Anybody that has been a pet owner or played with a dog knows that interactions with animals have something magical. Spending some time with these creatures can even be a healing experience. Currently, animal-assisted therapy is being used to address the substance abuse issue. It can even help individuals find healing and hope during the intense process of recovery.

Animals have a healing impact that acts as a medicinal tool. And, it has been used by people across the world for centuries. Caring for a horse or basking with a loving dog can provide incredible psychological and emotional benefits. A person that is undergoing treatment for substance use disorder may find the incorporation of animal-assisted therapy in their treatment useful. The love and warmth of animals can aid their recovery journey significantly.

Animal-Assisted Therapy Explained

The first thing that comes to the mind of most people on realizing that they need help with addiction is finding free help for alcoholics. Although some of these individuals own pets, they don’t know that these animals can benefit them in their recovery process. However, the relationship that a person has with a pet is not what experts call animal-assisted therapy.

Animal-assisted therapy is a treatment method in the rehabilitation of different conditions and illnesses. When it comes to substance use disorders, AAT refers to the recreational or therapeutic activities that help a person to benefit from the healing power of the time spent with animals. Animal-assisted therapy shouldn’t be used as a stand-alone treatment. Instead, it should be used with other programs for addiction treatment and recovery.

Animal-Assisted Therapy’s Best Practices for Substance Abuse

The popularity of animal-assisted therapy is growing, especially the use of dogs in inpatient treatment facilities. However, it shouldn’t replace other evidence-based treatment programs like counseling and detoxification.

So, owning a dog shouldn’t mean that a person doesn’t need free addiction help. True animal-assisted therapy requires the help of a certified professional that has undergone specialized training. With proper training and experience of this professional, the safety of the dog and the patient is ensured. What’s more, a certified professional has the necessary skills and experience to make this therapy more effective. Additionally, AAT should be tied to the treatment progress of the patient and be goal-directed.

How Animal-Assisted Therapy Helps in the Recovery of Addicts

When recovering from drug addiction, individuals face several mental, emotional, and physical obstacles. Alcoholism or addiction changes how the brain functions. That’s because alcohol and drugs cause artificial stimulation of receptors and neurotransmitters.

AAT provides a natural and safe way of re-establishing the natural pathways of neuro-chemical in the brain. When a person rides a horse or plays with a pet like a dog, their brain pleasure receptors are stimulated by this interaction. This releases strong mood-enhancing chemicals. Consequently, a person develops good routines and habits that reduce their alcohol or drug dependence.

Some of the benefits that the recovering addicts and pets get from animal-assisted therapy sessions include:

● Reduction of anxiety, stress, and depression
● Increased feelings of happiness and calm
● Companionship
● Learning how to connect with other people
● Opening up and addressing the hidden feelings
● Enhanced physical activity
● Learning to establish healthy interactions
● Building trust

Different animals can be used for this therapy. Common among them include dogs, horses, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, pigs, Llamas, rats, and Alpacas. Nevertheless, the most popular animals for this therapy are dogs. Equine therapy is also becoming increasingly popular. This entails interactions with horses when undergoing treatment for substance abuse.

Most Effective Animals for AAT

No research has compared the effectiveness of various animals and recovering addicts. As such, there is no evidence showing that certain animals are more beneficial than others when used for AAT. Consequently, most individuals believe that every therapy animal is effective.

But, the incorporation of different animals into a free drug addiction treatment process has numerous advantages. Here are some of the popular animals for AAT and their benefits.

Canine-Assisted Therapy

Dogs are naturally interactive, gentle, and highly observant. The best dogs for this therapy are trained for this specific purpose. This makes them ideal for patients to play with, groom, and feed. When patients interact with these dogs, they confront past addictive behaviors. The presence of dogs relieves stress while helping them acquire communication skills and self-esteem.

Equine Therapy

This entails engaging in beneficial activities with a horse. Such activities include grooming, handling, riding, and walking. When a horse observes human emotions, they respond to different feelings, including anxiety, sadness, anger, and happiness. Thus, patients get immediate feedback regarding their state from their interaction with a horse. They also learn to address and confront negative feelings while developing healthy strategies for coping with triggers.

Feline-Facilitated Therapy

A cat is a companion animal. Having a cat during a therapy session, as well as, in a free drug rehabilitation center can reduce depression, anger, and other negative feelings. It can also help in the development of social skills. The presence of a cat can also make the recovering addict feel supported emotionally while undergoing treatment.

Are Animals the Best Therapists?

Research has shown that a therapy dog’s presence in psychiatric addiction ward influences treatment positively. Patients see a behavioral change possibility and the atmosphere gets more pleasant. The effectiveness of drug rehabilitation animal therapy has made some individuals believe that animals can be the best therapists. Nevertheless, a pet and a therapy animal are different.

The therapy animals that are used in AAT are trained, friendly, calm, and social. These animals are clean, well-groomed, and they undergo health checks regularly. They are also capable of adapting their behaviors to different environments. What’s more, they help patients experience the happiness that comes with having a pet without the stress of taking care of it full-time.

Having these animals comes with many benefits. For instance, a pet owner enjoys their companionship around the clock. This enables a recovering addict to avoid negative feelings of stress, depression, and loneliness. Nevertheless, owning a pet is not the same as getting the organized care that AAT animals and professionals provide.

The Bottom Line

Animal-assisted therapy shows the animals’ role in the prevention of addiction and recovery. However, AAT is not designed to work as a stand-alone therapy. It should be combined with the other treatments of free substance abuse programs. It should also be monitored by professionally trained and experienced experts to be effective.

2020 is the year of MICRO – Making Incremental Changes to Reconnect Ourselves

A new year and decade welcome the opportunity to evaluate our wellness and identify new ways of boosting our mind, body and spirit. The wellness industry is booming and is set to continue trending well into 2020 as it’s no longer seen as a niche market. People are looking for ways to be their ‘best self’ and want simple techniques to incorporate wellness into their daily routines.

The last decade has been all about going hard and fast with the rise of HIIT and restrictive diets like Keto. But 2020 sees a shift in direction, with an increasing trend towards technology and personal experiences to enhance both our physical and emotional state. Global technology leader, Huawei, in partnership with trend intelligence experts, Stylus, has identified the most exciting wellness trend for the new decade – MICRO – Making Incremental Changes to Reconnect Ourselves.

This new approach to wellness focuses on making small, smart and simple adjustments to lifestyles with the help of the latest tech.

In 2020, hard core fitness regimes will be shunned for a softer and more holistic approach to wellness activities, underpinned by wearable technology to track vital statistics and audio experiences.

MICRO has been identified at a time when the complexities of balancing work and life, as well as the pressure to succeed, has caused increased millennial fatigue and burnout [1]. With new activities like HIIPA, mobile-meditation, micro-dosed nature, sound-baths and recovery-focused studios opening around Europe, it’s clear that a cultural shift towards wellbeing is on the horizon.

Those at the forefront of this wellness revolution are adopting a #GoMICRO way-of-life. Dr Frank Lipman, a pioneer and specialist in functional and integrative medicine, known for his celebrity clientele including, Gwyneth Paltrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Arianna Huffington said: “HUAWEI has identified a shift away from the one-size-fits-all approach to wellness – which does not take our individual needs into account. The MICRO trend promotes a bespoke manageable regime that utilises technology and supports a desire for simple, integrated activities that produce real results.”

I like the sound of MICRO, mainly because it appears easy to stick to. I find that when we set ourselves big wellness changes they’re harder to sustain but because this trend encourages small and easy changes that weald big results you’re less likely to give up. MICRO is definitely the way forward for me.

It can sometimes feel like women get the short end of the stick when it comes to health, and there are so many things that go on with their bodies, from period pains to the menopause, hormones and breast changes. That’s why it’s so important for women to get regular health checks, and here are a few appointments you should never put off.

  1. Smear test

A cervical screening, or smear test, is something every woman should have between the ages of 25 to 65, and possibly over the age of 65 if you have an abnormal test. Between the ages of 25 and 49, you’ll be invited to a cervical screening every three years, which then reduces to every five years.

Most women know the importance of cervical screening, it helps catch any abnormalities that can lead to cervical cancer, which if caught early is very treatable. In some regions, as many as half of all women skip their appointments, citing reasons from embarrassment to not understanding the importance of screening. When you get your appointment card, don’t put it off.

  1. Eye tests

If your vision is fine and you’re not getting any headaches, it’s so tempting to keep putting off your eye test. However, eye tests are about more than getting the right glasses. As you age, you’re more at risk of conditions such as glaucoma, and women are more susceptible to certain kinds of macular degeneration, which can often be managed much easier if it’s caught early. Book your appointment every two years, or more often if recommended, and treat yourself to some Calvin Klein glasses as a reward for going.

  1. Breast screening

There has been a decline in the number of women going to breast screening in recent years, with many women putting off having mammograms because they’re uncomfortable or simply afraid something might be found. The NHS offers mammograms for women every three years between the ages of 50 and 70, and they really shouldn’t be missed. While mammograms can be a little unpleasant, no matter which way you try to spin it, they are usually pretty quick and once you’re finished you get the satisfaction of not going back for another three more years.

  1. STI tests

If you’re a woman who is sexually active, even if you use condoms, you should consider going for regular STI tests. Once a year is usually enough if you don’t have any symptoms, but obviously if you notice anything abnormal, you should get an appointment immediately. Women can often suffer from conditions such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea without having any symptoms, yet they can have long-lasting effects such as damage to the fallopian tubes or ovaries.

  1. Dental check ups

Most dentists recommend a check-up every six months to a year, yet around half of adults in the UK never make an appointment. Failing to see a dentist like Olympic View Dental doesn’t just mean you can end up with yellow teeth, tooth decay can cause many different medical issues from high blood pressure to cancer, and the hormonal changes that women go through in their life make them more likely to have tooth problems. Book your appointment whenever your dentist in Woodbridge sends you a reminder.

There are days that you feel tired and sluggish. For some of us, it is hard to motivate yourself to exercise because you just don’t feel like it. But, sometimes all you need is to do is to pick yourself up, get out of bed, go to the gym, and work out.

So maybe some of you are already wondering, how on earth do you get yourself motivated to go to the gym and work out when you feel very lethargic? Below are eight practical tips you can ponder on to get the body moving and get your feet out of the door.

Condition your mind

Our brain has the most influence on our actions. Our mind is a very powerful thing that dictates our mood, attitude, and decision towards almost everything that we do. It is very important to remember that before getting up and heading towards the gym, you should have a very positive mindset on working out. Once you master this mind conditioning exercise, you will be amazed at the results that it can give you.

Enjoy what you do

Top two things that will motivate you in going to the gym and working out: enjoying and loving what you do.

When we have a positive emotion or feeling in a certain place or thing, our minds instantly create a connection that makes you want to crave for that feeling again. So even if you feel a bit lazy at the moment, you will certainly want to get moving because you are yearning and want the positive emotion to take over your day.

Look at yourself dressed in workout clothes

It helps you get motivated when you look at yourself in the mirror all geared up for the gym. It somehow persuades our mind to go out and push for a specific task like jumping onto the treadmill or yoga stretching. When are eyes are satisfied, we become confident and inspired.

So what are you waiting for? Go buy those workout clothes that you’ve been eyeing for weeks and invest in them.

Focus on your goals

Since we are using visual cues as our great motivator today, have you ever heard of vision boards? Vision boards help us visualize our goals – it unfolds ways on how to achieve our targets and it invokes us to take action.

As for going to the gym and working out, try making one for your fitness goals. It is best to place it in areas or corners that you likely see it regularly. Maybe on top of your bed headboard, office wall, or at your desk.

It also stimulates your brain to be creative, thus, another reason to feel positive about working out.

Be realistic

Setting an almost impossible goal is unrealistic and may only lead you to frustration and quitting. Only set attainable fitness goals. Aiming for a body like that of the Victoria’s Secret Angels, a 10-year marathoner or a body like Rocky is unworkable and also unhealthy. It may cause doing workouts you should not do and perform, and follow an even stricter diet that may negatively affect your body.

Get a good trainer

Getting a personal trainer is one of the best tips that we can advise to help you get motivated in your fitness journey. It might cost you additional bucks but this tip is worth it. Personal trainers will not only guide you and walk you through the proper ways of working out but they will also impart their knowledge by giving you pep talks. Personal trainers also help to build customizable routines that are perfectly fit in your lifestyle and goals.

Progress tracking

Let’s admit it, when we see and feel that we are making progress, we are more motivated. No matter how small your progress is, it is still considered progress and at the end of the day, it will later add up to your fitness success.

Try having your logbook or diary indicating your fitness routines, your start weight, your diet, and the like. As you look back, you will be amazed by how much progress you have made over time. Some also log in their exercise minutes, reps, and sets! It might be an additional task for you to do, but again it is going to be worth it at the end.

The good news is, most of today’s mobile phones have an app version of this and you may download one for yourself. By tracking what you have accomplished today, you will want to outperform that the following work out.

Consistency is key

To be able to keep your pace at going to the gym, it is very important to stick to your workout schedule. By doing this, you become more disciplined in performing your tasks.

We know it is sometimes challenging to go to the gym regularly. But we strongly believe in you and your capabilities to hit your goal towards fitness. that ‘s why at Rec Xpress, we encourage you to visit any of our 6 conveniently located branches and talk to our staff about our gym membership fee. Starting an exercise program feels great, doesn’t it? You get a wonderful sense of self-achievement, the endorphins have you feeling high on life, and you know you’re on track for the ultimate beach body.

Yes, exercise feels great, until you wake up the following day and try to move. It’s perfectly normal for your muscles to protest (loudly) after exercise, particularly if you’re just getting back into it after a hiatus from the gym. The most important thing is to not let this deter you from future exercise endeavors – the pain will be less severe as you work out more frequently and increase your strength. Instead, do everything you can to reduce muscle pain – make sure you stretch, don’t exercise beyond your limits, and consider using some topical pain relief containing CBD to make things more tolerable after your workouts.

How to reduce muscle pain after a workout

Just because post-workout muscle pain is normal, it doesn’t mean you have to suffer through it. There are a few steps you can take to help reduce the severity of achy muscles after exercise, including the following:

  • Stretch. Believe it or not, one of the best ways to reduce muscle pain after a workout is actually to focus on what you do before you exercise. By making sure you stretch and warm up your muscles appropriately, you will not only reduce your post-workout agony, but also lower your chances of injuring yourself. Make sure you focus on stretching the same muscle groups that your workout will be targeting.
  • Hydrate. Stay hydrated before, during and after your workout. This will help to lessen your chances of cramping, and also to reduce inflammation, which leads to muscle soreness. Click here for the best cbd topical to reduce your muscle pain . Typically, water is the best hydration option for most people, but if you are sweating a lot you may want to consider a sports beverage that will also replenish electrolytes.
  • Try topical pain relief. Many people see great results from various creams and ointments that they can simply rub onto their muscles to reduce pain and soreness following a workout. Most are effective, affordable, and available at your local drug store – try them out for yourself and see if you find something that works. It’s not surprising at all to get sore muscles after a workout routine, especially when you’re a beginner or you did not have enough or proper warm-up. To alleviate muscle pain and reduce body aches, use a topical relief gel on areas that are prone to overuse, like your foot, back, and shoulders.

How do topical pain relief treatments reduce muscle soreness?

Topical options have become very popular when it comes to treating post-workout muscle soreness. This is partly because they’re so easy to use – you can wake up, struggle through the shower, then rub some cream on your screaming muscles and you’re good to go. Anyone who has used these creams and ointments know that they don’t completely cure your muscle pain, but they can certainly take the edge off so that you can at least look normal when you’re walking down the stairs at work.

So, how do these topical treatments work? Well, there are actually a number of ways. Firstly, some creams and rubs contain active ingredients such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, such as Ibuprofen), which can be absorbed into the bloodstream and then act systemically to reduce pain. Alternatively, some topicals contain other active ingredients, such as menthol or capsaicin, that can provide a soothing sensation offering temporary pain relief to the area of application. Ingredients such as these don’t actually work to reduce the pain, they just mask it – but that’s usually good enough to keep your achy muscles quiet for a while.

Choosing the right topicals

With so many topical treatments to choose from, how do you know which is the best for your post-workout muscle needs? The best way is to become familiar with the active ingredients commonly used in these products, and find a product that contains the ingredients that will provide the relief you’re looking for. The most active ingredients you will see on topical pain relief treatments include the following:

  • NSAIDs. The NSAIDs found in topical creams are often absorbed into the bloodstream, meaning that treatments containing NSAIDs are not a great option for anyone looking for a natural remedy for their sore muscles.
  • Menthol. Menthol is an ingredient commonly found in topical treatments for pain relief that provides safe and effective cooling at the site of application. Menthol feels very soothing when applied, but typically only provides short-term relief.
  • Capsaicin. Capsaicin was first isolated from chili peppers, and is responsible for their spicy taste. When applied to the skin, it delivers a burning sensation, and in theory actually shuts neurons down after they’re stimulated by the chemical, thus causing feelings of pain to disappear. However, the low concentration of capsaicin found in topical creams and ointments may not actually be high enough to be very effective.

Combined with proper stretching and hydration, topical relief options for muscle pain can have a very positive influence on your recovery time after a workout, ensuring you’re ready to do it all over again in no time at all!

With climate change set to dominate global headlines once again this year, businesses are increasingly looking for ways to ‘go green’. From cutting energy usage in manufacturing processes to instilling an eco-friendly corporate culture, companies, brands and even entire industries are beginning to realise that going green can be good for their global reputation as well as the environment.

The English Premier League is an example of a global brand slowly starting to adapt in order to better reflect a more eco-conscious social culture. It encourages its 20 member football clubs to commit to permanent eco-friendly and sustainable practices and procedures – an initiative that is starting to bear fruit.

So, as the Premier League continues to grow and establish itself as one of the biggest sports brands in the world, we explore exactly how green your football club really is.

Stats of the day…

In 2019, the BBC and the Sport Positive Summit – a United Nations-backed initiative – compiled research into all 20 Premier League clubs, focusing on the sustainability and eco-friendliness of each. Every club was asked to provide evidence of schemes and programmes they have in place relating to eight categories. These ranged from clean energy and energy efficiency to single-use plastic reduction/removal, water efficiency and plant-based/low-carbon food options.

Each club was awarded one point per category if a suitable initiative had already been put in place and a half-point if plans were in development but had yet to be put into action.

While the findings of the study did show all clubs have increasing ambition when it comes to going green – with every club having active policies in place to reduce single-use plastics and promoting sustainable transport options for fans, for example – they also show many clubs still have a long way to go.

Top of the league…

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the study found that it’s the traditionally larger, more wealthy clubs that have the most eco-friendly initiatives in place. Leading the way with eight out of eight category points were Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Newcastle United, Brighton and Hove Albion and West Ham United came in joint second with an encouraging score of 7.5 sustainability points.

Propping up the ‘green league table’ were Crystal Palace with a score of 4.5 points and Watford with a disappointing low of just 2.5 points.

Although these findings do provide a positive indication of how Premier League clubs are doing to become more eco-friendly, they don’t give a full picture of each club’s environmental impact. This is most apparent when it comes to assessing a club’s carbon emissions output. It’s likely that future studies will also start to incorporate this data into sustainability findings.

Learning from the lower leagues?

With fans and customers more concerned than ever before about the eco-friendliness and ethical practices of their clubs, these encouraging initiatives put in place by Premier League teams likely represent just a starting point in what is bound to be a long journey to turn elite football in the UK green.

As business utility company Utility Bidder points out – despite the encouraging efforts of England’s elite football teams to become more eco-friendly, all 20 clubs still have a long way to go to match League Two side Forest Green Rovers who, according to FIFA, are the ‘greenest football club in the world’.

What are the obstacle races?

Modern racing has evolved enough to include not only the regular races but the obstacle races as well. These are races that are performed in the usual running court but have special obstacles placed every 30 feet distance.

This kind of obstacles is important for the difficulty level of the race. They are usually wooden parts that are elevated to almost 3 feet of height and must be jumped over by the runners. The presence of such obstacles is adding an extra difficulty to the race and require a lot more effort by the athletes.

Which shoes are best for obstacle races?

Not all shoes are capable of giving you the same level of protection for obstacle racing. Most of the usual sneakers are having less powerful outsoles to absorb the impact shocks that jumping over the obstacles may impose. You don’t necessarily need the newest or most powerful shoes on the market. You need the best shoes for tough mudder that provide better traction in mud or wet when running.

Not to mention, that the normal sneakers are usually not elevated enough in terms of upper mesh and shaft to cover your ankle and metatarsal areas. This is required when you are participating in an obstacle race since the constant impacts and vibrations may disturb the normal architecture of your ankle joints and ligaments.

So, the best obstacle racing shoes are those who are flexible enough to withstand constant running without losing their shape. Moreover, you need to have unique protection to the heel and foot curve areas that are the most sensitive parts of your footbeds.

Sneakers that have more room for the forefoot area are mostly likely to help you outperform when you are participating in obstacle racing. This happens because your toe fingers have more room to move feely against each other and provide you with better stability during the race.

The external layers of the sneakers are the ones that have to be extra waterproof. This will help you pass all the watery parts of the court since most obstacle racing included such areas. You certainly lose in performance when water reaches your inner feet area, and this is why is it absolutely important to wear water resistant kind of shoes.

Shoes that give you extreme performance in obstacle racing

Most of these shoes are looking like normal sneakers only that they have special characteristics that enable you to have the competitive edge against all your opponents. These shoes are featuring a smart insole that takes the shape of your feet while running. This is extremely important since you are constantly feeling comfortable in your shoes without the need to stop for getting some rest.

Additionally, these shoes have a more complex lacing system that bends your shoes over your foot arch without suppressing them. These laces usually consist of a lightweight plastic strap that embraces the foot arch and give more stability than the normal shoelaces do.

The inner shoe layers are equally important as the outer ones for your great performance. Inner shoe layers are coming to direct touch to your feet and can absorb your excessive sweating phenomena. This is a top priority if you want to finish the obstacle race since sweating can destabilize you when running at higher speed.

The importance of the outsole in obstacle racing

There is no chance you complete successfully an obstacle racing without wearing the right kind of shoes in terms of outsoles. This part of the shoes plays a significant role in your stability since it is the only part that comes to direct touch with the ground.

It has a double role. First, it needs to give you enough friction to enhance your grip and give you more traction when you run. Additionally, the outsole needs to be durable and rigid enough to withstand all the adverse weather conditions and get you to the finish line.
