I love the gym, I go at least four to five times a week but just recently I found I was bored of my routine and not seeing the results I was expecting.   I decided to shake things up and swap my gym visits for Reformer Pilates classes three times a week. And let me tell you, it was a game-changer.

I booked into Chilli Pilates for a four-week course of classes.  Based in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire their contemporary studios offer dynamic reformer classes with their team of skilled, knowledgeable and friendly instructors.

If you’ve never tried reformer Pilates, let me give you the low-down. Picture a long, sleek contraption with a sliding carriage, springs, and various straps and handles – that’s the reformer bed. It might look a bit intimidating at first, but trust me, its easy to use and at Chilli studios the instructors take the time to show you how to set up the bed for each exercise.

I’ll admit, I was sceptical at first, I like to leave the gym feeling like I’ve been put through my paces so was expecting some stretching and breathing.   Boy, was I wrong.  Reformer Pilates isn’t just about stretching, it’s a full-body workout that strengthens your core, improves flexibility, and enhances your overall muscle tone. Unlike traditional mat Pilates, which relies solely on body weight for resistance, the Reformer adds an extra challenge by incorporating spring resistance. This means you can adjust the intensity of your workout by simply swapping your spring, making it suitable for everyone from beginners to seasoned athletes.  Plus, it’s low-impact, which means it’s gentle on your joints.

After my first class I felt like I had done a full body workout.  Reformer Pilates may look easy, but don’t be fooled, it’s anything but. Each class was a challenging mix of strength training, cardio, and flexibility exercises, all rolled into one. From ‘the hundred’ to ‘the elephant’ to ‘the plank,’ every move engaged muscles I never even knew I had.   After two weeks I was able to adjust the springs and challenge myself.   To mix things up a little, I booked into Chilli Pilates 1-2-1 cardio class.  My instructor, Beth created a bespoke workout for me that combined the reformer and cardio based exercises.  Again, it left me feeling like I had physically pushed myself.

I found that the classes gave me a sense of calm.  Unlike the hustle and bustle of the gym, from the moment I stepped into the studio I felt relaxed.  Low level music and lighting set the tone, and I spent the whole 50 minutes focussing on each movement, checking my form and listening to the instructor.  It’s a fantastic way to switch off and be present.

After just a few weeks of reformer Pilates sessions, I noticed a significant improvement in my strength, flexibility, and overall muscle tone. My posture had never been better, my clothes fit more comfortably, and I had more energy and stamina than ever before. Plus, the low-impact nature of reformer Pilates means I could push myself without worrying about sustaining an injury.

One of the biggest changes I noticed was improved core strength and definition. Because the carriage is unstable, your core muscles have to work overtime to stabilise your body and maintain form. This not only strengthens your core but also improves your balance and stability, essential for preventing injuries both in and out of the gym.

But perhaps the best thing about reformer Pilates is the diverse classes. Unlike mindlessly running on a treadmill or lifting weights in a crowded gym, reformer Pilates keeps things interesting with a constant variety of exercises and movements. Plus, the small class sizes mean you’ll get plenty of personalised attention from your instructor, ensuring your posture is correct and you get the most out of your workout.

To find out more about reformer Pilates, visit Chilli Pilates where you can book your first class for just £10 and invite a friend for free.

Have you ever heard of Electro-Muscular-Stimulation? This technology is fuelling Feel Electric, London’s best new workout craze. It uses a wearable device that stimulates your muscles through tiny electrodes that accelerate the efficacy of your workouts, toning your body like it’s nobody’s business.

Feel Electric, offers high-tech EMS training that helps you blast those unruly and unwanted fats in a safe studio environment. Could it be London’s best new workout craze? Our girl Hannah Tan-Gillies finds out.

According to Feel Electric, each EMS session activates 90% of your muscle fibres, which means that EMS workouts push your muscles so much harder than a regular gym workout can. For reference, a 20 minute EMS workout is the equivalent of a two hour session at the gym.

Also, low-impact EMS workouts have been known to reduce subcutaneous fat mass, body fat percentage and boosts your basal metabolic rate, which means that you can burn calories while resting.

It also helps tighten your connective tissues as you activate a vast portion of your muscles, which often get overlooked, during your EMS sessions. This helps tone your skin and also reduce cellulite.

The 1-2-1 sessions mean that every workout is tailored to your body type and goals, and with the help of an expert trainer who guides you through the entire workout, you know that you can do it safely too.

For first timers, the experience begins with a measurement of your Body Mass Index, which is admittedly always a daunting ordeal. Don’t fret though the trainers at Feel Electric go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and also explain what the different measurements mean. Women, for example, always hold onto a bit more fat than men do, so don’t let the scales freak you out.

Afterwards, you are given a semi-wetsuit outfit to wear, before putting on the wearable tech (that needs to be worn wet by the way) around your body, arms and legs. It is through these garments that the electronic currents will pulse throughout your body.

The workouts can be as hard or as easy as you want. For 20 minutes, you will be doing low impact exercises such as squats, lunges, and arm raises – with a current of electricity activating muscle groups you didn’t even know you had. The strength of the electric current is also dependent on your tolerance level – so you don’t have to worry about getting shocked.

While I’m used to quite hardcore workouts, the 20 minute low-impact workout at Feel Electric definitely left my muscles feeling toned and tired – and I certainly felt it the next day. For people who are short on time and want to maximise the results of their sessions, Feel Electric is certainly a great choice. No wonder it is electrifying London’s yummy mummies and fitness fanatics. Could it be London’s best new workout craze? If you’re short on time and want maximum impact, then definitely give this a shot.

If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to start running but you’ve already fallen off the bandwagon or you are returning to running after a break, our Editor-in-Chief is sharing her top tips for running to help you get back on track with a little help from Runners Need…

If you’d asked me about running 18 months ago, I would have told you that the only thing I ran was a bath. However, following a personal mission to become the very best version of myself, running is now a part of my everyday life (I’m still shocked that I can say that!)

I’ve lost over 50 pounds, fallen in love with pounding the pavement and have ticked off multiple 10k runs with a view to running my first half marathon in the near future. When I started, I simply put on a pair of trainers, began running and hoped for the best. I literally took it one step at a time and probably fell victim to all the common mistakes beginner runners make.

From my lack of post-running nutrition to my insufficient support when it came to my footwear, I’ve been learning on the job.

Fortunately, for any wannabe runners out there, I’m here to share my top three tips to go from beginner to running pro, so you can avoid the pitfalls and mistakes I made to get here.

Usain Bolt, watch out.

Pick the Right Footwear with Runners Need

I feel embarrassed to admit this now, but when I started running, I was wearing a pair of £20 Pink Soda trainers just because they were cute. I didn’t even know anything about trainers (I’m a heels kind of gal), let alone the fact that there are multiple types of trainers based on the kind of runner you are.

Fortunately, after a visit to my local Runners Need store, I was armed and dangerous with all the knowledge I needed to up my game. When it comes to picking the right footwear, you can choose from motion control, cushioned, stability, lightweight, and trail – who knew!?

Stepping into my new trainers for the first time was a game-changer. As I hit the pavement, I immediately noticed a whole new level of comfort and support that I hadn’t experienced before.

The cushioning hugged my feet just right, providing a perfect balance of stability and flexibility with every stride. It was as if my feet had found their perfect match, and I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement coursing through me as I set off on my run.

With each step, I felt more connected to the ground beneath me, more confident in my movements and more eager than ever to push myself further. Thanks to my new trainers from Runners Need, every run became not just a workout, but an exhilarating journey towards becoming the best version of myself.

Gait Analysis

Not sure which type of footwear you need? Then Gait Analysis is the place to start. This is an assessment of how your body moves during running and how your feet make contact with the floor. It sounds super technical, but fortunately for me, the lovely Wendy in my local Harrogate Runners Need store made the entire process really fun.

I spent some time trying out different trainers and running on the treadmill, and then, collectively, we viewed my feet in slow motion on the screen to dictate the style of shoes running trainers that I needed. It was such a learning experience, and I was really pleased to discover that I have a normal running style and don’t run the risk of looking like Phoebe from Friends.

You can book in at your local Runners Need store for the 30 minute session which is free when you buy a pair of running trainers.

Wear the Best Running Gear

When I’m not running, I’ll be wearing dresses and heels, so it’s important to me to feel good about myself and now the same goes for when I am running.

At the early stages of my running life, I joked with my audience about how I looked homeless when I worked out. Mainly because of how unfit I was, I literally looked like death warmed up every time I did a run.

However, you have to get comfortable with the uncomfortable and over time, I started to look less disheveled and I wanted this to reflect in the outfits that I wore.

Looking good helps you feel good, and if you’re anything like me, then you’ll love any excuse to buy new clothes. I picked out a gorgeous set from Under Armour via Runners Need, the one-stop-shop for all things running, to go with my sparkly new trainers, and they added some serious fire to my running. I literally couldn’t wait to wear my new garments.

As someone who’s experienced firsthand the transformative power of running, I can’t stress enough the importance of having the right gear to support your journey. That’s why I was so pleased to discover Runners Need. Not only do they offer top-notch in-store gait analysis services, ensuring you find the perfect footwear for your individual needs, but they also pride themselves on being the ultimate specialists in running kit.

With their latest new season range boasting the best products from world-leading brands, you can trust that you’re getting quality gear that’s designed to enhance your performance and comfort. Whether you’re a beginner like I once was or a seasoned runner, Runners Need has everything you need to reach your goals and make the most of every run.

So, if you’re ready to take your running game to the next level, look no further than Runners Need – because when you have the right gear, there’s no limit to what you can achieve on the road or trail.

Unleash Your Inner Dancer: MVMT at The Manor London

Class started with a quick warmup and stretching *a must for any class, then a focus on technique. With heels, the walk and the attitude are everything so mastering the art of walking in heels and the confidence of walking is a must.

Then we moved on to choreo, where we unleashed our inner ‘naughty girls’ with a sexy, empowering and bombastic choreography of Beyonce’s early 2000s classic. Tarek broke down the steps very clearly, ensuring that I understood each sequence before moving onto the next one. While I certainly broke a sweat, the final performance was certainly well worth it. Check it out below.

So — if you’ve ever dreamed of moving like a dancer, this is the place to make that dream a reality. Book a class at MVMT at The Manor London today so you can unleash your inner dancer too.

Located on the beautiful stretch of the Bwejuu – Paje beach in the South east coast of the island, named one of the world top 30 islands, Baraza Resort & Spa is like your own private little slice of paradise. There are only 30 palatial villas, each one with its own private plunge pool and an indulgent amount of space for guests to really immerse themselves in the sheer grandeur of it all. Team Coco got the chance to escape the chilly London winter and find some sun (and our zen) with the Baraza Resort & Spa.

We tried their Yoga retreat package, a 6 day retreat that combines a wonderfully inclusive series of Hatha yoga sessions and some truly rejuvenating massage treatments at the world-renowned Frangipani spa. There is no better to find your center than at the Baraza Resort & Spa. So if you’re feeling the need to renew your sense of calm in one of the world’s most beautiful luxury resorts— then here’s how.

Wake up to a light tropical breeze in your own palatial villa, and casually stroll along the resort’s many stunning courtyards, and eventually finding a spot by the beach, where you are serenaded by the gentle crashing of the waves of the Indian Ocean. Here’s where our morning practice begins.

Our yogi, the truly charming Sree greets you with a big smile on his face, and prepares the setup for this morning’s Hatha Yoga Practice. Get ready for some OHM.

Make your way back to the Livingstone Terrace restaurant for a lovely buffet-style breakfast. Everything here is locally sourced, and is a mixture of Swahili and international cuisine. Do try the dried coconuts dipped in honey, and partake in some bespoke smoothies — or maybe even a watermelon juice.

Head over to the world-renowned Frangipani spa, where your lovely therapist will lead you through yet another palatial courtyard and into, what I consider to be the world’s most beautiful relaxation room. The Frangipani spa’s therapists are all impeccable, and you can literally feel all of your worries will melt away.

Catch some sun and take a dip in your own private plunge pool. After all, you need to make the most of your stunning private villa. So reading your favourite magazine (House of Coco obviously) and playing some tunes is definitely recommended.

Catch a private Swahili cooking lesson with some of Baraza Resort & Spa’s top chefs. We learned how to cook Chicken Dhansak, following the recipe of one of Zanzibar’s most iconic personalities, Farouk Bulsara, aka Freddy Mercury.

Finish off the afternoon, with a cup (or five) of Masala Tea. This unique spiced tea was a definite favourite during our visit, and is also a very calming concoction.

Treat yourself to a glass of Dawa at the Dhababu Bar & Lounge, a local cocktail that mixes gin, cognac, lemon, and honey. The locals call it ‘medicine’ and it surely hits the spot after a serious day of relaxation at the Baraza Resort & Spa. Head over to the Sultan’s Dining Room for a fabulous meal. Here you can enjoy a menu that showcases the best of the island while being serenaded by the music of the Taarab band.

From relaxing Pranayamas to Yoga Shala meditations, you will definitely leave Zanzibarwith a whole new level of calm. One that can only be achieved amidst the breathtaking natural scenery of the Baraza Resort & Spa.

Los Angeles is the epitome of what California is all about. The palm-tree lined boulevards of Beverly Hills, the colourful houses of Venice Beach, the art-deco buildings of DTLA, the glitzy shops on Melrose Place, are all parts of what make Los Angeles unique.

One thing about Los Angeles that really stands out, is their passion for health and wellness. Yoga on the beach, organic smoothies, and cold-pressed juices are all the rage in LA, and is probably one of the reasons they live such chilled-out, happy, and healthy lives (that and maybe the perpetually sunny weather too) Team Coco shoes you how to eat your way through LA – in the cleanest and greenest way possible with our top foodie picks in the City of Angels.

Best Girl
Located on the stunning art-deco building of the Ace Hotel DTLA, Best Girl is the perfect spot in the neighbourhood for a power lunch. Best Girl is named after the first film screened in their gothic Spanish theatre way back in 1927. The spectacular interiors serve as the perfect backdrop for their even more spectacular menu. Headed by the Michelin Star Chef Michael Cimarusti, who is known for championing sustainable seafood, Best Girl serves both fresh seasonal fare and also all the classics. Try out their Avocado “Alligator Pear” Toast – which is honestly one of the best Avocado Toasts you’ll have on the West Coast.

Love & Salt
Love & Salt is a fantastic low-key Manhattan Beach restaurant by Chef Michael Fiorelli. Their food philosophy is that food only needs two ingredients to be great — love & salt; and this philosophy can be tasted throughout their gorgeous Italian inspired menu. Their cozy atmosphere, and curated but approachable wine-list, make Love & Salt truly enjoyable culinary experience. No bells and whistles, just good, clean, well-made food. Try their Freehkilicious Salad, a five grain, five herb salad that became my instant favourite; and also the California Endive Salad. Yummy food — without all the empty calories!

Cafe Gratitude
Located on the super cool Venice Beach, Cafe Gratitude is all about serving earnestly good Vegan fare. Everything on the menu is named after a positive affirmation. The Kale Cesar said is called “Dazzling,” the Raw Pesto Kelp Noodles is called “Liberated” while the Daily Dessert Special is called “Remarkable”. You are then invited to order by saying; “I am Dazzling,” “I am Liberated” or “I am Remarkable” – so you leave Cafe Gratitude with both a happy tummy and a happy heart.

If you are reading this, then we would like to congratulate you on taking a step forward towards a healthy lifestyle. Many people think of getting a nice sculpted body by just sitting on the couch watching TV and eating junk food. But that is not just possible. Although getting your body into shape seems like sweating and time consuming process, the effort you put has a positive impact on your life. If you wish to begin your fitness journey for a healthy and happy life, here are some advice and tips you should follow.

#1 Eat the right food

Vegetables and fruits are the best things to eat for anyone willing to get into the shape. Apple, for instance, can make your tummy feel full for up to four hours. Broccoli and beans have the ability to keep your digestive system clean and well-functioning. Lean meats such as chicken and seafood such as shrimps are a great source of protein and other nutrients that can keep your muscles fit. You can buy fresh foods at the best price using vouchers and dealsas it’s the new trend nowadays and it saves you more money than buying it from a market.

#2 Take the right portion of the meal

Along with eating the right foods, it is also necessary to decide the right portion of your meals. The metabolism can improve from well portioning your meals. Try to eat smaller portions six times rather than consuming three large portions a day. Consuming smaller portions will help you with breathing smoother during your workout sessions. As there will be less amount of food in your body, more energy will be spent in your exercise.

#3 Exercise every day

Include exercising at least for an hour in your everyday routine. You don’t have to be tough on yourself by doing a lot of jogging and running, but you should do some moderate physical exercise that can keep muscles active. Go on for a short walk or do physical exercise at certain intervals. It may seem stressful in the beginning, but know that your body is changing for better. Make sure you drink enough water and intake protein rich food after every workout session.

#4 Get enough sleep

As most of us are involved with a 8-hour job, it becomes essential to get adequate sleep to prepare your body for the next day. For your body to keep it going throughout the day, you need at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep. However, if you feel tired after work, taking a small nap is advisable. Don’t take a long nap of more than half an hour otherwise it will keep you awake till late night.

#5 Keep motivating yourself

One of the most important keys to stay in shape is being positive and keep yourself motivated. If you keep a positive mindset, you will be able to keep your body in shape. Rather than telling yourself ‘I am too busy to workout’, tell ‘I should make my health a priority’. Let’s take a look at Charity Witt’s success as an example, a medical undergraduate who became homeless and worked her way out of poverty only to become a world famous power lifter while suffering spinal deformities. Over time those positive thoughts will eliminate negative ones, and thus, helping you make your choices better.

If you are looking to shed stress, eat clean and chill out then retreat to the secluded, less commercial south side of Mauritius for a rejuvenating wellness break at Anantara Iko Resort. Known for its self-healing benefits, the touch therapy of Abhyanga massage aims to balance dosha types using oils mixed with herbs for maximum benefits which stimulate the nervous system, enhance coordination between sensory organs, while strengthening muscles. This massage supports healing, boosts energy, reduces recovery time after an injury, eases pain, and enhances relaxation, mood, and wellbeing.

Day 3:

The ancient self-healing practice of Qi Gong creates a calmness of the mind while powering the body with movements that improve joint flexibility and muscle strength. Qi Gong also supports balance and harmony within the body, improves digestion, and can be an effective treatment for insomnia and many other sleep disorders.

Day 4:

The Ayurvedic therapy Shirodhara, which is a Sanskrit word coming from shro (head) and dhara (flow), involves gently pouring herbal oils over the forehead. This is ideal for those with a vata-pitta imbalance as it can harmonise the body’s energy, awaken intuition, improve memory, support sleep, focus attention and improve concentration.

Day 5:

Round up the five-day programme with a choice of Tai Chi or Qi Gong to absorb and reinforce the full benefits of the wellness programme. Through moving meditation, you maximise the calming effects on the mind and physical benefits to the body.
