If you’re a foodie then Sydney is for you, it’s all about eating out and eating well here and there is plenty to explore, especially if you’re a vegan or vegetarian. The plant-based space is becoming bigger, more diverse and much more creative as veggie joints continue to open across the city. Alongside the newness, what’s even better is when restaurants expand their menu to cater for those who choose a veggie lifestyle, which is exactly what Cruise Bar has done.

Cruise Bar is rather iconic, located in the bustling Circular Quay, its waterside and Opera House views are Instagram heaven. It’s a large and lovely space with a super laid-back eating feel which is great when you just want to grab a bite to eat in between sightseeing. Here at HOC, as you know, we just love exploring so what better way to spend a Wednesday than feasting on the freshly updated menu of Cruise Bar! Happy Hump Day indeed.

We ventured down to the waterside destination and enjoyed a delicious glass of red whilst we perused the menu; it certainly looked yummy and we were excited to road-test the new vegetarian creations which are all thanks to their Head Chef, Patrick Haney. We went straight for the house-made flatbread with walnut baba ghanoush, foraged hummus, muhammara and za’atar and greedily devoured the roasted cauliflower arancini with arrabbiata sauce too. We were off to a great start! Mains were just as delicious and the foraged green goddess salad with mixed greens, kale, cherry tomatoes, carrot, pear, walnuts and avocado croutons was divine. We also tried the mushroom and quinoa burger with foraged hummus, lettuce, roasted capsicum on a charcoal bun which was up there with some of the best veggie burgers we have ever tried, it came with fries too which was a naughty but nice addition. We rounded off the tasty evening with an indulgent Wood sorrel brûlée, a real treat and the best way to end a lovely evening enjoying Cruise Bar’s updated menu.

We were impressed and can’t recommend Cruise Bar enough as a place to visit for a flavorsome veggie dinner with a fantastic view. (Oh, and good wine too!)

It’s the calm before the big chill hits London, and with news of possible snowfall this week, everyone is hunkering down for the winter. In our humble opinion, there’s no better way to keep warm than with a nice glass of Irish Whiskey – and we think we’ve just discovered our favourite new malt.

On an extra-chilly London evening, we made our way to TT Liquor, a discrete little cellar bar on Kingsland Road, to celebrate the launch of Roe & Collective. A series of creative sessions crafted to reinvigorate the spirit of craftsmanship, with the help of some pretty strong spirits too, The project is a collaboration between creative studio Make.Your.Own, and Irish whiskey makers, Roe & Co; who not only share the same Irish roots, but also share the same mission to pay homage to age old crafts and heritage and reimagining the old to create the new.

The first edition of Roe & Collective sparked our creativity through a 25 minute calligraphy lesson. Not only did we learned how to elevate our penmanship; we also learned some pretty important whiskey related quotes. I learned the very valuable lesson that, ‘When life gives you lemons, make whiskey sours’. The evening also revealed the new ‘Roe’ming Tram’ — which is basically a mobile distillery that will bring Roe & Co’s creamy vanilla flavoured whiskey to thirsty Londoners all over town.

According to Alan Mulhivill, Roe & Co’s European brand ambassador, “We are so excited to have been joined by such a great crowd for the launch of Roe & Collective. Roe & Co is a unique blend of true Irishness and versatile modernity, and we hope these qualities shone through all elements of the event,” – After several glasses of whiskey, and some sheets of pretty decent calligraphy to take home, they have definitely succeeded in igniting our creative fires, and also a renewed love for whiskey.

No matter how advanced tourism becomes, The Palm in Dubai will always be one of the world’s most daring developments, thrusting out into the Arabian Gulf with its branches lined with some of the most jaw droppingly luxurious hotels and villas you’ll ever get within touching distance of. One of these is W Dubai – The Palm.

The hotel is a palace, but not the kind where laws are written and rules are obeyed. It’s a place for partying. The hotel glitters from every angle under the Arabian sun, and the building itself seems to rise up from the ground in a curvy, elegant sort of way. Here, you know you’re in good hands. At the very top of the hotel sits Akira Back, a panoramic restaurant with views over the iconic Marina skyline.

W hotels worldwide pride themselves on a pedigree of culinary offerings, and Dubai is no different. Akira Back is a professional snowboarder, turned adrenaline-fuelled culinary master. His restaurant blends modern tastes of Japanese cuisine with Korean flavours to create a fusion never seen in this part of the world before.

Akira Back, if you’re not familiar with the name, is someone who is familiar with a lot of names. From having restaurants and pop-ups across the world, including the infamous Yellowtail at the Bellagio in Vegas, he’s become a chef to the stars, with A-Listers on his list of regular diners.

His menus takes on a sharing culture to multiply the opportunities, where interesting ingredients are mixed with unexpected flavours.

In any ordinary setting, a tuna pizza would be a controversial choice to say the least, but anyone will agree that the Palm, or even Dubai, is anything but ordinary. Tuna pizza here is actually one of the most famous dishes.

Granted, it’s not the kind of pizza you wake up in bed with after a heavy night – it’s actually a tortilla with thinly sliced tuna sashimi, ponzu mayo and white truffle oil, with micro shiso scattered on the top. Forget what you know about pizza, because this is the future.

Ask any friend who’s dined with Akira Back and they’ll tell you not to leave without eating two things – the tuna pizza, and the AB Tacos. If you’re familiar with the magic that is Korean cooking, you’ll already be sold. These crispy tacos are stuffed with beef wagyu galbi and topped with ponzu sauce, which packs so much flavour you’ll be telling your friends about it too.

In a move that still makes Soho feel a bit like Soho (am I right, Londoners? Gosh darn you, gentrification!) once again exotic goods were available on Berwick Street in the form of Hong Kong street snack, Bubble Wrap.

As a curious alien hybrid of a crepe, waffle and a bubble tea vibe thrown in these delicious treats are soon to be taking the food scene by storm. Around since the 1950s the treat has hit our capital, first in street market form and in one week’s time in its rightful home on Wardour St. Bubble Wrap serves up delicious desserts with fresh fruits, nuts, sauces and ice-cream; what more could you want?!

We tucked into a delicious Pecan and Salted Caramel while our co-guinea pig went for the classic banana and chocolate combination; both were super indulgent and filling; this definitely a sharer after a dinner out… or a dinner replacement after a few brewskis.

Pop down to Bubble Wrap at 24 Wardour Street from 8th March! www.bubblewrapwaffle.com

Unity Diner has launched a 100% vegan and non-profit diner and bar in the heart of Spitalfields. The brand is on a mission to serve incredible plant-based comfort food, that’s not only made with love, but also directly helps bring about positive change for animals and the planet.

We were lucky enough to attend the launch party of their new venue where we tasted delights such as Prawn Tempura and Chikken Satay Skewers which were delicious and creepily similar to meat. We also enjoyed their range of creative cocktails including Piers Morgan’s Tears which changes colour when you add a vial of the daytime TV host’s ‘tears’. It is made from Gin, Cointreau, Pea Butterfly, Homemade Bay Leaf Syrup, Lime & Tonic Water.

Founded by vegan activist and enthusiast Ed Winters – otherwise known as Earthling Ed – Unity Diner’s profits go directly to an animal rights organisation, as well as the development of a brand new rescue sanctuary.

Designed for both vegans and flexitarians, Unity Diner pushes gastronomic boundaries and serves a menu of vegan alternatives to culinary classics. Its signature plate is its VFC ‘Zinga’ Burger, an entirely vegan twist on the popular Kentucky fried dish, which combines Soy Vegan Fried Chikken, a Zinga Patty, Hash Brown, Cheeze, Lettuce, Red Onion, Mayonnaise and Salsa in a bun.

With the days getting lighter and summer just around the corner, where better to cleanse from winter over-indulgence and get your glow back than at London’s newest no/low alcohol bar. Hospitality trailblazers The Initiative bring us their latest opening, Shaman in Leman Locke Aldgate.

Shaman is set to shake up London’s hospitality scene in 2020. Shaman has been created with healing, rejuvenation and self care in mind. The space is serving up a selection of fresh juices, pastries created by renowned chef Robin Gill, coffee and low/now alcohol drinks, ready to shift the assumption that bars can only be enjoyed with alcohol. Each fresh Shaman juice has been designed to improve gut health, increase energy levels and reduce stress levels. The space is also an Instagram dream with bright coloured drinks, cascading pot plants and pretty pastels.

The space is multi-functional, friendly and fresh with health and vitality as the order of the day. The cocktails were more delicious than any alcoholic drink we had ever tried. The Lavanderia was sophisticated and refreshing and the Vermuteria was punchy and warming. Afterwards we ordered a drink to go. We opted for the ‘skin glow’ juice was much needed after a long winter without a tan, and without turmeric.

Located in Aldgate East at the Leman Locke Hotel, Shaman combines effortless service with exquisite interiors, envisaged and executed by award-winning interior design agency, Grzywinski + Pons. Shaman is open to the public from 7am – 10pm to keep guests energised and hydrated all day long.

House of Coco sat down with the charming Elias Yiallouris of The Polo Bar Mayfair last week to chat about getting into hospitality, challenging Pierce Brosnan on his drink of choice and trends in food and drink. It went a little something like this…

HOC: Lovely to meet you in this rather snazzy bar, tell us a little about how you got here?

EY: In the old days hospitality was made of people who dropped out of school and to succeed you had to have a real passion for the industry. I was exposed to the industry when I was quite young and I started working at 14, completed a foundation course in hospitality and work my way through being a bar back, bartender and so forth.

It was probably only five years ago that immediate family started seeing this as a serious profession! Hospitality is often seen as something you do while filling time until you do the next thing.

I’ve worked in Claridges, Harvey Nichols and I’ve been here for 10 years in August. I still really enjoy it, here we have chance to try new things and keep pushing for excellence.

HOC: We’re meeting late morning on a weekday, I guess this place is quite different at the weekends?

EY: You wait, we’re always full at lunchtimes. We have our own kitchen serving sushi, foie gras, caviar. It’s a lot of people entertaining their clients and who I like to call ‘Mayfairians’ – people who live and work in this area. I like to claim territory here, it’s another pocket of the city; everything slows down and there’s a different pace of life.

That’s the beauty of London – there are different bar scenes depending on the postcode; Shoreditch, Notting Hill, Clapham all have their own approaches.

HOC: Outside of your bar, who do you think is doing great work in the bar world?

EY: If you want glamour and service, you need to look to the hotels. Claridges, The Connaught know how to balance taste, service and glamour. Sometimes service is the thing that suffers and why would you come out for a drink if you can make it at home if there’s no great experience?

Here our clientele are the people who make the city tick; the doctors of Harley Street, the lawyers. They don’t come here to be seen, they come here to be discrete.

HOC: What do you think of new trends in food and drink?

EY: We’re never content to do the same thing, we always need to keep pushing. We already change our menu by the season and aim to provide more ‘Wow’ factors. We’re looking at the design of the bar, running cocktail dinners and working on a new drink concept using sense and textures to choose your drink! The plan is that a box will come to your table full of fabrics for you to choose your fabric which is paired with a drink.

HOC: That sounds amazing, how do you think our relationship to alcohol is changing?

EY: We do seem to enjoy alcohol more now. There’s a real appetite for micro brewed beers and crafted cocktails. People’s education is changing and there are more chefs on TV which opens the imagination. People are also more adventurous when they are entertaining.

There’s also a trend for ‘healthy’ drinks which, I’ll be honest, is not something we’ve explored. I feel that if you are coming out for a good time, you can worry about it on Monday. I think you should think ‘I’m out for the night. I want to spoil myself’.

HOC: That’s a refreshing way to look at it! Thinking about the places you’ve worked you must have met some amazing people?

EY: Oh yes, I’ve been blessed with meeting many famous people. I once made a specific margarita for Paul and Stella McCartney which required a whole squeezed orange and no Cointreau. Madonna used to ask me to make her Cosmo whenever she came in with Guy Ritchie. Pierce Brosnan used to drink with us – a vodka martini with an olive. I remember telling him that he was taking the Bond role too seriously!

I do remember one night when we had Gwyneth Paltrow and a friend on one table, Madonna and Guy, George Clooney and Matt Damon, Bryan Adam, Paul and Stella all in the bar at the same time. I tell you who is the most gentlemanly of them all; The Lord of The Dance himself, Michael Flatley.

I always have believed it’s ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentleman. So it’s hard to get starstruck except for when it’s a real legend. We had Al Pacino staying in the hotel a little while back and he was a real gentleman; we closed the bar and stayed chatting with him a while.

HOC: Do you have anyone you’d love to make a drink for?

EY: I’ve never had the chance to service the Queen, that would really be the top of the London chain! I imagine she’d take a gin, a very dry, juniper-heavy, London gin.

HOC: Finally, what spirit tips do you have for the House of Coco readers, what should we be trying?

EY: Gin is still very dominant and summery – there seems to be a new gin every week! The days of asking for a Gordon’s, Bombay or Tanqueray are over. People want spirits that are artisanal, that more care has gone into. One I tried recently which was actually brought to me by a guest was The Botanist. The question is though, when does a gin stop becoming a gin if it has so many botanicals in it!

Japanese whisky is also on the up, its the fastest growing sector. There’s Nikka, Yamasaki, Hibiki – wonderful drinks!

On that note we wrap up and I am presented with some nibbles and a wonderful gin (hurrah!) cocktail with lavender. This #TeamCoco writer may become a ‘Mayfairian’ yet!

Here at House of Coco we love the Basque Country and we were hooked on the pinchos from our very first visit! We can’t hop on a flight every time we get a craving for this type of food but luckily we can head to Leeds city centre for our Basque dining fix in the form of Pintura.

Commenting on Experiencia Gastronomica, executive chef Greg Lewis, says:

“The Basque Country is the culinary epicentre of Europe and customers regularly ask for tips and tricks on cooking Spanish dishes at home. With Experiencia Gastronomica, we have created a tasting menu with a difference; allowing Yorkshire’s discerning diners to learn new culinary skills in a way that is both fun and in-depth.

Tickets are available to buy via Pintura’s website pinturakitchen.co.uk.

#TeamCoco pup Charlie is at it again, with another dog-friendly review in London. This time, Charlie hits up the French Bistro classic, Colbert – for a night of escargot, red wine, and of course — doggie treats!

Located just a few metres away from Sloane Square station; Colbert’s handsome wood marquis immediately draws you in. Inside, the restaurant is absolutely buzzing. Filled with stylish Chelsea natives fresh off the office, and a sprinkling of well-dressed families too. Almost every corner of Colbert’s walls is filled with some kind of Art Nouveau print, or French movie poster, and during our Wednesday night visit, almost every table was booked. It becomes obvious that real estate in Colbert is both precious and rare, even on a Wednesday evening. Dining in Colbert feels like stepping back into Paris in the 1920s, beautiful oak panelling, rich burgundy banquettes, andof course a certain kind of ‘je ne sais quoi’ that gives Colbert a distinct kind of charm.

Besides the effortless authenticity of its interiors, one look at the French bistro style many, and the restaurant’s popularity makes total sense. From classics like the truly faultless Escargots à la Bourguignonne, and the Salmon Tartare with Avocado, completely opposites in taste and textures but both equally satisfying,to their large plates like the Côte du Boeuf and Steak Diane, Colbert perfectly executes haute-french cuisine right in the heart of Chelsea. Don’t forget to ask the lovely restaurant manager Rocco, for some wine pairings too – The Chateau Lussac was particularly lovely with Colbert’ s lovely main course options.

But setting the human food aside for one second, Colbert is also a perfectly great place to bring your pooch for a doggie date in SouthWest London. Charlie was immediately greeted by the lovely staff at Colbert and was instantly offered a dog bowl, and one (or five) signature doggie treats. It is worth noting that on a truly busy night, Colbert’s staff made sure to take great care of their furry guest – which I think is definitely worth mentioning.

Finally, don’t leave Colbert without trying out their desserts, the Ice Cream Profiteroles are made in-house are absolutely mouth-watering – so much so that we had two servings! However, if desserts aren’t your fancy, Colbert also has a large selection of French cheeses. Charlie and I can assure you there is no better way to end the evening.

With beautiful snow filled pictures popping up this week in Florence, it’s looking even more incredible this winter. Having lived in Florence for almost 5 years, I admit it I am biased. For me this magical city packed with history is a year round destination, however many only think of it only as an Italian summer fling. Consider these when planning your perfect winter weekend away…

1- No Tourists

https://www.instagram.com/p/BsyLFtEg6ty/

There is no getting away from it, summer in Florence is hectic, the beautiful winding streets become packed with tourists, squeezing through alleyways and forming queues in front of all the best gelaterias. Locals head for the hills (literally) or the sea side, to escape the hustle and bustle of peak season. However during the winter, the city is yours. The Uffizi and Accademia Gallery filled with the grand masters are much more accessible and you can take time to savour the historical surroundings in peace. Wander along the banks of the River Arno or dream about your next jewellery splurge on the famous Ponte Vecchio in a leisurely fashion.

2- Value For Money

https://www.instagram.com/p/BtTPhlcgtu5/

Florence is not a cheap destination, especially in the peak summer months, however during the winter you can get some seriously good off-peak deals. Direct flights into the UK from multiple airport locations can be as little as £60 return into Pisa, which is an quick and easy transfer into Florence. Plus best of all, many of the beautiful luxury hotels along the Arno and in the palazzos around Florence offer low season rates. You can even find special offers on some tours and museums due to the lower demand.

3- Italian Comfort Food

https://www.instagram.com/p/BtLTw7mA_GF/

Cold wintery days made brighter with homemade Italian goodies! Whilst the hot summer days may bring on cravings for ice cold gelato and light caprese salads, Florence is ripe in winter with rich homemade dishes, traditional favourites including Tuscan Ribollita soups, gnocchi and every type of pizza and pasta imaginable. The streets of Florence are filled with unexpected cosy corners to curl up and enjoy a roaring fire or sip on cioccolata calda, a perfect spot to try is Hemmingways chocolaterie, offering a selection of incredible hot chocolates and cakes, perfect fuel for a winter walk.

4- The Shopping

https://www.instagram.com/p/BtD4lB-lqbl/

During the summer being inside seems crazy, however during the winter retreating from the cold is a good excuse to check out the local designers, plus it’s sale season! Florence has the usual high street names but also offers some wonderful local shopping experiences and brands, which can only be found here. From indoor markets and local artisan workshops making mosaics, silverware and linen there is an amazing selection on offer. Another favourite location, which is a shopping destination in it’s own right due to its stunning architecture is Farmacia Santa Maria Novella, it’s the world’s oldest pharmacy and along with luxury products to purchase also offers a beautiful museum with artefacts dating back to the 16th century.

5 – You Can Ski in Tuscany!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BM3JWDlDGJQ/

Florence is ideally located to access the surrounding Tuscan countryside, from vineyards to cooking classes, the same wonderful experiences are available in summer and winter (often cheaper during the winter). Plus it offers a few you may not have even considered! Arezzo in Tuscany, offers antiques fairs throughout the winter months boasting the finest antique pieces, while Tuscany also offers the highest number of hot springs throughout the whole of Italy. So make wellness a priority this winter and sample the thermal waters. Tuscany is also surprisingly, home to some fantastic skiing, with the Pistoia Mountains offering 80 kilometres of powder white slopes, making up 26 runs in total. So base yourself in Florence but keep some time to explore, you will need it!
