I love the gym, I go at least four to five times a week but just recently I found I was bored of my routine and not seeing the results I was expecting.   I decided to shake things up and swap my gym visits for Reformer Pilates classes three times a week. And let me tell you, it was a game-changer.

I booked into Chilli Pilates for a four-week course of classes.  Based in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire their contemporary studios offer dynamic reformer classes with their team of skilled, knowledgeable and friendly instructors.

If you’ve never tried reformer Pilates, let me give you the low-down. Picture a long, sleek contraption with a sliding carriage, springs, and various straps and handles – that’s the reformer bed. It might look a bit intimidating at first, but trust me, its easy to use and at Chilli studios the instructors take the time to show you how to set up the bed for each exercise.

I’ll admit, I was sceptical at first, I like to leave the gym feeling like I’ve been put through my paces so was expecting some stretching and breathing.   Boy, was I wrong.  Reformer Pilates isn’t just about stretching, it’s a full-body workout that strengthens your core, improves flexibility, and enhances your overall muscle tone. Unlike traditional mat Pilates, which relies solely on body weight for resistance, the Reformer adds an extra challenge by incorporating spring resistance. This means you can adjust the intensity of your workout by simply swapping your spring, making it suitable for everyone from beginners to seasoned athletes.  Plus, it’s low-impact, which means it’s gentle on your joints.

After my first class I felt like I had done a full body workout.  Reformer Pilates may look easy, but don’t be fooled, it’s anything but. Each class was a challenging mix of strength training, cardio, and flexibility exercises, all rolled into one. From ‘the hundred’ to ‘the elephant’ to ‘the plank,’ every move engaged muscles I never even knew I had.   After two weeks I was able to adjust the springs and challenge myself.   To mix things up a little, I booked into Chilli Pilates 1-2-1 cardio class.  My instructor, Beth created a bespoke workout for me that combined the reformer and cardio based exercises.  Again, it left me feeling like I had physically pushed myself.

I found that the classes gave me a sense of calm.  Unlike the hustle and bustle of the gym, from the moment I stepped into the studio I felt relaxed.  Low level music and lighting set the tone, and I spent the whole 50 minutes focussing on each movement, checking my form and listening to the instructor.  It’s a fantastic way to switch off and be present.

After just a few weeks of reformer Pilates sessions, I noticed a significant improvement in my strength, flexibility, and overall muscle tone. My posture had never been better, my clothes fit more comfortably, and I had more energy and stamina than ever before. Plus, the low-impact nature of reformer Pilates means I could push myself without worrying about sustaining an injury.

One of the biggest changes I noticed was improved core strength and definition. Because the carriage is unstable, your core muscles have to work overtime to stabilise your body and maintain form. This not only strengthens your core but also improves your balance and stability, essential for preventing injuries both in and out of the gym.

But perhaps the best thing about reformer Pilates is the diverse classes. Unlike mindlessly running on a treadmill or lifting weights in a crowded gym, reformer Pilates keeps things interesting with a constant variety of exercises and movements. Women, for example, always hold onto a bit more fat than men do, so don’t let the scales freak you out.

Afterwards, you are given a semi-wetsuit outfit to wear, before putting on the wearable tech (that needs to be worn wet by the way) around your body, arms and legs. It is through these garments that the electronic currents will pulse throughout your body.

The workouts can be as hard or as easy as you want. For 20 minutes, you will be doing low impact exercises such as squats, lunges, and arm raises – with a current of electricity activating muscle groups you didn’t even know you had. The strength of the electric current is also dependent on your tolerance level – so you don’t have to worry about getting shocked.

While I’m used to quite hardcore workouts, the 20 minute low-impact workout at Feel Electric definitely left my muscles feeling toned and tired – and I certainly felt it the next day. If you’d asked me about running 18 months ago, I would have told you that the only thing I ran was a bath. However, following a personal mission to become the very best version of myself, running is now a part of my everyday life (I’m still shocked that I can say that!)

I’ve lost over 50 pounds, fallen in love with pounding the pavement and have ticked off multiple 10k runs with a view to running my first half marathon in the near future. When I started, I simply put on a pair of trainers, began running and hoped for the best. I literally took it one step at a time and probably fell victim to all the common mistakes beginner runners make.

From my lack of post-running nutrition to my insufficient support when it came to my footwear, I’ve been learning on the job.

Fortunately, for any wannabe runners out there, I’m here to share my top three tips to go from beginner to running pro, so you can avoid the pitfalls and mistakes I made to get here.

Pick the Right Footwear with Runners Need

I feel embarrassed to admit this now, but when I started running, I was wearing a pair of £20 Pink Soda trainers just because they were cute. Gait Analysis

It was such a learning experience, and I was really pleased to discover that I have a normal running style and don’t run the risk of looking like Phoebe from Friends.

Love & Salt is a fantastic low-key Manhattan Beach restaurant by Chef Michael Fiorelli. Their food philosophy is that food only needs two ingredients to be great — love & salt; and this philosophy can be tasted throughout their gorgeous Italian inspired menu. Their cozy atmosphere, and curated but approachable wine-list, make Love & Salt truly enjoyable culinary experience. No bells and whistles, just good, clean, well-made food. Try their Freehkilicious Salad, a five grain, five herb salad that became my instant favourite; and also the California Endive Salad. Yummy food — without all the empty calories!

Located on the super cool Venice Beach, Cafe Gratitude is all about serving earnestly good Vegan fare. Everything on the menu is named after a positive affirmation. The Kale Cesar said is called “Dazzling,” the Raw Pesto Kelp Noodles is called “Liberated” while the Daily Dessert Special is called “Remarkable”. Many people think of getting a nice sculpted body by just sitting on the couch watching TV and eating junk food. But that is not just possible. #1 Eat the right food

#4 Get enough sleep

As most of us are involved with a 8-hour job, it becomes essential to get adequate sleep to prepare your body for the next day. For your body to keep it going throughout the day, you need at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep. However, if you feel tired after work, taking a small nap is advisable. Don’t take a long nap of more than half an hour otherwise it will keep you awake till late night.

#5 Keep motivating yourself

One of the most important keys to stay in shape is being positive and keep yourself motivated. If you keep a positive mindset, you will be able to keep your body in shape. Rather than telling yourself ‘I am too busy to workout’, tell ‘I should make my health a priority’. Over time those positive thoughts will eliminate negative ones, and thus, helping you make your choices better.
