready and waiting to welcome guests with a new cocktail menu and the opening of their summer terrace. Located inside the Hyatt Regency hotel, the award-winning art deco cocktail bar pays homage to some of the capital’s most iconic residents: Sir Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine (there’s even a life-sized bronze statue of a young Churchill sitting on a bench in the terrace).

Written by Guest Contributor Ina Yulo-Stuve

The team is serious about their cocktails and recently announced new additions to the squad, bar manager Gaston Fusco and head mixologist Mitsuhiro Nakamura, who join senior bartender Vitor Sousa. Fusco spent nearly a decade in the UAE, where he worked at luxury properties such as the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. His appointment coincided with the bar’s decision to double down on having sustainability as a focus for their menu.

“Nowadays, it is crucial for all of us to have an awareness of sustainability. It is something the world is placing a focus on and therefore, at the Churchill Bar & Terrace, we wanted to shine a light on it too and show care for the world we live in. It’s interesting to try to come up with ideas on how to do our bit to help through making delicious drinks!” says Fusco. Describing their ethos as “cocktails with a conscience”, the new menu, a 12-drink collection called UNITY, pays homage to the bar team’s different cultural backgrounds and traditions whilst staying both innovative and eco-conscious.

UNITY fuses the traditions and tastes of Asia, Europe, and the Americas to deliver an enticing offering that is best enjoyed al fresco, where the sustainability focus continues with specially chosen long-lasting flower displays throughout the terrace. Surrounded by lush greenery and colourful plants, guests will be taken on a trip around the globe with cocktails such as the fragrant, grassy, and bitter Be Mate—with bergamot liquer, bitter bianco, orange yerba mate, and peppermint perfume—based on a favourite drink from Fusco’s native Argentina; the vibrant, pleasant, and provocative Longitude 40°–bringing the flavours of fresh green grapes, Ginjo plum sake, Junmai Dagnjo sake, and elderflower liquer—inspired by the wine-making traditions of Sousa’s Portuguese family; or the mysterious, leafy, millennial Ikigai—a blend of dry Vermouth, fresh shiso, organic matcha, bamboo white tea cordial, and lemon juice—a crisp and clean choice from Nakamura’s home country of Japan.

Fusco says it was a real team effort to conceptualise every drink on the menu, but notes that he’s already seen an increased satisfaction from guests who appreciate being able to play their part in being more eco-conscious. “One of the opportunities we acknowledged was waste reduction. We saw the chance to collaborate with the kitchen and use elements of ingredients the chefs may not need, repurposing them for a different use.” He talks about the bar’s custom-made lab, where the team is encouraged to reinvent the status quo and challenge each other to think outside the box.

Nakamura, the former head bartender at renowned Tokyo outpost Peter: The Bar and a veteran of the international cocktail competition scene, will no doubt bring his flair for experimentation to an already thriving team. He says: “I am thrilled to be part of The Churchill Bar & Terrace’s team, whose acclaimed reputation and enticing drinks list focusing on sustainability is what drew me to the establishment initially.

Since attending a cocktail competition in this bar years ago, I have wanted to return. As an avid traveller, it has always been a dream of mine to bring my global knowledge to a new location, particularly one as exciting, energetic, and trend-setting as London, the pioneer city for the drinks industry, and so I very much look forward to combining all these aspects at The Churchill.”

Amidst the palpable excitement of the King’s Coronation, thousands of people across the nation are indulging in Afternoon Tea.

This culinary tradition started in the 19th century when the British aristocracy had a habit of eating only two meals a day: breakfast and dinner.

The Duchess of Bedford, who was a close friend of Queen Victoria, found herself getting hungry in the late afternoon. She decided to invite some friends over for tea and snacks to alleviate her hunger pangs.

The idea caught on, and soon Afternoon Tea became quite the fashionable social event. The menu included tea, sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and a selection of cakes and pastries. The ritual of drinking tea with milk and sugar, served in fine bone china cups, became a symbol of British culture the world over.

Fast forward to 2023 and Afternoon Tea remains a highly popular tradition, not only in Britain, but also in many parts of the world. Hotels and restaurants around the globe offer their take on this classic ritual, with various themes and creative twists.

One such example of this is the music-themed Afternoon Tea at the Middle Eight hotel in London’s Covent Garden in the heart of the city within walking distance to theatre land.

Their Covent Garden Crescendo menu is a delectable fusion of music teemed with delicious treats. All dietary requirements are catered for, although it’s best to give the hotel as much notice where possible in order to accommodate.

Served on an elegant serving tray, guests can enjoy a selection of sandwiches which includes the highly fashionable ‘Coronation Chicken’ which comes with a subtle yet tasty cured herby mayonnaise, grilled vegetable sandwiches which has a layer of hummus, and a dill-infused smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich. There’s also a herby sausage roll for meat eaters.

For those hankering after something sweeter, there’s a fantastic selection of sweet treats all of which are music themed. We absolutely adored ‘To the Best’ – a cloud-light lemon meringue tart with sweet lemon cream which was lighter than air and had a real kick to it.

‘Strike a Chord’ with its sweet centre of fresh raspberries sits atop a moist almond cake and is topped with a raspberry coulis and gold leaf.

One particular standout is the tangy ‘Blood Orange Opera’ paying homage to the music that surrounds the hotel. With layers of blood orange jelly, this moreish moresel also has citrus pannecotta which gives a sharp yet sweet taste that is unforgettable.

From the pistachio macarons with a dynamic treble clef emblazoned across the vibrant green disc filled with a buttercream to the nutty ‘Hazelnut Harmony’ choux delight, there’s truly something for everyone when it comes to the Middle Eight Afternoon Tea.

Can you really say you have had Afternoon Tea without indulging in a scone or two? Whether you pronounce it to rhyme with ‘bone’ or ‘gone’, you will love the vanilla and fruit scones that are topped with jam and clotted cream.

Whether you choose to team it with a glass of fizz or a cup of tea of which you can choose from traditional blends like Earl Grey, Lapsang and Darjeeling, or something a smidge more unusual like the intriguing Covent Garden blend which combines peppermint, black tea and blue cornflowers to create a full-bodied and slightly sweet yet spicy tea, your beverage of choice will elevate your Afternoon Tea to the next level.

As Alice Walker says ‘Tea to the English is really a picnic indoors’, whilst there isn’t much in the way of music weaved into the decor which is a little bit surprising, the room where you take the tea is light and stylish with an abundance of books everywhere and the staff are polite, efficient and friendly.

If you love music and feel that an Afternoon Tea is hard to beat, then head on over to the Middle Eight hotel in Covent Garden and enjoy a sweet symphony of treats!

The Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane is paying tribute to King Charles III’s love for British nature and his commitment to environmental conservation with a magnificent ‘King of Green’ installation in the hotel lobby, launching on May 3rd.

What sets this concept apart is the hotel’s decision to replant the entire installation in the garden terraces of Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane after the coronation. This sustainable approach ensures that the trees and plants will continue to thrive and contribute to the local ecosystem long after the coronation celebrations have ended.

The installation features native trees and plants that depict a mesmerising British woodland scene and will be on display from May 3rd to May 9th.

Guests and visitors will have a unique opportunity to admire a tribute to the breathtaking beauty of British flora while honouring King Charles III’s unwavering commitment to preserving it.

M Canary Wharf’s Barking Banquet

M Canary Wharf is hosting a Barking Banquet on Sunday, May 7th as a special edition of its Pooch Party series, just in time for the Coronation.

We love that M Canary Wharf is dedicated to making sure everyone has a good time – even the pups! And with the opportunity to show off your pup’s style on the royal runway, this event promises to be a howling good time.

You and your furry friend can indulge in a three-course brunch menu, either inside the restaurant or outside on the beautiful terrace. Savor delicious dishes like shakshuka, steak & eggs, or a seriously good pancake stack, while your four-legged friend enjoys chicken jerky ‘three ways’, biltong risotto, and peanut butter cookies from M’s Bone Appétit menu.

Make sure to book your spot for the Barking Banquet between 12 pm – 4 pm on Sunday, May 7th. Tickets cost £40, with £5 from each ticket being donated to Dogs Trust.
