During those hopeful summer months, in between lockdowns 1 and two and when international travel seemed optimistic, Hannah Tan-Gillies hopped on a flight to Argentario Golf Resort & Spa, to see what makes this five-star golf resort so much more than a golf destination.

It seems only fair, that after months of lockdown that my first international jaunt would be to the truly impeccable Argentario Golf Resort & Spa. Located in between the Mediterranean Sea and Tuscany’s rolling hills, Argentario maximises the idyllic natural surroundings of Maremma, Tuscany.

While the resort is primarily known to golf enthusiasts, especially with its striking PGA 18-hole course, there is plenty of reason for non-golfers to venture to this side of Tuscany and experience everything that this resort has to offer.

The resort itself is a sight to behold. Designed by Andrea Foglli, the interiors instantly envelope you in an atmosphere of sleek yet tranquil oasis blending contemporary design with a distinctive retro feel. Outside, the hotel blends in with the natural landscapes of Maremma, surrounded by cork-oak woods and centuries-old olive trees.

A grand spiral staircase commands attention at the heart of the resort, whose eco-conscious design philosophy permeates every design detail. The enormous glass windows and ceilings maximise the pastoral views, which are in stark contrast to the tabarca-stone pavements, arched countertops and striking black structural elements. The hotels’ unique dragon-fly shaped silhouette means that every room offers panoramic views of the nearby lagoon and tranquil blue sea on the horizon.

The resort offers 73 generously-sized rooms and five luxury villas, which are perfectly suited for those looking for an extended stay. Each room features panoramic terraces and all the modern amenities that a luxury traveller requires.

The villas each offer individual interpretations of Tuscan country houses, imbued of course, with Fogli’s extravagant touches. Art lovers will notice the social table by Vincent Van Duysen or the Cappellini chairs and Pig Tables by Marcel Wanders, or even the Ron Gilads chandeliers at the bar.

Beyond golf, Argentario also offers an endless array of wellness and sports activities to make any visit, no matter how short or long, as enriching as possible. During my stay, I tried my hand at an outdoor workout, a run along the perfectly manicured golf course, yoga, and even olive-tree picking. Truly there was something for everybody.

For those looking for a more relaxing way to spend their days, the resort’s Espace Wellness Centre offers a wide range of treatments and massages, and offers a bio sauna, Turkish bath, and even one-on-one sessions with the resort’s in-house nutritionists.

Foodies also have plenty to chew on at Argentario, with the Club House Restaurant offering casual Italian favourites, impeccably made with only the freshest locally-sourced ingredients, and the gourmet Dama Dama restaurant serving some wonderfully creative gastronomic creations.

The menu at Dama Dama is bold and refreshingly contemporary, offering Tuscan and Italian specialties with Chef Emiliano Lombardelli’s inimitable flair. We highly recommend trying the Tasting Menu – which takes you on a colourful voyage of Tuscan flavours perfectly paired with local Italian wines from the resort’s vast wine cellar.

We also recommend trying a cocktail masterclass at the Aper Bar, named after local wild boars (Aper in Latin) which offers alchemic concoctions that will delight those who enjoy a little tipple.

While it may seem counter-intuitive to leave the hotel, the nearby towns of Porto Ercole and Orbitello offer plenty of quintessentially Italian sites to behold. These two towns reveal a non-touristic side of Tuscany that we haven’t seen before. The squares and restaurants are filled with locals, exuding a relaxed and unique community atmosphere that you don’t often see in Italy’s more popular tourist destinations.

If you are lucky, you should take a quick drive to the Convento della Presentazione al Tempio, where if you are lucky, you can get a blessing from the priest who will wish you a blessed and happy stay at Maremma. This is also the perfect spot to watch the sun set over the Silver Coast, a view that is not known to many other visitors in this magical place.

Despite all the ceaselessly fascinating things on offer at Argentario, what sets this place apart from the rest if the truly marvellous service and care of its staff. In the era of COVID, where smiles and genuine human connection are few and far in between, it is truly impressive to see the staff at Argentario go above and beyond to ensure that you enjoy your stay. That is a rarity in and of itself and in my opinion, truly what makes Argentario more than a golf destination.

Hannah stayed in a Junior Suite Club Travel Room starting at €650 per night for two people. For more information on Argentario Golf Resort & Spa’s latest offers and packages contact Tel: +39 0564 810292 booking@argentarioresort.it or visit argentarioresort.com

With tourist numbers nothing like a normal summer for obvious reasons, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the capital being quieter than ever with an exploratory staycation. We’re all guilty of eschewing UK holidays for bargain beach breaks, but with foreign travel rules still ever-changing there’s no time like the present to make the most of being a tourist in London…without the other tourists.

Right in the heart of the West End, behind its neoclassical facade lies an impeccable five star property. Resplendent with a cosy bar, a stunning restaurant in the form of Wild Honey and an impressive three floor spa, you’d be forgiven for not wanting to leave during your stay, yet its location in the beating heart of the West End and proximity to some of London’s best parks, not to mention Buckingham Palace, means it’s the ideal location to base yourself for exploring the sights of the city.

Checking in for a midweek break, the property was blissfully quiet, certainly something to take advantage of compared to a normal summer season. Rooms are stylishly decorated incorporating Sofitel’s classic Parisian elegance with nods to 60s and 70s design, drawing inspiration from London’s cultural heritage, with thoughtful details from fascinating fashion and design books to pore over, to a camomile tea set next to the bed ready for lights out, not to mention the utterly divine orange blossom toiletries by Hermes, quite the most luxurious we’ve experienced on our travels.

Throughout the summer – weather permitting – the Sofitel’s terrace is transformed into the Parisian Café, bringing the café culture of the French capital to ours, with a small but perfectly formed menu from the hotel’s restaurant Wild Honey of bar bites, nibbles and mains. We savoured a crisp fillet of Cornish cod with fresh green beans and lemon purée and a deeply indulgent warm chocolate fondant, accompanied with a seasonal rose G&T as the sun downed; the perfect pavement summer supper. If however the weather isn’t holding out (this is London after all…) the beautiful backdrop Wild Honey doesn’t disappoint. For a nightcap, trot across the lobby to the St James Bar; its velvet banquettes are just calling out for an evening tryst with a negroni.

While you’d assume that being on the corner of one of the West End’s busiest streets would be a drawback when it comes to noise, with soundproof glazing, blackout curtains and a king size bed bed enshrouded in crisp linens, it’s safe to say that your night of slumber won’t be disturbed. With the option of breakfast in bed always a lure, we can highly recommend the utterly divine toast with goat’s curd and fresh berries. What a way to start your day.

Of course you shouldn’t leave with paying a visit to the exceptional Sofitel spa. While a host of treatments are available, the new partnership with HydraFacial is worth booking in for. For the uninitiated, a relaxing facial this is not, though it most certainly makes up for it in the satisfaction stakes as this hydradermabrasion procedure combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection simultaneously, drawing impurities from the skin like never before and leaving skin refreshed and glowing.

As one of London’s best five star hotels it’s no surprise the Sofitel St James is a delightful stay; just prepared to want to stay forever.

Rejuvenate and Revitalize: The Transformative Power of Infrared Sauna Therapy

The sauna experience is private, perfect for COVID-era relaxation. Each session lasts 45 minutes, starting at 60* and ending at around 70*. Don’t feel like you have to finish the whole session though, because believe me, it gets hot and quick too.

Infrared heat therapy has been proven to increase circulation, and detoxification and boost the immune system. Not to mention, it’s a great way to spend some time for introspection and meditation, completely away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Saunas also release endorphins, reduce stress, and stimulate collagen – making you literally glow the moment you finish your session.

Discover the Bliss of Infrared Sauna Therapy at Glow Bar London

After 35 minutes of calm (and plenty of sweat), I too felt completely relaxed and ready to take on the week ahead. My skin was literally glowing and I felt lighter, calmer, and blissfully relaxed. I even treated myself to an adaptogen-infused latte, and honestly, I haven’t slept better than before COVID kicked off.

So, whether you’re looking to improve your mood, enhance your circulation, or just find 45 minutes of peace, we highly recommend booking your sauna sesh at Glow Bar London, so you too can glow baby glow.

Step off the streets of South Kensington and into the spa: the staff at Monnáy London are only too glad to welcome you. Feeling an immediate sense of calm, the spa/salon is inviting in every way possible: from its bright but ambient lighting, to the calming smells of the best products possible, to the soothing voices of the staff who fetch you a herbal tea to start your treatment off well.

Here to try one of the new facials Monnáy London is offering, my choice today was the Chronocare Live Photosome concept, activated by LED light. The treatment is currently only available at Monnáy London and is the first treatment activated by light with advanced Photosome and Marine DNA. It is the perfect facial for anyone who is either exposed to sunlight or UV lights and, sadly, I fall into this category. As someone who spends a lot of time on her phone – for both work and leisure – I have been increasingly getting worried about the effect the blue light of my phone will have on my skin so I snapped up this particular treatment immediately.

The Spa Clinic

Monnáy London runs its beauty and wellbeing treatments with an organic, medical and non-invasive approach so I felt in safe and knowledgeable hands upon arriving for my treatment. Harnessing the power of both science and innovation, Monnáy London’s facials are all designed with luxury at their core and are suitable for all skin types and genders. I liked being informed of this as I sipped my mint green tea; not only to receive some context before receiving my treatment but also to know the goals of the facials at this spa clinic. The various facials target individual skin concerns such as anti-ageing, oiliness, dry and sensitive skin, as well as skin concerns such as hyperpigmentation.

The Facial Treatment

My treatment began with a skin consultation and if you go to a spa and this doesn’t take place, I’d raise a question as it’s imperative your spa therapist understands your skin type and knows of any issues. Then I was ready to lie back and relax.

The facial started off with a double cleanse: the advanced cleanse was conducted with an ultra sonic spatula to really massage my skin. My therapist advised me after the treatment that a skincare routine shouldn’t only consist of cleansing, toning and moisturising but that we need to take real time to massage the products into our skin to boost circulation and alleviate stress. This is something I admitted I definitely needed to work on, despite being reasonably vigilant with my skincare regime.

Then came the application of a glycogen complex. My therapist told me she was applying the 20 per cent strain to my skin, given it was my first time receiving this kind of treatment and this kind of solution and she didn’t want to risk anything being too harsh for my skin. She said if I were to regularly receive the facial or if my skin was more mature, she would apply the 40 per cent strain.

Serums were up next: the chronocare face gel with advanced photosomes and vitamins C and E was massaged into my skin – simultaneously in a vigorous and relaxing manner. The serum is full of antioxidants and helps fight free radicals against the skin. A second serum was also applied, this one being a chronocare activator to help the benefits of the serum take effect.

A red LED light was then shone on my face to stimulate collagen production and activate photosomes, in order to release the active ingredients used in my facial so far into my skin. As she recommended, my therapist massaged the products into my skin to optimise the benefits. The moisturiser used to finish my treatment contained advanced photosomes to lock in the moisture and worked to help rebuild the hydrolipid barrier in my skin, creating a protective film.

The treatment finished with a slick of lip balm to ensure the entirety of my face felt hydrated and nourished. It probably wasn’t the most advisable act to take a quick selfie upon finishing the treatment that aimed to reduce the negative effects of blue light from my phone…but I had to snap how glowing my face looked post-facial.

The Chronocare Live Photosome concept facial costs £200 for a 60 minute treatment and can be booked online at monnay.co.uk.

With quarantine restrictions being likened to a game of whack-a-mole, it certainly seems that long haul travel is out of the picture for most would-be travellers. However, there are plenty of destinations — especially those whose COVID-19 response has shined throughout the crisis — that people can still and should travel to as soon as we are able.

With news of a potential vaccine giving us a needed dose of hope, we’re beating the #BlackNovember blues by pre-planning all our holidays for 2021 to these stunning locales that are still open for tourism.
