Ask your average international tourist about the American coastline and the majority are going to mention California and Florida. However, if you question the well-travelled Americanophile, you are likely to hear mentions of Corpus Christi and Port Aransas on the Texas coastline. The breezy excitement of the former is the perfect foil for the laid-back island lifestyle of the latter.

The city has played host to the Windsurfing World Championships due to the windy nature of the locality. This is ideal during the warmer months when you can enjoy a cooling breeze on a sunset cruise with the likes of Texas Tease. You can enjoy a leisurely cruise around Corpus Christi Bay on a 74-foot sightseeing boat. They can serve up high-quality dinner fare with local shrimp and oyster Rockefeller.

If you want to pilot your vessel innovatively, then you should consider Glow Row. It is a night-time kayaking experience guided by glowing lights which surround your transparent kayak. Their North Padre Island – Sunset Island route is ideal for beginners as the waters are very shallow there and it is relatively easy to spot some marine life.

Sightseeing ideas

There are a multitude of varied offerings in Corpus Christi. If you didn’t spot any aquatic creatures during your kayaking, you will at The Texas State Aquarium, the largest of its kind in Texas. They have an interactive stingray lagoon. You can spot reef sharks in their eye-catching curved aquarium with a 68-foot-long acrylic window, which is the longest in North America. You can enjoy an acrobatic show at Dolphin Bay. And the most fulfilling part is learning about their conservation work at their newly opened wildlife rescue centre.

Nearby is the USS Lexington, which is a former WWII aircraft carrier and currently a naval museum. The most popular part is the flight deck with 20 historic aircraft on board with the centrepiece being Maverick’s F-14 Tomcat jet from the original Top Gun film. There is plenty to experience below deck too from a flight operations tour to a fascinating late-night paranormal investigation.

You can savour the cowboy lifestyle by going on a visit to King Ranch. It is the largest ranch in the United States, bigger than the country of Luxembourg. You can go on a ranch tour where they explain the modern-day workings of their business. You can visit King Ranch Museum to appreciate the history of the brand and purchase the finest leather goods and outdoor gear at their saddle shop.

Where to eat

A visit to the institution, Water Street Oyster Bar is a must. They’ve been serving Corpus Christi since 1983. They’ve recently expanded to oyster farming in Copano Bay nearby. Their menu is a seafood lover’s paradise with everything from wood-grilled oysters to shrimp picayune. Their sister restaurant, Elizabeth’s at the iconic Art Museum of South Texas is equally worth a visit. Their Mediterranean-inspired menu includes shakshuka and Italian torte for brunch. Whilst the museum houses fascinating temporary exhibitions such as the blockbuster, Collidoscope: De La Torre Brothers retro-perspective.

Port Aransas

Affectionately known as Port A by the locals. It is all about island life in this part of Texas, especially as the town has a population of less than 3,500.

Cruising to carting

You can also enjoy a cruising experience at Port A, but their offering is more geared towards the family with Red Dragon Pirate Cruise. There are interactive games on board but it is more about dolphin watching and admiring the scenic coastline. Another mode of transport that is popular with locals and tourists alike is the golf carts that are ubiquitous all over town. Visit at the right time of the year and you might spot their iconic Christmas golf cart parade, their Mardi Gras parade, their pirate parade or even their graduation parade. It is a great way to see the town highlights including Horace Caldwell Pier, its jetties and Roberts Point Park.

Embracing the wildlife

For bird-watchers, a visit to Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center is sheer heaven. You can observe hundreds of local and migratory birds in this wetland area. There are sheltered observation towers along with a 700-foot boardwalk. You can observe waterfowl, grebes, shorebirds and flaming pink Roseate Spoonbills, which is the Port A city bird. If you are lucky, you might even spot their resident alligator “Boots”. If you visit on certain days, they have free guided tours with binoculars provided for loan.

You get a feel of the passion locals have for their marine ecosystem by visiting the newly renovated Patton Education Center and Wetlands. There are interactive displays that help you understand the local marine life. Along with the Amos Rehabilitation Keep, which is all part of the campus of the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, you feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude that there might be hope for our seas. Rescued sea turtles are a major part of their project as the Gulf of Mexico is home to 5 of the 7 sea turtle species. You might spot the likes of Kemp’s ridley sea turtles or loggerhead sea turtles.

Dining the island life way

Fresh-from-the-sea ingredients in a laid-back environment are what you can expect at Port A. Fin’s Grill and Icehouse, which is a sister restaurant to the cruise company serves up classics from the region like a crispy shrimp PoBoy to unique creations like crab-stuffed gulf fish. They can all be washed down with a wide selection of margaritas. They have an elevated version that uses Dobel tequila and Gran Gala.

If you walked into Trout Street Bar & Grill, you might think fishing is a religion on the island. The menu offers everything from snapper to redfish to steelhead trout, all can be cooked in a variety of ways. There are historic photos of blue and white marlin being caught in the state and they offer you catch ’em we cook ’em service, which is also available at Fin’s Grill.

Finally, what better way to end your Texas coastal experience, than savouring a beachside shrimp boil around a bonfire, which can all be arranged with minimal fuss by the likes of Rollin’ Tide. Enjoying an authentic low country shrimp boil whilst admiring the sunset over Mustang Island with your feet in the sand is one of those little joys of life that will linger long in the memory.

As my car turns onto the sweeping drive of Schloss Roxburghe it’s hard not to be impressed. This country pile in the heart of the Scottish Borders stands proud amongst pretty gardens and perfectly manicured lawns against a backdrop of lush green countryside and rolling hills.

Once owned by the Duke of Roxburghe, this quintessential country house hotel has undergone a full refurbishment and expansion bringing an additional 58 rooms, self-catering cottages, and a Finnish inspired spa facility to the property. The new extended Estate House is sympathetic to the rest of the hotel. The seamless extension boasts similar rich colours and textures to the main house that it’s hard to spot the old from the new. Tartans combined with oak, natural stone and plush textiles successfully fuse Scottish heritage with contemporary design. I checked into one of the new park view rooms that overlooks the championship golf course set amongst the grounds. The rooms in the new estate are spacious and modern, lots of white and teal dominate the colour palette with accents of gold. The bathroom has a large walk-in shower, heated floor and is loaded with Molton Brown toiletries.

Schloss Roxburghe is the perfect place to recharge your batteries. With over 300 acres of land including two and a half miles of the River Teviot, Trout Loch, beautiful parkland and Estate gardens, it is a fabulous place to enjoy nature. I spent an afternoon with the hotel’s very own Ray Mears, Ian Fairgrieve, to try my hand at some country outdoor pursuits. With an extensive programme of activities, you can find something to suit your preferences and skill level. First up for me was archery on the lawn in the front of the house. After a quick demonstration and advice from Ian I was firing arrows like Robin Hood. We then moved on to the lake for a bit of trout fishing. I’m a total novice when it comes to country pursuits but was instantly put at ease and was soon confidently casting for my catch. Shortly after I caught a trout, which was immediately sent to the kitchen to be cooked for my supper. However, my confidence was dashed at the shooting range as my hand eye coordination and reaction speed wasn’t hitting the mark. Despite not hitting one shot on target, I had great fun and learned some new skills.

After all the activities I was ready to relax. The new 1100sqm spa facility has floor to ceiling windows that look out to the grounds and a heated outdoor infinity edge pool. With a spacious indoor relaxation zone guests can unwind or book one of the spa treatments featuring Aromatherapy Associates and Kloris products. There’s an additional plunge pool, a Finnish dry sauna and an aromatic sauna.

Expect a warm welcome, the staff are the jewel in the Schloss crown bringing their relaxed, friendly Scottish disposition to your stay. The team are knowledgeable and quick to ensure you have everything you need to make your break enjoyable. In 1745, the hotel bar the resident mixologist will whip up something special using their own label gin, Lady Chatto Rose, distilled locally it includes botanicals grown on the grounds. You certainly won’t go hungry here, the food choice is extensive from loaded breakfast buffets to afternoon tea. Charlie’s, named after Bonnie Prince Charlie, who frequented the place in 1745, offers ‘Scottish bistronomy’, using the highest quality ingredients and gourmet cooking techniques. For those looking for something special then book the seven-course tasting menu at Sunlaws. Available with wine pairing it showcases fine dining at its best.

This rural retreat is a stunning Scottish hideaway, perfect for slowing down and unwinding. By the time I checked out, I felt every inch Lady of the Manor.

Forage Restaurant & Bar is the perfect hidden gem that you need to know about. It’s located down one of the cutest streets in the city called Little Stonegate. Packed with character and charm, Forage is the place to enjoy small plates and unique cocktails in a super-chilled environment. They even have a secret garden, that you need a password to enter!

Our writer Rachel McAlley visited with her fiancé and they sampled some tasty dishes, met some great staff members, and had an all-round wonderful experience.

Where do we begin? Let’s start with the menu, it includes dishes such as Yorkshire Pecorino Flatbread served with wild garlic butter and zaatar. How about Flame Grilled Prawns with herb zhug, or Confit Potatoes with a wild garlic emulsion? Might you fancy Halloumi with peppered honey, Khadafi pastry and pistachio?

Honestly, every dish is as exciting as it sounds, not only to taste but to see. Each small plate is presented beautifully and is served as and when the kitchen team has freshly prepared it. All the food is cooked over fire and they are serve a wonderfully eclectic contemporary European menu. Each month the owner and head chef at Forage add a couple of new dishes to the menu, making it slightly different every month.

We tried all of the previously mentioned dishes above, but also sampled the Tamarind Pork Belly Bao Bun, Spring Greens with Vadouvan butter, Lamb Rump, and Ribeye (pictured above).

The Pork Bao Bun (pictured above) was the dish that the staff suggested, as it was a favourite amongst the team working that evening at Forage. It lived up to the hype, mouth-wateringly good in fact, as the pork just melted in the mouth.

Our personal favourite was the Lamb Rump (pictured above), which was served with heritage tomato, ratatouille stuffed courgette flower (genius accompaniment), and black olive puree. The lamb is automatically served pink, so if you’re into less pink meat you will need to say, we did and we were blown away with how good it was even when well cooked. A close second came the Halloumi and Grilled Prawns, they were both extremely moreish.

Now, we have to give a special mention to the Confit Potatoes as they were, not to put too fine a point on it, but they were simply orgasmic. All we can say is, go to Forage and order a small plate of Confit Potatoes for yourself and you’ll see why they are organismic! Even writing about them now causes hot flushes, they were so unbelievably good.

We tried a couple of desserts, and they were just as beautifully presented as every other dish, you could tell that time and care had been put into each pudding. The Strawberry Mille Fuille (pictured below) was a taste sensation, with perfectly layered pastry, crème pâtissière, strawberry jelly, and fresh strawberries with sorbet on top. Our second dessert was the Lemon Meringue Pie, which had pretty flamed meringue peaks, delicate pastry, and tart lemon – another resounding success.

It was great to chat with some of the Forage Restaurant & Bar staff as we learned why the restaurant lives up to its name. The chefs personally forage for wild garlic on the outskirts of York city centre, and then transform their foraged garlic into emulsions, sauces, and drizzles. The bar even uses carrot peelings and ends to produce their own unique vodka drinks.

It is a restaurant experience where time stands still, small plates arrive, they’re enjoyed with a drink, another exciting dish arrives, and diners continue the cycle – it’s a wonderful way to spend an evening.

Regent Hong Kong Hotel recently reopened after their most extensive renovations in three decades. Their prime location on the Victoria Harbour waterfront has always meant it is a beloved institution by locals and tourists alike. It is the perfect location to catch the daily light and sound show, ‘A Symphony of Lights’ or the New Year’s Eve fireworks. It was always regarded as one of the big three hotels in Hong Kong along with The Peninsula and Mandarin Oriental.

Their in-house Cantonese restaurant which stayed open during the renovation, Lai Ching Heen is a world-class institution that has been showered with countless accolades from two Michelin stars to two diamonds in the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide. The dishes they offer are often Cantonese culinary treasures given a contemporary update. The decor is the definition of refined elegance. There are touches of gold and jade throughout the restaurant down to your place settings but the designs are never garish or forceful. Most guests will be more distracted by the floor-to-ceiling window showcasing a dynamic view of Victoria Harbour.

Executive Chef Lau Yiu Fai has over three decades of experience working with the hotel. Whilst head chef, Cheng Man Sang has worked with the executive chef for over two decades. What you get with their kitchen team is expertise married with innovation. The hotel has given them the platform to evolve the cuisine and always bring new ideas to the dining table.

Their ‘Premier Delicacy’ dinner menu is the showcase offering where you can taste their greatest hits and the immense variety of Cantonese cuisine. You’ll get to try Hokkaido scallops which are very much akin to their Orkney counterpart known for their clean, sweet taste. Their barbecue pork ‘char siu’ with honey is arguably the best version you’ll find in Hong Kong with the perfect ratio of meat to fat served up with an irresistible sweetness. Their clear Chinese soup offering is something you rarely encounter in the UK or Europe. Double-boiled fish maw with sea whelk and russula mushroom soup might sound exotic, but the ingredients provide countless benefits. For example, russula is used in Chinese medicine to treat liver and eye conditions.

The eye-catchers on their menu are undoubtedly the steamed lobster with tofu and crabmeat roe and braised whole abalone in oyster jus. The former is one of the most perfectly executed dishes on their menu. The tender, firm, succulent lobster meat injects the silky smooth tofu with both sweet and umami flavours. Any element that is over or undercooked would significantly impact the dish. Abalone is the definition of luxury in Cantonese restaurants and it’s still very much a delicacy waiting to be discovered by the Western world. Their version at the restaurant is a Japanese fresh abalone that has been braised and served in an oyster jus.

At Lai Ching Heen, you get to sample the finest of wagyu beef. Their set menu offers beef from Kagoshima, which produces more wagyu than any other prefecture in Japan. It is the epicentre of the country’s beef industry. Their wok-fried Kagoshima wagyu has a firm appearance on the outside, but a buttery soft tenderness on the inside. It is presented with an onion ring, peppers, lily bulbs and garlic. It is ideally paired with their fried rice wrapped in a lotus leaf to offer extra fragrant aromas.

Cantonese desserts are a hugely underrated gem. When executed well, they are more than a match with the finest crème brûlées and pastel de natas of this world. Their baked sago and custard cream pudding is similar to a rice pudding but littered with addictively chewy sago pearls. And their taro paste with black and white sesame roll is the perfect way to end a meal with subtle nuttiness and sweetness that will send you away from the restaurant with a satisfied grin.

Please note, they do have a dress code – smart elegant: closed-toed shoes, sleeved shirts and long trousers are required for gentlemen.

Maybe you want to start eating more healthily, or perhaps you want to branch out and try new foods. Whatever your reason for wanting to expand your diet in a healthy way, one thing is certain: there are a number of ways to reach this goal. For instance, the following four approaches can help you change your diet for the better:

Embrace a Clean Label Lifestyle

Have you ever read a list of ingredients and had to Google most of them to see what they are? The clean label approach to food is the exact opposite of this situation, and it can be a great way to make your diet healthier. Basically, clean label foods are those that contain as few ingredients as possible, and the ones that are included are things you are familiar with. For instance, clean label ingredients for a can of corn might be “corn, water.” As the clean label movement has grown in popularity, the range of products that offer clean label ingredients has also expanded, so you should be able to find a wide range of clean label foods. To try this approach, spend a bit of extra time at the supermarket reading lists of ingredients, and try to purchase only foods with clean labels.

Make Simple Substitutions

Another way to expand your food options in a healthy way is by making simple substitutions when cooking and during mealtimes. For instance, as Mass General Brigham notes, when baking cakes or brownies, try using applesauce for half of the oil listed on the recipe. This is an easy way to cut down on calories without skimping on flavor. Choosing nutrient and fiber-rich brown rice over white rice is also a healthy choice, as is whole wheat pasta instead of white pasta. It’s also easy to swap out full-fat dairy products in recipes. For instance, try plain fat-free Greek yogurt instead of full-fat sour cream, low-fat cream cheese instead of the regular variety, and skim or 1% milk instead of whole milk.

Try Small Portions of New Foods

Expanding your food palate does not have to be done in a drastic manner. Instead, WebMD suggests, consider adding one healthy and new-to-you food as a side dish at a familiar meal. This way, adding new foods to your diet will not feel as overwhelming, and if you don’t care for the dish, you will still have your regular meal. Commit to taking a few bites of the food, and if you don’t like it, assure yourself that it’s okay not to like everything and try another food the following day.

Experiment with Cooking Methods

If you want to eat more vegetables but you don’t really care for many of them, it might be in the way they have been prepared. For example, if you always pass over broccoli on a platter of raw veggies, you might try roasting the cruciferous veggie in the oven instead. On the other hand, if cooked carrots leave much to be desired, try them raw with a dip made from plain yogurt and fresh herbs, or grate them over your salad. You can also experiment with how you cook other healthy foods like fish; you might find you really enjoy a piece of salmon cooked on the grill with lemon and pepper, or that skinless chicken breast is much more flavorful when it’s sauteed along with a variety of herbs.

By focusing on clean label foods, making simple swaps throughout the day, sampling small portions of new foods, and trying out other ways to prepare foods you already like, you can easily improve your diet.

Each room, unique in design is spacious and bright, with lots of white, natural fabrics and sky-blue accents. My room boasted a large terrace with outdoor seating and show stopping views across the bay. A huge bathroom with heated floor, fluffy white robes and Malin+Goetz goodies are perfect for some in-room pampering.

The infamous Beach Club is what the brand is most known for. As with their other global locations, Nikki Beach Montenegro is the place to be on summer weekends. Their sun-drenched outdoor space is split across three levels that cater for those who want to chill as well as those here to party. That’s the beauty of Nikki Beach, you really can have it all whether you want to relax in one of their cabanas or hangout with friends on a bright, white, plush day bed.

The weekend I am staying there’s a party vibe to celebrate the Independence of Montenegro. Groups start to roll in from 12pm and before long the DJ has people shimmying poolside. The staff are friendly, and the service is second to none, attentive waiters ensure my glass of rosé is topped up and I have everything I need. Yachts pull into the jetty in front of the hotel, groups hop off, enjoy a magnum of Whispering Angel and a ‘sexy salad’ before jumping back on their boat and sailing off into the sunset. The resident saxophonist brings a vibrant energy to the afternoon as revellers get on their feet. Suddenly, the soundtrack switches and a gorgeous (did I mention that everyone here looks like they’ve just stepped off the catwalk) troupe of waiting staff step on to the pool deck and held aloft a throne style chair, is a waitress clutching a jeroboam of champagne. Flairs pop off and the guests go wild.

Those looking for a bit of balance can retreat to the spa. With an indoor pool, gym, a sauna, steam chamber and ice fountain you can book a treatment and spend the day getting your zen on. During my stay I indulged in a signature massage and a poolside sound bath, the ideal way to recover from all the beach club fun.

The food here is excellent and I don’t say that lightly. The breakfast buffet is a range of fresh fruits, local meat and cheese. Mini pastel hued Smeg fridges house yoghurts and cute compote pots. You can also order firm brekkie favourites like smashed avo on toast and pancake stacks. The beach club has an all-day menu that serves up Instagramable alfresco feasts like caviar topped sushi platters, ceviche, colourful superfood salads, juicy sliders and lobster tacos. As the sun goes down head to Sirocco by Michelin star chef Aleksandar Kerekes, for fine dining set against the most stunning backdrop. Pink skies and the twinkly lights of Porto Montenegro in the distance offer up impressive views to rival any Mediterranean location. The seafood-centric menu features creative dishes like King Crab with Almond Milk Foam and Blood Orange Meringue, Lobster Carpaccio covered with Thai Sauce and Avocado-Coriander Cream, Confit Calamari Tartare with Squid Bechamel Sauce, Lemongrass Oil and Orly Pearls, and a Turbot Fillet with Celery-Raisin Caponata and Champagne Foam. Seafood is sourced fresh and direct from local fishermen. There is also an option to select the Chef’s tasting menu or create your own set menu which includes a choice of two cold appetizers, two hot appetizers, two mains and two desserts and you can add wine pairing.

A little bit of that Nikki Beach magic rubs off on me during my stay, my cup is full and I leave a shade happier, this magical waterfront property perfectly captures the spirit of summer and the celebration of life.

The hottest restaurants and bars in town

You can enjoy a tour de Force fine dining experience at LUCA’s by Paolo Airaudo at La Gemma. The world-renowned chef runs countless famous restaurants across the globe, the most sought-after being his two Michelin-starred, Amelia in San Sebastian. Here, he offers elevated Tuscan cuisine in a refined yet relaxed environment. Despite the limited space, they have a very impressive wine cellar along with a bar that creates very hip cocktails with a Britpop theme. An alternative bar to sample world-class cocktails is Harry’s Bar The Garden at Sina Villa Medici Hotel. They serve classic cocktails using the finest ingredients and you get splendid views of the pool and garden of the hotel.

Another restaurant to consider is Gunè San Frediano. They specialise in Tuscan and Lucanian cuisine. They offer a 5 or 7-course tasting menu and expect to see delights such as a rabbit stuffed with foie gras and a tart served with white, milk and extra dark chocolate. The restaurant pays particular homage to the important women in our lives with post-modern paintings of iconic women commissioned with a local artist. If you want a casual venue populated by locals, then Trattoria Marione is a must-visit. You’ll enjoy comforting pasta dishes there such as pappardelle alla chinatigiana.

Party with Movie Legends at Monterey Jazz Festival

The Monterey Jazz Festival is the longest continuously-running jazz festival in the world. It started in 1958 and has been held ever since at the 20-acre Monterey County Fairgrounds. Each year the three-day festival that runs 22-24 September, showcases world-class talent that’s included the likes of Miles Davis, Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong all the way to Ravi Coltrane and Jamie Cullum. Big Sur Food & Wine Festival

Best known for being the crowning jewel of the iconic Highway 1 drive, Big Sur turns its gaze from the ocean to the land for the annual Big Sur Food & Wine Festival. From 2-4 November, local and visiting restauranteurs and wineries team up for a series of pop-up dinners, events and tastings at unique locations along the coastline. It’s an à la carte festival so each event is ticketed separately be it a wine walkabout in the redwoods, a chefs table at one of the area’s prestigious restaurants or a pop up somewhere spectacular.

Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance (20 August 2023)

Said to be the world’s premier celebration of the automobile, the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance has been going since 1950. Participating is a dream for worldwide car collectors as the event is a competition, not of speed but of elegance. Running this year on 20th August, the action takes place on the famed 18th hole of the Pebble Beach Golf Links and cars are judged for their style and technical merit, as well as their history and the accuracy of their restoration or preservation. In 2022 the Best of Show winner was a 1932 Duesenberg J Figoni Sports Torpedo whose chassis and coachwork had finally been reunited by the owner after decades apart.

Sonoma County Pride

This year’s 38th annual Sonoma County Pride Celebration spans three days of events and activities from its base in downtown Santa Rosa. Exploring the theme ‘Community’, the event is all about being together in the spirit of diversity and belonging. The festivities kick off on 3rd June in Courthouse Square with a PRIDE happy hour and are followed by a variety of events including PRIDE Parade, ‘Gaydar’s Reunion’ dance party, Wigs and Waffles Drag Brunch, and an Aqua Boogie Pool Party.

Bodega Seafood Art & Wine Festival

Held 26-27 August, on a rural ranch, a mile inland from the Sonoma County coast, the Seafood, Art & Wine Festival is hosted in Bodega Bay, the village made famous as the filming location for the classic thriller, The Birds. If you love seafood, this one is for you with everything from calamari to crab Louie, oysters to ahi and more than 30 seafood dishes offered up by a dozen different vendors. The food is complemented by wine, microbrew and cider tasting with more than 40 companies pouring everything from well-known brands to small-batch products. There’s also a collection of artisans and three entertainment stages.

The Landscape Lovers Festival

Running from May through October 2022, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival in San Francisco invites visitors to experience a fascinating landscape of performances from different cultures, ethnicities and artistic genres. With over 100 free outdoor concerts as well as theatre, circus shows, dance, poetry and kids’ programs, there is certainly something for all to enjoy! Charming châteaus

Are there exactly 1001 castles in the Dordogne Valley? I would guess more, but the advertising genius who came up with that slogan has sprinkled their stardust on the region. Those with a penchant for the paranormal should visit Château de Puymartin. It is widely known as the castle of the White Lady and has belonged to the same family for over 500 years. The neo-gothic style heightens the atmospheric haunted stories. The most famous is the story of the adulterous Thérèse de Saint-Clar in the 16th century, who was imprisoned in the northern tower until her death.

Another must-visit castle is Château des Milandes. Exuding feminine charm in abundance, it was the former home of renowned entertainer and civil rights activist, Joséphine Baker. She was widely credited by Angelina Jolie as an inspiration for “a model for the multiracial, multinational family”. Her art-deco bathrooms are dripping with decadence from black Murano glass tiles to real gold embellishments; her iconic costumes and her life story are on full display; whilst the stunning French garden with geometric topiary hedges and flower borders is a photographer’s paradise. The Ridley Scott 2021 film ‘The Last Duel’ was filmed at Château de Beynac. It was built in the 12th century and is one of the best preserved in France.

Prehistoric cave of Lascaux IV

The history of the region stretches back to the Palaeolithic period with the discovery of the remarkable Lascaux cave paintings. The animals depicted are of such exquisite quality, scope and sophistication, it was no surprise the site was given UNESCO World Heritage Sites status back in 1979. The original Lascaux cave was sealed off to the public in 1963 as the carbon dioxide and humidity generated by visitors were damaging the paintings. In a remarkable feat of ingenuity, they’ve recreated a complete replica of the prehistoric cave which you can visit on-site. It may be a facsimile, but it is an authentic dark and damp experience akin to the actual cave. They’ve also curated a travelling exhibition: The Cave Art of Lascaux: a Virtual Reality Experience, which will tour Bristol in the summer of 2023.

Marqueyssac gardens

Named by the BBC as one of the six extraordinary gardens in the world you must visit, the overhanging gardens of Marqueyssac are a sight to behold. With 150,000 hand-trimmed boxwoods in the shape of lollipops and balls, this is a botanical maze that will delight adults and children alike. The garden is perched 130 metres above the Dordogne River with breathtaking views of the idyllic countryside. There are 15 hectares of gardens and parkland with peacocks strutting alongside the 6 km of paths, so it’s the ideal place for picnic adventures or a romantic stroll. They frequently have temporary art exhibitions as well as offering more adventurous activities such as La Via Ferrata cliff climbing.

Domaine de Rochebois

After visiting all the fabulous châteaus, you will probably want to live the life of a marquis yourself. In that case, the only place to consider for your accommodation is Domaine de Rochebois. All-day dining is at Brasserie Le Wedge where they offer comforting classics like chicken ballotine with creamy risotto.
