Nestled between Florence and Rome amidst the Tuscan hills, the world heritage-listed Val d’Orcia region provides a picture-perfect backdrop to the five-star Fonteverde Spa Tuscany – an elegantly restored 17th-century Tuscan villa turned wellness destination. There’s nothing we love more than an Italian getaway here at House of Coco, and an elegant spa retreat has our name all over it! Once home to the Medici family, the property has been transformed into a stylish gem in the countryside, without losing any of its rustic Renaissance charm.

Abundant with cypress trees, olive groves and vineyards, the Tuscan landscape is notoriously beguiling, and the panoramic views of Fonteverde are made ever sweeter from the 460ft outdoor infinity pool carved into the hill. What could be better? The villa itself is largely secluded, allowing guests an immersive sense of silence and complete calm.

Where Renaissance Luxury Meets Modern Wellness

With expansive ceilings, marble floors and opulent furnishings, Fonteverde oozes an understated luxury. Renaissance styling and architecture provide a true traditional Italian feel, with its arched windows and frescoed ceilings providing a sense of royal grandeur which blends seamlessly with the more modern additions to the hotel’s design. Rooms are lavishly decorated while tastes remain simple; with floor-length drapes, cream walls and spacious en suites, guests are encouraged to recline into a space of total comfort. The front-facing suites overlook the Val d’Orcia, where sun seekers can enjoy spectacular morning views over a champagne breakfast from their private terrace.

Ancient hot springs have frequented the area around San Casciano dei Bagni for centuries and Fonteverde’s plethora of wellness offerings has made it an epi-centre for thermal tradition in the region. The hotel’s labyrinth of pools bubbles with healing water sourced from local springs, and guests can soak and swim in its mineral-rich lagoons.

A Haven of Wellness and Luxury Dining

The 5000sq metre spa offers over 100 treatments to choose from, offering first-class programmes of treatment specifically designed to aid ailments and skin types. The antioxidant properties of the waters themselves have been known to provide numerous benefits to the musculoskeletal system, nervous system and respiratory system, and work on a broader level to enhance overall well-being. Comprising seven pools, treatment rooms, steam rooms, an ice plunge pool and a Turkish hammam, the spa provides hours of entertainment for those wishing to sink into a blissful state of end-to-end pampering.

Such is the Italian way, the hotel’s Ferdinando restaurant takes inspiration from the surrounding landscape. Seasonal ingredients and local produce inspire the classic Italian menu, and dishes range from light and healthy to exquisitely indulgent. Homemade pasta is laced with truffle shavings foraged by the hotel’s resident truffle hunter, while succulent duck and steak is paired with local organic red wine. On summer evenings guests can dine on the terrace and watch the sun set over hilltop villages, against rolling hills and amber skies.

Taking oodles of pasta and wine into serious consideration (perhaps the most important elements in any Italian getaway, wellness or otherwise!), a stay at Fonteverde is as healthy or as indulgent as you make it, but one thing is for certain. It’s impossible to leave this Tuscan oasis without feeling utterly, perhaps irrevocably, relaxed.

Nightly rates at Fonteverde start from €198 (£152*) per person per night in a Queen room on weekdays on a B&B basis. Rates also include wi-fi, access to spa and fitness facilities. For further information or to book please email travel@fonteverdespa.com or call +39 0578 572333.

I’ve recently instigated ‘Sunday Funday’ with one of my friends, an initiative to get us out of the house, make the most of our weekends and discover new pockets of London we haven’t yet experienced which last month delivered us to Marylebone Village.

Despite its W1 postcode and proximity to Oxford Street (and ergo my 9-5…) Marylebone still manages to feel like an area of London relatively new to me, that’s managed to keep its village charm and ambiance. Of course there are chains – two Pret’s practically within an arm-span on the high street – but alongside them nestle a healthy dose of independent shops, food suppliers and restaurants, not to mention a spectacular Sunday Farmer’s Market with a host of utterly delectable produce.

Here are our tips for the best foodie discoveries, make sure to head down on a Sunday to make the most of them…

Good Life Eatery

Situated towards the southern end of Marylebone Lane, the Good Life Eatery strives to encourage us all to eat better, healthier and happier. Founded three years ago by co-founders Yasmine Larizadeh and Shirin Kourus, they wanted to bring something new, fresh and healthy to London’s food scene. Its menu includes cold-pressed juices and smoothies as well as ‘all-day yumz’ from a ‘Shred Breakfast’ of poached eggs, sweetcorn, hummous, shredded greens and omega seeds to the more indulgent and yet still deliciously healthy Chestnut & Almond Waffle, served with rhubarb and chia compote, coconut yoghurt and banana mash.Grab yourself one of their powerful shots to kick your metabolism into gear – we loved the First Aid Shot of Lemon, Echinacea, Turmeric and Baobab.

Aubaine

If you like your breakfasts a little more indulgent (read: French), London favourite Aubaine has an outpost on Moxon Street. Typically decorated in its signature palette of tonal greys, it’s a big branch offering their classic menu of treats like Lobster Benedict, Black Truffle Scrambled Eggs and the Full French breakfast of Toulouse sausage, eggs, portobello mushroom, Alsace bacon, baked beans, sweetcorn fritter, kale and slow-roasted tomatoes. Where they really come into their own however is the pastries (quelle surprise…). We popped in mid-morning to warm up after our chilly mooch with a steaming pot of tea and one of their Pain aux Pistaches, a twice-baked pain au chocolate with pistachio and almond. And yes, it was every bit as delicious as it sounds…

The Ginger Pig

Carnivores may already be familiar with London butcher The Ginger Pig; with eight shops across the capital, the Marylebone Village outpost is one of only two that offer their signature butchery classes, alongside the Borough Market space.Have a look at forthcoming dates on their website; there’s an Easter lamb shoulder nose-to-tail class coming up, or try the Game class. Seasonal variable, the class currently covers fur game or venison and rabbit until September, whilst the featured game class covers grouse, partridge and pheasant from October to January.

Beef is dry-aged in house for a minimum of 28 days. Sausages and burgers are made by hand by their skilled butchery team, while bacon and gammons are cured either by hand-salting or using a traditional brine; in short, it’s a meat-lover’s dream. Make sure to sample one of their signature sausage rolls – their bestseller – with crispy, flaky pastry and deliciously juicy sausagemeat, before picking up dinner.

La Fromagerie

Those with a sensitive nose may wish to avoid this emporium of cheese. Turophiles take note; this may be your Holy Grail. La Fromagerie Marylebone is one of three sites in central London, each of which houses a signature temperature and humidity-controlled cheese room featuring dozens of favourite and little-known varieties, along with a tasting café complete with a carefully-sourced wine selection, selected by region to complement the cheeses and tasing menus.

With a pantry of delicious treats made in-house, you’ll want to stock up on their seasonal chutneys, pickles, preserves and jams, not to mention the homemade granola, hummus, cultured butter and buttermilk and seasonal fresh produce delivered each week from delivered each week from markets in Italy, France and farms around the UK. Stick around for lunch and you’ll be rewarded by cheesy favourites like fondue, raclette and one of the best grilled cheese sarnies you’ll every try.

La Brasseria

One gets the impression from La Brasseria that it’s something of a local favourite. We headed there for lunch and it had the comfortable hum of conversation from tables dotted with families of several generations, couples out for a lazy lunch, groups of girlfriends catching up; it’s the very epitome of a cosy brasserie.

The decor is gorgeous; teal walls, wood panelling and brass fixtures, it nails the chic Italian design. We tucked in to a creamy burrata with sliced tomatoes and prosciutto, followed by a perfect carbonara packed with pancetta and one of their signature crispy pizzas. The weekend brunch is also a total treat, with dishes like French toast with maple bacon, banana and pecan nuts and the Italian American with fried eggs, prosciutto and road potato.

Marylebone Farmer’s Market

I’m saving the best for last, but Marylebone Farmer’s Market has enough to it that it could warrant a visit to the area just by itself. On every Sunday, the market is a showcase of some of the finest and freshest food producers from around the UK. Ironically, the very first stall we came across was fresh fruit, veg and apple juice from Perry Court Farm in Kent; five minutes from my parents’ house it’s a place I’ve frequented many a time.

We passed freshly baked breads from the likes of Karaway and Clapham’s Old Post Office Bakery, pies, cakes and pastries courtesy of Honeypie Bakery, fantastic fungi from The Mushroom Table and the most incredible sausages from The Parsons Nose, who served up freshly cooked bangers dripping with onions for a hearty breakfast bap. Windrush Valley Goat Dairy is a must-visit, for not just their cheeses but delicious goat’s curd and milk, and make sure to stop off at Anatolia, a Turkish couple making gozleme and tantuni on site using their mother’s recipes.

If you’re heading to the market for your food shop make it an early one; we popped back at 12 en route home to find several stalls sold out, all the fresh fish gone and not a bunch of flowers to be seen where there were dozens an hour before. What a wonderful sight to see so much local support for small producers, buying fresh and seasonal over the plastic-drowned produce in our supermarkets.

Throughout his illustrious career, René Lalique had always been a pioneer. During his time, his creative flair and his crystal know-how was second to none, earning him the title of ‘inventor of modern jewellery’ . A constant innovator, René Lalique carved out a special place for himself as one of the greatest names in the world of French Decorative Arts. Today, the name Lalique has become synonymous with the French art of living and evokes the brilliance and wonder of both jewellery and crystal.

130 years have passed since René Lalique opened his first boutique on Rue du Quatre-Septembre; and it is exceedingly clear that his modern day counterpart, Silvio Denz, shares in his pioneering spirit. Since acquiring Lalique in 2008, Silvio Denz has extended the world of Lalique into previously uncharted territories. In the last ten years, he has opened more than 30 flagship stores and boutiques, launched Lalique Art and Lalique Maison, opened the Lalique Museum in Wingen-sur-Moder, opened the Villa René Lalique, the Château Hochberg, and most recently, the Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey in the Sauternes region of France.

In conversation with Silvio Denz, we discuss his passion for creative excellence, and how this passion seeps through every one of his endeavours. We talk about his admiration for the creative genius of René Lalique, and the special legacy he has left behind. A legacy, that in the hands of Silvio Denz, will live on for generations to come.

In 2008, Art & Fragrance acquired the famed Lalique, which has become synonymous with creative excellence and the French art of Living. In what ways do you think Lalique has changed since then?
René Lalique was an innovator and worked in many areas during his career; gaining recognition as one of the leading designers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His work spanned jewellery, perfume bottles, tableware, decorative, and architectural objects. As we celebrate his 130 year legacy, we are really coming back to the true sense of the brand and building a bridge between past and future. Today, Lalique is a diversified brand that epitomises luxury lifestyle in all its forms: from decorative objects, glasses, decanters, jewellery, art, fragrances, interior design, hospitality, and gastronomy.

Lalique’s crystal know-how has been ongoing for the past 130 years and is unlike anything else in the world. How are you marrying Lalique’s heritage with the modern innovations of the future? How are you keeping this heritage alive?
René Lalique’s creative genius is at the centre of our inspiration. With admiration and respect for his artistry, we continue to innovate in all areas of our business. Since the acquisition of Lalique in 2008, well over 20 million euros has been invested in overhauling the factory and optimising processes. We keep our heritage alive by creating new collections as well as reinventing classic models (such as the legendary Bacchantes vase which was designed by René Lalique in 1927) in new colours and finishes.

Over the past ten years, we have opened more than 30 new flagship stores, boutiques, and showrooms worldwide. We also work with partners like Singapore International Airlines – which was just voted the best airline in the world for the 5th time in a row. We also work with different luxury brands, artists, and designers, who share the same values and standards of quality as we do, by using age old techniques and designs in new ways. All of these efforts keep our heritage alive.

2011 was a momentous year for Lalique. After the acquisition you launched the Lalique Museum in Wingen-sur-Moder and Lalique Art. What inspired you to expand the world of Lalique and what has the reception been like?
I acquired Lalique on Valentine’s Day, 2008. Prior to that, I was a passionate collector of Lalique and admired René Lalique, who in my opinion, was one of the greatest creative forces in the world of French decorative art. In July 2011, we opened Lalique Museum in Wingen-sur-Moder, Alsace; which is the site of Lalique’s only production facility even up to this day.

The Lalique Museum is owned by the French State; and I am proud to say that we worked closely with them to open the museum and enhance the collections. An exceptional architecturally designed building, the museum houses more than 650 objects created by Rene Lalique. It is a testament to his lasting legacy, that it now attracts around 70,000 visitors per year.

Lalique Art places the expertise of Lalique at the disposal of major contemporary artists, designers, and cultural foundations. In recent years, Lalique Art has created outstanding crystal artworks based on sculptures by Yves Klein and Rembrandt Bugatti, crystal architecture collections with Zaha Hadid and Mario Botta, as well as contemporary artists like Damien Hirst and Anish Kapoor.

This June you opened the new Lalique hotel and restaurant – Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey. Could you tell us more about the new hotel?
The Hotel Lalique at Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey is a sumptuous hotel and gourmet restaurant in the Sauternes region. This region has the greatest concentration of first-growth terroirs, particularly Premiers Grands Crus Classés. It opened its doors on the 400th anniversary of the estate and is a place where four worlds converge: wine, crystal, gastronomy and hospitality — all combining to serve the senses. Rising to the gastronomic challenge is our brilliant Head Chef Jérôme Schilling, who began his career working with all the great names of French cuisine. The Château’s four cellars are home to a collection of red and white wines and a heritage of 350,000 bottles, that include rare nectars alongside humbler vintages.

Offering three suites and ten rooms, the new Hotel Lalique ensures the highest standards of hospitality and gastronomy. I am delighted to share our unique heritage and evoke the emotions created by a Premier Cru Classé. The Château is Lalique’s third establishment, after Villa René Lalique in 2015 (a member of the Relais & Châteaux collection and five-star hotel) and Château Hochberg by Lalique in 2016, both located in Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace.

Lady Tina Green and Pietro Mingarelli have been Lalique’s design partners for several different Lalique projects. How did this partnership come about?
Like all our partnerships, this was born out of a shared passion and standards of excellence and quality. In 2011, Green & Mingarelli created Lalique Maison, an interior decoration and furniture collection that was inspired by René Lalique’s passion for the Art Deco style. Back then, Art Deco was used to adorn ocean liners, glamorous trains like the Orient Express, as well as buildings and private homes — just as Green & Mingarelli do today with Lalique Maison.

Lalique Art started with a prominent collaboration with the Yves Klein Archives. How do you go about finding the right artists and foundations to partner with?
We partner with prestigious luxury brands and designers who share the same values and standards of quality as us, in order to create unusual objects which draw on this common savoir-faire and expertise. Collaborations with artists such as Damien Hirst are audacious endeavours, which René Lalique himself, who was both a visionary and trend setter, would no doubt have approved.

This year marks a significant milestone in the story of Lalique with the maison celebrating 130 years. Are there any special events and projects we should look forward to?
Aside from our new Lalique Hotel and gourmet restaurant at Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey in Bordeaux, the entirety of Lalique Art’s collaborations will be presented at the temporary exhibition at the Lalique Museum in Alsace until November 4, 2018. We have opened a new flagship store in Ginza, Tokyo and created new limited edition collection for 2018 to celebrate the 130th anniversary. In September this year, we will also be opening a new boutique in Bordeaux.

Hamamingo

From their towels down to their tote bag packaging, Hamamingo’s eco-friendly products are created with a focus on quality and slow production, to give consumers a piece that they will be able to use for years. Their producers share the same commitment to the garment lifespan, and through their production processes, the company is able to support local communities in Denizli, Turkey where they champion fair wages and respect the skills of the women who hand-tie the tassels in these communities.

If the classic turkey and trimmings just doesn’t float your boat, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite festive dishes across London that take a twist to the traditional.

Market Halls’ Take on Christmas Classics

As if one Market Hall wasn’t enough, both Fulham and Victoria have some pretty serious contenders for best Christmas dish this year. In Victoria, Flank’s sumptuous sounding ‘Pigs in Blankets’ burger is stuffed with pork and bacon, with a good dose of chilli jam and red cabbage slaw. Monty’s Deli meanwhile have created the Chanukah sandwich , based around their latke and served with smoked turkey and liver paté. South of the river in Fulham meanwhile, BBQ specialists Hotbox have pimped up their infamous Mac and cheese bites with soft, sautéed Brussels sprouts.

Bayou Bar’s Turkey Po Boy

There are only so many Pret Christmas sandwiches one can take, so if you’ve just about had your fill head down to Tooting’s New Orleans-inspired Bayou Bar. No stranger to a tasty Po Boy – a traditional Louisiana sandwich for those rookies – this Christmas they’ve created the ultimate sandwich. The Christmas Po Boy (£8.50) team succulent turkey schnitzel with a gingerbread crumb, cheese, pickled red cabbage and a cranberry chilli jam all packed into the traditional glazed soft white long roll; all the best tastes of Christmas with a little twist. It’s been named one of London’s best Christmas sandwiches by Time Out so they must be doing something right…

Ecology Soap is dedicated to bringing you the “cleanest’ soaps, skin care and cleansing solutions on earth. They are committed to plant based, biodynamic personal care, as well as non-toxic cleaning solutions for laundry and home. Their products are made with hydrating organic oils, botanicals, and wholesome ingredients of the highest quality. All soaps and cleaners are sustainably formulated, eco-friendly and packaged with compostable or recyclable materials.

Founded by Louise Michaud, this brand is making a name for itself in the industry and we spent some time with her to find out more about her plans for the future and more…

Tell us about the journey that lead you to launching Ecology Soap?
I was casually reading through social media posts and came across an article on toxicity in laundry products, more specifically dryer sheets. I was dismayed to learn that ingredients are generally not listed on these products, so consumers do not know of the potentially hazardous chemicals in their laundry products. After further research, I also found that there was a marketing trend of labeling cleaners and detergents as “green” for containing few so-called natural or eco-friendly ingredients, while the majority of other compounds in the “green” formula were synthetic.

Upon further research, I found the same applied to bath and body products. Many companies which promote their products as natural or handmade also use synthetic chemicals to enhance product appeal. Those beautifully colored soaps and bath bombs you see in the stores, for example, get their hues from synthetic dyes or colorants. Beware of those vibrant fuchsias and blues; they aren’t natural. Many of these products also use artificial fragrances, even if they do contain natural ingredients.

I was inspired to create a different type of “soap” company, founded upon developing a brand that avoided these practices, and providing transparency to the consumer with honest labeling and sourcing the “cleanest” ingredients possible. The majority of our products contain certified organic ingredients, and that is what sets us apart from other companies. We also will never use artificial fragrances or colorants in our products. In fact, our products are free from sulfates, parabens, GMOs, formaldehyde, phthalates, PABA, DEA or mineral oils.

Ecology Soap’s commitment to purity also extends from product to package. We focus on bar soaps because liquid soaps use five times more energy for raw material production and twenty times more for packaging. Our boxes are recyclable and made from post-consumer paper. Our business cards are made from recycled t-shirts, and we have recently begun using a green printer that uses soy-based ink for our labeling.

You’re committed to bringing consumers the cleanest soaps on earth, how do you go about this?
Our soap makers are carefully vetted and must meet our company credo. They are also involved in our annual certification via Leaping Bunny, the international certification standard for cruelty-free designation.

Do you plan on expanding your range outside of soap?
Yes, in response to the health hazards associated with the use of talcum powder, we just added a Powder Room to our website, featuring a line of 100% natural, talc-free body powders in seven unique scents: Mandarin Spice, Evergreen, Cedarwood Sage, Lemongrass, Lavender, Key Lime and Peppermint Tea Tree. Their essential oil based aromas are absolutely heavenly.

We also expanded with a “Spa Stop” that includes hand-loomed organic Turkish towels, aromatherapeutic shea butter infused socks, vintage glass soap dishes, bamboo brushes and more.

What does 2020 look like for the brand?
The year will be busy as we expand our brand into more brick and mortar store locations. I also expect to launch a line of fair trade sugar and coffee scrubs.

You’re members of the Rainforest Alliance which is incredible, how important is being sustainable to you?
Sustainability is of utmost important in terms of the environment, but so is sourcing ingredients from farmers that earn a living wage. When you see our brand’s notation that our oil is RSPO certified, you are assured not only that cultivation practices are in keeping with environmental sustainability, but also that the local population is fairly paid for the work they do. RSPO certified palm growers account for only 19% of the overall market.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?
I am actually coming to London in May and cannot wait since London has long been on the bucket list. Ecology Soap is a sponsor of the National Social Media Awards in May, and we will be attending the red carpet event to be broadcast into 60 million European households.

Eventually, I am planning to expand into an international line that will feature the “cleanest” soaps from makers around the world, so expect to be traveling on a regular basis. I see travel to known “soap” centers in southern France, Turkey and some off-the-beaten-track areas in the Middle East. At the top of my bucket list, however, is a trip around the Greek isles.

Outside of the business, what do you like to do for fun?
Since Ecology Soap is a young business, much of my time is devoted to its development. I also teach classics at a university here in New York, so time outside those two endeavors is supremely challenged. I do love to travel, however, especially when it is for archaeological purposes. I’m also a huge baseball fan and eagerly await next season.

What does self care mean to you?
I think finding a work-life balance is very important and honestly, I tend to struggle with this. I think getting regular exercise and spending time with friends and relations are most important to me. It’s easy to let those imperatives lapse when you are busy. Self care also means controlling what you expose yourself to in your daily environment and I think being a knowledgeable consumer is necessary for that.

The state capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia takes the slogan from the state website seriously – Virginia is for Lovers – both for lovers of history and for lovers of unbelievably good deals. The city of Richmond is home to a lot of historic sites from the American Revolution, to the Civil War, even up to World War II. Even better, most of these tourist destinations are surprisingly cheap, if not free, for the public.

Before you get your traveling bags packed and your next flight to Virginia booked, first check these 10 things you should know about Richmond, Virginia.

  1. Free Guided Tours at the Virginia State Capitol

The heart of the state government also houses the oldest legislative body in North America, the Virginia General Assembly, which traces its origins as the House of Burgesses back in 1619. The Palladian and Early Republic architectural marvel’s biggest claim to fame is that it was designed by Thomas Jefferson – better known as one of the United States’ Founding Fathers as well as its third president.

Tourists can join any of the free guided tours and learn about its origins, design, and other interesting tidbits of trivia. Afterward, feel free to stroll and take photos of the grounds and gardens. Also, Capitol Square, which surrounds the Capitol Building, is home to monuments dedicated to notable children of the state of Virginia who have gone on and made history such as the aforementioned Thomas Jefferson, and writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe.

  1. Old-Timey Cinema Feels at the Byrd Theatre

This cinema in the Carytown neighborhood of Richmond first opened its doors to the public in 1928 and has retained the same old ambiance until today. The establishment follows a French Empire design with the orchestra and balcony seating areas and includes crystal chandeliers, imported Turkish and Italian marbles, and oil- on- canvas murals inspired by events in the Greek mythology.

Enjoy the feel of watching in an old cinema but with modern and recently released movies for only two dollars.

  1. Take the family for an eco- friendly afternoon at the James River Park System

The JRPS covers 550 hectares of area along the James River. Visitors can take go hiking, biking, or horseback riding along 15 miles of trails. Better yet, there is a wheelchair-accessible trail available along Green Hill Pond. For those interested in a quiet yet challenging experience, go fishing at either the fishing ponds or even along the length of James River itself. There are also six picnic shelters and seven more picnic areas in the open space in the park for the family to rest and recuperate. Should a single afternoon be insufficient, there are also cabins and lodges available for visitors.

During the month of May, the JRPS hosts the Dominion Riverrock, an annual outdoor lifestyle festival with a variety of activities, booths, live music, and activities for guests of all ages to enjoy.

  1. Visit the church witness to the birth of American Independence

While this entry in the list is a church, it draws tourists mostly for historical reasons. Recalling American History, St. John’s Episcopal Church is the very church is where Patrick Henry, considered as one of the Founding Fathers, declared the immortal words “Give me liberty, or give me death!” The church graveyard is also the eternal resting place of Edgar Allan Poe’s mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe. George Wythe, a noted scholar, Virginia judge, and a signatory of the Declaration of Independence, also rests here.

During the United States’ commemoration of Memorial Day to Labor Day, St. John’s Episcopal Church also hosts a re-enactment of the Second Virginia Convention which definitely features Patrick Henry’s historic words. Admission for children below seven years old is free, and about six to eight dollars to visitors above seven years old.

  1. Relive the life and times of Edgar Allan Poe in his own Museum

This museum dedicated to the famed American author is located in the Shockoe Bottom section of Richmond. The museum showcases one of the largest collections of Poe’s original, signed manuscripts, first editions of his works as they appeared in the newspapers of the day, as well as some of his personal belongings both from his childhood and later on in life.

Aside from the life and times of “The Raven” author, tourists are also given a glimpse of early 19th century Richmond with its dioramas and artworks, serving to better illustrate the environment where Poe lived, worked, and started his writings.

  1. Be the Black Sheep at the Black Sheep

One of the most famous restaurants in the United States, the Black Sheep made history with its tasty and seriously massive battleship sandwiches. Dive in and eat your fill in this hip, intimate Southern restaurant which offers authentic southern and Cajun-inspired dishes. Moreover, they have also updated their menus to include greener and friendlier options. A tip for the traveler, never order anything tagged “whole” in their menu, unless you have three or four friends to help you clean it up.

  1. Relive the notable events at the Virginia Historical Society

Found in Richmond’s aptly named Museum District, the Virginia Historical Society is home to a breathtakingly large collection of the state’s Civil War history – photographs, newspaper clippings, books, family records, business transactions, and even sheet music copies. For museum enthusiasts who are quite particular with the Civil War era, this site is definitely one of the must-see attractions in Richmond, Virginia.

Aside from the Civil War exhibit, tourists may also find a variety of displays on the state’s natural history, the native inhabitants of the area, as well as famous Virginians in different fields.

The Historical Society also hosts exclusive member-only events, lectures, and classes held by noted university professors, as well as family and youth activities for everyone to enjoy.

One of the main selling points of the Virginia Historical Society is that admission is free, allowing more and more visitors to come and appreciate the exhibits it offers. Take note, however, that special exhibits might require a small admission fee that, based on the reviews, is definitely worth it.
