Don’t say it too loudly, but it seems like we here in the UK might actually be able to leave not only our homes, but our cities this summer. The sun is shining, the vaccines are incoming, and the restrictions are slowly lifting, and doesn’t it feel wonderful to have some optimism in our lives right now? While jetting off to far-flung destinations around the globe may have to wait a while longer yet, we have all our fingers crossed that we can look forward to getting away here in the UK for some much-needed rest, relaxation and looking at some different scenery.

And while it is very easy to get very excited about the prospect of going somewhere that is further than one hour’s walking distance from our front door, it is important to remember that, as with all things in this pandemic reality, a little caution and a lot of preparation are vital when it comes to making sure that you stay safe, stay healthy, and steer clear of too much damage should things fall through. With that in mind, here are a few things that anyone who is planning a summer holiday needs to have before they relax.

Make Sure That You Have A Reusable Water Bottle

It goes without saying that we all hope that we can look forward to a little indoor restaurant and pub time this summer, but what about the journey there? We should all be looking for ways to minimise our use of non-reusable containers at any rate, but it is doubly important at a time when we need to try and keep ourselves infection free. So, make sure that you have a reusable water bottle or container with you to avoid having to look for a corner shop or drinks trolley.

Don’t Forget The Masks And Hand Sanitiser

At this point, we are sure that these two items are up there with “keys”, “phone” and “wallet/purse” when it comes to the pre-leaving the house pocket pat-down, but if you are making any plans to get away this summer, it is going to be so important that you make sure that you can stay safe and stay sanitised. It still remains to be seen what the restrictions will be by the time the summer rolls around, but it will almost certainly be a good idea to make sure that you mask up before you go anywhere and making sure that you are constantly cleaning your hands is going to be vital for some time to come yet.

Don’t Leave Home Without Enough Power

Now, getting back to those evergreen travel packing essentials: this wouldn’t be a list of “don’t forget to pack…” items without mentioning a phone charger, would it? You probably won’t be needing to look into an adapter to hook up your devices to international power sockets just yet, but do make sure that you have a charger, and a portable charger, with you at all times. You never know when you’ll need your phone urgently, and you can guarantee that it will be the moment when it starts running out of juice.

Make Sure That You Have Got All Your Vape Gear With You

Anyone who vapes will tell you that there is nothing worse than reaching for your e-cigarette and realising that you have run out of sub ohm liquid. Just like your phone’s battery percentage, it’s the kind of thing that will always be running low just when you need it the most, so make sure that you have stocked up properly before you get going, and that includes making sure that you have plenty of batteries and replacement coils too. And since you’re going on holiday, why not treat your tastebuds to a new liquid flavour? Aquavape has all kinds of different UK made e-liquid to satisfy all palates, and they offer same-day dispatch on orders made before 1pm if you’re one of those last-minute packers.

Prepare For The British Summer Weather

As much as we are all dreaming of lying out there on the beach soaking up the sunshine or going for beautiful walks in the countryside without a care in the world, no one can afford to underestimate the unpredictable beast that is the Great British Summer weather. If you plan for sunshine, you’ll get a week of rain. If you’re expecting the outlook to be cold and wet, you are going to be blasted with the hottest temperatures on record. As we saw in March, there’s just no predicting it!

So, the only thing you can do is prepare for every eventuality and to expect the unexpected. Look for lightweight waterproof options, take at least two different kinds of walking shoes just in case, and remember that whenever you go on holiday in Great Britain you should always bring a jumper.

If you love the idea of being in the great outdoors, going off the grid and reconnecting with nature then you must pay a visit to Round the Woods this summer.

Situated on a private 18-acre nature reserve in Norfolk, this luxurious glamping destination is for anyone who likes the idea of camping but does not want to compromise on home comforts. Opening on 12th April, Round the Woods invited House of Coco for an exclusive sneak preview of their new addition to the site, the stunning Willow Roundhouse.

Inspired by an interest in the environment, outdoor living and self-sufficiency, Kate Symonds and Seb Burns quit their London jobs and set up Round the Woods glamping site near Norwich as a way of combining their passion with spending more time with their sons and enjoying the land. The couple along with their family built the Willow Roundhouse over two years, using natural, sustainable and local materials resulting in an impressive, deluxe glamping retreat.

Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by Kate and Seb who set about loading our cases on to the trolley and show us around the site. This location is truly special with vast open woodland. It includes communal spaces, a pizza oven, an outdoor fire pit, a pond, shower facilities and an open meadow ideal for exploring. I can tell this is the break I need, an opportunity to pause and reset.

Set in the far corner of the meadow is the Willow Roundhouse, flanked by daffodils and bluebells. An outdoor deck wraps around the house, a picnic bench, BBQ, outdoor chairs and a huge hammock make it the perfect spot for alfresco dining and relaxation.

Opening the door to my home for two nights, I am surprised and impressed by the gorgeous interior design. The Willow Roundhouse successfully brings nature indoors, with the use of natural materials and lots of windows to create a light and airy space. As you walk in you are immediately struck by the wooden floor that features a spectacular tree design created from log disks made from the site. The roundwood frame wraps the interior like woodland branches, all crafted from larch and sweet chestnut. The twisting branches wind up to a round ceiling surrounding a fabulous circular skylight. A sumptuous King size bed with cotton linen and goose down bedding is directly underneath guaranteeing guests a night under the stars. Kate and Seb have paid attention to all the design details, every nook and cranny is full of delightful handpicked special touches from the snug throws to the twinkly fairy lights that climb around the wooden interior frame.

There is plenty of space to take it easy. Curl up with a book on the hanging chair nestled close to the wood burner or kickback on one of the comfy designer seats that convert into beds. It’s spacious and romantic for two, but equally large enough for up to seven people. The soft curves and warm tones of the clay walls coupled with large windows, create a calming, open-plan space. There is a well-equipped handmade kitchen with an oven, hob and grill as well as a bench seat and dining table that looks out across the meadow.

We were lucky to have glorious weather so spent most of the trip on the deck playing swing ball and chilling in hammock. Round the Woods is the perfect place to disconnect. Whether you want to kick back and rest or have adventurous kids who like to explore, there is something for everyone. During our stay we discovered the den hidden in the woods, toasted marshmallows in the outdoor fire pit and spotted lots of local wildlife. After two peaceful days, tech-free, I felt recharged and rejuvenated.

A two-night break in the Willow Roundhouse from £380. For more information visit www.roundthewoods.co.uk

It’s no secret that travelling can clear your mind and boost your spirit — so it’s no wonder that in the first quarter of 2020, UK residents made 13.9 million visits abroad. However, it can be tricky to find the perfect city break for you, which is why we’ve picked our four favourites for inspiration.

Whether you’re a beach bunny, or you love the slopes, you’ll find the right city to visit in our fun guide. We’ve even got top tips for applying to move there if you’re looking for a permanent change of scenery. Just read on for everything you need to know.

1. Singapore

With fantastic culture and spectacular technology, Singapore is the perfect destination for those who want a stimulating trip. This city really does have something for everyone — spend a day relaxing on the pristine beaches, sample Michelin Star cuisine in one of the many excellent restaurants, or take a trip to the high-class Orchard Road shopping centre.

If you’re looking to move permanently, this could be the right city for you. With over 2.16 immigrants, there is a thriving multicultural population. If you want more information on permanently moving to Singapore, check out this page that helps you fill out an application for a PR here in Singapore.

2. Moscow

This gorgeous city is steeped in culture, perfect if you want an unforgettable trip. You can explore one of the many ornate Russian Orthodox churches, check out the iconic St Basil’s Cathedral, or even take a sleeper train to St Petersburg and watch the Russian countryside fly by.

The Russian capital is also filled with history — as well as several grand museums and the Kremlin, there is also an opportunity to experience history up close and personal by visiting Lenin’s Mausoleum where the controversial leader is preserved for visitors to see. For lovers of architecture and culture, this is the perfect city for you.

3. Canberra

If your trip to Australia just involves Sydney, you’re seriously missing out. One of the most interesting things about the Australian capital city is that it was entirely planned, rather than developing organically like most major metropolitan hubs.

This destination is perfect if you want to combine relaxation and education. Visit the National Library of Australia, the Museum of Australian Democracy, or the Australian National Gallery to get your culture fix, before relaxing under azure skies by one of the many open-air swimming pools or parks. It’s no wonder than Canberra remains such a hidden gem.

4. Dar es Salaam

This Tanzanian coastal area is a gorgeous city, perfect for travelers who want their dose of sun and sea without visiting the same old areas over and over again. It’s particularly known for clear sandy beaches, great for snorkeling or sunbathing. It also has an excellent seafood trade, perfect if you have any foodies in your group.

The city is also full of exciting things for tourists to do. One of the best ways to break up your stay is to take a safari into central Tanzania and look out for the huge range of animals native to the country — including hippos, elephants, rhino, and lion.

Enjoy Your Trip

Now that you know about these four underrated cities you’re ready for an unforgettable trip. Whether you want to immerse yourself in culture, explore history, try out a range of high adrenaline activities, or just have an enjoyable time sunbathing on unspoiled beaches, these four cities provide the perfect opportunity for you.

History loving, holiday planning Brits looking ahead to a Florida getaway later this year are in for a special treat in Key West – a tour by Presidential limousine!

Visitors to Key West’s Harry S. Truman Little White House, Florida’s only presidential museum, can now travel around the island city in the limo formerly used by President Truman during his term in office (1945-53). Over the course of 11 trips, Truman spent nearly six months of his Presidency in Key West.

Acquired by the non-profit Key West Harry S. Truman Foundation, the vintage Lincoln Cosmopolitan stretch limo has 32,000 original miles on its odometer. Features include an intercom system, hydraulic privacy shield, security elements and an airflow controller for the president’s comfort.

“This limo is one of nine that were situated at different cities throughout the United States for use by the president when he would travel to different locations, because back in that period, of course, the presidential limousine did not travel on the presidential plane,” said Clinton Curry, director of operations for the Little White House.

Meticulously restored to its Truman-era appearance, the Little White House showcases authentic artifacts including the former president’s handmade poker table, a tropical shirt he wore in Key West and the desk where he carried out his official duties.

“President Truman made 11 presidential visits to Key West totalling 175 days of his presidency, essentially running the United States right here from the Key West Little White House,” said Curry.

In addition to regular tours of the white-painted structure, the museum recently debuted a small-group VIP White Glove Tour whose participants can view galleries of priceless Truman objects not on public display, and don white gloves to hold presidential belongings including his prized whiskey jigger. The experience culminates with a ride in the limo that carried America’s 33rd president.

The tour includes the limo ride to the Truman Waterfront and runs for 2.5 hours and is priced from $537.50 based on up to six people sharing the experience.

Monte Carlo is one of the four quartiers of Monaco, and situated along the French Riviera. It is world-renowned for having the highest number of millionaires per capita and as a result of the huge cash injection this affords the city-state, it has everything to offer from luxury food to luxury shopping. After Vatican City, it is the second-smallest sovereign state in the world and it is bordered by France to the north, east and west, it is lapped by the Mediterranean Sea to the south, making it as picturesque as it is wealthy.

It’s a must-visit city, but if you can’t visit Monte Carlo right now then the good news is that you can recreate many of Monte Carlo’s most famous experiences online. Here’s how:

A Night at the Monte Carlo Casino

The Monte Carlo casino is an imposing building steeped in history and myth: it a place of legendary tales, of high rollers and of elegance. It is one of five casinos based in Monte Carlo, and it is by far the most famous, and the most architecturally imposing.

Luckily, it’s easy to replicate a night at the Monte Carlo casino online. Pick your poison from a wide range of white hat gaming sites and casinos and perhaps even look for a casino that offers table games with live dealers, or augmented reality options to make your casino gaming experience as realistic as possible. Unleash your inner James Bond by whipping up a martini (shaken, not stirred) and you’ve got all of the luxury of a night at the Monte Carlo casino, but from the comfort of your own sofa.

Indulge in Some Luxury Shopping

Monaco is renowned for its luxury fashion and shopping experiences, and the huge number of designer brands that call the region home. If you’re in Monte Carlo then on the border of the Casino Square you’ll find the famous shopping district of Carré d’Or: this is where all the elegant luxury boutiques are found. But if you’re not in Monte Carlo that doesn’t mean that you can’t visit all of the same stores, and indulge in a little designer retail therapy online. French luxury brand Chanel offer an online boutique whilst fashion house Dior also have an online retail offering that includes complimentary shipping.

To replicate that luxury boutique experience, why not sink into your most comfortable share and play some classical music with the volume low as you scroll for the sites hunting for your latest must-have piece.

Compete in the Monte Carlo Grand Prix

The Monaco Grand Prix is the biggest event on the principalities calendar. The race usually takes place in May, but thanks to the magic of the internet, you can experience it at any time of the year. If you want to be involved in the excitement of the race in real-time, you could join a fantasy Formula One team and compete in an online league. There is also a whole genre of online gaming that allows you to race around the streets of the world’s biggest cities, including Monaco.

As Monaco is the only Formula One race that is actually a road race, taking place on the streets of Monte Carlo, you could even take a virtual walk around the whole route (thanks to the magic of Google maps) to fully immerse yourself in the Monaco experience. Whilst you might not be able to travel to Monte Carlo right now, with these clever tricks, you’ll feel like you’re actually there in no time.

  1. Spiti Valley

Kee Monastery, Spiti, Himachal Pradesh (image source: Wikimedia Commons)

Spiti is so much more than just a secluded cold desert situated at a height of around 3,800 meters. It is more of a spiritual destination for backpacker travelers and motorcyclists. The raw and rugged beauty of the Spiti valley is something indescribable.

Among the Himachal packages that the travel agents offer to the tourists, Spiti valley is clearly among the top 5 destinations. Spiti valley has many attractions that are suited for all types of tourists with different preferences. These attractions include Buddhist monasteries, mountain biking, trekking, and whitewater rafting.

During the cold of January, the destinations such as Tabo, Nako, Kibber village, Kaza, and Dhankar look different compared to the summer season. In recent years, Spiti has been attracting an increasing number of tourists from all over the world. Spiti valley stands in stark contrast compared to the concrete jungle of the modern cities of India.

Tourists traveling from the cities find Spiti valley to be a land of some other world. During the winter, Spiti valley is famous for its snow rains. You can find Tibetan Buddhist houses that look very similar to the houses in Tibet. Did you know that Spiti is also known as Little Tibet?

You can find plenty of homestay options for your accommodation and during the winter season. One thing to note is that the only way to reach Spiti Valle in the winter is by traveling by road. This route starts from Shimla through the National Highway No.22 through Kinnaur.

One gem of an attraction is the Chandratal Lake in January. The beauty of this lake is indescribable during the winter mornings. The other lake is the Suraj Tal lake which is perfect for your Instagram.

  1. Manali

Manali in Winter, Himachal Pradesh (image source: Wikimedia Commons)

Arguably the valleys of Manali are some of the best places to visit in Himachal in January. The destination of Kullu is equally more important for the Indian tourists because of the Hindu temples that are significant during certain months of the year.

Manali is always mentioned in the list of the most popular Himachal honeymoon packages. Among the newly-married couples from North India, Manali is the perfect destination for their vacation.

The charm of Manali is a story on its own during the winter season. Especially in January, witnessing snowfall at the Rohtang Pass is a wonderful experience. In winter, there are winter sports such as snowmobile riding and skiing are very popular among people.

Manali is situated at a height of around 6000 feet, the temperatures can easily drop below 0 degrees Celcius and it is recommended to be prepared well before you travel. The sight-seeing of Manali mostly includes visits to the popular temple such as Hadimba Devi Temple etc.

Trekking during the winters is not for everyone however, it is one of the most sought-after experiences for regular trekkers and backpackers. You can find Paragliding and rafting as well to satiate your thirst for adventure. Manali is a great destination for picturesque views of the mountains surrounded by deodar forests. For the photographers, January is a wonderful time to be in Manali.

  1. Shimla

The Ridge, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh (image source: Wikimedia Commons)

Shimla is lovingly called the ‘Queen of Hills’ because it is majestic because of its location as well as due to the colonial-era architecture. This beautiful hill station is also among the top Himachal honeymoon packages. It is a favorite holiday destination for Indian domestic tourists.

The major attractions of Shimla include The Mall, Gaiety Theatre, and Viceregal Lodge to name a few. Shimla is perfect for trekking and winter sports activities during the winter season. After the snowfall, Shimla transforms into a magical fantasy land from the storybooks. The look of the buildings along with the long stretch of the snow-covered road with people walking has a very charming appeal to Shimla.

The scenic views during the winter is an amazing sight to behold. Shimla is situated at a height of around 2200 meters and provides a panoramic view of the Himalayan range. Shimla was used as a Summer vacation destination by the British Officers during their rule in India. That is the reason the city is embedded in colonial history.

If you wish to see Himachal in January, your most convenient option can be Shimla. This city is conveniently connected by road, train, and air. Also, for budget travelers, Shimla is an ideal vacation destination. For witnessing the snowfall, the most famous spot near Shimla is Kufri which always attracts tourists from North India.

  1. Kasol

Town of Kasol, Himachal Pradesh (image source: Wikimedia Commons)

Among many other places ideal to visit in Himachalin January, Kasol is lesser-known to the domestic Indian tourists. However, it has gained significant popularity among International travelers. It is also somehow known as the ‘Israel of India’.

Kasol is pretty much a laid-back town where people come to relax and also because of the hippie culture that is prevalent among the international tourists. Kasol has some of the most amazing scenic views in Himachal Pradesh. Among the trekker’s community, Kasol has many interesting treks through lush green valleys.

Another popular feature of Kasol is the presence of ‘Hot Springs’ where you can take a dip even during the cold winter months. The hot water in these springs at some places is also used to cook food. The Manikaran Temple is a Sikh temple where the communal food is cooked by submerging the cooking pot in hot boiling water of the spring.

Kasol is one of the best places to visit in Himachal in January because the lush green valleys change dramatically into snow-laden treks leading to Malana and the famous Parvati valley. If your stay in Kasol extends to February, then there is a famous dance called Harlala which is ‘Masked Dance’ by the locals.

As for the adventure enthusiasts, camping, trekking options are available to satisfy you. Trekking to Rasol Pass and Chanderkhani Pass are among the most popular trekking routes along with many beautiful camping sites. Although trekking through these routes is quite challenging during winters, many travelers do these treks in extreme conditions as well.

If you wish to travel to Kasol during winters, you can find much less of a crowd. If you find it challenging to travel to Kasol during winters, then it is better to get assistance from the tour operators or a travel agency. These travel agents offer many Himachal packages which are meant for traveling to Kasol in the winter season.

Buzzing with youthful energy, Dharamshala is located in the lap of the beautiful Kangra Valley. It is surrounded by the majestic Dhauladhar mountain range. Dharamshala has gained a lot of popularity among foreign tourists because of the presence of The Dalai Lama, who is the spiritual leader of the exiled leader of Tibet in India.

The local places to visit in and around Dharamshala are the following:

  • Mcleodganj
  • Dharamkot
  • Sidhbari
  • Naddi

During the winter months of December and January, the tourists visiting Dharamshala are very low. The snow-covered mountains of the Dhauladhars look magical during the winters.

To witness the snowfall, tourists from north India visit Dharamshala. Especially the Naddi Lake is the site to truly enjoy the view of the snowfall with the background of the forest.

Dharamshala is one of the best places to visitin the Himachal in January because of the various tourist activities and attractions. Trekking to Triund top is one of the best adventure trips you can have. Shopping in the famous town of Mcleodganj and enjoying Tibetan, Indian and Intercontinental cuisines can make your day worthwhile.

Camping, Trekking, and Sightseeing are some of the top experiences to have while in Dharamshala. It is quite interesting to find people from the major cities who have settled in the Dharamshala after quitting their stressful lives in cities like Delhi and Chandigarh.

Conclusion

If you are planning to travel to any of the above-mentioned destinations, it is recommended that you check the weather and road conditions before starting. The temperatures sometimes can fall below the freezing point at night. Also, many adventure sports can become risky if proper preparation is not done. Trekking to certain places is possible but can become a little difficult for beginners.

Other than that, January can bring a new personality to the natural beauty of Himachal Pradesh. Do not miss the opportunity to enjoy witnessing the snowfall at the key destinations. The experiences of the mountains during the Winter season can become beautiful stories to remember.

This past week has been a rollercoaster for women all over the world but hearing about positive initiatives is always a great reminder that there is always good to be found in this world. Our friends at Sandals Resorts are calling for guests to bring sanitary towels, tampons, and hand sanitiser with them on holiday to help vulnerable women in the Caribbean.

Guests visiting the brand’s resorts in Jamaica, Barbados and The Bahamas, when international travel resumes, are urged to bring a small number of products with them in their luggage which can be donated to local women’s centres via the Pack for a Purpose initiative.

Heidi Clarke, Director of the Sandals Foundation, the Company’s non-profit organisation, says: “Period poverty is a problem all over the world and now, more than ever, disadvantaged women in the Caribbean are finding it difficult to access the products they need. By bringing one or two packs of sanitary towels or tampons with them and signing up to the Pack for a Purpose programme, Sandals guests can do their bit to help women who are living difficult lives. What’s more, they weigh next to nothing, so guests don’t need to worry about exceeding their luggage weight allowance.”

The Sandals Foundation distributes products donated by guests chosen from the Pack for a Purpose site to local women’s centres and programmes in the Caribbean, giving them much needed support.

Projects that benefit from the programme include:

Jamaica:

  • The Women’s Centre of Jamaica provides a second chance at education for adolescent mothers. With seven main centres and 11 outreach stations across the island, the facilities serve 200 young mothers through continued educational instruction, group and individual counselling, mentorship programmes and vocational training. Holidaymakers can help young mothers secure a better future by bringing feminine products that are a necessity but can sometimes be inaccessible due to no or low-income.

The Bahamas:

  • The PACE Foundation in Nassau, The Bahamas provides access to continued education programs for 25 teen mothers. In addition to helping with coping mechanisms, the Centre prepares its student mothers academically and socially for re-entry into secondary school, a technical and vocational centre or the job market. Guests can help prevent absenteeism that can interrupt their developmental progress by donating feminine care products, which are sometimes expensive and out of their reach.

Barbados:

  • In Barbados, Jabez House, a non-profit partner of The Sandals Foundation serves as a haven of hope and empowerment for female sex workers, facilitating their transition from the sex industry through educational and vocational training. As the women of Jabez House carefully map the road to their new lives, lowered earning power can prevent them from adequately meeting their basic needs. Guests’ donations of feminine products on their next trip can help eliminate one more barrier.

To take part in the programme, travellers just need to visit the Pack for a Purpose website, select the resort that they’re visiting from the ‘destinations’ list and pack the chosen items they wish to donate before they travel. Items are then delivered to the hotel’s front desk on arrival.
