As the Olympic Games opens in Tokyo this summer, get a little taste of Japan here in the UK at The Prince Akatoki, the only 5-star Japanese hotel in London. Drawing inspiration from Asia, this is the perfect destination to relax and experience Japanese culture. House of Coco was invited to try the hotel’s Taste of Japan package, designed to create an authentic, memorable stay.

The experience starts as you check-in to one of the luxurious rooms, where you are welcomed with special Japanese inspired comforts including a traditional tea set so you can create your own tea ceremony and Yukata robe laid out on your bed, which add a little Asian fusion to your stay. All of the bedrooms are spacious however we were lucky enough to be upgraded to one of the suites. This zen sanctuary oozes style and elegance, combining neutral tones and minimalist lines, synonymous with Japanese interiors. A clean, fresh, light aesthetic is continued throughout the hotel. Soft white walls and natural wood run throughout the space. As well as a large bedroom and bathroom, the suite includes a kitchen and living space, ideal for relaxing in. The floor to ceiling windows in the bedroom floods the room with natural light. A stunning fusuma panel inspired wall is the focal point of the suite bringing an accent of colour to the room. There are touches of the Far East scattered all around the hotel including the beautiful Ikebana style floral displays.

After checking in we went for a stroll. The hotel is perfectly located for anyone who wants to explore London. Hyde Park is on your doorstep, and it is a short walk to Oxford Street and Bond Street.

After a couple of hours shopping and taking in the sights, we were ready to relax so went back to the hotel for a drink and dinner. It is wonderfully calm in The Prince Akatoki and you instantly feel a million miles away from the bustling London streets.

Superb sake is the name of the game at The Malt Bar and you can’t stay here without sampling the Japanese homegrown sake. Located on the ground floor of the hotel, this sophisticated, grown up bar has a serious selection of rare Japanese whiskies and spirits. Whisky fans can purchase their own premium bottle which will be housed in the bar’s secret vault that only you can access with your own key as and when you fancy a tipple. A full bloom cherry blossom tree has been installed in the corner and is the perfect backdrop to sip Sakura inspired cocktails. We sampled some of the extensive cocktail menu, I opted for a Momo Martini, a blend of Haku vodka, St. Germain, lychee water, peach honey and yuzu.

After drinks we head to TOKii restaurant for some authentic Japanese cuisine. The space is contemporary, dark timber joinery, screen divides and low lighting create an intimate atmosphere. The A La Carte menu has something for everyone with signature dishes, lighter bites and sides as well as a full menu of Nigiri, Sashimi and Sushi Roll options. The dishes served are like works of art and pretty enough to fill any Instagram feed. We opted for a bit of everything and were not disappointed, every dish was delicious. TOKii’s menu is modern, fresh and combines the best of Eastern and Western flavours. Highlights include the lobster croquettes, crisp and delicate with a perfectly balanced ponzu and mango salsa. The crispy pork belly was rich in flavour and the Cornish crab mayonnaise was not only an array of mouth popping tastes, but it was also beautifully presented, so much so I felt bad eating it. Our waitress insisted we try the wagyu beef with spicy ponzu sauce and I am so glad we did, it was ‘melt in your mouth’ tender and bursting with flavour. I would come back here just for the dining experience.

The Japanese pride themselves on service and the staff here are excellent, the attention to detail and level of hospitality was faultless throughout our stay. The hotel offers guests a chance to explore a culture rich in unique experiences set in a luxurious, relaxing space. The Prince Akatoki is a staycation that will whisk you to the other side of the world, without having to travel abroad.

Nightly rates at The Prince Akatoki London start from £229. A Taste of Japan Experience also includes a sushi masterclass and Ikebana flower arranging, which you can take home as a souvenir. To celebrate their post lockdown reopening, The Prince Akatoki is offering Sakura Season experiences, for more information and to book visit theprinceakatokilondon.com

If you’re trying to find ways to spruce up these grey and rainy summer days, then we suggest indulging in a Pale Fox Prosecco Wild Strawberry Spritz Kit, because who says you can’t create your own continental alfresco experience at home?

Italian sparkling wine brand Pale Fox Prosecco promises to shake up your spritz game with these wonderfully aesthetic Wild Strawberry Spritz Kits. The kits are a pale-pink take on the classic Aperol Spritz and are based on Pale Fox’s signature Wild Strawberry Spritz cocktail.

Each kit includes a 75cl bottle of Pale Fox Single Estate Prosecco, 12ml of Bitter Amaro (a craft Italian Amaro that replaces the traditional Aperol in this light and sweet cocktail), 150ml Wild Strawberry Syrup, 330ml Dash Lemon and six juicy orange wheels to garnish.

The kits, which come in a wonderfully elegant case and have everything you need to put together six delicious cocktails, minus all the mess.

Pale Fox Prosecco was named in honour of its birthplace, the ‘Valle delle Volpi’ or Valley of the Foxes in the Northern Italian province of Veneto. This delicious, sparkling wine is made from pale Glera grapes grown at the foothills of the Alps.

Pale Fox Prosecco was launched in Spring 2020 by English wine enthusiasts Mark Hill and Harry Cooke, who were on a mission to develop the highest-quality prosecco on the market.

I received my Pale Fox Prosecco Wild Strawberry Spritz Kit just in time to liven up a backyard barbecue. The Wild Strawberry Spritzes were very easy to make and took the focus away from the grey storm clouds looming in the distance and the constant threat of rain which persevered throughout the day.

On its own, Pale Fox Prosecco is delicious without being too sweet and has a softness similar to champagne. It is the perfect bottle to elevate your alfresco hang or to add some style to your next backyard barbecue.

You can buy your own Pale Fox Prosecco Wild Strawberry Spritz Kit here www.palefoxprosecco.com

Our girl Hannah Tan-Gillies ventured to Brasserie of Light, one of London’s most dazzling dining spaces for a truly spectacular evening

One step into this majestic palace of glass, crystal and pure, tantalising atmosphere — and you’ll easily why Brasserie of Light is one of London’s most impeccable dining destinations.

We were led to our booth, coloured in a cool pastel blue, facing the double-height windows that overlooked Duke Street. Behind us was the restaurant’s centrepiece, the infamous crystal-encrusted Pegasus sculpture by Damien Hirst. Pegasus is frozen in time, in that moment before taking flight, as if signalling the grandeur of the culinary journey we too were about to embark on.

The menu is an eccentric blend of British classics and pan-Asian cuisine. A blend of East and West, it offered plenty of pizzazz using the best seasonal ingredients you can find. We started with a Peach Bellini as an aperitif, swiftly followed by the Seared Scallops, Pea Purée, and Broad Beans, and Tuna Carpaccio with Citrus Ponzu sauce, Spiced Avocado Purée, and Sesame Seeds. The scallops were firm yet succulent, offering rich sea flavours balanced with a citrus twist, while the Tuna Carpaccio was exceedingly fresh.

We followed with the Bang Bang Chicken Salad, with just the right amount of spice, that was a crunchy, sweet, and savoury explosion on the palate.

For the mains, we sampled the Aromatic Duck Curry, another Pan-Asian inclusion in the menu, that was rich and creamy, perfectly accompanied by a bowl of steaming jasmine rice. We also tried the Miso Black Cod, which arrived wrapped in a leaf, almost folded like an origami paper boat, and perfectly seasoned with Picked Fennel and Miso Sauce.

As someone suffering from dairy, egg, and wheat intolerances, finding an appropriate dessert is often difficult and sometimes downright impossible, but Brasserie of Light certainly found a way.

Continuing with its show-stopping theme, I tried the ‘Dessert Island’ which was very much a wonderful, intricately displayed concoction of fruits and sorbets.

After more than a year of home-cooked meals and takeaways, Brasserie of Light certainly makes a case for the soul-enriching glamour of the restaurant dining experience. From décor to menu and service, Brasserie of Light was faultless. A testament to why we should be dressing up, going out and returning to our favourite restaurants as soon and as often as possible.

Endless lockdown iterations have hit London restaurants hard and with the restrictions finally easing and us on our way towards freedom, plenty of our favourite London spots are finally opening their doors once again. To help these creative and truly special foodie spots keep their doors open, we’re giving you the lowdown on exactly which London restaurants are reopening this summer – so you can get to booking ASAP.

Italian Greyhound

The Italian Greyhound is a latest entry to Marylebone’s restaurant scene and the new passion project from acclaimed restauranteurs Barry Hirst, Marcello, and Gabriel Bernardi. This casual spot is a relaxed take on elevated Italian dining and offers impeccable all-day dining in a super relaxed Italian ‘bacaro’ (which means bar in Italian) atmosphere. We recommend the Panelle, Sicilian chickpea fritters or the John Dory with Italian spinach.

Cin Cin

This intimate neighbourhood restaurant is being classic and delicious Italian food to the heart of Fitzrovia. The Fitzrovia spot is led by the same eponymous duo behind this Brighton favourite and offers plenty of al fresco seating to maximise the (likely) brief but very glorious British summertime. Foodies will love Cin Cin classics such as the agnolotti of pea with mortadella and tropea onion or the trombetta courgetts and chive sauce. Wine lovers will also have plenty to explore with Cin Cin’s extensive wine list.

Flesh & Buns

This Japanese Izakaya favourite is once again opening its doors and we can’t wait to check it out. The restaurant duo in Oxford Circus and Covent Garden offer an amazing Japanese-inspired brunch perfect for those looking to take their brunch game to the next level.

Brasserie of Light

Selfridge’s proverbial ‘shining light’ has reopened with a dazzling new cocktail menu, limited-edition afternoon tea and DJ programme as part of its spectacular ‘Light it Up’ campaign. The new cocktail menu, designed by Brasserie of Light Bar Manager Will Beauty, was inspired by the glamour of London after dark and includes several noteworthy concoctions like ‘The Light Fantastic,’ The Prize of Pegasus’ and ‘Jalisco Disco.’ We can’t wait to try it.

Sexy Fish

Sexy Fish is bringing sexy back to Berkley Square with an exciting entertainment programme that includes live DJs, a new state of the art sound system and plenty (I mean plenty) of new cocktails. Foodies will enjoy Sexy Fish’s impeccable menu of sushi platters, skewers and signature dishes including the Sexy Fruits de Mer platter, Japanese Wagyu Beef with King Crab, and the Indulgent Dessert Platter. The restaurant is also debuting a new underwater inspired hand-etched artwork from Paul Clifford to really immerse you in a decadent aquatic culinary experience.

Heddon Yokocho

Heddon Yokocho takes you back to the dimly lit alleyways of Showa era japan and has a vibrant street food inspired menu that will surely impress. Heddon Yokocho’s menu celebrates the history of ramen and highlights the nuances of regional ramen cuisines in Japan, serving up sensational bowls from the northern islands of Hokkaido to the tropical beaches of Kyushu. To celebrate its reopening, the restaurant has opened new social-distancing approved ‘Shuchu Booths’ – who those who like to dine comfortably alone.

Locket’s London

This vibrant café and wine bar, which sits right at the heart of St. James, is reopening in style with the launch of its indoor bar and garden terrace. Locket’s Is famous for its wide array of fine wines which are available by the glass or by the bottle. The blend of new and old world labels has been carefully curated to complement the restaurant’s striking international menu. To mark its reopening, Locket’s is also offering 50% discount on freshly baked pizzas from 5:30pm to 7:30pm on Mondays to Fridays.

Theo Randall at the InterContinental London Park Lane

Located at the stunning InterContinental in Park Lane, ‘Theo’s’ or Theo Randall at the InterContinental London Park Lane is reopening with a bang with its popular ‘A Taste of Italy’ set menu this summer. The menu will feature authentic flavours from Puglia, Tuscany, Lombardia, Campania and Sicily and shines the light on regional Italian ingredients that have inspired chef Theo throughout his stellar career.

Burr & Co

Burr & Co is tucked into the ground-floor of the stunning Kimpton Fitzroy London and offers a contemporary twist to Victorian-era coffee houses. This casual café is open throughout the day and perfect for solo cups or breakfast meetings. It also offers small plates and wines for those late afternoon catch-ups that we have so dearly missed throughout lockdown

The Secret Sandwich Shop

From the minds of Notting Hill’s iconic Globe nightclub, the Secret Sandwich Shop, which recently opened on 20 May, is the perfect spot in town to get your sandwich fix. The sandwiches are based on the Japanese culinary concept of ‘Wanpaku Sando’ which means cheeky or naughty and are piled high and masterfully layered. Perfect to satiate all those lunchtime cravings.

Six by Nico Canary Wharf

Culinary superstar chef Nico Simeone is opening a second location to his much loved Six by Nico restaurant brand in Canary Wharf this August. Six by Nico offers a fresh and accessible dining experience with truly tantalising six-course seasonal tasting menus inspired from the chef’s memories, films, locations, and even philosophical concepts. It’s a ride – and we can’t wait to visit.

With another summer of UK staycations on the cards, Cornwall will undoubtedly be more popular than ever this year. If you’re heading to surfer’s paradise Newquay during the summer months, there’s a new name you need to know when it comes to dining out.

Cove24 may have first opened briefly last summer and between the various lockdowns, but having now wedged open its very elegant doors for good it still feels refreshingly new. It’s an elegant experience in the heart of Newquay, with an open-spaced restaurant downstairs and a cocktail lounge gracing the upper floor.

Downstairs focuses around a central bar, with cosy corner banquettes set away from the main floor making it the perfect spot for an intimate dinner. Decor is chic and elegant with an art deco edge, while faux foliage hanging from the ceiling brings the feel of the outside in. Just across the road from Towan Beach, it’s the perfect spot to indulge in lunch and then roll out the door for an afternoon sunning yourself on the sand.

The menu takes advantage of the abundance of fresh ingredients from local fisherman, farmers and Cornwall’s bounty of natural ingredients, including local crab, prime cuts of meat, and samphire which adorns the Cornish coastline. This is fine dining accessible to all; we visited for lunch and it was buzzing with a mix of family diners, girls on a boozy brunch and cosy dates. The lunch menu includes a selection of hearty ciabatta sandwiches – we recommend the tender beef with rocket, garlic and aioli and the utterly moreish baked mozzarella with tomato and herb dressing, while if your stomach allows it there are also mains including a fantastic burger, marinated halloumi with roasted pepper, tomato, balsamic, rocket and a slightly spicy sweet potato, and a deconstructed Caesar salad with grilled baby gem lettuce, chicken breast and a perfectly boiled egg to finish. The dinner menu makes the most of the local seafood, with grilled mackerel, cured sea trout and moules marinière all featuring, accompanied with a map of all the local suppliers Cove24 works with, a lovely local touch.

We’d recommend booking in for dinner, if not for the stunning views out over Towan Beach and the sea from the upstairs cocktail lounge then for the cocktail list itself. One of the largest in Newquay, Cove24’s creations are lovingly created by a team of expert mixologists who can conjure something up to suit any taste, season or occasion. Our money is on the refreshing O’Natural with Brentingby gin, mint, cucumber bitters and lime juice, or if you’re brave enough try the aptly named Sudden Headache, with Trebbiano white, Belvedere vodka, Cointreau lime juice and orange juice (maybe just the one though…).

The perfect location for both lunchtime people watching and whiling away the evening watching the sun go down with a drink in hand, Cove24 its sure to book up fast this summer. We’re secretly smug we managed to get in when we did; book now and you won’t regret it.

TeamCoco babe Hannah Tan-Gillies tried out Cointreau’s ‘Mix me a Margarita’ at-home cocktail and paint by numbers kit – creating her own version of Acapulco, while sipping on the perfect Original Cointreau Margarita.

The at-home margarita cocktail-making and painting experience taps into two of this journalist’s key passions — cocktails and arts & crafts. There is seriously nothing more therapeutic then directing all your creative energy into a work of art, especially when accompanied by a cocktail.

The ‘Mix me a Margarita’ kit comes with everything you need to create your own Original Cointreau margarita cocktail and also includes a recipe for the perfect margarita on-the-rocks. The kit comes with a 35cl bottle of Cointreau, two rocks glasses, an orange Cointreau lime squeezer, Maldon salt, six fresh limes, and a complete paint by numbers set.

To create the perfect Cointreau margarita on the rocks, you start by rubbing the glass rim with a fresh lime wheel and adding salt for the perfect hint of tartness. Combine 30ml of Cointreau, 50ml of Blanco Tequila (also included) and 20ml of fresh lime juice in a cocktail shaker, then shake and strain into the ice-filled salt-rimmed glass. As a final flourish, garnish your drink with a fresh lime wheel.

The Original Cointreau margarita is the perfect companion (and inspiration) for your painting by numbers experience. My masterpiece took a few sittings to complete and offered hours and hours of ASMR-inducing creative fun. The finished product evokes memories of Acapulco and shares the same warm colour palette as a bottle of Cointreau. While it may seem daunting (and quite complex) at first, once you get the creative juices flowing it becomes impossible to stop.

Thanks to Cointreau, you can now relive your childhood memories of painstakingly colouring within lines, with the added benefit of enjoying a margarita, because hey – you’re an adult now – and everything is better with a margarita, especially if it’s made with Cointreau.

You can buy your own ‘Mix me a Margarita’ kit at Diffords Guide by clicking here. For more information, visit www.diffordsguide.com

Gin lovers rejoice because OXO Restaurant — one of London’s swankiest rooftop venues — has teamed up with The Botanist Gin to bring the flavours of Islay to its stunning terrace.

Our #TeamCoco reporter Hannah Tan-Gillies braved the bipolar London weather to experience the four-course gin tasting menu first-hand for an evening that would delight even the most discerning cocktail-enthusiast

Whether its rain, sleet, snow, or shine – there’s certainly nothing better than enjoying a bespoke cocktail and food menu, especially when it’s made by the talented minds at OXO Restaurant.

The four-course gin-themed menu takes inspiration from the 22 foraged botanicals that give The Botanist Gin its unique flavours; and the way that this is creatively interpreted in the menu is impressive to say the least.

We start by sipping on a fresh ‘Islay Breeze,’ which features delicate flavours of lemon balm, lime juice and Elderflower tonic. This fresh cocktail was paired with the mouth-watering Scottish scallops with gruyere mash, morels, and wild garlic. OXO restaurant were kind enough to accommodate my dairy/egg free dietary requirements and adapted the menu to suit my needs, which in my books, displays excellent customer service.

Afterwards, we sampled the ‘Scottish,’ a lemon-zest infused gin concoction further enhanced by a dash of OXO Champagne. This elegant cocktail was paired with the Wild Bass, English squid primavera, which was served over some light tomato and lemongrass broth and ink pasta. The dish offered delicate flavours and wonderful seaside aromas, reminiscent of the coastal sea sprays of Islay.

We followed with the ‘Gin Thyme,’ a powerful cocktail that combined Cocchi Americano, thyme-infused The Botanist Gin and a dash of orange bitters. The Gin Thyme certainly packs a punch and is not for the light-hearted, but ideal for those looking who enjoy their cocktails with a bit more kick. The Gin Thyme pairs perfectly well with the Dry Aged Beef Fillet, cooked to tender perfection, and complemented with cauliflower purée and truffle gnocchi.

Finally, we finished with ‘The Unusual Suspects,’ a freshly squeezed blood orange cocktail with White Crème de Cacao. It is the ideal partner to the Blueberry Almond vegan cake and almond ice cream, which perfectly bookended our meal with just the right amount of sweetness.

Beyond the menu, there is plenty to love at OXO Restaurant, which offers unbeatable views of the River Thames and St Paul’s no matter what the weather. We will certainly be returning.

To find out more or to book the Botanist menu (up to 48 hours in advance) please call our reservations team on 0207 803 3888.

Any true Marylebone native is undoubtedly familiar with the wild and colourful history of Home House. The iconic members club combines 18th century splendour with 21st century style and has been home to some of London’s most opulent parties for centuries.

From the outside looking in, Home House may seemingly blend in with the other handsome Georgian townhouses on Portman Square, but step inside and you’ll quickly be enveloped in the eccentric atmosphere of this historic space.

This gem was originally built by King George III’s architect in the 18th century. Throughout the years, Home House became known as a vibrant melting pot for the cultural elite and bohemian crowd. Today, Home House still hosts many wild nights for its members, whether that be in the notorious Vaults or its beautiful garden.

We were invited to sample the menu at the newly-reopened Garden at Home House, which after a brief COVID-19 hiatus, is welcoming the al fresco season in true style. The lavish garden space has become the place to be and be seen in Marylebone.

The entrance features a striking floral array, perfect for spring, and reflective of the colourful and wonderfully British food (and cocktails) on offer. An extravagant Raj Tent sits at the centre of the space, which offers the perfect refuge for those who dared to dine al fresco and embrace the bipolar nature of British springtime.

We started our culinary escapade with an aperitif and the Tanqueray and Northern Blossom Honey, and Yuzu blended ‘Honey Trap’ certainly didn’t disappoint. For starters, the Dexter Beef Carpaccio offered delicate flavours and textures and is served with delicious roasted artichokes too.

Moving onto mains, we sampled the wonderfully hearty Swaledale Lamb Cutlets, cooked to tender perfection, and seasoned with intent. The lamb is perfectly complemented by a smattering of aubergines, artichokes, bulgur wheat and pistachios – and is both good for the palate and the soul.

To finish it off, we tried an assortment of sorbets, with the coconut sorbet in particular serving as a subtly-sweet palate cleanser that perfectly bookended our meal.

While Homehouse may be a private members club, non-members can also enjoy the Home House garden by booking an overnight stay at one of its 23-individually designed bedrooms and suites. And after a truly fabulous and flamboyant evening at Home House, one thing is for sure, I certainly know what London staycation I’m booking once 17 May comes rolling around.
