209 Mare was born out of the idea that men’s beachwear has been lacking innovation and excitement. Every men’s beachwear brand does the same: swim shorts, flip-flops, t-shirts, without challenging what men’s luxury beachwear can be. That is why the two brothers Federico and Gabriel Uribe started 209 Mare in Monaco 2 years ago and introduced the Beach Blazer, a men’s luxury beachwear product that stands in a category of its own.

By lining the velvet shawl collared Beach Blazer with a cashmere-soft bamboo toweling material, 209 Mare introduced a product that allows men to go from ocean swim to lunch on a yacht seamlessly in style while also drying themselves. For the first time, this brought the elegance and class of the men’s blazer to summer attire in a functional and luxurious manner. Developing their first collection of Beach Blazers in Italy, the two brothers sought to redefine what men’s luxury beachwear should be and this is reflected in the brand’s slogan “Breaking the Rules in Style”. Thanks to this innovative approach 209 Mare believes it is setting the new standard in luxury beachwear.

After a successful first collection, 209 Mare introduced a collection of Towel Tuxedos, a variation of the Beach Blazer, for men and women. The new collection sold out in several variations within weeks and has been placed on back-order to fulfill demand. Within 14 months of launching the first collection 209 Mare has been sold in more than 60 countries and every continent.

However, what is most interesting is the backstory to the brand.

‘209’ represents the 20th of September, specifically 20/9/15. On this day 209 Mare’s Creative Director and co-founder Federico Uribe fell 10 meters down a balcony in Madrid. This accident is one that most likely would have resulted in his death, yet miraculously he survived with considerably minor injury. As a result, not only was this the day that Federico vowed to start his own fashion line, but it was also the day that would change the world of luxury beachwear. The 20th of September is known as the “Founding Day” for 209 Mare, and this year marks the 2nd anniversary for the brand.

Brother-led luxury beachwear label that was founded in the Principality in 2016 and invented the Beach Blazer and Towel Tuxedo celebrates its 2-year anniversary on the 20th of September, the fateful day in 2015 that led to the near-death of one of the founders.

Today Monaco-based luxury beachwear start-up 209 Mare celebrates its 2nd anniversary, a day that the brother-duo founders never thought might come. “When we first embarked on this project we did not know how far it would take us” says Gabriel Uribe, the Director of Operations and co-founder of 209 Mare. Since Federico and Gabriel Uribe launched the luxury beachwear start-up back in 2016, the brand has introduced both its Beach Blazer as well the second variation, a Towel Tuxedo, as well as a collection of unique Swim Trunks and Swim Shorts made in Italy and Portugal. The brand positions itself as ‘The New Standard in Luxury Beachwear’ while stating that its beachwear is designed in Monaco for yachts and beach clubs around the world.

Since launching sales last summer, the brand has sold its luxury beachwear in more than 70 countries in every continent (except Antarctica) thanks to its unique beachwear concept. Unlike other beachwear brands, 209 Mare differentiates itself due to its unique beachwear concept, which is that of challenging what luxury beachwear can and should be. Its original product, the Beach Blazer, which is a towel-lined tuxedo like jacket made for men to wear whether at Nikki Beach Monaco or on a Yacht, has been received with enthusiasm by its customers who seek to elevate their level of beach wear to new levels of elegance and luxury in order to stand out. Resulting from the positive feedback of the Beach Blazer, 209 Mare’s Creative Director and co- founder Federico Uribe developed the 209 Towel Tuxedo. Based off of the 209 Beach Blazer it introduced a more casual version of the Beach Blazer while still maintaining the ideals of elevated luxury beachwear at the pool. Promoting its Monegasque-roots, 209 Mare has partnered with local influencer and Monaco luxury ambassador Tom Claeren to produce a series of high-quality content that reflects the lifestyle of the brand.

2 years later however, Federico Uribe reflects on the event 3 years ago today which started the ripple effect of the creation of 209 Mare. On the 20th of September 2015, Federico was in Madrid studying for his MBA at the Instituto Empressarial when he was attending a celebration for the Chilean Independence Day. While leaning against the skylight of an underground garage, the glass cracked below him and he fell 10 meters down on to the hard concrete of the garage below him. In what his doctors would later claim was a miracle, Federico walked away almost unharmed from the incident – a one in a million chance of such an outcome as described by doctors. Federico saw this incident as a re-birth and decided to dedicate himself to his passion for fashion and creativity. He vowed to start a company and name it ‘209…’ in commemoration for 20/9, the day that he was given a second chance at life.

A few months later Federico was in Chile visiting a friend when someone made the comment that the bathrobes they provide you at high-end hotels and spas are always uncomfortable and far too large. This lit up a creative spark in Federico who decided to reinvent what wearing a jacket to the pool should be. At the 2016 Monaco F1 Grand Prix Federico brought the first prototype of what would become the Beach Blazer, and thanks to positive feedback and interest he decided to start a company to design and develop the new standard of luxury beachwear for men. In the fall of 2016 he invited his brother, Gabriel, to join him and start the venture of revolutionizing the luxury beachwear industry.

Today the brother-duo are celebrating a milestone since the inception of 209 Mare as they have two successful summer season to prove their innovative approach. Right now they are getting ready to present the Summer 2019 collection in a few weeks in a bid for a global reach expansion to continue revolutionizing what both men and women wear to Beach Clubs and Yachts.

The first thing I noticed setting foot into Martinhal Lisbon Oriente was the fragrance. Deep but light; warming and calming. It was instantly inviting and straight away made me feel happy to be there. The kind of feeling that automatically eases your shoulders down an extra inch and is an indication of the relaxed elegance that permeates the hotel. Smiling welcomes from each of the staff, plus the eye-catching art from local artists dotted around the lobby all added to the feeling of a laid back yet fun lux and I knew that I was in for a great mini-break.

Invited as part of a press trip to visit the newest Martinhal property, Martinhal Lisbon Oriente, located in the Parque das Nações district in the east of Lisbon; an area of the city that has been gradually building a reputation for culture; street art, the Oceanarium, a plethora of restaurants and bars and of course the famous cable cars that run parallel to the river past the Water Gardens. In contrast to the historical old town, Parque das Nações is modern, cool and urban.

I usually reside in the tranquil and lush rolling hills in the heart of the beautiful English countryside but from time to time I enjoy a change of pace – a bit of adventure, perhaps a little sun, a bit of experiencing another culture, and it goes without saying, exploring new foods so I leapt at the opportunity to pack my laptop, swimsuit and sunglasses to head to Lisbon, one of the coolest cultural capitals of Europe. In 2018 I spent a week exploring the south of Portugal and ever since Lisbon has been high on my travel list; the climate, the food, the architecture, the history, did I mention the food? Pastel de nata! Salt cod! Cherry liquor!

The first port of call upon arrival was to sit in the garden of the restaurant, Terrace, for coffee, cake and local pastries. Newly constructed as a living building with foliage inside and out, Martinhal Lisbon Oriente is an Oasis within a city boasting panoramic views of the vast river and Europe’s longest bridge. The Terrace has a huge open kitchen where you can see the chefs preparing the fresh menus daily. Taking the theme of being in the eastern part of the city, the menus are based around the concept of “looking east” with lots of fusion from the Middle East, India and Asia – and of course, lots of daily caught seafood. Mesmerised, I watched a chef roll sushi – which then to my absolute delight was served to our table. At lunch I chose the pan fried stone bass on a base of quinoa mixed with avocado and green mango, cut in a brunoise with surgical precision which was every bit as good as it sounds. As a chef who loves dining out, it’s important to me that food delights on the plate – you have to enjoy the dish before you take the first mouthful; a mantra clearly shared by Terrace’s kitchen team. Over the weekend I also ate such delights as Thai beef salad, spiced broccoli pakora, burrata with pineapple chutney and honey, black cod with pak choi that was accompanied by a moreish miso sauce poured at the table, veggie spring rolls, chicken satay skewers. Even the on site baked bread came with hummus, labneh and flavoured oils. The food throughout the trip was consistently flawless, whatever meal of the day it was. With a wide selection of local wine on the menu and seasonal cocktails available in addition to juices, smoothies and non alcoholic cocktails – everyone is thoughtfully catered for which seems to be the MO of the Martinhal brand.

Historically designed for families, Martinhal put connection at the heart of everything they do; for parents on holiday with their children, being able to relax and reconnect mean their children are also relaxed. No matter the age; from the trampoline outside in the garden to the organised activities and babysitting services, there are a plethora of things to do and everything has been thought of. As someone without children, a “family friendly” hotel wouldn’t necessarily be my first choice for a holiday but interestingly, I found Martinhal Lisbon Oriente more grown up and slick than venues not designed for families – quite simply because the way Martinhal have curated this niche is so successful that in comparison to other places where children are left feral to run around screaming, burning off their energy, here both the family unit and the individuals the unit consists of are considered meaning in fact I barely noticed that there actually were children around and among the slick furniture, the neon art and the sun loungers.

Martinhal Lisbon Oriente is slightly different to its other properties in Lisbon and Portugal in that The Parque das Nações district itself is relatively new. Having been purpose built for the World Exposition in 1998 the area has a lot of business travellers plus people from all over Portugal and the world for events at the Altice Arena and again, the thoughtful details, the commitment to connection, Martinhal Lisbon Oriente have built a full business suite, including glass soundproof pods, for digital nomads like me who just want to explore the world while working.

We spent time as a group being looked after and touring not only the Parque das Nações but the old town as well. From the hotel, you can easily reach by foot the second largest aquarium in Europe, a fantastic private boat tour to Belém where if you’re as lucky as us you may glimpse dolphins in the Tagus River as you sip on a glass of Vino Verde and even get to wear the Captain’s Hat as you take on the role of skipper (which I highly recommend for a memorable Instagram moment!). You can participate in street art walking tours and walk to a multitude of restaurants – though you could easily eat every meal for a week at Terrace and never feel that your inner epicure is missing out. A short car ride away you can be in the historical centre browsing little boutiques, marvelling at the architecture and snacking on pasteis de nata or salt cod fritters with a side of chilled white port.

While having dinner at the other Lisbon based Martinhal property, Martinhal Chiado, I sat next to Roman, one half of the husband and wife team behind the brand who talked to me at length about the connection that they are trying to nurture and the importance of quality time, be it as part of a family on holiday, or a digital nomad taking advantage of technology and the freedoms it can afford. The rooms are furnished with kitchens and even washing hidden away machines in the rooms bringing an extra level of freedom and flexibility and making it perfect for long or short term stays.

At the Oceanarium there was a sign quoting “nothing lasts, nothing’s finished, nothing’s perfect” and isn’t that life itself in a nutshell; always in motion, the sands of time rushing away. The best we can hope for is to find moments to build memories; to strengthen connection; to each other, to the land, to the food on our plates. And as a foundation for that desire, Martinhal Lisbon Oriente is about as close to perfect as it is possible to get.

With a buoyant crowd on tenderhooks, the band James finally got to play their rescheduled gigs in Portugal which included a date at the expansive Super Bock Arena in Porto. Super pumped, celebratory and uplifting, it really did feel like some kind of homecoming for the indie-pop stalwarts.

Having released their 16th album ‘All The Colours Of You’ last summer – a follow up to 2018’s ‘Living in Extraordinary Times’ this tour was the perfect opportunity to showcase both tracks from this eclectic and poignant offering as well as some fan favourites from their career spanning discography.

Supported by Portuguese artist Leiriense Débora Umbelino AKA Surma and Mancunian rockers The Slow Readers Club who impressively set the scene for James and entertained the sold out crowd with powerful renditions of ‘I Saw A Ghost’, ‘Tell No Lies’ and ‘The Wait’.

Enter James. They kicked off proceedings with ‘ZERO’ and ‘Isabella’ from ‘All The Colours Of You’, closely followed by a rousing rendition of their top ten hit ‘She’s a Star’ from 1997’s ‘Whiplash’. which really got the crowd going.

With their impressive back catalogue, Tim, Jim, Saul and the gang enraptured the crowd as they took the audience on an unbelievable aural journey performing tracks like ‘Come Home’, ‘Born of Frustration’, as well as an unexpected set list change in the shape of ‘Curse Curse’, and ‘Out To Get You’ from their critically-acclaimed album ‘Laid’.

The beautifully poignant ‘All The Colours Of You’ was also a highlight alongside ‘Beautiful Beaches’ a thought provoking track that focuses on climate change and the impact this had on California after it was devastating by forest fires. Tim Booth himself was personally affected and he and his family were forced to flee his home in order to escape the fires that ravaged California.

Tim Booth is a spectacular frontman and one of the best things about seeing him live is his legendary dancing to which has become somewhat of a mainstay when seeing James live. With unbelievable energy and charisma, Tim was a whirling dervish, dancing as if all the bones in his body didn’t exist as he fed off the crowds energy.

Whilst clearly Mr Booth is a dynamic and an enthusiastic performer, James as a band is a collective and whilst the line up has changed over the years, its current incarnation provides something very special indeed. A group of consummate professionals all of which played an integral part in putting on an electrifying show.

Simply spectacular and electrifying, the crowd at the Porto Coliseum, a charming music venue in the historic centre of Porto may have had a smidge of a wait to see their Scottish heroes in action after the global pandemic put their previous touring plans on ice, but it was clear it was worth waiting for.

This tour was a celebration of the bands 40th anniversary which took place in 2019, but the corresponding tour has been a long time coming for the iconic rock stars.

The word legendary tends to be bandied about a bit, but when it comes to Simple Minds, that classification is 100% justified. Jim Kerr was incredibly gracious and humble, almost seeing slightly puzzled by the enthusiastic crowd who were mesmerised by him and the entire Simple Minds line up which included the stupendous Cherisse Osei on drums. A delectable fusion of passion and precision – Cherisse is a tour de force and really adds something very special to the band.

Jim Kerr had the crowd in the palm of his hand – humorous and engaging in equal measure, joking that he would speak ‘slowly’ due to his Scottish accent. His accent isn’t as strong as it used to be, but the sentiment and his dry humour had the audience in stitches.

Jim also joked how the band ‘didn’t want to go home’ such was their enjoyment playing to the enraptured audience ‘Lock the doors’ he joked! Witty, warm and charming, Mr Kerr is definitely one of the most charismatic and personable musicians in the business. Kerr along with the enigmatic guitarist Charlie Burchill are the two founding members of the band that we know and love as Simple Minds today.

A performance of two parts, Act 1 was a masterclass in performance and storytelling showcasing the bands earlier material. Kicking off with the ‘Act of Love’ and ‘I Travel’ closely followed by a stirring rendition of ‘Glittering Prize’ from their album ‘New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84) and a haunting and beautiful version of the emotive ‘Belfast Child’.

A song that isn’t typically played at Simple Minds gigs, but its meaning was not lost and it was performed delicately and from the heart. His voice is warm, strong and is absolutely timeless. He makes it sounds so effortless and as magical as ever before.

After a short interval, onwards to the second act where we were treated to a stellar set which included tracks like the uplifting ‘She’s a River’, ‘Waterfront’, ‘See the Lights’ and of course their standout track ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ which had the crowd singing along and audience members danced their way to the front of the stage for what was an eight minute spectacular rendition of this much-loved track.

With an encore of three tracks which included fan favourite ‘Alive and Kicking’ from their seventh studio album ‘Once Upon a Time’ and ‘Sanctify Yourself’

40 years of Simple Minds has provided the rock stalwarts with a never-ending collection of hits – showcasing their awe-inspiring musicality and songwriting prowess. Musical pioneers with over 60 million records sold worldwide, they are quite simply rock ‘n’ roll royalty and were absolutely on fire in Porto.

Every band member played their part and both individually and collectively were absolutely exceptional. A commanding , energetic and magnificent live act, this was a flawless and fantastic show that left the audience completely spellbound. This was a first class performance from one of the best bands from the UK.

A young country with an old soul, welcome to the best kept secret of the Balkans

The tranquil emerald waters of Boka Bay catch flecks of gold as the sky puts on a show of burnished orange, pinks and violets. The early evening air heavy with the scent of salt from sea and butter from bakery, the only sounds being the clinking of champagne glasses and the slow, low beat of jazz from a yacht being prepared for an evening sail. Serenity. I take a sip of my mimosa and take in the brooding mountains, their rugged silhouette breaking up the dazzling waters below and hypnotic light show above. This is no unpredictable event, no twist of fate or great kismet on my part. This is a regular evening at Regent Porto Montenegro.

A Different Energy

The atmosphere, the energy here, it’s different. You know that feeling when you’re meeting up with friends after a long period of absence? You know, the warmth, the familiarity, sharing in-jokes as you uncork the wine and settle in for an evening of updates and anecdotes? That’s Regent Porto Montenegro. Behind the elegant, Venetian-Renaissance architecture is a tight-knit team of creative, diligent staff, committed to ensuring that your stay is as exceptional as it is relaxing. Sure, the overriding experience is one of luxury, but the approach is that of the warm aunt making cocoa for her guests at the end of a long day. The substance exceeds the style, no mean feat given the style is, well, off the scale.

Where is it?

Regent Porto Montenegro sits proudly on the waterfront of Tivat, its grand Italianate facade looking out onto the 460-berth super yacht marina and snow-tipped mountains beyond. Located 15 minutes from Tivat airport and with a flight time just shy of 3 hours from the UK, Regent Porto Montenegro is an excellent choice for anyone looking for luxuries most often found further afield, but with a substantially shorter flight time. Those looking for something a little more rustic can take a short 4 mile drive to Kotor, the UNESCO World Heritage site boasting narrow streets of charming stone buildings, ancient churches, and many, many cats. Additionally, Perast, and it’s mysterious Lady of the Rock (a little church with a big history), can be reached in under 30 minutes. With an abundance of walking, hiking, and cycling routes available, Montenegro is more than gleaming yachts and designer shopping. With average coastal temperatures of 28C in the summer and a pleasant 17C in the spring, the climate here offers the perfect vacation weather for sailing fanatics and sun-worshippers alike. I’m not sure what else I could ask for, but I’ve no doubt if I could, the staff would have it to me in two shakes of a lambs tail.

A Masterclass in Design

A proud tribute to their Venetian roots, Regent Porto Montenegro pays homage to its Italian history whilst creating a new, contemporary style of it’s own. Designed by Tino Zervudachi of MHZ, the interiors are stylish and uncluttered, allowing the sweeping views to do all the talking. Thoughtful, yet comfortable, the public areas of the hotel boast electrifying Italian style with the comforts and luxuries synonymous with many of the super-yachts moored outside. If Venetians made cruise ships, this is what they would look like.

The crisp, clean craftmanship spills out of the hotel interior and into the perfectly manicured gardens, outdoor seating areas, and many, many infinity pools on site. The beautifully refined Beach Club features cabanas curtained with crisp, white linen, and a multitude of pools directly overlooking the marina and bay beyond. If sundowners and good conversation are more your thing, Onyx Bar, with it’s delicate water features and fragrant shrubbery faces out to the west, meaning you can enjoy your Aperol beneath one of those trademark Montenegrin sunsets.

What about the rooms?

With the palm lined bay to the front and majestic mountains to the back, each of Regent Porto Montengro’s 175 rooms, suites, and penthouses evoke a feeing of quiet luxury. The accommodation is spread across three wings, each with its own distinct flavour: Venezia plays tribute to Montenegro’s nautical past, whilst the Regent Pool Club Residences feel more reminiscent of the Italian Riviera. The dazzlingly diverse views of both land and sea mean you could stay a dozen times and experience a different vista on each occasion. Views aside, the quality of the interiors remain uniform across all classes of room. Irrespective of whether you’re staying in a room or a penthouse, the beds are marshmallow soft, the linens impeccable, the bathrooms unscrupulously clean. For those staying with family, the penthouses offer ample space for excitable children and tumbling tots, whereas couples may prefer the discreet luxury of a suite complete with oversized rainforest shower and deep ceramic tub with an optional bath butler service.

Whilst some rooms include cooking facilities and refrigerators, the comprehensive room service menu means you don’t have to leave the comfort of your bed for breakfast or quit sunbathing on your balcony if you get a bit peckish. Lovely jubbly.

Food & Drink

Not many hotels boast a restaurant that could survive and thrive as a stand alone entity, but Murano at Regent Porto Montenegro is certainly one of them. Headed up by Chef Marko Zivkovic, Murano is quietly creating impeccable dishes with an attention to flavour and flair synonymous with the quality and grandeur of the restaurant interior. With a focus on Adriatic seafood and local, seasonal ingredients, this is the closest you will get to Michelin Star quality dining outside of a Michelin Star restaurant. The dishes pack a punch whilst retaining simplicity, the balance of land and sea harmonised on the plate. The dining room, with its high ceilings, chandeliers, and opulent Murano glass artwork is the perfect setting for a three course feast, whereas the outdoor seating in the Italian Garden provide a more relaxing al-fresco option for the warmer months.

For a more casual affair, Gourmet Corner is the go-to restaurant for a breezy lunch or afternoon treat. The sweeping glass counter filled with all manner of cakes and pasties is impossible to resist (trust me, I ate four in one sitting), the menu offering light bites such as creamy croquettes and peppery steak sandwiches. If it’s a tipple you’re after, the Library Bar, reminiscent of an old London gentleman’s club, can serve you a dram of classic malt or shake up a custom cocktail whilst you sink into one of the many sumptuous wing-backed chairs. Alternatively, the expert mixologists at both The Onyx Bar and Pool Bar offer an array of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails alongside a variety of light bites. You are in no danger of going hungry here.

A Little R&R

Step out of the second-floor elevator and you’re greeted with the drifting scent of eucalyptus and camomile from the world-class spa facilities. Here, relaxation is serious business: whether you’re indulging in a Finnish sauna, Turkish Hammam, or custom massage treatment, your serenity is their priority. The therapists act with a sense of care and calm, drawing from the gentle, nurturing energy that seems ever present throughout the building. With a selection of treatments available, including Ayurvedic massage, rose infused facials, and revitalising body scrubs, you’ll be floating back to your room for the best night’s sleep you’ve had in recent memory.

If you’re already fully de-stressed, the spa is also home to a 20 metre indoor pool and oversized mosaic-lined hot-tub, each with awe-inspiring views of Boka Bay. If you fancy a bit of fresh air, you can slip outside to the secluded infinity pool on the second floor balcony. The perfect place to quietly drink in that sunrise.

Insider tips

  1. While the bay view rooms are fabulous, don’t dismiss the mountain facing rooms on the opposite side of the building. The mountain views are magnificent, especially during the cooler months when they’re topped with snow. Try both for a unique travel experience.
  2. There are numerous luxury boutiques on site, including Dior, Rolex, and Zimmerman. Bring your chequebooks.
  3. Try the ceviche at Murano. More importantly, book Murano before the rest of the world finds out about it, so you can brag that you got in before the waiting list.
  4. The indoor hot tub at sunset is a special experience indeed. The mosaic glows during the golden hour, and the spa is generally quite empty as most guests are at dinner.
  5. Take a day trip to Perast and visit The Lady of the Rock. You don’t need to be Catholic or indeed religious to enjoy the architecture and story of this unique spot. If you think on, book a table at Conte for lunch afterwards.

The past few years have seen a huge shift towards remote working, meaning fewer of us are tethered to one location than ever before.

Enter the digital nomad…

Digital nomads are remote workers who usually travel to different locations, prioritising life experiences and close connections. Often working in coffee shops, co-working spaces, or public libraries, they rely on strong internet connections and good technology.

And if you can work from anywhere, why not do it in luxury?

Many digital nomads tend to favour locales with low living costs, but it is absolutely possible to be a digital nomad while living a life of luxury. In fact, the two are wholly compatible. There is currently a somewhat incomplete stereotype that portrays digital nomads solely as backpackers with laptops, but this is only one segment of the digital nomad “population.” Indeed, there are digital nomads who are on shoestring budgets but there are also plenty of multimillionaires who identify as digital nomads.

It’s all relative…

The level of luxury you live at, along with your quality of life, often varies by location. For example, you might be well below the poverty line if your income was $1,000 a month in the United States. But $1,000 a month is ample to live extremely well in a country like Bulgaria or Thailand.

Whatever your budget, here are some of the most luxurious destinations to visit as a citizen of the world.

Our top luxurious locations

Bali, Indonesia

This island needs no introduction. This paradisaical destination tops the list for digital nomads seeking luxury on a budget. Gorgeous villas, perfect coworking cafes and delicious food make it a mecca for travellers and digital nomads alike. You can easily rent an entire villa, hire cleaning staff and have everything you need delivered to your door for very little. Weekly massages, meal prep and daily beach trips become the norm on this island paradise.

Portugal

When it comes to living and working in Europe, digital nomad visa provider, Portugal is a top contender. You can enjoy a much lower cost of living, gorgeous beaches and some of the best food and wine the continent has to offer. Portugal is very safe, the locals are friendly, and you’ll fall in love with the rich, vibrant culture. If you’re a city-dweller at heart, Lisbon or Porto are the best locations for experiencing that perfect cosmopolitan lifestyle. If you’d rather escape to the beaches, you’ll find somewhere on the famous Algarve Coast appealing. Don’t forget Portugal is also home to the first dedicated Digital Nomad Village.

Spain

Next up is Portugal’s neighbour, Spain – also a digital nomad visa provider. What makes Spain the rising luxury destination of Europe? The short answer is its incredibly rich and vibrant culture that sets the stage for culinary, shopping, and many leisure activities. There are nomad hotspots all over the country, both in mainland Spain and on the charming Canary Islands. And in the bustling city of Madrid, you can have a budget of less than $2,000 a month and still live luxuriously.

Mauritius

Mauritius is yet another luxurious island nation that has just launched its own special visa for remote workers. It’s a stunningly beautiful country, with crystal clear water, thick jungle, and epic mountain peaks to climb. To qualify for the Premium Visa, you will need to produce proof of your long stay plans and travel and health insurance during your stay. Remember that luxury scenery and quality living doesn’t always mean luxury health and medical care! With that in mind, it is important to choose an insurance provider that will cover you sufficiently from any location, such as PassportCard Nomads – even more so if you will be moving around a lot!

Colombia

Colombia often gets a bad rap but this beautiful, vibrant country is a great setting for a life of luxury. It’s close to the equator which means you’ll get to enjoy summer vibes all year round and the country is incredibly biodiverse: beaches, mountains… Colombia’s got it all.

Panama

Panama has a large English-speaking population. The Wi-Fi is excellent throughout the country and there’s strong infrastructure and no shortage of amenities. Best of all, Panama is brimming with incredible sights such as the beautiful San Blas islands and the Baru volcano. A little goes a long way in Panama, making it one of the best countries in the world to live in luxury.

Thailand

Thailand has a lot more to offer than its infamous full moon parties. As one of the world’s premier digital nomad hotspots and a country that offers a digital nomad visa, it’s blissfully easy for solo travellers to find community there. If you want to live out your fantasy of working right on the beach, the chilled islands of Koh Lanta and Koh Samui are your best bet. Thailand is also home to an awesome spa culture which makes it possible to treat yourself whenever you like.

Vietnam

Vietnam is a very up-and-coming digital nomad destination. It’s one of the safest and most affordable countries in the world to live in. The two major cities, Saigon and Hanoi, boast excellent Wi-Fi and some beautiful luxury high-rise apartments. Meanwhile, spa treatments, clothing and even sky bar cocktails will barely make a dent in your wallet. If you’d like to live somewhere more scenic, consider the coastal towns of Hoi An and Danang.

Barbados

Barbados is one of the only countries in the world offering a year-long ‘digital nomad’ visa. This means you can live in island paradise long term without having to worry about overstaying or extending. You’ll be able to make yourself a lovely home and live on island time (and within walking distance of idyllic beaches).

Dubai, UAE

Dubai has long held a reputation for being the epitome of luxury due to its magnificent skylines, glistening beaches and opulent hotels. And now, it caters specifically for nomads too. The city has just launched its own one-year virtual working program, allowing digital nomads and remote workers to live and work by the beach from this famous desert oasis mega-city. The new remote work visa gives you the freedom to come to Dubai, bring your family, work remotely all while remaining employed in your home country. Dubai does not levy income tax on individuals, and you can get easy access to all required services, including telecoms, utilities, and schooling options.

What are you waiting for?

If an adventurous lifestyle appeals to you but you want to do it in style, then these are just some of the best countries to visit. And once you know where you want to visit, all you need to do is arm yourself with organisation, a thirst for learning and a travel insurance provider that will cover you in any one of these locations such as nomad insurance specialist PassportCard Nomads, which provides you with a pre-paid little red card that you can use anywhere – without the fuss of filling out endless forms and paying for any claims from your own pocket.

Other than that, simply enjoy your exciting and fulfilling life on the road!

It was back in 2017 that white port and tonic was rumoured to be the “drink of the summer,” yet after that we heard little more of the intriguing pour.

Fast-forward a few years (and a ghastly pandemic) and it seems the return of the Port and Tonic is imminent.

Many bars around the city are championing tonic-based drinks that subvert the norm and steer away from the classic G&T – including tequila and tonic which is a delicious tipple indeed.

The drink has come to be known as a ‘Porto Tonic,’ and it’s ever so refreshing and easy to make, too.

Port is a sweet fortified wine from Portugal that’s made with aromatic grape varieties, and it’s known to be a popular drink to enjoy around the festive period.

Now, as Port and Tonic starts to make waves once more, we’ve taken a look at some of the best places for it around the city.

Without further ado…

1857

If there’s one chic bar you simply must visit for a port and tonic, it’s the newly re-launched bar 1857.

Here, you’ll peruse an eclectic range of port that’ll have you licking your lips in anticipation. In fact, it’s the widest variety of port in any London bar, with vintage pours, aged tawnies and single quintas all available.

And take it from us, their port and tonic is pretty darn hard to beat! Both silky and refreshing at the same time, it goes down far too easily. What’s more, you can enjoy it amongst the decadence of the 1857 bar – housed inside St. James’ hotel and club, you feel far removed from the hustle and bustle of London.

A port treasure trove at its finest.

Gordon’s wine bar

London’s oldest wine bar – Gordon’s – sure does a varied selection of amazing tipples, including amongst which is port.

Drenched in history, this quaint and atmospheric gem in London houses barrels filled with sherries and port, all of which can be enjoyed in rustic caves surrounded by candlelight. It’s a perfect setting for a spot of romance, with port and tonics on the cards for the aperitif.

Gordon’s is just a short stumble from theatreland and Covent Garden, and for the warmer days it boasts a charming outdoor seating area where a port and tonic is a must, accompanied by a cheese or charcuterie board.

Established in 1890, this spot is really worth a visit, as it blends not only good food and drink, but atmosphere and history too. We’ll let the port do the rest of the talking…

Bar Douro

If you’re looking for somewhere fizzing with Portuguese wine options then Bar Douro. But, if you’re to visit, do not miss out on the white port and tonic. It’ll change your life.

Here, you’ll discover bottle upon bottle of Portuguese wine, as well as vintages, and the food follows suit, with the likes of tender octopus on the menu, to go very nicely indeed with your port selection.

To add to the allure, the venue is very pretty and boasts a blue-and-white tiled seating area. On your next visit to Flat Iron Square go, go, go… you won’t regret it!

Mara Girone is first and foremost an artist who’s passion for beauty and diversity of our world has taken her to Mexico, Portugal, Greece to then living and raising her family in London. Mara is inspired by the tapestry of life and speaks to women who are adventurous, feminine, brave and authentic, which means she speaks to every single one of us at House of Coco Magazine.

Her dream customer is the woman that is guided by passion and curiosity for our rich and colourful world who faces every day with independent spirit and style. Basically, Mara speaks our language and so we had to spend some time with her to find out more…

Tell us about the journey that led you to launching your brand, Mara Girone…

From a young age I have always been creative and as a child I wanted to be a writer with my own publishing house and an artist. At the age of 8, I fell in love with hand-embroidery and regularly returned to this artform throughout my life. I could get lost in it for hours and although at the time I didn’t know, I had discovered a powerful and effective form of meditation. Creating with hands has always been very fascinating. It holds some magic as it has the power to transform raw materials into beauty. I grew up in the south of Italy and very soon I realised I wanted to leave, to open wide my wings and find my happy place in the world. After my Master’s degree and an unfulfilling job with no prospects for growth, I left. I moved to London first, then to Mexico, Portugal, Greece and then back to London where I am based now. During this time I met my now husband and got married, I founded and directed a successful publishing house, I had children and in 2018 I launched Mara Girone Simple Sophistication, my indie fashion brand and in 2020 ‘Empowering Voices’ my video show and podcast.

Your brand speaks to women that are adventurous, authentic and brave. That’s everything that we stand for at House of Coco magazine. What’s been the bravest decision you have made since launching your brand?

My bravest decision since launching my brand was allowing myself to believe in myself and to trust the process. I realised that many limiting beliefs due to cultural and social reasons were just holding me back and preventing me from shining to my fullest.

When I managed to overcome these, I felt unstoppable and the law of attraction started working for me too.

I also had to learn to concentrate on the ‘here and now’. We are constantly bombarded with examples of overnight success that either doesn’t exist or is really rare. So the idea of doing it all, doing it perfectly and smashing it, can prevent you from enjoying every step of the journey during which you have the opportunity to learn to decide, to change direction, to celebrate.

Looking back since launching your business, is there anything you would do differently?

For a long time I thought that I would have loved to start earlier to use my potential and grow my business, but in reality I believe that life happens for us and to prepare us to new challenges. If I had started this adventure earlier, I wouldn’t be the woman I am today and my business would certainly be different and not necessarily better. I am very happy to be where I am and to envision all the new adventures yet to come.

Tell us more about what inspires you…

Certainly the places in which I have lived have been a great source of amazement and surprise to boost my imagination. The people that I meet and the stories that I hear. I have a special gift that I am very proud of: people trust me at first sight and they feel comfortable to tell me their stories, to open up and ask for advice. Interaction with all the beautiful souls I had the opportunity to meet on my journey are fertile soil for my inner magic, for my creativity and for nurturing my soul. I am also captivated by architecture, by exhibitions at museums and galleries, by plays at the theatre where scenografies and costumes excite my brain and produce great quantities of new ideas. And finally, nature, especially the sea, can create a big space inside where new ideas can take life.

If you wanted to describe your brand in three words, what would they be?

Sophisticated. Empowering. Inspirational.

The motivational words and quotes want to be a reminder to us women of our worthiness and become a form of support in our daily life. To carry around the message can be empowering for oneself and for the people who we meet in our journey. What better way to do it through clothing, through everyday pieces transformed into affordable luxury with endless combinations?

What advice would you offer to anyone wanting to launch their own business?

Have a successful mindset and believe in yourself. Believe in your business and take that leap of faith. It is so easy to stick to what you know, but if you jump outside of your comfort zone and fully embrace the journey then you will get to where you want to be.

Celebrate the success and learn from your falls. Life and business are two great adventures often going hand in hand and surprising us along the way.And finally, ‘never give up’ Have the attitude to face life with a smile, the capacity to dream wild, and to not be afraid of giving your all.

Talk us through an average day in your life…

With a business like mine, not one day is similar to another. Although I am obsessed with lists and they are a bit of a canvas supporting my daily tasks, I am open to the adventures that every day my business and life offer to me.

Generally the mornings and early afternoons are for business, while in the afternoons I am a full time mum. For a long time I would try to squeeze in the afternoon some emails or calls, only to become resentful and frustrated. I learned that being there, in the moment and enjoying the little things, the stories, the laughs and the cuddles of my children is the most amazing gift I had from life. Of course after bedtime, some business related task is always at hand.

How much has social media played a role in the success of your brand?

Social media is not always a way to close sales, actually it almost never is, but it is definitely the best and most effective way to build trust and credibility, the foundations of any profitable business. I have always been true and honest with my followers and that has paid back as the power of identification as opposed to the dread of comparison is gold in this moment when social media can easily become a frustrating and sad environment.

Through social media I had the opportunity to meet amazing people, women I can call friends today, I could collaborate with other brands, grow my business and have the opportunity to dream, have a vision and make it come true.

Nowadays everything is filtered through our online interaction so our social media presence is the entrance door for a business to be on press, on radio, on podcasts, in front of people through different channels. Of course the traditional word of mouth and the presence in brick and mortar shops is what will take the brand to close sales.

You’re very well traveled but which place really has your heart?

I have lived and worked across the globe from Italy to Mexico, Portugal to Greece and London and have been inspired by my experiences around the world and by the people I met and their stories. However, Mexico has been a life changing experience. Mexico was a place where I felt at home. I felt very integrated and always in awe of the beauty around me that I felt like I belonged there. Also the language was so natural for me, more than once people asked me if I was a local. The vibrant cultural scene, the architecture, the cultural heritage, the people had and still hold a very special place in my heart. My first child was born there and we called her Maya to honour that magic land that gave us so much.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

I have never been to Asia and top of the list is definitely Japan. Now that my children are older, it would be easier and amazing to spend a month travelling around the country. Unfortunately for the moment this kind of travelling is on hold, but there, ready to happen, as soon as possible.

What is your go-to quote when lacking motivation?

Generally if I remind myself of my ‘why’, of my mission, of the change I want to make with my fashion and with my podcast, I feel I am on the right path and I am motivated to go on with my journey. But of course I love the power of words and quotes mean a lot to me. A couple of very inspiring quotes for me are: “We need to accept that we won’t always make the right decisions, that we’ll screw up royally sometimes – understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of success.” – Arianna Huffington

“Impossible is just an opinion.” – Paulo Coelho

And of course I could go on forever….

What’s next for you and the brand?

I have numerous ideas that are in the pipeline, first and foremost to make stronger what already exists. I am working hard in the wholesale field and negotiating for sponsors to support my podcast. At the same time I started a collaboration with artisans from my home country, Italy, to go back to my roots and bring into the world the highly skilled craftsmanship that so often makes us famous in the world. I also have a couple of campaigns ready to happen with the collaboration of two charities in UK to spread the positive message that my brand wants to take into the world.

After giving stability to what I have I would like to start new projects: a book is in the making and another is brewing in my head, and I will finally start the History PhD I gave up several years ago to follow my husband in our expat life.

However, this is only for the near future, but new ideas are already there, waiting for their turn to reclaim their place.

Where can people find out more?

I am on social media where people can follow me to find out more.
